Forgive me for sounding harsh, but I *have* to agree with what Jorge had to say: <excuse the large snippage, but please remember that some people have short memories! [me included]) >back in the day before one million different ISP's and anyone being able to >get an AOL account, there was more of an effort to teach people things like >netetiquette and how you should post to a mailing list. now you're given a >username, a password, and a kick in the ass. one of the things i was taught >when i first entered the world of listservs is that you read a list for >about a month of two before posting in order to get a feel for the list. i >don't mean this to sound like i'm discouraging newbies, but a lot of the >time someone will come on the list and post something which was discussed in >a thread a week or month earlier, or someone will post something (that PETA >rally thing comes to mind immediately) that the rest of the list is not >going to take kindly to. i think if we all waited a little and got to know >what makes RDT what it is, what are the "unwritten rules" we've come to live >by, and who's who on this list (if i see one more person call Ventrue >"Fragments", i'm going to hurl my computer out the window), we'd avoid a lot >of confusion. *Sigh* or the fact that 'fragments' (sorry, I just had to say that) is a gurl :p *laughs* My little whinge stems out of something I also whinged about on rec.music.tori-amos, or rmta (for those of you who like ng's or use dejanews). The fact that a few newbies *don't* hang around for a while to get the jist of the groups they're reading, then post -and more often than not- questions that are ... bleedingly obvious... *sigh* Yes, I'm incoherent... not enough caffeine, and starting to feel guilty for not starting my study. :| To give an example: rmta uses special threadmarkers to stop people whingeing about the "off-topic" nature of the newsgroup. In doing so, they use -I- to mark irrelevant posts, and -R- for Tori-relevant ones (just to name the basics of the ng). Hey! This seems handy, right, and you'd find that out if you did a bit of reading around, and reading the fAQ, and all that fun stuff (similar to reading Violet's "welcome" message, I spose). However, some people still insist on just popping in for 2 seconds and saying "what's with all this I and R and why don't you talk about Tori?" Which is really annoying, especially if you like reading rmta. But I digress. Yes, Jorge, I agree with you. I hung around on RDT for a while, to get the feel of the messages, and the people, and the topics being posted. I'm still not very fond of the 5-line message on this list... but that's just me... writing 7 K messages to everyone *slap*. To give another illustration: if you heard a group of people at a party were talking about Tori, your manners (and your damn common sense!) would dictate that you'd probably slide into the group, listen for a bit, see what they're talking about, where the conversation's heading... and maybe after a while, pop in a comment or two to test the water, and so on. And you'd probably introduce yourself, for that matter. To me, the other situation which seems to happen could be equated with the following: you hear a group of people at a party, talking about Tori... and you're just sooooooooo excited and you think it's really k3wl and stff !! :) so you pop in and ask" hey, did tori have a miscarriage? I heard she got married or somethink!" See what I mean? In any situation, you test the waters. And there is nothing more satisfying, anyway, than to do research on your own - whether that be academic or purely for leisure. Posting questions (like the quiz, although that *did* result in some damn funny responses) is - IMO (trust me, it's not very humble at the moment) layzeee. I'm sure Mikewhy would have some resources that would have many answers - or at least would be able to point you at some other web site that would. Search engines are also very helpful. <I think I'll tone down the sarcasm now> And should I take my waste-of-bandwidth time to lament about the state of the English language in online communication? <English teacher mode firmly on...> umm... paragraphs, anyone? Sentences, anyone? That's why I like RDT - 99% of the posters write more than 1 par anyway, and when they do, it makes sense! :) *happy Dani* sorry, there's nothing that makes me smile more on the Internet than seeing a rare site, or receiving an e-mail with good spelling, grammar and *lo!