  [ =======================>  In RDT History  <======================= ]

On June 20th in 1993, discussion on the relationship between
     Atlantic and EastWest.

In 1994, people sticking up for MAAG, some history on
fay/faries, more reviews (including reference to the
Sugar/Freddie Mercury story), and a bit about how Tori charted
     in Australia:

It [UTP] actually sold more in its first week of release
than the official number 1 album did in Australia. Trouble
is, a large amount of copies sold were not bought from chart
reporting stores; hence its debut at number 3.
  http://www.torithoughts.org/rdtrn/archives/upenn/digest.9406/msg00030.html#10

In 1995, a critical date in RDT history. Hobbes' email
account was shut down, presumably because of RDT members'
complaints to his ISP. Anthony reports to the list:

Since it has been the subject of much recent discussion on
rdt, I thought I should mention that I received a "User
Unknown" bounce message for yesterday's digest from the
address hobbes@scn.org, and concluded that this account has
been discontinued. I have unsubscribed this address from the
mailing list as is normal for such bounce messages.

In the same digest, Anthony announces the list is being handed
over to Chris Meyers and Chris introduces himself to the list.

People would probably be surprised by just how much of the
subsequent policies of both Chris and myself were colored by
the whole Hobbes ordeal. For instance, it is because of what
happened with Hobbes that the list software is set up to reject
messages over a certain size and with too much quoting; this
was done specifically to prevent the malicious re-posting of
digests back to the list a la Hobbes. This is just one of the
many remnants of the whole sordid affair, so ironically, even
years later, Hobbes presence still has a palpable effect on the
list each and every day and the mere mention of his name reduces
good men to tears and causes whole villages to riot.

Also discussed during this time: the purpose of sex, Tori's hair
colour (yes, the exact colour names), and teachers.

In 1997, part 5 of the Bosendorfer story, many reports of Tori
     on VH1's Crossroads.

In 1998 the results of a list b-side/rarities poll, Plugged
tour dates (including a "not even anything tentative" report
for Australia), some Black Dove lyric interps, the first plug
for the TALD, and some comments by Tori about Northern Lad.

In 2000, clones, member rape stories, depression and the family
situation, and how Tori listening habits have changed over
     time.

In 2001, more on the death penalty, plus news that Tori would
appear in the film documentary "Mayor of Sunset Strip" [which,
as of 2002, is still unreleased and has a tentative release
date for 2003, but we'll believe it when we see it].

phew. for the past 3 days, i've been driving, driving, driving! well,
today and monday i just did a couple errands, but last night i drove all
over town in the evening (during a thunderstorm) and night. i'm a bit more
confident about driving though. i'm better at driving now than 2 years ago
when i had the crash that left me severely scared of driving. i'm more
cautious and careful anyway. and i'm getting better at left turns,
intersections, and accelerating and braking without giving passengers
whiplash :)

anyway, i guess i'm behind on rdt posts.

yeah, my grandpa gave me a dulcimer the summer before he died. i think it's
a mountain one, anyway it's about 2 feet long and has 5 or 6 strings. i can
only play it a bit (i have as much musical talent as a dead fish), but one
of the knob thingies is broken so i can't really play it. so i have a wee
bit of experience anyway.

cyndi, glad your sis is feeling better! hope everything turns out all right
with the baby and everything!

I've played zither - it's fun instrument with an odd sound.
(at least I -think- it was a zither)
two strings on one tone, and a third on another - everything has this really
wild tonal metallic sound to it... Wild!

from my CD collection, mostly from names of songs *g*:

The Doors - Riders In the Storm (if nothing else the sound of rain

     Green Go The Rushes
Mercedes Lackey - Of Cabbages (I also have the album...somewhere)
Chris de Burgh - The Tower

Hi hi,
Since Kazaa was recommended, just a warning:

There's some deal that Kazaa has where they can
somehow eventually charge you for downloading songs
(don't know how; I'm not that good with figuring out
how ISPs can be used to trace things back to you).
The mentioned it on the news one night, and then I
looked it up and asked some computer savvy friends
about it, and they said that they don't use Kazaa
anymore because of that. In any case, I stopped with
Kazaa.

