  [ =======================>  In RDT History  <======================= ]

On July 9th in 1994, a bunch of tour dates are announced for
Tori in the US in July and August. Also, people were debating
whether to have a Tori Amos newsgroup on Usenet.

In 1995, people were talking about musicians who reminded them
of Tori. Among the nominees were Vanessa-Mae and Alanis
Morrissette. Also, people were discussing Neil Gaiman, and the
quoting of Tori lyrics in "Sandman."

In 1997, people were still discussing the results of the
     feminist movement.

In 1999, a member posted a fairly lengthy analysis of "Hello
     Mr. Zebra." Among the insights:

"Mr. Zebra (Tori's good side) ran into the bad Mrs.
Crocodile, and confusion (AKA. murder) ensues."

  [ =======================>  In RDT History  <======================= ]

On July 10th in 1992, Atlantic announces some tour dates for a
US tour of the Eastern United States in August.

In 1995, a member posted a paragraph "on the nature of rdt":

I was driving around today thinking of how many completely
non-tori threads there are on this list, and how actually
that is why this list is so much fun to read and everything
and I began to think that (metaphor begin here) rdt is kinda
like a club that you go into becuase you really really like
the music that some cool red-haired girl is playing on the
piano, but then you also get to talk to the people sitting
around at tables, and sometimes private converstions break
off (e-mail), all the while with the music in the background
and comments about that music (metaphor ends)... thoughts?"

In 1996, a member was celebrating RDT's fourth birthday (two
months late) by <surprise, surprise> going back through the old
     messages and reminiscing.

Hey everyone. Terribly sorry to bother you, but as a proud big brother, I
have a request.

As many of you know, my younger brothers Jimmie and Phillip are in a band
called 3 Percent Hero. I personally-- and it's not just because of the
similarities between their DNA and mine-- think they are geniuses. :-)
Seriously, it's a really good band.

Well, they have made it to Round 2 of American Idol-- not the TV show, but a
promotion by Salt Lake City radio station 94.9 ZHT. The utlimate winner of
the contest will get at least 100 minutes of airplay and will be introduced
to record labels, etc. etc. How is a winner chosen? By listeners' votes.

This is where you come in. You are of course not obligated to do this under
our friendship contract, and even if you don't, you'll still be my friend,
but it would help our friendship greatly if you went online and voted for my
brothers. :-)

Just go to http://www.949zht.com/americanidol/

You will have to sign up with the radio station, but they're not going to
send you lots of e-mails or anything like that. Anyway, the band is
currently listed as 3 Percent, but I am trying to get them to change it to
their REAL name. Just so you know if you get to the site and search the page
for "hero" you probably won't find them. Unless the order changes for each
visitor, they are band No. 60 or at least they were when I voted.

And if you don't feel right about voting for them just because you know
their big brother, you CAN listen to their song "I Miss You" right there on
the site to decide if you really do want to vote for them.

And you don't have to be a Salt Laker or even a Utahn to vote. You might
even help by puffing up the station's pride by making them think they have
online listeners all across the country. :-)

So go to http://www.949zht.com/americanidol/ and vote for 3 Percent Hero (or
3 Percent, or whatever they list them as next. :-))

Thanks, and now, get back to what you were doing. Oh, but first, go vote.

GO VOTE!!!!!

Doug

jim mathers - i love your posts.

violet - *many hugs* during your mum's recovery.

it's so good to see cheefooska juan posting so much. i love his words.

I'm really quite excited about Tori's new album now that I'm hearing
more about it. I feel a real "Under the Pink" connection for some reason,
and I have no real basis for that feeling except in my gut.

Well, I'm late for work. Imagine that.

Subject: I wish I'd read the label before shoving them up my arse

Beth asked about whether we want to hear about Tori's new album. Well, yes
of course! :) That's just me. But I can't decide whether I want to download
ASF (hmmm, if only Tori had called it 'Sorta Fairytale, A' ;) At the moment
(AFAIK - I'm a little behind on that aspect of things) there's just a few
words on topics covered, and considering how Tori twisted the pronography
idea for SLG, who knows how she will actually delve into these things?

One thing I do find particuarly interesting is the 'eastward' journey. Lots
could be read into that.

