Rantz posts:
I *WILL* be designing the tour programme for the new album's
tour (I still cannot reveal the LP's title, but hopefully
Tori will approve me telling the net groups soon) It (if
all goes as planned ) will have an INTERACTIVE bit in it for
the computer nerds amongst us, and I will also be pulling
random quotes from the net for some of the background
textures, so be warned, you words may be seen by millions
(ok, at least hundreds... ok, MAYBE ten...) so make them

around Feb maybe Jan, with the US tour starting in March.

hello again!
question for bethany, because it's about pottery: On this Thursday's "CSI"
episode it was mentioned that trace amounts of uranium were used at one
time to enhance the color of the paint and glaze used in pottery. While I
do enjoy the show I found that a little farfetched, so I was wondering if
that was actually true or not.
I know about radium being used for glow in the dark watch and clock dials
at one time but that was found to be dangerous long-term, so even trace
amounts of uranium seem just as dangerous.

hey I'm back! :)
about copy protection:
> Unfortunately this causes problems for the many many

True! IMHO, despite all the doomsayers in the music industry going on
about the evil threat of bootleg copies of their artist's material, I still
think most copying is done for personal use- making copies to listen to on
the go, or storing music from CD's as mp3's on their computers to make it
easier to access. And when I've copied something I've borrowed from a
friend, I end up buying my own "legit" copy anyway if I like what I've
heard- I did that quite often in middle and high school. Borrow an album
from a friend and make tape copy so I could get their album back to them
quickly but so I could still give it a listen, and ultimately I'd end up
getting that album anyway. Would it have been any different if say that
friend came by to visit, bringing that album, we listen to it, and I'm
impressed enough to head out to buy my own?
Rolling ahead to today, most of the copying people engage in seems to
follow a similar pattern, as well as downloading individual songs that
might not be available through more conventional channels. Good example:
in recent years, my parents have been slowly trying to find decent CD
re-issues and compilations of the oldies of the 50's and 60's they grew up
with, but hadn't had much luck finding them. A couple of years ago though,
my dad got a new computer and discovered online file sharing, and he and my
mom were finding all sorts of old songs that they never could find on the
compilations that are on the market. And they also use downloaded music to
supplement what they already have on CD, as well as doing what a lot of
people do, download some songs to preview prior to heading out to buy the
whole cd anyway.
>
>It seems to me that the real issue here is whether these file sharing
services

There needs to be a standardizing of the laws and the techniques for copy
protection- like copy protection that doesn't ruin the original, like I
mentioned with the movie videotapes and the recent rash of crappy-sounding
CD's.
And one other thing that might have an impact on cd bootlegging: once and
for all lower the prices of cd's to something more reasonable. Even as
it's become cheaper on the production side, a CD still costs US$15 or so,
which is even more assinine when a movie DVD might not cost much more!
(I've seen DVD prices around US$20 or so, on average).
I'm all for copyright laws and making sure the artists get their cut, but
what the company execs are doing is just going to make the bootlegging
situation worse.

Good grief, you think so? Considering there's a breed called 'Blue
Heeler'... well, lets just say unlike blokes with rec hair being called
'Blue' (or varients thereof), these dogs are often aptly (if unimaginatively
named).
Simon asked:
>Which reminds me- are there neighborhoods there where people get really
>uptight about the color scheme and/or landscaping of people's houses?
Yes. Mostly it is to fit in with the surrounding nature, or older style
construction (ie no ultra-modernblack roofed jobs). There was also a case in
Newcastle where one household were so excited about the Knights run in the
football finals that they painted their weatherboard house red and blue
stripes (the teams colours - in case you hadn't guessed). The house was in a
rather prominent place (and actually just down the road from the home
ground). I can't remember whether it was neighbours or the council (but me
thinks the council) who got their noses out of joint and made them repaint
it. I suspect a company did it for free, there was a billboard placed in the
front yard with a before photo (so in effect, the red and blue house was
still there).
I know I've been rather quiet lately. Potty training Tiarna (woohoo!) and
reading. I think I mentioned before that the next book on my agenda was 'The
Ill-Made Mute'. It's written by an Aussie Cecila Dart-Thorton (which I
hadn't realised before), and there I was thinking it was all monkish looking
by the picture on the front. It is oh so far from it. Took a while to really
get going (the second chapter seemed to drag on forever!), but it's proved
quite entertaining adventure-wise, fully of seelie and unseelie wights,
wizards, and a plethora of other pixie like beings. There's also a
phenomenon called 'shang winds' or 'unstorms', which, if you are not wearing
a metal-lined hood, can create a sort of lasting impression of you should
you experience a strong emotion (usually an unpleasant one) as it passes
through, which will re-appear any time another of these storms passes
through. These lasting impression are described as being like ghosts, so it
reminded me of recent discussions here. Anyway, if anyone is bent toward
this type of fiction I'd suggest giving it a go. It's also rather wierd to
have all of this mixed in with mentions of platypuses, echidnas, rosellas
and Australian flora. I wonder how many people read them and just think
they're a fictional part of the fictional world she has created.
wow ian.