Probably the same deal goes for Morpheus and similar
products.

Right now, I use Audiogalaxy (not sure how safe that
is, as far as not getting charged) or Grokster.
Grokster is "guaranteed" to be free of charge-- and
its format is the way Kazaa used to be-- much simpler.

*yawn*

Subject: I got the hots

I have the biggest boner for Eminem. I have been meaning to post about this
for the past couple of weeks now, but as all of you know I am infinitely
lazy and so just let my thoughts simmer. Until of course Tait posted,
asking if it was wrong to think ol' Eminem was cute.

I'm happy to admit quite openly that I have a crush on Eminem. The
freckles, the sour look, the occasional dabble with spectacles (oh man, am
I a sucker for guys wearing glasses). When I first started liking his
music, I didn't find him attractive at all. But I find him now to be
strangely endearing, and salivate whenever I see his music videos.

Actually, I didn't really want to talk about how attractive Eminem was, I
wanted to talk about the new CD, which I am also quite proud to say that I
went out of my way to get on the first day of release. In comparison, when
the new Tori comes out in September(? who knows, I'm not even following the
release dates any more), I will probably move into a "Yeah, I'll eventually
get it" mode. I'm just not stirred up by news that Tori's got a new album.

But Eminem? New album? Holy geez. It's been a while since I've been that
overwhelmed on my first listen to a new CD. The skills to pay the bills?
Man, Eminem's got the skills to pay off third-world debt. And I'll also go
on record saying that he doesn't offend me. I would honestly love to
analyse his lyric technique in an English class of mine; his use of rhyme,
rhythm, assonance, and syncopation (especially syncopation) is quite
inspired. But I challenge anyone to find one of his songs which doesn't
contain swearing or suggestive lyrics.

The album easily turns up amongst the best rap and hip-hop albums of all
time, staking a place in amongst Public Enemy's "Fear of a Black Planet"
and the Beastie Boys' "Paul's Boutique". Every single song, give or take a
couple of tracks, is fantastic.

("Fantastic"? I'm glad I don't get paid to do music reviews. Please bear in
mind that I'm supposed to be an English teacher, and I can't think of
anything better than "fantastic").

The other, almost more relevant reason for bringing up Eminem is my
curiosity to whether he's said anything regarding Tori's cover of his "'97
Bonnie and Clyde". As Eminem seems to be the kind of person who's happy to
take a low-level pot shot at anyone who dares criticise him, or even talk
about him in their interviews (Moby et al), I half-expected Eminem to take
a shot at Tori on his new CD. I scoured the lyric booklet several times,
but his personal attacks on other celebrities seem to be very limited,
compared to his previous two albums anyway. To my surprise, no Tori attack,
no reply to her cover of the song. So I am very curious to hear whether
he's ever said anything about it. My sneaking suspicion is that he thought
it was a well-educated cover (even if I personally thought it blew big
time, as did pretty much all of SLG).

The funny thing about Eminem? I wouldn't care to see him live; I think he
is a boring live artist (going by the "Up in Smoke" video anyway), and I
don't think too highly of anyone who sings only part of their songs, nor do
I think too highly of anyone who spins that much shit on stage, regardless
of how much it is for show.

A student in my class today do up a tag for me, as in a graffiti tag of my
first name. He asked how to spell my name, moved seats so he was sitting
next to my desk, and drew it up on a blank sheet of A4 paper. I am a sad
person, for I am about to put it on display on my fridge.

Tomorrow marks the end of a full year of teaching. I -amost- feel old-hat
at this. It is the end of term, and I am celebrating by going to the local
pub near my school and watching the England v Brazil soccer match over a
few bourbons.

-d. (thanks for the birthday sentiments as well, they made me smile).

Something that came to mind the other day (and I have no idea where it came
from), I was thinking about Atlas (Greek mythological figure) and how he is
said to have carried the world on his shoulders. Did the Greek's think the
world was flat, curved or a globe? All the images of him I can think of show
him with a globe, but I can't really recall whether any of these were more
recent potrayals or contemporary to the Greek era. And for that matter, how
did the Romans or others view the world? (I know the Egyptians saw it as
flat) I will be looking it up in the next few days, but just thought I'd see
what others might have to say on it.

