Welcome Meghan! I agree that the spark limited is a wonderful item. The
postcards made me laugh because one looks like a Fiona Apple shot (in the
pink skirt) and one like Shirley Manson of Garbage (in the jacket). And
yes, I agree she looks a little worse for the wear lately, but I think the
anticipation of all this really took a toll on her.
"Do It Again" was one of my favorite songs in high school. The band was
Steely Dan. It is a really great cover of one of the best songs of the
seventies. And Cooling is undoubtably the prettiest of all of Tori's
ballads. Her voice is perfection itself, an angel missing from the choir.
I love the line about Speed Racer, a cartoon character from the late 60's
who fought evil villians with his sports car, his girl pit crew and a
monkey. ;) It was a cute little cartoon and it did make sense that she
would lament the passing to mark the passing of time, imho. I also enjoy
the songs on the other spark single *Macthirsty's Lounge B Sides*. "Purple
People (Christmas in Space)" is a sad little ballad that is followed up
with a slightly sarchastic/slightly mournful "Have Yourself A Merry Little
Chrismas". The last number is "Bachelorette", A Real Live Tango! ;)
I've heard people trying to compare this album with the last three and I
don't think it is possible. If a comparison must be drawn, then I would
say YKTR. That and choirgirl are similer in that they are both dance
albums. She has a little bit of everything on this collection of girls. I
think the Tori we all love will continue to appear on b-sides, but
choirgirl doesn't have the inner connection that LE had. I also felt after
watching her on stage, that she is no longer concentrating exclusively to
what the audience is bringing to the party; she is relying on the guys to
create the party with her and we get to watch and enjoy. This is so much
different than just her and the piano. Not bad, just different. I just
had plain fun at the club show. She didn't climb inside of me and churn my
heart around. She slammed into my ears and made my entire body move to
every beat. I do not normally enjoy dance music, but this is *meaningful*
dance music. She's not just repeating words that fit in the beat, she's
telling a story, even Raspberry Swirl. But she seems a little more
disconnected from these girls than with the others.
Which brings me to:
wild koba the non-counseler posted:

I don't think you can debate a non-issue. As I observed above, there is no
comparison. This is a completely different concept. And I know this going
to bother a lot of people, but be prepared for Tori to explode into the
mainstream for a while. AtRec's expect her to or they might not give her
carte blanche (like renovating old barns) anymore. Remember Melissa
Etheridge a couple of years back? She exploded on the scene after 3 (or
4?) albums, with 3 videos in rapid succession bombarding MTV & VH1.
Specials, presenting at award shows, in the tabloids and TV, etc. Now look
at her. She is still making music but her fans are the ones supporting
her, just as we support Tori. So I suspect that Tori needs to hit it big
with "choirgirl" and then Atlantic will be happy and let her continue to do
what she wants to do. She said in an interview in the recent RDT during
the last month of the BfP tour, that she wasn't looking forward "to the
next project". So take a deep breath and watch Tori hit it big, then she
will be returned to us no worse for the wear. She has a strong support
system close to her so she will escape most of the damage other musicians
endure, imho again.

Before I start, I just want to say that there is no depth, insight, wit,
or anything else in this post. I am just in a really peaceful mood
right now, so I just want to go with this simple, gushing type of post.
So please enjoy it for what it's worth.

I am just wondering why we are so lucky. So lucky to know and to love
such amazing music. Right now I am listening to all my new CDs that I
recently listed (probably earlier in this post). I'm on Ani right now,
but i just finished both Spark singles. The subject line, by the way,
is from "Cooling," and I think it may just be one of the most amazing
torilines yet. I mean, I sit here listening to Ani, Indigo Girls, Tori,
all this stuff that so many people out there have never even HEARD of,
or, if they've heard of it, they're like, "Eh, I've never heard any of
her stuff," and they don't care. And I know that THE REASON I am as
happy and filled as I currently am in my life is because of the simple
insight that tori, ani, the indigos, and others like them bring with
their music. And not to mention the beauty, etc.

I saw Ms. Amos almost 2 years ago when she performed at Erie's
"historic" Warner Theater (it was the Dew Drop Inn Tour, but you
probably know that). She was so amaazing, I swore that, if I ever get
another chance to see her in concert, I would camp out in front of the
ticket sellers & get seats so close ahe (practically) sweats on me! But,
hey, very few performers put THAT much energy into a performance ...

Subject: I FOUND OUT THE WEBCAST FORMAT!