does anyone read mcsweeney's (www.mcsweeneys.net)??? well, they also
have a quarterly magazine which they only distribute to random
bookstores, including this really crappy one in old saybrook, ct, to
which b. and i drove out to yesterday night (only to discover they had
only older issues, which we already have), but so i was perusing the
sale section (because i am my mother) and there were lots of really
crappy cookbooks on sale, which made me realize that i need a
cookbook. so, food gurus, please to laden me with recommendations. i
have this one that deals with cooking healthy pasta, but i'm looking
for something more along the lines of a) cheap b) not a lot of meat c)
low calorie counts d) cheap (the recipes, not the actual book). so,
anyone? (roxanne?) :)
ew, i just did a smiley face.
bethany, i felt the same way about minority report as you did; loved it
til the ending, basically because the movie took its time introducing
the viewers to this world (wow, the future is really fucking cool) and
then wrapped it all up in a hallmark card (the standing in front of the
window, hand on belly scene????? barf). i also just saw AI for the
first time the other night and LOVED it, even the ending. i mean, it
was the spielberg switch, which was not kubrick, but not bad. (but
WEIRD. who thought of that? "ok, guys, what should we do? hmmmmm...
HEY I KNOW. how about 2000 years later, some ALIENS show up....")

Hi,
I'm kinda new to the whole posting bit so be nice...
Anyway, i was reading everyone's fondest memories of their close encounters
of the third kind and figured I'd offer a "friend" of mine.
"Friend" because she appears frequently not because of shared feelings of
trust and compassion. Anyway, it started about oh maybe 6 years ago. I was
standing in my kitchen and turned around and saw two feet on the floor, not
my feet mind you. Anyway, I thought it was my mother so I cheerfully said
"Hi Mom!"...well the feet didn't belong to a relation of mine "living" in
the house. My "friend" would only let me see her feet...laced up boots with
stockings at the tops of them. Eventually she's let me see more and I see
her every once in awhile...about oh maybe 3 times, 5 at the most a year. I
believe it's a spirit, or ghost, or something. Almost reminds me of a
Watcher if that makes any sense. She just looks at me for about 30 seconds
or so..it's a weird experience..hard to explain because people usually don't
understand or don't want to understand....

