Subject: =?iso-8859-1?Q?I_Don't_Want_to_Grow_Up!?=
"I don't want to grow up" is something I hear from young people quite often.
This started me thinking about just when do we grow up. Biologically there
comes a time when we are around 12 that something dynamic happens. For
males it involves "white stuff" and for females it involves "blood". This
happens all at once and within a few seconds a threshold is reached and all
of a sudden you are able to take part in reproduction. Is this when you
grow up? In caveman days this may have been the case but for our modern
complex society there are several more years before you are considered
grownup enough for parenthood. As society has gotten more complex, this age
had increased from 18 in the 60's to probably mid 20's now. However, at
parenthood are you grown up?
I am 61, raised kids, have a responsible job, but I am not too sure I have
grown up mentally myself. When I define "grown up", I am talking about the
mental state. This is the mental state of such things as being responsible,
considerate of others, and forsaking all those activities considered by
society as being childish. When my family eats out at a family restaurant,
I get bored waiting for the food and usually draw eyes and mouths on all the
items on the place matte. I have this thing about seeing photos of
hamburgers with eyes staring back at me. My wife tried to steal my pen but
now she has given up and even has supplied a pen on occasion. You may say
to yourself "If he is not grown up by 61 when will I grow up?".
My dad, when he was in his 90's, lived in an assisted living facility 130
miles away in Cleveland. I would get calls usually once a month asking me
to come there because my dad did some childish thing. He would get into
fights, not flush the toilet, tell dirty jokes to younger girls, and all
kinds of childish things. I would make the trip Cleveland, straighten the
issues out, and lecture my dad to behave myself, visit for a weekend, and go
home. I did this for 10 years once a month. So, if you are not grown up by
the time you are in your 90's, will you ever grow up?
In the early 80's I worked with a fellow who was obsessed about the age of
30 and having to grow up. He went so far as to drive his car at 100 mph
into a concrete wall and committed suicide and hour before his 30th
birthday.
I did a post on strangeness where I concluded that there is no such thing as
a normal person. It is an illusion we are trained for but no one obtains
because no one has figured what normal really is. Likewise, I now say that
there is no such thing as a grown up person. We never really have grown up
mentally! We are governed by instinct hardwired into us that are out of
control as a child and with time we learn to create an illusion of
controlling them as an adult. Thus, that fellow if he understood this would
probably not have committed suicide because there would nothing to worry
about at age 30.
As I look back at my life, there were times that I rededicated myself to
creating this illusion. One time was that morning when I bought my first
child, a new born daughter, home from the hospital. My life was suddenly
different and there was no going back. It is difficult at times maintaining
this illusion. My instincts are the same as when I was a kid.
So many adults have failed at this. There are so many divorces caused by
one or both of the mates going back to childish behavior. They cannot
accept that being grownup is an illusion. Behavior of the other mate does
not meet their expectations. The relationship falls apart because there is
no forgiveness and the kids suffer. In many cases the kids become more
grown up than the parents do. In the future this era in history may be seen
as the age of the "rape" of the kids because of the breakup of so many
families for the childish behavior of the parents.
For you young readers, look in the mirror and ask yourself "Am I going to be
normal when I grow up?". Your answer should be twofold. One is that
however you come out, you will be normal because no one has figured out what
is normal and by someone's criteria you will always be normal. Second, is
that you will never grow up even if you live to be over an hundred!
Have to end.

Happy 4th boys and girls. I have the to do the 'family thing' today, but
that's quite alright because I haven't seen half of them in over 3 months..
I've uh, discovered I have this very strange condition called polymorphous
light eruption (PMLE) which means my body has developed an allergy to UVA
and UVB rays therefore if I do not wear sunscreen and desire a tan, instead
I get all these red itchy bumps, like poision ivy (and the fact I get that
so bad I end up in the hospital apparently isn't enough for the itch gods.)
all over any sun exposed skin.. it's disgusting and it itches so badly I
want to tear my skin off. Apparently each summer it subsides a little
because your body gets used to it or some weird thing like that.. but as
ofright now, I'm buying a lot of stock in sunscreen industries.. let's just
hope they don't do their accounting with Andersen (sp?)...
I think the stock controversy is actually funny, probably because I haven't
invested anything yet, but even good old Martha Stewart is getting in
trouble.. and the unconstitutional allegiance to the country.. mmhmm.. if
that's unconstitutional can someone tell me why my money "in god we trust"
is certainly okay?