Okay peoples, I found out the webcast format, and how they're doing it for
Philadelphia, PA/most of the country/all of it. I just talked to the DJ from
Max 95.7, Philadelphia, WXXM. He said:

At midnight, EST, Max will start the playing. What they're doing is the the
ENTIRE new album, plus interviews with Tori and her people from the premeire
party. He said it would be that type of format, and no, it wouldn't be from
Chicago. But they will play her entire CD, and her interviews.

Now, I'm not sure if this is how they'll do it for the rest of the country,
but that is what he told me Max 95.7 will be doing. So I am assuming many
other stations will be doing it this way. And stations not in the Chicago or
Illonois area will ahve to do it. So be prepared. And that is midnight EST.

Thought I'd just warn everyone, so get those alarm clocks set for 11:45, set
up the tapes, and go for it!

BTW, I'm making a backup copy of the "premeire" (my tape player has been known
to stop recording or not record), so if you will need to get one, I'd trade it
for a bootleg, not money. Again, I'll trade my second tape of the concert for
a Tori bootleg from other concerts.

Peace,
Manda

Subject: boston thoughts and generations

Well, my experience at the Boston concert seems different than most...

I should have trusted my premonitions about Avalon. 1000+ people packed
into a smoke-filled room (and the smoke wasn't from the special
effects... sigh), with more of them drunk than I wanted to deal with,
bad acoustics, a stage designed so that you could easily see someone
standing up on it, but not so easily see someone sitting at a piano
(*why couldn't they have put the piano up on a platform instead of the
drums?!*), does not amount to a small, intimate concert setting in my
book. =/

Tori's performance was excellent... But I had to filter out every
possible frustration imaginable to focus on it at all. I'd rather any
day be 3x as far away from her in an auditorium, but able to see and
hear clearly instead of being buried below a sea of heads. Now I can't
help worrying that her new music is going to turn out to be too
irritating rock-concert-like, even though I'm pretty sure that that
perception comes from the fact that Avalon has that sort of feel to it,
rather than from what the music would have been telling me if it was
just me and the music instead of me and the music and the crowd and the
smoke.

I guess this whole message is turning out to be an "I should know
better, but..." I should also know better than to get baited by another
of Kim.Dyer's flame baits, but here goes.

For someone making a point about how fashion trends are not the mark of
a revolution, I was surprised at how often Kim's last post criticized
purple hair, body piercings, and the like as being repeats of previous
fashion trends and things borrowed from her own generation. Why spend
the energy criticizing it if it's unimportant?

Personally, I think all of these "recycled" fashion trends aren't any
indication of what Generation X is like. They're an indication of what
the particular segment of some other generation who controls the huge
conglomerations that sell clothes, music, and style in general have
decided should be cool this year. Who's to say whether they stole the
idea from a couple of 20-somethings who got some junk at a thrift store,
or out of nostalgia for their own generation; what matters is that they
decided to make it popular and have it pepper the retail landscape.
How the media and retail culture of the large corporations of the 90's
is a reflection on *my* generation is a little beyond me...

Kim, you don't need to wait for my kids to start getting into swing
dancing or playing folk music and expect me to be horrified at it; there
are plenty of people in my generation doing both already and I think
they're great! Stop looking at the mainstream culture stereotype of
each generation and their trademark styles and likes, and you'll find
individuals in every generation doing all ranges of things, simply
because we like to do them.

this Tori special. I called mine in Bozeman, which was listed in the emails

and not tomorrow like the rest of the world. Bummer for me, but at least
they are going to air it. Don't know if this will reach you in time. By

I just kinda want to talk some more about the Spark singles. Especially
one in particular, my favorite of the two, the non-limited edition, with
Macthirsty's Lounge B Sides. I just adore it. I don't know what I am
going to be saying, but I just will.

I love "Purple People (Christmas in Space)." At first, it seemed like
it was going to be just another Silly Song or something, something fun
and funny but basically pointless. But I am so surprised at how much it
makes you feel, and how amazing it is. I love the jazzy beginning.
Anyway, I dunno, I guess I will do my guess at lyrics. Is there
anywhere where the real lyrics are?

Well hey do you do Judo
When they [serve round you?]?
A little mental Yoga
Will they disappear?
It's grim but [rather/never] dubious as
Motives go.
No matter what it takes she promised
Sirs a show.

Thunder wishes it could be the snow
Wishes it could be as loud [loved?]as she can be
These gifts are here
For her, for you,
For me.

I watch me be this other thing
And never know.
If I'm a [????] where the purple people go.
Then lily-white mattress hide from
Chet's words.
It doesn't leave a scratch so therefore
No one's hurt.

Thunder wishes...

And on and on, the nurses make it clear,
Just when you escape, you have yourself to fear
A restaurant that never has to close.
Breakfast every hour,
It could save the world.