* someone who can use a large-ish vocab. There is quite a bit of bass on FTCH (certainly far more than on the other albums). One thing I noticed from working with car stereo extensively in my youth, is that on one system a song can seem to have massive amounts of bass, and on another, it can appear to have none at all. It's all in what your stereo is sensitive to. I've notice that most of the bass on FtCH is in the 150 hz - 40 hz range. Most cheapie stereos have a bass boost around 120 hz or so (as does MTV). Anyone with an average stereo SHOULD be able to get decent bass response from this. However, there is A LOT of hard deep bass below the 70hz range, and only a really good stereo is really going to pick this up (I use Infinty SM 152's myself). Try taking FtCH to a stereo store and ask for an audition. I think you'll agree there is plenty of bass in FtCH. It's an ongoing debate, but for those who think that ppl should be allowed to do whatever they want at a Tori concert (even if it ruins the experence for those around them), may I quote RDTRN 205 stuart wrote: > The audience were great too. Look, don't get me wrong, I'm just as emotional at a Tori concert as the next guy, but Tori's concerts are a little more intimate than your average concert. You wouldn't want me screaming and heckling and whatnot at your sister's piano recital would you? In RDTRN 206 Bethey wrote: > I have heard that people called and got just as good seats as I did, > >so it's a crap shoot anyway you look at it. IMHO of course. I don't know where everyone lives, or how much it's worth to them to get "really good" seats, but in some places scalping is BIG LEGAL business. Here in Texas, there are companies set up specifically for that purpose alone. Admittedly, this does suck, however, last tour I made the mistake of waiting to buy tix (hey UtP didn't sell out, right?), and the show sold out. However, due to the Houston Ticket Company, I was still able to get sixth row seats and know exactly where I was sitting without having to worry about even getting tickets the night of the show. Granted, I paid a heavy penalty for my mistake, but it was worth it. I'll probably do the same again this year, since time at my job is worth far more than the $100 I'd spend in line waiting for tix that just suck anyhow. Just a thought to those of you who couldn't get tickets or couldn't get good tickets. Also in RDTRN 206 Jesup wrote: >I am looking... tape of Tori doing American Pie... Good luck. Actually, past two times (three if you count the two shows in Houston as two separate events). Let me tell you, I so hope it's Cullen again. Cullen auditorium is the absolute best place in Houston to see a musician perform. The auditorium has fantastic acoustics, and is extremely intimate. I know Cullen will hold just over 400, but I'm so afraid that they will decide to have the show at Compaq Center (formerly the Summit) or (god forbid!) the Astrodome. I imagine that she will probably end up playing The Woodlands, which is great if you can end up getting middle seats under the awning, but if you get the lawn or the side seats.... >From RDT 216 jorge wrote: > ...i've never really thought of "Professional Widow" as a song to have > >sex to. Maybe I just have fucked up tastes in sex music (though I've never had anyone complain). Personally I either prefer something that can be played as background music where the words are not really important to the song (really bluesy jazz or enya or something like that), and where the beat and mood are more important (try a slower dance song or even something like AIC's "down in a hole"). Better yet, if you want to find good music to have sex to, go to your local strip bar. Believe me, if they can't pretend to make love to it, they won't play it (and for the record, I've NEVER heard Tori played there). In RDT 216 it was also mentioned that: "check out how much she toured for LE.... like 500 shows..." Was this Mr. Hyperbole man speaking? I've checked all my sources and they say 140 shows (I could be off by one or two, please feel free to correct me). I don't regret tha I didn't see her in her heyday (because I did! :P), but I do regret that her shows are turning into something that is not as enjoyable, and something that she doesn't really want. Date: Wed, 17 Jun 1998 01:02:29 GMT hi everyone. i'm your classic lurker. forgive me! i just read jodi's post about volunteering at a rape crisis center and it reminded me, last june i went to an ani show here in cleveland and ani had sent 10 free tickets to the our local rape crisis center. she made a big deal about the volunteers being there and asked everyone to give them a hand for the work they do. i thought this was the most fabulous thing to do. and then i thought, how come tori doesn't do this?!! it just seems more like something that would be up tori's alley. correct me if i'm wrong. i guess it has to do with the fact that ani is very much in control of everything that goes on with her tours and her management. and tori hates all that stuff. she'd rather just have magical seances and play and let someone else worry about the details. which is cute anyway. :) kate ***anyone else on the list gonna be at the july 22nd show at csu? -o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o [top] From: ToriBoi@aol.com Date: Wed, 17 Jun 1998 00:08:34 EDT To: precious-things@smoe.org, rdtrn@torithoughts.org Subject: have YOUself a merry little christmas First of all, it just hit me the other day that Tori was covering a great christmas song in the middle of June just to be singing a pretty song, but that she was singing Merry Christmas to her unborn child. Because as all of you know, she lost the baby Dec. 23. 