I have no real ideas on the dinner/friend/lover thing, other than Tori for
dinner (not in the Lecter sense of course ;) Friend is one thing I've never
though of, way to complicated to try thinking about it now (it's late ok?).
Lover? It'd be a fling. heehee. I remember in high school joking I'd need a
heap of cars for backseat escapades with the various 'famous people' I
wouldn't mind fooling with. It would be a heap less now, but hmm... ;) where
to start? Take a Trip on a rocket ship... LOL Whoever gets THAT gets... a
slice of raspberry mudcake (97% fat free) or a gingerbread man (did another
batch the other week, yummo). Though Dr Jackson would probably be ahead of
him (yes I know, they're the characters, but I know more about them than the
actors, just goes to show you looks aren't everything).

Must remember to read Cyndi's fanfic.net stuff.

I want a cool dragon stamp (rubber). I got one for my sis ages ago, but all
the ones I've seen since are either too cutesy comical or oriental style
dragons (and mes wants a western dragon type). Same goes for cross-stitch
designs, though it'd be easier to make a decent one of those myself than a
stamp. But if I do anything like that that's not bubs related it'll be a
pegasus and a unicorn (separate designs) for the lounge room.

Coops typed:
>I see our beloved Prime Minister (a.k.a. arse licker) is in Crete. Great!
>I'm sure they really needed another cretin there.

He didn't schedule that trip well did he? No day off that coincided with the
Wimbledon final. Of course if the Ashes were on in Fngland this year it
would have been a different story.

I think I'm rather thankful our dinner was the week before. So what was the
chilli in?

And I kept forgetting to mention you were quite presumptuous about how much
Dickens' Cider I'm partaking in at the moment. Very little change :)

Glad to hear your mum is ok Violet.

Subject: The end of the world

The reason I like conspiracy theories is that I'm no longer frightened of
them.

When I was a child, I was told nonstop (and indeed I still am told
nonstop) about how exactly the world would end with sufferings tortures
and government control. At eight years old, this is kind of a heavy
burden.

But one day in my anxiety ridden state I realized something that should
have been awful to me. The Government already has all the tools it needs
to control the populace. It already has all the monitoring devices,
military budgets, and public support it needs to just slowly close its
fist and take over.

Simply put, however, it's not profitable.

The default for humanity is freedom. It is always desired, it is always
strived for. Humans are more productive under freedom and even in times of
slavery, the slave owners eventually desire freedom for the slaves. In
short, we want freedom for ourselves, we want freedom for others.

There will be wars, and opression and torture...as there is today.

But this is not the end of the world, just one of its many cycles.

The thing is, in my humble opinion...the world will unite. It's
inevitable and the United States would either be a small small country
against a united world or it could be a major player in the world
government to come.

So I think our presidents, without saying so, realize the inevitable and
are going along with it. Because in the end, doing it or not doing it
would do little to our freedom, but the costs to the nation could be huge.

So in short, I believe ina great many conspiracy theories...but I don't
see them all as evil.

Violet, I'm so pleased your mama made it out okay! I told my dad about your
mom going in last night, he made a nod to his gods for you. ::hugs:: it's
good news, now you rest!!

Megan. <3 take care dear, it is so hard to lose a pet, i know... but your
kitty will be more comfortable soon and that will fill your heart with it's
own happiness. ::hugs::

Brian: Yes, I see that was blatantly obvious, however your innuendos are
your life force so I was merely stating you'd be lost without them, the
point to that mess is still alive and well.

I know I've got some suction, even if I'm not the best e-mail replier in
the world anyway. ;)

And no, that isn't like having your period every month, that was just an
unfortunate situation for you to be in and I'm sorry. People always wonder
why i won't even eat veggie chili.. I think I should print out your post
and hand it to them. :)

I agree with you on the Missouri ruling, Koba.
and you know it was you that was sucking down those hotdogs, don't deny it.

Cindy- I think you're one of my favorite people to come in after I left.
You are so excited, I love reading your posts, you're very positive as
well. :)

So, I got the new Tori song thru a friend of mine.
"A sorta fairytale", and running on just this song alone.. no this is not a
friggin' american theme. Just because it was written while on the road
after september 11th does not mean it will be. I believe this album may
have a song or two in reference to it or something.. but I don't think it's
going to be the great american feature for the year, sorry.

Um, Russ (who's not here, I don't think.)would be pleased because of the
obvious reference to "She's come undone" by Wally Lamb which he gave to her
at a meet and greet in Atlanta once.

In any rate, I'm not going to go in depth with the song because I don't
want to ruin it for anyone else... I figured out lyrics myself (badly at
that, but I've "corrected" them) but they are also on the dent and in the
Tori LJ community http://www.livejournal.com/users/toriamos/

if you want it, you know how to find me.
if you don't want it and think I'm the antichrist for perhaps sending it to
a few people, don't flame me, just decline. Thanks.