and Koba. That goes for my thong too. Although, with having a 21 year old
boy as a best friend, I know the vast majority of "college boys" drool over
the showing of thongs and panties in general.. of course they're desperate,
too. :-P
Now for my patriotic duty of cooking food that the family will shovel into
their faces.

I returned Stardust. some silly idiot put the price sticker over part of the

Yay for Megan the now divorced :)
Cyndi, I would love to see Tori tour with an orchestra, as I adore the songs
with orchestration in them. But I don't envision it as something she will do
in the near future, if ever. For the up coming tour, I expect she'll be
touring with a band again.
Succubus Megan, lol at your Borders comment. Though personally the delivery
would freak me out more than the labour. Corners!!!
oh dear, a revival of Boomtown Rats fandom 20 years after the fact :)
Oh boy, first I type my above comment about Tori and an orchestra, and then
I read this:
ready to say something about it in the journal. She's just finished
putting the 60-piece strings on the album, is really excited and happy
And I nearly orgasmed!!! Very looking forward to the new album now (but
then, when don't I?)
Succubus (though not listed as such with the new addy) Megan typed:
>Isn't that a funny address!? (*Looks around at the people staring at her
Well, yes, I was laughing too :)
And just when you think the list is too quiet, something happens in real
life that gets people fired to post :)
Coops typed:
>ridiculous? Case in point: there is a 5 star hotel across the road from me
>at work and my view is that of the pool and gymnasium. Fashion shoots are
Funny, you didn't show us that on your guided tour. It's a wonder you get
any work done at all.
Holy smeg I'm caught up!!!

welcome to the list, Josephine! :)
oh duuuuuuude my sister just dropped in to chat me up a little (I've been
gone) and I touched her belly (she's 8 months pregnant now, and her
problem that landed her in the hospital is all good and okay now.. taken
care of :)) AND THE BABY MOVED!!!!!!!!! I FELT IT!!!!!!!! *amazed!*
our very favorite Succubus Barbie said: "Your hair looks like black

NAH you don't.. as Calvin (from Calvin and Hobbes) so perfectly
put it.. "I need a rewind/erase button.". THAT'S what you need. :)
Once again everyone, thanks muchly for the get-well wishes for my
sister.. *still buzzing over feeling her baby move!*
uh.. *feeling like an inexperienced nobody* what's "lub" vs "luv"...???
Matt said: "pretty quiet in rdt land isn't it?"
yeah.. THAT'S GONNA CHANGE, BY GOLLY!!!!
Bethey: Enjoy the theatre season and teaching yourself math! :D
Ade vented: "now why is it necessary to generalize toriphiles with people
who have body piercings and/or wear pants that expose things they
shouldn't?"
MY guess is (having seen it from the other side as well) that
Tori is viewed as Feminist-type music.. in other words, music for the
girls who hate men, for starters. Now while I never viewed it this way
totally, that's my guess, having once been a little (okay okay, a lot)
intimidated by Tori back in high school.. *shrug*
Violet said: "When you ain't got nothin' else, 12-year-old Cinnamon
schnapps will get you there."
what about a PEPPERMINT schnapps chaser to follow the cinnamon
schnapps with?? :D (never tried that myself, quite honestly.. just the
peppermint schnapps..)
"In 2000, depression, schizophrenia, and answers to the Really Deep
Question "If you could have anything happen to your body after you die,
what would you want to occur?""
*evil grin* I'd want to sprout a penis.. not for any other reason
except.. to see what the big whoop about penises are. :)
Chris said of the Boys for Pele album: "You could call it the college
album...the first unsupervised romp through all that is Tori.""
I never thought of it that way, but I REALLY like that analogy.
:)
hey Coops, when's the last time you had a Dicken's Cider??
Lish said: "I did get confused about the "rain" songs however.. why were
people naming so many of them? I hate coming in the middle of things. it
throws me all off.."
errrm..... Betheyyyyy.. might wanna show her my post asking about
a "hip-hop Icicle" and then the list of self-love songs we came up with..
:-D Lish, see, after that happened, I came back and asked people to name
lots of songs that have the sound of rain, that have rain in the title,
or have rain mentioned in the song itself. :)
Ade teased: "thanks to my lack of social skills (what was i so afraid of?
that i'd say something like "your hair looks like blue people?" *whack*
ow! stop hitting me, megan!)."
ROFL!! dude blue hair? ... ME WANT BLUE HAIR!!!!! :P
I took the SLG quiz.. and got the '97 Bonnie and Clyde girl..
You're very mothering and kind to those in your life, particularly
children. You would do just about anything to ensure the happiness of
those around you, including sacrificing your own life. Your one flaw
however, is that you believe too much in your ability to change people,
which leads to you being caught up in possibly dangerous situations (both
emotionally and physically). You are always there when people need you.
You have a tendency to blame yourself for everything that goes wrong,
though - the whole world is not your fault! Try to put blame where it
belongs, and give yourself some of your own nurturing care.
"There's a place called heaven and a place called hell..."
wheeeeee... lol

