  [ =======================>  In RDT History  <======================= ]

On June 21st in 1992, reports on Tori's appearance on ABC's "In
Concert", and "how I got into Tori".

In 1994, a Washington Post article was sent to the list. An
     excerpt:

It was Amos's courage in openly addressing her own rape in
the a cappella song "Me and a Gun" also from 1991's "Little
Earthquakes," that earlier this month earned her the 1994
Visionary Award from the D.C.Rape Crisis Center, alongside
such figures as Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders, activist
Mabel Haden and actress MarloThomas. The center is helping
Amos establish a national rape crisis hot line, which she
hopes will be in place by fall. The idea for it came from
the hundreds of letters Amos has received in response to 'Me
        and a Gun.'

More defence of MAAG (and comments that it isn't the sole or
defining reason that members are fans), concert reviews. (and
in light of our recent masturbation songs thread, I thought
this was topical) A member posted:

if you wanted to know what i think... i think tori sould
segue from icicle straight into "i touch myself" by the
        devinyls...

In 1995, more detail about Hobbes's disappearance:
  http://www.torithoughts.org/rdtrn/archives/upenn/digest.9506/msg00040.html#6
There were also many "thank you" messages to Anthony for his
     years of service.

In 1997, topics include genocide and body image.

In 1999, evolution and more "oriental/asian".

In 2001, still on the death penalty thing.

  [ =======================>  In RDT History  <======================= ]

On June 22nd in 1994, more reviews, pictures from a recent
Rolling Stone article, Tori singing emotions, and response to
someone asking "Who the fuck is Sara McLaughlan?" (sic):

Maybe I should first point out that this kind of language is
not exactly how we talk to each other on RDT

     Oh, how things have changed!!!

In 1996, Crossroads, Tori's makeup, part 6 of the Bosendorfer
story, the Fugees, and one member concerned about Tori's love
     of wine.

In 1997, gun laws, and a suggestion for a 'Boys for Pele' shot
     (ie alcohol).

In 1998, old Tori appearances, more sex, and the trials and low
     pay of being a waiter/waitress/server.

Subject: Hi, I'm Butt Slammer, nice to met you ;)

ooh, I thought of a couple more rain songs:
Arrested Development - Raining Revolution (even has thunder sounds :)
Pogues - Um, I'll have to look it up. Track 11 on the disc with the
weimaraner (dog) on the front. :)

Winter is finally here. We've had a week of cold weather, it's been getting
down to about 7 degrees at night, tad windy. Beautiful. Been too busy
cleaning and getting dishwashers to enjoy it. Did I mention I'm making a
scarf for Tiarna? It's coming along nicely. I wanna steal it. She did choose
purple wool. (she also asks for green (lime) milkshakes. No question, she is
my daughter!). It's yummy soft.

Oh, but the new dishwasher is joy. The old one, very old one, was quite
possibly 15 years old, and the door didn't shut properly so not only did it
leak, it was very very noisy. This one I could actually talk on the phone
without having to ask the person on the other end to repeat every second
word. Tiarna says she likes the new one too. :)

I could be doing (ha!) backflips at the moment too. I'm finding it so
enjoyable to watch the first season of Stagate again. Well, so far it's only
been the the first ep (two parter), but just to see a forgotten side to
Daniel was nice. And of course Teal'c becoming a turn-coat. Ah, I should be
posting this to a Stargate list...

I can't believe all the people coming out of the woodwork to admit they have
the hots for Eminem. I just can't say I've ever seen anything in him
physically that I would expect to have admirers. (See, I didn't even say
anything about his personality!)

are you sure it's not "with all the fucked up and stupid things going
on in this world, why not let another fucked-up and stupid thing, gay
marriage, just happen?" that's what i always thought anyway.

but that's not the point. eminem is a white dude from michigan,
right? he's this little guy who (before his recording contract,
obviously) meant fuck-all to the world, just like everyone else. but
that's the genius thing about it: he's used that common-man image to
catapult himself into the tomato-throwing spotlight. sure, he's
racist, sexist, and homophobic. but so are you. the only difference
is "i got the balls to say it in front of y'all and i dont gotta be
false or sugar coated at all" - right? every single person in the
world has had a tinge of hatred (ok, well let's say disdain) for
someone who is not like them, and if you haven't, then you're a liar.
eminem is a child, meaning he doesn't censor his thoughts and opinions,
and, this is really obvious but, that's why people hate him, because he
says the things that you are scared to. people condemn him for using
the words "bitch" and "slut" in his songs, but think about how
carelessly those terms are tossed around in your everyday life, too.
you just think that no one is listening.

> however, he is still sexist-- without question.
> '97 Bonnie and Clyde is still really disgusting, and
> most of the things that he says about his mother
> disturb me.

how can you say that he's sexist "without question" when you've just
used all his other lyrics to show that he's just being sarcastic?
honestly, i hate musical interpretations (i know, what i have just
being doing here, but...). the only thing that eminem is giving you is
his words, and he can make you (being the plural you, sorry) thing
whatever he wants to. when i was still an english major, and in all my
writing classes, there were two things they drilled into our eager
little heads: 1) show, don't tell and b) the authorial voice is
different from the narrator's voice. you can't assume that eminem
wants to kill his wife because he sang a song about it. he never
said "hi my name is marshall and i want to fucking kill my wife, kim."
(unless he did say that and i'm unaware.) tori sings "i want to kill
this waitress" and we love her for it because she's liberating women
everywhere by breaking free of the chains that women place on each
other or whatever. eminem is doing the same, just way more harshly and
without any metaphor

i used to hate eminem. i used to think he was terrible and racist and
all that, but now i think he's just bored with music today and is
saying what he really wants to say. i mean, i wish i could do that all
the time. oh yes, he's a child, which means he wants you to love him
and pity him while simultaneously being cross with him, but... hmm,
thats a small price to pay. i own none of his albums, but that's
because i'm too poor to buy albums. the last one i bought was Strange
Little Girls, and it was damn waste of my $15.99.

anyway, back to my challenging and rewarding office job,
arija

p.s. i wish i didn't have to do this, but, JUST TO CLARIFY, i don't
hate gay people, gay people who want to get married, black people,
women, men, children, asian people, techno artists, mothers, fish, or
trapeze artists. i do, however, hate emily dickinson and whoever
turned the air conditioning so high in this office.

does anyone on this mailing list actually listen to tori?

if so, would it be possible for me to get a copy of "under the covers"
(1993? 1994?) from you? i'd mail you a blank CD (or tape, i guess, but
CD is better becuse i dont have a tape player) and pay for postage if
this is at all possible. you can contact me privately at
arija.weddle@yale.edu or post it to the list to [gasp] add some tori
amos content :)

Subject: crossstitching again

Yes, I've had the needle and thread out again. I've done a Tori crossstitch
bookmark. To see and read all about it go to my homepage (link in sig,
bookmark found on crossstitch page in 'her image'), or simply click below:
http://www.freewebs.com/drifts/crossstitch.html

I s'pose I should have put on the page, that if anyone would like one, and
doesn't mind waiting a bit for it, I do have permission from queen frostine
to use her dolls for them. So just let me know if you're interested.