So hey do you do judo
In your finery?
An angel's face is tricky to wear constantly!
Thunder wishes...

Wow, I adore it. I mean, it's so sad and so, I don't know... So
amazing!!!!! And then there is her "Have Yourself a Merry Little
Christmas," which is so powerful!!! Now officially one of my favorite
Christmas songs!!! It's like she was reading our wish lists for her to
do Christmas songs. :-)

Bachelorette is so great!!!!! I am quite sure it is one of those
purposely unintelligible songs. Not babbling pointless stuff or trying
to be a "weird chick" with goofy babbling lyrics or anything. Just
something where you really have to strain to listen, to understand, to
catch on, and yet it's there in you immediately, the first time you hear
it.

Some stuff, some tidbits and observations, that I noticed on some of the
songs; just fun little stuff:

Both "Purple People" and "Bachelorette" end with a different note than I
expect, going higher or lower when I expected the opposite.

She pauses and before "gay" and kind of draws that whole section out in
"Have Yourself..." "Make the Yuletiiiide.... gaaaay...." Just a
little. Of course I would notice that. I think it would have been so
funny if she had just matter-of-factly said "Make the Yuletide queer,"
just dropped that one fun little change. You know, for the hell of it.

The little tiny mood switch between "she can be" and "these gifts are
here" is the kind that makes you a little chilled, a little grinny, a
little teary-eyed almost.

The "once" in "gather near to us once more" in "Have Yourself..." sounds
almost Bjrkesque!! It really stands out. This comes just before the
really climactic "hang a shining star upon the highest bough"
masterpiece!

"Bachelorette" is full of those awe-inspiring slides that I mentioned
about "she can be these gifts are here." I wish more than anything that
I could just figure out how to explain what these things are and how
they make me feel.

Of course there's the laugh and the "hahahasorry" and the surprise drum
roll after "Bachelorette."

I am so in love with Tori, you know, I just adore everything she does
for us. I know that she says she loves making her music, loves
performing, loves touring, loves recording, loves writing, but when I
listen, I feel so much like she has done it all for us, for me, and I am
so thankful to her!!!!!!

blue skies up ahead,

Doug

That's what ventrue said, and it inspired me to say, yes, she does, and
if you missed my first post, please help rainn and go to

http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Marina/1733/torisays.htm

and follow the Books for RAINN link and consider buying one of the books
I link to. The money I get (15% of the price) will go to RAINN!

And if you buy a book, please email me and tell me you did.

By the way, the books linked to are from Tori's list of reads, books I
have read and love, books about Tori, Neil Gaiman books, a couple of
Tori CDs, piano music books, biographies, etc. Lots of stuff. And if
you are considering buying a book that's not on the list, and you think
you may want to buy it from Amazon, email me and tell me to put it on my
list. I am serious. That way you can buy it by following my link and
RAINN will get money!

these gifts are here,

So trent the apple-green ice cream assasin said he didn't like "have
yourself" as a song, was disappointed that tori would cover it, and then
struggled to reconcile that with the beauty of her rendition. And then
he shared an amazing, powerful-yet-obvious-in-hindsight insight.

Trent, thanks so much for, you know, using your brain and figuring this
out for me. It is so powerful for me to look at the song from this
point of view now. I am currently sticking the Spark CD in my CD player
in place of the Blue Skies import so I can listen just one more time. I
was hit, when you shared your realization, with a rush of other possible
christmas songs tori could have done in a similar vein: Away in a
Manger ["if susan the right wing christian bitch or that woman beating
her children in the mall or mary and joseph who can't even stick their
kid in a nice crib can have babies, why can't i?"], Silent Night ["all
is calm, all is bright, round non-virgin, mother, no child... No crying
he makes..." no waking up in the night to baby crying-- painfully silent
night], i won't go on.