my dear megan former barbie current apathetic terrorist,
I loved what you wrote.
it felt so familiar... it also felt like those times you hear something and
it sounds so much like the conversations inside your mind.
you are a bright mind
(I hated the movie "beautiful mind" but something good came out of it after
all...)
you conjure such beautiful images such moving images with your words...
how could you be invisible?
(and yet, I know, we can't help it when we do feel like that)
feeling needed must appease the fear of ending up alone, I guess... I find
it quite selfish (I'm not saying that I'm not selfish myself)
I don't particularly like needing either... I think it's easy to confuse
needing and wanting with loving... and I don't think that love includes
needing... I will sound hippie and stupid, but: love is just loving. (you
can't even feel loved, I mean you can't really feel the love the other
person feels if that person loves you, can you?)
All the questions and possible solutions you state, I agree with...
I add one:
what's important?
really...
even being necessary is an illusion in the end.
religions can sometimes provide such an easier solace for all the
uncertainty. like a recipe or something which you will follow and breathe
easier knowing your cake will be just delicious.
Let's pray you're following someone good and bright... not some pack of
lemmings.
oh! and the irony of the sick and terrible things that happen... well,
the jokes of my life have been vicious... I wouldn't be able to consciously
put myself on such intricate and ridiculous situations (as I have been in)
if I tried...
I want to believe in No Coincidence too.
maybe that's just being stubborn and silly, maybe not.
wouldn't it be nice if we could learn or understand how to save ourselves,
how to live... instead of needing, wanting, waiting for some Jesus to come
down and grab our hands to cross the street?
I mean, don't get me wrong, based upon the little I've heard or read, Jesus
was about one of the coolest guys that have ever walked this earth.
but, can we wait forever?
you know megan? I wish I could be all carefree and selfless (and truly), and
full of love and all björk-song-like and whatnot, but I still share these
wishes with you and so many people:
>I want to do something right for a change. I want to do something lasting.
> Something significant.
you made me feel good today, to me that was significant...
sigh... what can we possibly do?
so, today is the last day before my admission test... I will go take my last
class in a few minutes and hopefully study some more in the evening and
tomorrow early morning...
but I have been feeling like shit
I am so sick
I hadn't had a flu so strong in a while (and that's saying a lot being me)
what sucks is that I've got an ear problem too right now, so I'm quite
down...
add all mental shit
and I'm quite depressed...
yet I had a needed ;-)
ego-boost today
in dutch class
my teacher congratulated me on my pronunciation
she said "very beautiful, you have a perfect pronunciation, just like a
Dutchman's"
and on living we go