HI everybody!!! ......... um.. you're supposed to go "HI Doctor Nick!"
now.. .... ah forget it. lol.. anyway..

wild koba said: "it's one thing to write a retarded judicial ruling that
makes the pledge unconstitutional, but it's perhaps worse to pass a state
law requiring it."
I can't remember if I said something in here about it or not, but
my dad said that there is nothing.. ABSOLUTELY nothing in the
constitution that requires a separation of church and state.. and that
the reason why we think there is is cuz Thomas Jefferson gave a speech
and more or less hinted at it, and people got that all mixed up with the
actual constitution.. My dad can ALSO remember when they put "under God"
INTO the pledge as it is, so *shrug*

koba then said: "if we could dedicate as much time to those issues as was
spent in preparing the "pledge" case (the plaintiff clocked 4000 hours!),
the world would be a better place."
I totally agree.. I think this crap is ridiculous.

Beth said: "Andrea and I were talking today and she said she didn't want
to know too much about this album before it comes out. Do other people
feel that way?"
I *kinda* do, but things like tracklisting and lyrics and so on..
are definitely okay with me.. I mean.. *shrug* if it's not the actual
HEARING of the album, what difference is it gonna make? but yeah, I think
you (all of us) should definitely put spoilers in for the rest of us who
want to hear NOTHING of the album until it's out. :)

Beth said she'd invite Tori and maybe Neil to dinner: "What would I make?
Possibly my portobello mushrooms -- which I cook with butter and garlic
and fresh rosemary -- or teriyaki salmon over rice with broccoli -- or
maybe pasta with tomato sauce made from scratch -- or possibly roast
chicken basted in olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I guess it would depend
what they're in the mood for."
YOU'RE MAKING ME HUNGRY!! *whines and drools*

John said: "I feel like the woman in "You Can't Take it With You" who
became a playwright because somebody delivered a typewriter to her house
by mistake."
I wish I could do that with my whole wanting to be a rockstar
dealio. :P

Coops said: "I spent just about all of Saturday on the toilet. It even
made me bleed. Is this what it's like to have a period each month"
No.. not quite. It's a little messier in terms of blood.. and a
little more painful (at least on day 1..) and deeper in terms of cramps.
It DOESN'T feel like gas or dookie-related pains. Plus.. you only spent
ONE day in pain. some girls have to spend more than one day *in pain* and
most of us spend a lot more time than you did bleeding. o_O

Coops then said: "I'm also sure that Elisha would like a Dickens' Cider.
Note how I've moved the apostrophe, as I've never met anyone called
Dicken."
rofl! honey, I'm thinking most of us girls would like some of
that Dickens' Cider. Some of us are just waiting (either for the right,
erm, BRAND.. or say, the night of the "big opening night party") to get
some of it.

Coops then said to me: "Where would you want to "sprout" it, in the
middle of your forehead? It's not a matter of seeing, it's feeling that
gives it the big whoop."
        Oh, gee. @_@ okay.

He then said in reply to my question of the last time he had a Dickens'
Cider: "Come here and I'll tell you a minute after the fact."
        I.... don't think so. :D

Brad showed us some beautiful epitaphs and cards.. good stuff.. some of
it's pretty sad but good. :)

Violet: glad your mom made it through surgery! *continues sending good
thoughts and wishes* good luck with her recovery.. :)

that's all from me for now! much luhhhhv! *blows kisses and waves!*

i don't think "ari" was critiquing jim's virginity post. she definitely made
it very clear that she wasn't flaming him, and i think her question was
perfectly fair. nothing "critquely" about saying, "do you believe what
you're saying?" and especially since i can't see anything malicious about
her asking it....

so native american history, porn (what is it with tori and porn? jesus- she
should get laid or something), andrew jackson, and david "your asshole will
be" torn. some album this could turn out to be.

speaking of, i know i've sung torn's praises in the past, but damn it feels
good to know he's playing on this album. if tori couldn't get robert fripp
or vernon reid to lay tracks, torn is just as good a choice.