through the years we all will be together,

-My friend and i got there around 3pm thinking we would get a wristband, well
what do ya know...they weren't handing out anything until 7pm. It was
freezing cold and drizzling and I was wearing a sweater and my friend had a
windbreaker on so we damn cold, and decided to go back to her dorm about 45
min. away, but of course we get lost....one thing my mom told me was "whatever
you do don't go to Camdon <----bad neighborhood....well, somehow we were in
there...drove around for about 2 hours and almost wrecked....and then somehow
ended back up in Philly. Well, instead of parking in front of the EFactory we
had to park in the alley behind the place....we didn't want to freeze our buns
off so we stayed in the car. At around 6pm..we noticed this huge bus pull
in....what do ya know...it was tOri's bus...the security guy told us to stand
by our car....no one was around the back of the building, because everyone was
waiting for tickets or getting tOri's autograph....Steve Caton starts heading
up the stairs to the back of the building and i go "Steve, what's up" He was
surprised..he goes "how are you doing?" I was like great, then I said "your
awesome" he said thanks...then some stupid lady said we either have to stay
inside our car or go around the front and stand in line...so me and my friend
stayed in the car...what do ya know...my friend goes "there is tOri"...I
rolled the window down and stuck half my body (i was wearing a bright, bright
blue rainjacket) out the window and screamed "tOReeeeeee I love you" and she
turned around and blew me a kiss...i swear i almost fell out of the
window...we started laughing our ass's off (Mainly because I'm a dork, for
sticking my body out the window and because she actually turned around when
there was like 5 security guys surrounding her), then i was like, let's get
out of here...I thought the lady would come and take my tickets away....to our
surprise we were standing at the same spot we were in at 3o'clock....
.I didn't see ya Bethany...unless you were wearing a colorful jacket? I kept
looking for a red hair person but, I swear ta god ever other girl had red
hair...

Subject: Pieces of me: An Official De-Lurking
Date: Wed, 29 Apr 1998 22:37:18 -0500

    Hi,
First of all, I love RDT...what Tori fan wouldn't? =) I am what
most would call a persistent lurker. However, reading all of the
ToriStories made me want to tell mine, and get a little more involved in
...well, communicating with other Tori fans. I have only been to two Tori
concerts. The first one was in Dallas, and I cannot recall ever having that
kind of reaction to music...even me, the musician. =) I got to meet her,
and I felt special because she was so kind, and she didn't make me feel like
a fan...she made me feel like a friend. I got to tell her about My
Bosendorfer piano, and told her she could play it anytime.=) I cried in
almost every song, not because the lyrics might have been sad, but because
the way she sang..played...brought out some deep emotion I had never felt
before..moved me on a level that few things ever have.
Needless to say, I was addicted to Tori live, so I skipped school to go
to her concert in, believe it or not, College Station, TX...Yes...A&M
University. Seeing as the campus is full of Bible Beaters ( in the true
sense of the word..), there were only about 20-maybe 30 people at the meet
and greet. She came off the bus, and her bodyguard motioned to her to start
at the other end of the line of people, but for some reason, she saw me,
smiled, and came straight for me! ( Shocked? So was I!) My brother even took
'play-by-play' pictures ( God Bless his soul =). I made a CD for her at my
father's recording studio, and also gave her a little silver faerie pin.
She talked to me for what seemed to be the longest time, gave me a giant
hug, and even posed for a picture! (wow..) People asked me afterward if I
was good friends with her. I wanted so badly to say YES! I am *still* in
awe of her kindness. She is just a really genuine person.
I listened to her new songs about a two weeks(?) ago. I noticed that
she has really matured as a composer...which I would have told you was
impossible before I listened to her new stuff. Her songs have gotten
thicker, harmonically, modally even.=) Spark...made me cry. Jackie's
Strength..made me cry even harder. Even Playboy Mommy...made me cry. I
couldn't believe the beauty of it. I am exuberant about getting her new cd,
and am looking forward to every concert within 6 hours driving distance from
where I live. Hopefully, I will get to talk her again. I often wonder if
she remembers any of her ears with feet. There are so many now, you know.
Well, that's my end of the story.=)
I hope you have enjoyed my de-lurking, please put your seats and tray
tables in the upright position, and the captain has turned on the fasten
seatbelt sign. Come again!

Much Love to all of you,
                                                Michelle

Subject: Now I've got the beef!

I knew someone would take what I was saying the wrong way. I'm not the only
one to have noticed a little extra weight on Tori, but is this a bad thing?
I was only raising a little theory I have. I'm not even claiming to know
the real reason for her weight gain.

>From: disfigurine@juno.com (gina m allison)
>someone posted a note recently speculating that this supposed "extra
>weight" (which i completely FAIL to notice) could be attributed to eating

>i'm just going to be blunt on this one, i am sure i will get bitched at
>for it, but that idea is TOTAL BULLSHIT.

If I'm spouting complete romantic bullshit, fine, I can live with that, but
that's your opinion Gina.

Here's what I wrote, in RDT #172 that got the response:
"I've seen it a few times over the years, where women fall deeply in love
and put on that little bit extra. I think it's probably because the anxiety
from the early stages of the relationship, being that buzz you get when you
first fall in love, has gone. It's more like the stage where she's got her
man and she's feeling more comfortable within herself and with life in
general. I'd say the amount of food she eats is still the same, it's just
not burning up so fast."