That was a beautiful post, Succubus. I wish there
were something that I could think of to remark on it,
but I'll just say, "I hear ya", because you're much
better with words than I.
***
I'm the New Age SLG:
'You're the sort of person who's not afraid to try new
things. In life, you enjoy being loved and the chase
of love. You may have difficulties remaining in a
solid relationship, because once settled, the chase is
gone. In your life, you work hard and are serious and
determined. But all work and no play makes you very
very angry. Despite your belief that you are always
in control, you actually are controlled by the object
of your current lust, and will do anything to maintain
your dance of chase and be chased.
"I'll come running to you now, baby if you want me"'
Oh man, I can't believe how entirely right that seems.
I wouldn't have guessed that I'd be New Age-- I'll
have to listen to that song a lot more to see if I can
hear what the person who wrote those descriptions in
the quiz heard. And I never heard that particular
lyric that they chose for what it was.
Although I do know that if he wanted me, I'd be
running.
***
And I'd have to say that I *do* like trying new
things.
Linda likes a little Dicken's Cider ass? Gee thanks
Brian... if only you knew. ;-)

I wrote this last week and it's going to be submitted to papers from Mass.,

journalistic venture and I'm hoping that it's OK. The guy who asked me to
write it said it just needs a little punctuation editing and that he thinks
it's "beautiful". I think he's being flattering, but maybe you guys can
tell me what you think. I'm going to be in next weeks production "Christmas
in July", as an evil elf who exchanges all the toys with socks and sweaters.
It should be fun. But I'm also starting my math class on Monday (M & W

about rehearsals.
Hope everyone's holiday (those in the US) was decent. I think it's really
cool that Cuba had a celebration. One place I've always wanted to go was
Havana, and this boycott is getting silly. Communism is pretty much dead,
even China is into capitalism as far as trade goes. So let's open up Cuba