One of the things that freaked me out the most about my surgery was that I
would have to be in a hospital for any length of time. I visited my mother
daily in the hospital for months at a time and it was in a
hospital where she eventually died. So I don't trust them at all. In
fact I still suspect if she hadn't been treated by a nurse with a head
cold she might have lived longer than she did. (For those of you who don't
know, my mom had accute emphysema that weakened her body and her
immune system, so the tiniest germ would turn into
full-blown pneumonia for her, requiring ICU and the whole thing.) So I
didn't really want to be in a hospital at all, but I definitely did not
want to have to stay in one overnight. I did everything possible
to get out of it when they wanted to keep me because I just couldn't get
over being nauseous (and I wanted to just go and be nauseous
at home, dammit). Anyhow, so I know just how you felt - or I think I
do anyway. I'm so glad everything's okay. Just remember to visit her lots.
It gets very boring and lonely in hospitals!

well, yeah. i *did* say that. but i'm recanting a bit right now. i've
been listening to "a sorta fairytale" on repeat for the past half an
hour. i'll decide what to do about other mp3s as they come. whatever.
and in terms of spoilers... well, if people don't want to know about
the album at all they probably know what sites to avoid. so i think
adding spoiler space is going a bit too far.

so i don't know what i'm going to do. i'll decide as more information
comes out. i'm fascinated by what i've read so far, and this song is,
in my mind, a step in the right direction...

i posted this in beth's livejournal
(www.livejournal.com/users/anthologie) and then decided it should be
fleshed out for an rdt post...

in response to "a sorta fairytale," it's a tori song, but it's about
something totally mundane. it's about driving in a car, taking a road
trip, it's an extended metaphor. it's not tuna rubber or the other
side of the galaxy or riding on the vine on the clothesline.

don't get me wrong, i love that stuff. but... it's even less obtuse
than "a thousand oceans." it's refreshing. it's open. it's funny... a
song called "a sorta fairytale," without pandora or the black dove or
concertina. it's refreshing and i like it very much.

are we all growing up? well, no, according to jim mathers there is no
such thing. ;> but i noticed this with the "strange little girls"
interviews as well. tori isn't being quite the airy fairy flake she
used to be. the slg interviews, of course, could be considered kind
of out there when compared to the way other musicians talk about
their songs. but if you look at them next to the "under the pink" or
"boys for pele" interviews they are so much more lucid.

there's twitter in some places about whether or not this song will
push tori into the mainstream. i think it would be nice if it does.
her concerts sell out anyway, i don't think getting tickets will be a
problem for people who are determined. i don't understand why people
are so protective over "their" musicians. if someone listening to
adult contemporary radio hears this song and loves it, i think that
would be awesome.

wow. between this and the new counting crows album, it's been quite a
big new music day for me!

on another note, violet, i was very happy to read the good news about
your mother. *hugs* you were in my thoughts.

Subject: the Internet debacle

Devin gave me this link tonight to an article
by singer-songwriter Janis Ian about the whole Napster thing. It's the
most incisive, intelligent, and well-researched piece I've seen
on the topic so far, and I thought many of you (especially Koba) would
like to read it:

http://www.janisian.com/article-internet_debacle.html

A quote:

'The premise of all this ballyhoo is that the industry (and its
artists) are being harmed by free downloading.

Nonsense. Let's take it from my personal experience. My site
(www.janisian.com ) gets an average of 75,000 hits a year. Not bad for
someone whose last hit record was in 1975.
When Napster was running full-tilt, we received about 100 hits a month
from people who'd downloaded Society's Child or At Seventeen for free,
then decided they wanted more information. Of those 100 people
(and these are only the ones who let us know how they'd found the site),
15 bought CDs. Not huge sales, right? No record company is interested
in 180 extra sales a year. But? that translates into $2700, which is a lot
of money in my book. And that doesn't include the ones who bought the CDs
in stores, or who came to my shows.

Or take author Mercedes Lackey, who occupies entire shelves in
stores and libraries. 15 years ago she published a series of books
with "Arrows" in the title; she's been getting royalties ever since.
However, she recently put the first "Arrow" book on Eric Flint's "Baen
Free Library" site, and one royalty period after, she received over triple
the normal royalty.* In fact, payment on all her old titles increased,
suddenly and significantly, with the only change being the availability of
that one free book. I don't know about you, but as an artist with an
in-print record catalogue that dates back to 1965, I'd be thrilled
to see sales on my old catalogue rise.

Lackey says "It's what I'd expect to happen if a steady line of
people who'd never read my stuff encountered it for free?they started to
work through my backlist." I've found that to be true over and over again.
Every time we make a few songs available on my website, sales
of all the CDs go up. A lot.'