Well Josephine, if no one else has already said it... we're in a little
quiet spot at the moment. Those in the US are lapping up the sunshine (or
something along those lines), those elsewhere are um... I guess finding
something else to do too! Things will pick up soon, and if you get tired of
waiting there's always the archives!

winterlion, you're giving me flashbacks of this place (theme park I guess,
but no rides as such) called 'Kryle Castle' in Victoria. There was a big
arena where they'd stage mock hangings and stuff. The torture display always
fascinated me (rats in the stomach and all that charming stuff). Fantastic

Tait asked:
<<Is it wrong to find Eminem attractive? I despise
the sexist, racist, homophobic tripe he spouts,
although I must admit that I really like his new song.
Say what you will, he has talent. Anyway, I can't
help thinking that if he wasn't such an ass, he'd be
cute, or I could at least think of him as cute and not
feel dirty. Thoughts?>>

Okay, unfortunately, I have about zero time lately to
read posts... so that's why this is going to be long,
so I can answer whatever questions about my opinion
that you may have before they can be asked.

*******So if you don't give a rat's ass about Eminem,
skip the following********

Oh.my.damn. Eminem is so f***ing hot!!!! And
seriously:
(a.) I don't think he's really homophobic. I think he
has:
(a1.) poor choices of words-- words like "faggot"
should not be used as a general insult, but
unfortunately, many people use those terms without
really having any negative thoughts about actual
homosexuals.
(a2.) he's misunderstood. I can give many examples in
which people have complained about specific lyrics,
only because they fail to see his sarcasm. He's very
sarcastic, and usually criticizing the ideals that he
seems to be spouting. (ex: "Well, some of us
cannibals who cut other people open like
cantaloupes.... But if we can hump dead animals and
antelopes then there's no reason that a man and
another man can't elope." Ahem, so despite the fact
that he uses the word "faggot" too too often, maybe he
actually believes that with all the fucked up and
stupid things going on in this world, why on earth
aren't gay people allowed to get married if they want
to? Next people will be saying that "Drug Ballad"
from the Marshall Mathers EP is actually promoting
drugs. If you're not familiar with the song, do
yourself a favor and go look up the lyrics. Maybe
then you'll get an idea of how sarcastic he is.)
(b.) Racist? Eminem is racist? There are so many
people who claim that, yet where's the proof for that
one? Because he says that Dr. Dre is like a father?
A BLACK man is like a father to him?! AAAAH!
(c.) however, he is still sexist-- without question.
'97 Bonnie and Clyde is still really disgusting, and
most of the things that he says about his mother
disturb me. But, hell, I'd rather have an honest
celebrity who gets his feelings out through his music
than one who goes ahead and actually abuses (or even
murders) his spouse. And there are plenty of those
type out there. And he practically elevates his
daughter to goddess status, so it's not women in
general that he seems to hate.
(c1.) Using words like "slut" and "bitches" does not
a sexist make. They give a bad message. I fault him
mostly on poor word choice, once again.

I disagree with his word choice errors. I've already
talked about this on-list when Kevin was around, and I
don't feel like doing it again. Using words like
those are dangerous. But here's a loophole for
Eminem: Maybe since Eminem is not being perceived as a
role model, and has argued against people seeing him
that way on just about every album, using words like
those are to show what should NOT be done. He makes
those things seem utterly wrong, and yet he still says
them-- is that the point, perhaps? To provide the
example of how *not* to be, and to show how wrong he
really is????

That would be my take.

(As a note, this is not an attack on anyone who thinks
that Eminem is any of the above-- sexist, racist,
homophobic, what have you. I do, however, think that
there are a lot of misconceptions about his actual
beliefs. The fact that a large number of adults fail
to see his sarcasm makes it obvious that children
should not be listening to his music-- A point that he
clearly believes in, if you've seen the video for his
new single, or if you've actually listened to any of
the music on his albums.)

Thank you, and goodnight. Eminem is unbelievably hot.
 That's my point.
******End Eminem post*******

Hi Josephine!
