Only problem is, and I've been crucifed for this a few times, once
you learn to hide your feelings and to show no weakness, it becomes
a part of you. It's very difficult to change this behavior once it's
internalized. Which means that if you're an outsider -- but a strong
outsider -- you lose a bit of yourself.

I've been told a couple of times that I have no emotions. Usually
this happens when I'm in a relationship. How do you tell that other
person that you care deeply for them when it exposes you to them? In
the paradigm of rats, it's equivalent to exposing your belly and
neck and closing your eyes.

*shudder* Now, I'm not saying that this is anyone's fault but my
own. It's an issue that I'm dealing with, constantly. But
nonetheless, it seems that everyone suffers from these jackals
of childhood. Even the ones who came through 'unscathed'.

.. And on another entirely different note, I just figured out
why things aren't going right with my play. Stupid stupid. Something
I should have known before, but hey, I'm an engineer, not an actor.
But that's it, isn't. Actors don't 'act', they 'become'. God, I
am such a dolt sometimes. If you want to make it believable, you
have to believe it yourself.

The engineer strikes again, it seems. Got problems? Find an
engineer. :o)

i think marketing is so involved in the whole "what's popular" thing, that's
it's impossible to say "what if" here.

what i can say is this: remember the hip-hop thread? remember Steve's
classic "we know what we like and we don't need you telling us what to like"
speech? people have their schemas as to what form of music they like and
what they don't like all in neat little packages in their head. people
listen to dance stations and say "aww....country sucks." all of a sudden,
their local dance station starts playing "Still The One" by Shania Twain,
and they're out buying her album. the power of marketing (and a hell of a
lot of basic behavior mod. and condioning) in radio is pretty amazing. the
song you hear before is probably as important as the actual song itself.

if there were no radio formats whatsoever, we'd have a bunch of college-type
stations in which the DJ's played what they only like. you'd never hear the
same song twice in a two-hour span (here's a question: is the minimum time
between actual spins of a song on station two hours? i've always thought it
was...) one day, a program director would look at his request list and say
"gee....we're getting a lot of requests for this song. let's try and play it
more often...." all of a sudden, boom....a playlist is born. you can't
escape capitalism. there's only one alternative to all this....

Move to Cuba. :)

>Does this mean good singles should be totally new, outrageous,
>etc.? Are good singles open to faddishness, not necessarily in
>following fads, but in breaking them?

i don't think every single out there can be new and outrageous.
if we're defining a "good single" as "one that sells a lot and gets played a
lot," i think we're looking at a good single simply just being one that
sticks in your head and offers of something lyrically that most people out
there can relate to. i don't think "breaking fads" has anything to do with
it.

speaking of breaking fads, both Vanilla Ice and Everlast (of House of Pain
fame) both have hit singles......on rock radio. you can all join me in
saying "what the fuck?"

also....how do you go from "see our mother put to death....see our mother
die" to covering Bob Seger's "Turn The Page?"

# time you heard it....but when the uninitiated ran out to buy the
# "Pornografitti" album, they were in for a rude awakening, weren't they?

>Yeah, like, the album sucked! ;)

here's a lesson i learned long ago: you don't mess with Extreme. them Boston
music fans take their music seriously, and those guys pretty much achieved
saint-like status over there.

i think Gary Cherone-era Van Halen is fair game, though.

MAN, THAT ALBUM SUCKED ASS.

Nuno's solo album wasn't a walk in the park, either.

# more
# recently, "Walking On The Sun" by Smashmouth and "Fly" by Sugar Ray were
# huge hits and really catchy tunes which sounded very little like the rest
of
# each band's material.

>Is this an indication that they were specifically trying to write
>singles?

i don't know. we have to ask them.
maybe they just wanted to write a lighter song and the record company THEN
told them "hey....this would be a big hit...."

# that's not a 70's thing at all. it's what almost every artist getting
played
# on rock or alternative radio does. most of what you hear on the radio are
# "stress tracks" and not "singles." they're songs chosen, either by the
band,
# record company, or radio station, for a station's playlist. there's no CD5
# sitting out there anywhere.

>Hmmm... examples?

most of rock radio. listen to the radio. then go out to your local record
store. anything you don't see a single for on the racks isn't a "single."

there's really not much of a difference, though. the stress tracks are meant
to push the album just like the singles are. there's just no $1.99 cassette
single out there.

this is all so damn confusing. why couldn't i have been born in the 1600's.
i betcha i would never have to have written "why did Mozart not release in
single for Sonata #6 in D Minor? I LOVE THAT FUCKING THING!!!"

>Let me rephrase that: there are some artists out there who see
>remixing songs as an artform, and I reckon they're very good at
>what they do. What I mean is, what is the artistic merit of an
>artist saying "we need to remix this song to get it into the
>clubs"?

a lot of remixes aren't really "club friendly."
i'm not an artist. i don't think i'll ever have to ponder whether i want my
song remixed or not, but i think it'd be interesting for an artist to see
how someone else sees their work or what someone else would do with it.

as for the clubs, the artist themself may be really into club culture, or
they just want their song to attract a wider audience. i think both of these
probably apply to Tori, to an extent.

>Are your hip-hop albums available at my local chain store, or do
>I have to special order them? :)

hey....you can go to Best Buy right now and buy the new OutKast album and
listen to live congas and sitars with your rap. you can buy the new Canibus
and hear his wild philosophies about why the earth may not be #.4 waters and
secret government files kept in the 1940s on extraterrestrials. it's not
exactly hiding out there.

>That is a good point. I was speaking more of the younger people,
>since this started on the subject of young artists seeking out a

think about how easy it is to express yourself and what you believe in
through hip-hop. hip-hop is a very direct medium. you have some type of
musical background and you have a voice, telling you exactly what they mean.
think about how many people you'd be reaching. hip-hop dominates the charts.
if you had message you needed to get across in the 60's, you'd choose folk.
in the 90's, a lot of people (not all) choose hip-hop.

then there's the fans of "old school," who did grow up on hip-hop. it's not
about the message there. it's about love for the artform.

or maybe it's that rock music was a hell of a lot better off 10 years ago
than it is now.

i'm still waiting for the next Guns N Roses or Nirvana to kick me in the ass
and change rock n roll again. it didn't happen this year either. i almost
thought it would be Prodigy, and i pray to god almighty that it's not Korn.

that's not a knock on the beautiful redheads who are on this list, by the
way.

here's the amazing thing: i was at the house. in between all the madness
that's going on, there's four girls, three of which are honor roll students.
there's "say no to drugs" posters all over their room (there's also some
N-Sync posters.....i'll have to make that a focus of therapy). the aunt has
envelopes and envelopes of report cards, awards, etc. the girls are the
sweetest, most out-going things i've ever seen. there's a very structured
system to the madness which goes on in their house. i was amazed. yes,
there's those envelopes with the sex pictures (which the aunt now says the
little ones have no knowledge about), there are Catholic saints all over the
house, there's five girls sharing one bedroom, two brothers with legal
problems and daughters already, shady characters coming to visit all the
time, and the rest of the problems that go along with living in inner city
poverty.........but these girls are amazingly very well-adjusted.

you have to give all the credit in this world to their aunt.
i may say otherwise later, but right now, the woman deserves sainthood.

>If you don't like Ally M., please don't take the time to tell me so! :)

i've never seen the show, but i remember Calista from her role in "The
Birdcage." i thought she was gorgeous back then. i saw some pictures of her
now in the tabloids and people are right, the girl is downright skeletal.

Our mighty leader:

>>>>>Okay, I'm not one for making "rules" for the list (except
for the one about not mentioning Tootsie Rolls... I meant
that), but I'm wondering if we should make a group decision
to reject the use of the phrase "true fan" (or any facsimile
thereof) on RDTRN.

I find the Torier-than-thou game very tiresome and ugly and
I would be happy to see Toriphiles stop beating each other
up like that and respecting each other's level of involvement
without passing judgement.<<<<<

I agree, absolutely. I'm not sure about a blanket ban, being the free speech
extremist that I am. But I despise the "Torier-than-thou" game myself, and I
think that "true fan" stuff should at least be regularly met with a barrage of
contempt.

And I'd take it one step farther than just talking about people within the
list. I've read a few too many snide comments about all those awful people at
the concert who just want to hear "Spark" and who just got into Tori this year
because she's trendy and who haven't been following her since Little
Earthquakes like the true fans and yadda yadda yadda. Well, speaking as one
who has been there since LE, I'd just like to say this is bullshit. Bitching
about people at concerts because they're rude is one thing, but holding them
to some abstract standard of fandom is quite another. And it's not OK.

*Whatever* people want to get out of Tori's music is fine. If you own 50+ Tori
CDs and follow her on tour like a Deadhead and have met her umpteen times,
fine. If you like a song of hers you heard on the radio and decide to go to
her show with your friends and think the show was pretty good but not as good
as the Smashing Pumpkins or whoever, also fine. Tori is there for all of us.
*None* of us have any more right to her than anyone else.

So yes. Next time you're preparing to present yourself as a "true fan" of
Tori's as opposed to someone else, in *any* context, stop and think about what
you're saying first. Because, actually, what you're saying is pretty ugly.

And while I'm in bitch mode, I want to comment on Jen's recent post where she
dissed Alanis and "supported" her opinion by passing on tales of what a
shallow twit she was in school or whatever. I see absolutely no need for that
sort of thing. Just because you dislike someone's music, you feel the need to
pass along hearsay stories from warped perspectives that personally insult the
artist who dared make music you don't like? Also not OK, IMO. As with the
"true fan" nonsense, there's a difference between caring about music and just
being rude.

Besides - and this comes from a non-fan of Alanis' music - I saw quite enough
of the "Alanis is Satan" posts during her last album's reign over the charts.
Let's nip this thing in the bud and resolve to just say no to tiresome Alanis-
bashing, OK?

And while I'm in the put-the-lie-to-my-RDTRN-name mode, I just want to say
that Jorge is stupidly, horribly wrong about Two Girls and a Guy. Just
kidding, J-man, and thanks for the recent compliment. But I do like that movie
a lot - there's a lot of intelligent talk and mildly daring ideas about sex to
be had there. And the acting by Robert Downey and Heather Graham is terrific.
(Natasha Gregson Wagner is fine, but she's IMO not quite at the level of the
other two.) If you haven't seen it, rent it for sure.

And I certainly agree with the stuff about Heather Graham. I noticed her a
long time ago (when she was on Twin Peaks) just because she was so beautiful,
but she's developed into an actress of great depth, subtlety and even mystery.
And she's gotten even prettier! Mega-sigh.

Of course, *I* have been a true fan of hers for longer than Jorge or any of
you other Heather-come-latelys. Heeeeee.

Steve the Sweet Fat Man

PS: Tootsie Rolls, Tootsie Rolls, Tootsie Rolls! Hah! I spit on your
restrictions, Censorious Violet!

in the interest of saving bandwidth by not wasting my complete energy on these
jokers, i'd like to point your attention to a review of last night's
poughkeepsie show (jointly) written by 2 people up on mikewhy's fabulously
impressive dent reviews page.

i don't mind people being immature, usually. or at least i try not to. when
it's excessive, or inappropriate, i, like most of us, get somewhat annoyed.
when you're fucking with things you shouldn't, that pisses me off. but when
it's 2 people supposed to be doing their job (in this case, i believe these
clowns are supposed to be journalists) being immature just has no excuse.

it's one thing not to have things going your way, but it's another thing to
start blaming others for that. referring to people as "unhelpful ticket
asshole #1" because one's tickets weren't there at that given moment is
pointless (whether or not they were supposed to be there at that moment is
really irrelevant, especially since these clowns got in). nor does referring
to hotel employees doing their job as "bleach-blonde hotel harpy" have any
merit.

again, it's one thing when you're a little tyro running around like a spice
girls' fan trying to get tickets to a show. that can be amusing, maybe. but
when you're supposed to be an adult- and ON THE JOB (unless columbia u. just
tends to hand out free tickets like that often), argh!

so, to the "two crusaders"...i don't even know if you're on here, and i could
care less. if you guys are really journalists, what a shame. and i thought
columbia took their journalism seriously.

shit likes this makes me think...."man, i think even kerri klein had a point
of sorts."

or maybe it's just me. maybe I'M the asshole for not being so cutthroat about
shit like this.

"...there's two COMPLETELY city-looking assholes standing in the middle of a
parking lot."

at least i didn't say it.

You know what everyone? I think Tangerine Dream should get RDTRNer of the
week. not only is she the one who always replies to my terribly tramatic
posts, and tries to help others, but she just seems like a generally nice
person. I went to her website tonight, and not only is she nice, but she
is also gorgeous. (I don't mean this to embarass you at all...i just read
the post about how you said that your mom said you were ugly, and when i
saw the pictures on your web site, I couldn't imagine how she oculd ever
say that....)As I read all the mean things that people did to her in high
school, I hoped that those same poeple were checking out her site now and
saying, "we couldn't have been more wrong if we tried." Honest to god, I
hope that I bloom like you Tangerine! As a 120 lb no-figure 18 year old,
I'm hoping for the late growth spurt...but looking at my mom...i think I'm
just wishing on empty air! Its ok...I like who i am! But I just wanted to
give her the official RDTRN award for the week, for being a generally sweel
gal =)

Ok...hmmm..not much else to write. I just had some drippy eggs and coffee
at the local diner, while trying to fight off the crazy drunk guys next to
use. They weren't flirting with us mind you (they were there with their
wives) they were just trying to be annoying. After trying to steal our
jelly (at which point I said, "You guys have your own jelly, why do you
want ours?") and then trying to tell us to order fries so they could eat
them, yelling at our waitor (which as a waitres I take offense to) and then
trying to get us to pay their bill,...not to mention asking my friend Marie
if they could look at her breats because she looked like Jenifer
Lowe-Hewitt (at which point I said, "Hey guys...there's a line, and you
just crossed it...please bug off...") I had had enough!!! Ugh...some
people are so BELIGERANT when they are drunk...but it was kind of amusing
in a "these-are 30 year old men who have nothing better to do but bug the
local college kids" kind of way....