Today in the history of my family (July 19) some plenty years
ago.. my mom was born. YAY!! :)
*waves at everybody*
Simon said on reply to my "don't wanna sound dumb" bit of shadow people:
"it's never dumb to talk about it or to share experiences you might have
had. I really wish our society was more open to discussion of the
unexplained- I still think many more people have had such encounters but
are reluctant to come forward because of the disdain expressed in the
"mainstream"."
I know a few people (myself included) who feel the SAME WAY,
Simon..
Simon in reply to my mom's ghost-in-the-house story: "Sometimes I wonder
if that's more disturbing than actually seeing a ghost when you think
you've heard something or percieve someone else in the room."
I wouldn't know, but I imagine it is a lot scarier because you
can't SEE it, and so on. My mother and her family lived in that house for
a few years before moving back to Oklahoma. (that house was in Colorado I
believe.) and every day, that ghost would come up the stairs and into the
room that she and her sisters slept in, etc. It was a regular thing, so I
think they just got used to it.
Simon on my view of night terrors: "Interesting that you've found info on
alien abductions that sounds very similar to the night terror
phenomenon!"
I can't remember if I gave you any urls on alien abduction stuff
or not, but I have a couple bookmarked, so just ask me if you want them.
:)
rofl.. our Succubus Barbie said: "No! You're wrong! It's still going!
See! It's 8:18 right now.... Technically the day won't be over until
midnight. So HAH!"
rofl! Megan, you crack me up. :)
Megan then said: "...I discovered this cool band called Fantomas, which
is this hard rock band that plays theme music in heavy metal style"
hahah ooooh! do they play any of the Nickelodeon themes?
seriously, do they? :)
Then she said: "I'd much rather think of roses and bubble machines than
guns. Stupid guns. Guns kill way too many people, most of whom don't
deserve it. Nasty nasty things."
and yet they're so glorified. WHY??
Oh and Megan, you're not the only one who hasn't heard ASF yet. I
think I'm kinda waiting for a video or something first.. rofl! "I must
listen to it whole and virginy!" virginy.. lol.. well hey--I feel the
same way. When Michael Jackson's Invincible album was on its way out, and
people were leaking it etc.. all I wanted to see was the lyrics. That's
not ruining the album for me, if you know what I mean.. I refused to
listen to the MUSIC until I got the album.. which I did on the day it was
released.. lol..
Megan then said in response to my exaggerated pause: "Oh the
exaggeration! (*gasps and dies*) ...Oh wait, I'm still alive. Nevermind.
The pause wasn't as long as I thought. (never hold your breath for the
pauses)"
yaaaay!! *sings from Hotel.. "I'm still alive.. I'm still
aliiiiiiiive.."* lol..
Megan asked: "Did anyone else just feel the general level of maturity go
down about a half-inch? Anyone? Okay then."
er I coulda sworn it went UP a good two inches! :D lol kidding..
John said in reply to Arija's comment of surveys: "Hey, why take all the
challenge out of getting to know me? That's like breezing through the
Cliffs Notes instead of reading the real thing :-)."
rofl.. what would you view surveys as? the cliff notes, or the
real thing?
Bethany mentioned a movie coming out in November called "Two Towers"..
um.. might this have to do with the World Trade Center? *curious*
Beth said: "I've seen this a few times in my area, with Native American
spirits who are either angry about a specific home or building, or just
angry in general about the development and use of the land."
Whoopi Goldberg's house, last I heard, was built on Native
American land of sorts.. so she has living ones come and bless her house
and stuff to, I figure, keep things from going awry.
Simon said in reply to my "MTV sucks" comment: "sucks so bad, astronomers
use it to show how black holes exists."
no doubt, Simon.. however.. when they premiere Tori's video on
there (and I'm sure they will!) I'm gonna watch it and tape it and then
turn it off until the next Tori video premieres. I keep forgetting it
sucks, going downstairs and turning it on, watching it for 30 minutes,
and turning it back off in disgust! :P it's miserable.
Anyway, enough from me, let's hear more from you people! *taps everybody
on the foreheads* hee hee! :)

Oh, and it will grow humongously on you. Just wait a little while. Belle &
Sebastian are about the most catchy, contagious fucking great band in the
last decades. The Boy with the Arab Strap is by far the best album, but the
other ones are awesome as well.
Me, I've been listening to them non stop for the last month and a half. I
mean it. And yes! I agree that they have the best titles: Lazy Painter Jane,
Tigermilk, Fold your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant. How could you
stay the same after that?
I'd recommend getting Tigermilk after BWAS, and then If You're Feeling
Sinister.
It's so sad to see yet anoher decade without the right people getting credit
for their work. While Incubus and Britney roam the world shamelessly
spreading their bad music, here's a band that could probably be the next
Beatles and they just don't get any attention. They are not with a big label
and they don't like giving interviews, is that enough for us to close our
ears and carry along the innane list of new music ( shit music ) at the
record store?
Something has got to happen in Musicland.