I'm not suggesting that it can be contributed wholly to Tori's husband. I
didn't even say she is eating more. The point I am making is that she looks
at peace with her life and her world in general. The most obvious change in
her world recently has been her marriage, so that's where I made the
connection. Would anyone here deny someone being at peace with themselves?

>surely it is a cute little romantic idea that women lose ALL control of
>their emotions and willpower, but i just don't think that is the case.

Here we go... I've only seen this happen 3 times, so I'm not suggesting all
women go crazy with a warm fuzzy glow over their men.

>it is well know that tori is very fond of food. she takes great pleasure
>in eating and everything that it involves. she eats alot, rightfully so.
> her life is rich in many ways. thus, weight gain. easy solution, end
>of story.
>also, whoever blamed her weight on her "marital bliss" maybe failed to
>remember that she was PREGNANT. any pregnant woman can attest to the
>fact that such a change in the body rearranges her whole system and her
>body begins to function in VERY STRANGE ways.

Yes, a love for food is a good reason for putting on weight. Being pregnant
is an excellent reason. From the time of the Letterman show, I've got no
clue as to if she is pregnant or not. I don't have any claim to know the
contents of her stomach, or her womb for that matter. I know she had a
miscarriage a while back but that would be a reason to lose weight, through
anxiety. Wouldn't it be great news if it was because of pregnancy?

Now for my title for this e-mail. No, I'm not irritated by the reply, but
it's more about my own experience. About 9 months ago a stressful period at
work ended for me. My weight had been stable until then but since the
pressure is off, I've gained a few pounds myself. I'm not eating any more
than I used to, it's just not being burned up faster through anxiety and
stress. For the first time in years, I feel at peace with my world.

Let's just be glad Tori appears at peace and anxiety free.

Brian

Hiya. This is my first time posting, but a reeally nice person told me not
to be shy (thanxabunch Beth!). um, where to begin, where to begin . . .
My name's Ephraim, (pr: F-rem), I'm sixteen, been listenin' to the Tori
monster since UTP (my first album, though, was LE, 'cause I have a thing
about listening to albums in chronological order -don't ask). She helped me
through some tough times (*really* tough) and helped me out. Not to say
that I wouldn't have gotten out without her, but let's just say the healing
proccess was quicker with background music. Been to a coupla shows, bought
a coupla bootlegs (b-sides, whatever), etc. I like to fancy myself a
writer, a poet, a painter and even maybe a musician. What my friends
lovingly call a 'renissaince loser.' if Caliope or Erato take their
proverbial dump an my head any time soon, i'll let y'all know.

Got some shit to discuss, right off the bat like that. I would like to say
that though, no, guns don't kill people, people kill people any way they
can, that doesn't meean we should make it any easier (yeah, I'm very
talented with reviving dead topics). BUT, what happened in Arkansas can not
totally be blamed on either gun control or the way these kids were brought
up because all you goddamn (no offense) yankees don't realize that in
Arkansas, *every* kid is raised with a .22 in his/her hand, and despite
this, there are less cases similar to these in the south than in the north.
The only reason this case in particular stood out was because of the
exponentially young age of the murderers.

WHEW! glad that's over with.

Couple other things: You guys talk about how infatuated with food Tori may
be, and how this may or may not affect her robustity. Not only do I wonder
who gives a shit, but I also must point out that *everyone* is addicted to
food. Fer christ's sake, if we don't get it for a coupla weeks, we all go
through terrible withdrawl (which The System calls 'malnutrituion') and
soon die. THAT'S what I call addiction.
Speaking of addiction and the algebra of need, this may have been said many
times before, but I've always thought that two 'must reads'(if such things
even exist) for EWF is anything by William S. Burroughs, who's usage of
avant garde and apes garde narrative is not only amazing but also at times
similar to Tori's loopy and entertaining consoisness (sp?) streams. Another
is Neil Gaiman, who is simply awesome. I tis well known that Tori and Neil
are friends and respect each other's work, so you should all go out to your
local comx store and ask for some intel on this guy (I guarant-ee, you
won't be dissappointed).
Also, Beth, about the weird looks on the bassist's face, don't worry. As a
bassist, I know that some of the countenances we assume whilst playing go
anywhere from 'reverent' to 'psychotic' to 'goddamn that boy's uuuugl-ee!'
I personally am known for making dumb faces in the heat of the action.

Yes, it's a performance art all it's own. :p

I'm sure that there's more I have to say, just as I am sure that if there
is you guys'll be the first to hear it.

hava tequila,

Kai'Ckul.

'i thank you god for this most amazing
day; for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a true blue dream of sky; and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes
