Campbell did discuss these issues, but I'm pretty sure he wasn't the only one to popularize those ideas. The Church never completely tried to hide the tactics it used to convert pagans to Christianity; if you look at what happened in Ireland, for example, Catholic missionaries were told to build churches in the places where pagans already worshipped, and the stones of pagan temples were used to construct the churches. There's plenty of evidence that most major pagan deities and holidays were co-opted in order to make Christianity more palatable to pagans; likewise, the Virgin Mary became almost a goddess figure. I don't know what books to recommend on the topic as most of the ones I've read were written by witches - and they have somewhat of an agenda a lot of times when they're writing about this kind of thing. I've been waiting and hoping for everything to fall into place, and it -finally- has. I am the proud holder of one round-trip ticket from Atlanta, Georgia, USA, to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. I leave Atlanta on Christmas Day (ick), fly to Houston, hang out there for a coupla hours, fly to LA, hang out there for a few more hours (what to do in LA on Christmas Day for an 11-hour layover? :( ), then spend 14 hours airborne on my way to Sydney. I land there at 8:05am on the 27th. I'm going 'cause they're paying me to go. :) "They", in this case, is the University of New South Wales. I've accepted a Visiting Research Scholar position with them. I'll be in Sydney for a coupla weeks, then in Canberra for ten weeks, then back to Sydney until I get kicked out of the country on 01 April. (Well, I might leave earlier, I'm supposed to be at a conference in Seattle from 30 March to 05 April.) I can't even tell you how excited I am. I've never been to Australia before, and now I get to go for three months. Months! Not days, not weeks, but months. :) :) :) This puts off my graduation date for some unknown period of time, but I don't -care-. My MS can wait, 'cause opportunities like this don't come along that often. In other news, when I return, I might have a position waiting for me at IBM Research in San Jose. I had an -excellent- interview with them last week. The interviewer made it quite clear that he'd be happy to wait until I return from Australia, and even stated that there was no way that -he- would turn down something like that. I'll have another interview with them next week, and should receive an offer shortly thereafter. I'm going to spend the next ten days alternately leaping for joy, freaking out over the idea of 14 hours in a bloody airplane, and trying to figure out how to pack my entire life into two suitcases and a carry-on backpack. /nm -o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o [top] Date: Sat, 16 Dec 2000 02:27:36 -0000 From: "Succubus Barbie" <delirium1479@hotmail.com> To: rdtrn@torithoughts.org Subject: Daylight come and me wan go home Come mr tallyman tally me bananas! Every person who has ever had some Abercromie and Fitch wearing, pink-lipsticked, bleached blond haired conformist look at you saying 'Uh...huh. Or 'Okay....' or the ever popular 'Whatever!' whenever you say your ideas outloud. Would that be the mad poets society? Does it allow non-poetie members? Hmmmmm.... Shameless plug time! I've written a new story! It is called 'Oh Deer!'. Please read the following words: * * * Sarah turned in her seat to see a huge, mottled deer chasing after the car. It was thundering behind the old Volvo as Julie said ëOh my God...í over and over again, only plaintively so that God wouldnít be offended by her taking His name in vain. The animalís head was held high and proud, glancing in a furious, derogatory manner towards the car. The base of the music blared ominously as Sarah held on tightly to the armrest of her seat. Turning to Julie, Sarah said, ìWhat the heck is it doing?î Her voice sounded high pitched, as it usually was during a pop quiz in Biology or when she got a zit on the end of her nose before a school dance. ìI donít know!î * * * If you would like to see exactly _why_ a deer is chasing after a Volvo or what happened to Sarah and Julie, please go to http://home.sailormoon.com/delirium/deer.html which is my crappy unfinished new story page. Fun! I shall do some shameless plugs more often. In the words of the evil dude in the Lion King, be prepared! np: Beetlejuice theme song How Now, Brown Cow?