Doesn't sound like the story you know? Welcome to Main Street Theatre -
Saturday Morning Children's Theater. The Saturday Morning Players (as
director Tim Smith calls them) are sure to put a massive twist into any
favorite fairy tale.
Shelby Kracsir, 10, has been attending every Saturday morning show for the
past six years with her Grandmother.
"I really like it," Shelby said before the show. "Sometimes they switch the
stories around and change the ending, so I get really curious about what
they will do (in the next show)."
Director Smith, who also writes each weeks script, says "What I try to
accomplish (with each show) is to keep very young minds interested." But he
also tries to entertain the parents. "I'm aiming at two audiences with
totally different tastes." While there are references for adults (two ESPN
announcers gave running commentary for the Tortoise and the Hare race in
Aesop's Fables), Smith, who comes from Oakham, Mass, tries to make it
"totally suitable" for children.
"The first show I wrote (Cinderella) was too geared towards adults and the
kids got really restless." Smith said. "These kids are really young, so the
next one was way simplified." Bringing his MFA from Trinity Repertory
Conservatory into use, he writes each script the week before, spending a
full day writing three drafts until he has a script ready for the cast,
which gets an average of three hours rehearsal time prior to the show.
What makes it work are the MST Interns. "The interns are so positive and
energetic, the kid's just have to enjoy them. The interns are just really
talented." Smith remarked with a big smile.
Holly Hurley is a great example of all this positive energy. A former
cheerleader from Marshall, TX, she is a tow-headed bundle of energy.
Entering her senior year at NYU (where she is majoring in Vocal
Performance/Music Theater), she admits with a trace of Texan twang that this
is her first and last summer intern position. (The interns are, for the
most part, college theater students who live and work in the Main Street
Theatre Building from the end of May to the end of August for the summer
stock experience.)
Besides performing in the current production of The Wiz, she is entering
rehearsals for the next show Guys and Dolls, performing in the weekly
Saturday night cabaret that takes place after the evening show, in addition
to learning her lead role for this Saturday morning performance of Little
Red Riding Hood.
"I find the kid's shows a stretch. I'm learning to play to a different
audience. With adults you can be more Chris Rock; with the kids you gotta
be more Bill Cosby."
"My mother will tell you, I have never not acted." She said with a grin.
Her first time on stage was in a church production of No Fibbin' Mephiboseth
at age 10. Working with the children in the casts of Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat and The Wiz has been rewarding for Hurley.
"I like working with the kids, cause they're the age I was when I started.
I can tell them 'don't give up, look at me'".
She claims her earliest life goals were to be either a pro football player
for the Green Bay Packers, or a Princess. "Being an actress is the closest
I've gotten to being princess." But most assuredly, her cheerleading career
has put a few diamonds in her crown. She is a three time All American
Cheerleader, and spent three years on staff with the National Cheerleading
Association, teaching at cheer camp. In 1995, she performed in the
half-time show at the Aloha Bowl, and followed that with a spot in the 1996
Saint Patrick's Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland.
Each Children's Show is both interactive and highly imaginative. For
Little Red Riding Hood, Director Smith introduced some new characters; Mitch
the Talking Pony (Amanda Garry), Nasty Witch Wendy (Kara Boyer), and the
Croc Hunter (Dan Graul). The audience assisted Little Red name her new
pony, after Mitch tap-danced frantically pleading with the kid's to shout
out his real name; and helped to free them from Witch Wendy's prison by
helping chant the magic words supplied by the cast.
One of the morals early in the show was illustrated when Little Red realized
that everyone could hear her new pony talk except her. With the Croc Hunter
acting as translator, the audience learned that "selfish, spoiled brats" who
think only of themselves fail to hear the things that are important.
Not only does the cast act with flair and professionalism, each member also
performs musically with parodies of show tunes and popular songs they write
themselves. In a prior season, one of the breakout hits was Goldilocks
pouting "I'm not that Innocent", Brittany Spears style. In Little Red
Riding Hood, one great number was performed by Adam Enright as an enchanted
prince who growled "I'm An Ogre" to Madonna's first hit. Jeremy Randall
(Artistic Director) does a wonderful job not only playing back-up for the
singers, but also providing mood music for comic effect. As the wolf (Nick
Sinckler) begins to stalk Little Red and Mitch, the theme from Jaws filled
the room, bringing guffaws of laughter from the audience.
"I liked the wolf best!" Shelby said afterwards. "Yeah," agreed her friend
Kara Bintham, "He's so funny!" This was a common remark afterwards from
most of the patrons. It's not surprising; Sinckler is also starring as The
Scarecrow in the current run of The Wiz, reprising the role he brought to
life in the 25th Anniversary National Tour.
Sinckler, of Piscataway, NJ, is 21 and extremely talented. Starting as a
small child, he would break out in song at BBQ's and family functions, and
found he enjoyed entertaining people. His acting career began at age 13 in
a community theater production of Oliver, and he's been at it ever since.
"I really love the interaction with the kids." he said of performing in
Children's Theater productions. "The expressions on their faces.it's fun.
And if they like what they see, then they'll want to see more (theater) and
be exposed to culture."
He's had a few courses at community college, but surprisingly not in Theater
Arts. Nick is a Marine Biology Major with a reverent appreciation for the
ocean.
"I love the ocean." he said earnestly. "I want it to be clean. I want
generations after me to experience what I have with the ocean." He hopes to
be able to contribute to organizations like Greenpeace in a meaningful way
in the future.
After the show, the cast gathers downstairs to meet the children and sign
autographs in special MST coloring books that are handed out with each
performance. These coloring books are created by the local high school art
students and have a page for each show.
Hurley said she loves the autograph sessions and talking with the kids. "My
mom took me to a lot of theater in my hometown. If there were kid-oriented
programs (like this), I would have understood more about the theater. This
is good exposure (for children)."
Carolyn Sutliff, Shelby's Grandmother, pointed out another aspect of meeting
the actors. "Shelby was very shy at first and hide behind me (when meeting
the actors). The interns really helped to bring her out of her shell. And
it's something other than swimming and running around all summer. It's a
bit of culture."
Sinckler was completely surrounded with children and adults after the show,
and seemed to be loving every second of it, even as he was melting in the
hot summer sun dressed in his wolf fur.
"Sometimes the kids get scared," he admitted, "but it's their chance to say
what they liked about the show. Seeing the smiles on their faces makes me
appreciate what we do more and more."
MST Children's Theater runs every Saturday at 11AM through August 24th.
Admission is $5. Reservations are suggested. 215-536-3545