1996... ... Anyway, I was listening to this track tonight and when she says "faithful friends that are near to us, gather near to us, once more" WHen tori sings "ONCE" it is so BJORK-ish it kills me!!!! it comes out much more like wance... or something ANyone's thoughts? Today, YKTR is only available for Very very high prices on vinyl, and for around 20-30 dollars on CD, as a bootleg... How many of you have YKTR??? I got it at first because it was Tori's very first album, and it was just a "must have"... But the more i listen to it, i dont' care if people say it's 80's crap, or "no wonder it didnt' suceed", some points of it make me laugh, but there are utter Tori moments there, I dont' care what they say.. ... "Cool On Your Island" is absolutley BREATHTAKING! The first time I really listened, I cried.... The words and music are awesome. I know there's no piano in the song, but i wonder if she plays something else like the keyboard in it or something.... .... anyway, her vocals in this track rock!!! I heard her play this in 1996 in Richmond, but she only played a segment of it, with "hey jupiter" as a closing. She actually played my favorite line "we could buy an airplane, build a home in the sand, you could tell your secrets, i could understand... ... " I would die to hear her do this live again, maybe in it's entirety... "Ettenne Triology" is my second favorite. She played this also on the last tour, in it's entirety actually. I can't remember what show. The piano on this track is gorgeous... "The Big Picture" totally eighties!!!!! But i love every minute of it! "Fire On The Side" awesome!!! The music leaves a eighties unfinished aftertaste, but the lyrics and melody are typical tori, nothing less of brilliant. "Fayth" and "Heart Attack at 23" just plain fuN! other tracks i could take or leave "Pirates", "Floating City".... I just returned from a wonderful trip to amoeba records in SF (near the corner of Haight & Stanyan, on Haight St.). I saw something behind the counter which shocked the hell out of me. I didn't buy it, but I figure someone on this list might like to have it: The YKTR disc. The original one. On Vinyl. It's not even a cut-out. And it's $150, which is comparitively priced for the item. It looks to be in really good shape (the cover, I didn't look at the vinyl itself). I'd go quickly, if you're interested in it -- it will probably be gone quite soon. They ALSO have 2 packages of the Choirgirl box. These seem to come in plain corrugated cardboard boxes, and include the CD with a different cover, a t-shirt and the piano pin, for $66.98. Since I couldn't see any of the items, I decided to pass on it, but SF fans who don't have this already might be interested. I DID find a lot of other lovely things... so I am happy. :) Beth -- "Is food your favorite obsession?" I ask. Amos' eyes gleam wickedly. "No," she says, grinning. "It's just a smokescreen for my favorite obsession." "Which would be?" She takes a perfect pause. I dreamed I was back at a old house I lived in in California. And I went into the bathroom to find a bunch of cd's in the tub submerged in water. I saw some Tori Amos cd's so I got them out and dried them off. But the weird thing was I'd never see nor heard of these cd's before. And they weren't new. So I just sat there staring at them. Then I woke up. Anyways. This morning as I was looking through a page on a Tori site I saw one of the cd's in my dream. It was More Pink. And it was made in 1994 and sold in Australia. I e-mailed the person who owned the site to see if she knew how or where to get More Pink but she didn't know. She said her ex bought her that cd as a birthday present and it cost him $75. And she said she saw it for sale online on someone's page for $50. I really wish I knew where. I'd love to get my hands on that cd. And also. I just found this out as well(I'm so slow it's rediculous). that Y Kant Tori Read was pressed on vinyl in 1988. But that's all I know. And it has the same songs on it from the cd. Also. hehe If anyone has Baltimore(pressed vinyl), Y Kant Tori Read(pressed vinyl and/or cd), or More Pink(cd) for sale or knows of someone that is selling any of the above please e-mail me and let me know.