Well i need some sleep. I have my radio show tommorrow!
Hugs!

to...I oved the experience. I can' do it 20 times because of shcool and
money, but whatever floats your boat. Doing it or not does not make you
"better" or not...just different. you can't but a quality to fan-dom.
Ok..enough on that...
As for the posting the songs thing, some people like to see what songs were
played at the concerts. I mean, I know you can get them at the Dent, but
some people like reading them here. It is nice to see what people thought
of the songs and whihc ones she played at secret time etc...I mean, this is
a public list, if people want to write what songs Tori played, more power
to them. I don't mean this is a bash or anything, I just think that it is
important that we remember that this list is for all kinds of posts: life
stories, Tori sToris, Tori concert info, and especially songs....so poeple
can post what they like =) I know I've taken up my fair share of space in
the last two months, and I wouldn't have it any other way...take this one
issue for example! lol

Night all!
Love,
becky

I love Sandman and SIP. SO good....Brief Lives is the best of the Sandman.
I love that Delirium quote that Michael used: " YoU lOoK. uM...yOu LoOk
LiKe YoU uSeD tO, OnLy DiffErEnT. wEll, i JuSt CaMe tO sAy. AnD i'M gOiNg
AwAy AgAiN, nOw.." I used that in my zine. that was the first Sandman I
read and it was so good...SIP is good also, but I haven't gotten a chance
to read it in awhile (no $$$). God...I've posted like 40 million posts
tonight. I just got both digests at once, and instead of being smart and
addressing everything in one post, I split it up. I guess its kind of
better, because then people can see the different subjects and they won't
just SCROLL on by b/c it is a long MASS of text...teehehhe
=)

I go from day to day
I know where the cupboards are
I know where the car is parked
I know he isn't you

Jen--this is such a good quote...I didn't like the Dakota version of HJ at
first, now I love it. it is as if it is a totally differnt song...which it
kind of is...like a different emotion almost. Sigh...I love both of them...

Someone asked about how we got our letters to Tori..well I went to the pre
show meet and greet and asked her to play my song there. That is generally
how it is done...I also gave her my letter there...and she played China for
me...sigh...i'm still reeling from that....Sigh....

Hmmm...Oh...I kept meaning to say, I'm a redhead too! yeah! Kiss me!!!
lolololololololol!!!!

hello to all the boys and girls out there....

I'm thoughroughly pissed. I got into two fights with people over the weekend
about racism. The thing that pisses me off is that they were so COMPLETELY
stupid.
Fight ONE : I'm accused of having no conscious because I don't want to join
the school's anti-racism club. Ummm, right, that's logical. I recognize the
problem but I don't want to be involved in the 'let's be super PC' movement.
I disagree with their group because of their ignorance towards the anti-
semitic situations in Russia and Poland. Yes, yes, "If it bothers you why
don't you point it out to them?" I have but they feel that it's more
important to deal with American forms of racism. Russia is following in the
footsteps of Germany's Weimar republic, and look what happened then... They
also are trying to promote anti sexism. I think that's a bad idea because
they are trying to push women into a higher position than men, which will
produce reverse sexism of women towards men. I also think that being able to
joke about sexism is healthy. I personally don't want to be stripped of my
right to call men pigs...

Fight TWO: This girl is just WRONG. She was saying that she is being singled
out because of her Korean features and attitudes. Her example was that when
she walks down the street people will look at her because she's Asian. I
tried to explain that if I were to go to Korea that people would stare at me.
A reddish blondey curly head will stand out against a group of Koreans. She
said that's it's different because the Koreans aren't used to seeing
Europeans. Thw whole time she argued against Europe and made excuses for
Korea. ARGHH double standard.

Dumb fucking arguments. I kept trying to explain that by excluding
nationalities, you're ignoring the culture of thousands of people. I would
much rather be known as a British girl rather than just a girl. My friend
Eddie is incredibly proud of his South African heritage and wants to be
associated with his culture rather than distanced. I think that there's so
much pride associated with your nationality and culture that it's offensive to
say that it's not important and that it should be ignored. I think that fact
that I'm British is important to who I am.

grr.. this doesn't sound right written down.
Racism is bad
Cultural pride and recognition is good....

OK, I have to write this research paper for English and I need to gather my
info ASAP so I can start writing it. I'm not exactly sure what my thesis
will be yet - I'm gonna wait 'till I have more info but it's definately
going to have something to do with how Tori's music has helped people,
especially through difficult times. So if you could please help me with this
one - please email me telling me HOW Tori's music has helped you...try to be
as specific as possible (like if there was a particular occurance that the
music helped you through, what songs are most meaningful, etc.). *Anything*
any of you can send me would be *greatly* appreciated.
:o)
