On August 4th in 1993, a recipe for upside down cake was
posted, and members were discussing the Cranes, Sandman, Sarah
     McLaughlin, and Happy Rhodes.

In 1994, swear words in society, lots of comments were posted
about how Tori changes tempo and slurs words of songs when
performing live, responses to a member complaining that Tori
didn't mentioning the town she was playing in, Tori's lack of
conversation between songs, some members suggesting the light
show looks better from a distance, baffled responses to the
"urine in LE/SATY" question, Tori's expression of sexuality
(from the Sandra Bernhard interview thread), and feminism and
romance (also stemming from the same thread).

In 1995, a member posts about her self abuse and suicide
attempts, the list tshirts are delayed due to printer problems,
more comments on the bounced digests (and more bounced

okay.. I see my post that I was afraid that hadn't gotten posted made it.
YAY! :) I had quite an adventure today.. :)

At around 7PM.. my dad came in carrying a tiny little baby grey kitten..
my brother had brought it in to keep it from being run over when he backed
out to go home.. that kitty got lucky. anyway.. I hung onto it for a few
hours hoping that I could keep it but also hoping that the owners would
come claim it.. (I didn't want him having to adjust to a NEW home if he
already had a home..) I guessed it was a boy.. and called him Greystone..
and I took like.. 25 pics of him.. :)

sure enough, we went across the street and asked a few people in a few
houses if this little kitten belonged to them.. and then at 10PM a girl
came and knocked on our door and my dad found out that Greystone WAS in
fact, a boy.. (well IS. he's still alive. :)) I came down and handed him
over to her, she thanked us and immediately nuzzled him.. she obviously
missed him.. I'm gonna put pics up on my website soon.. keep your eyes open
for that. :) oh boy oh boy oh boy.. he was a CUTIE!!

and now, ON WITH THE REPLIES! :)

"*puts contacts on* ah.. much better." <--- am I a freak, or what?? :D

Simon said: "pj o'rourke is damned beyond redemption."
   why do you say that?

Simon then said in reply to my inquiry about penises and the big whoop
surrounding them: "nothing about them at all. a useless appendage.
evolutionary dead end, that sort of thing."
*gasp!* and this from a male! wow.. so why do some men pride them so much??

Simon then said: "true. ever notice that someone is always predicting the
end of the world every few years or so? And then there are all those
people who had egg on their face New Years Day 2000."
HA! I say the world will end when it wants to! ;)

Simon THEN said: "I say if the sick person you're visiting wants to "talk
shop" about their situation, then encourage it. I'd like to think that in
that situation I can relate some helpful or encouraging info for them."
yeah, I agree. it's like.. at least be there to listen to them whine a
little. they have a right to.. hell, THEY'RE the ones that are sick.. let
'em bitch a little and at least vent.. venting's good for ya!

I hate to be singled out as the ignorant one here but I've only heard OF
Belly and hardly at all at that.. who are they, what do they sound like,
where did they come from, etc etc.. I NEED ANSWERS!!

Lavs bemoaned her interesting week to us wonderful Arty Turners who
willingly listen.. dang.. good thing Tiarna didn't break anything, huh? and
then her wetting herself and so on.. yeeee.. I hope next week improves for
ya.. :)

Matt said in reply to my questioning which Portishead album he was
referring to: "it's portishead's eponymously-titled second album, released
in 1997 and containing such tracks as "undenied" and "mourning air". it's
likely that you've heard "glory box" and "sour times" off the first album,
"dummy". i.m.h.o. "portishead" is to "dummy" what "the exorcist" is to
"bambi"."
yeah I've heard Glory Box and Sour Times.. good songs there.. rofl..
interesting comparison there.. yow!

Matt then listed a top five album list to go with the movies.. don't ask me
to.. no way. I can't do it.. no f-in' way.

Ade said in reply to my subject of "hoagies and grinders, hoagies and
grinders, navy beans navy beans navy beans.. MEATLOAF SANDWICH!": "sloppy
joe, slop-sloppy joe..."
YAY!! someone knew where it came from! lol I love that song. :)

and er.. Ade.. interesting url about a woman addicted to nicotine patches..
HA! rofl.. interesting indeed!

and on that half-witted stupid note of mine.. I'M OFF to SAVE THE WORLD!
*dives into a window..* *BONK!* er.. nevermind.. *stumbles away to bed*

first of all, welcome! "sweet ride" is great, as you would expect - it's
belly, after all. as i mentioned in my last post (replying to e) the track
listing is a mixture of b-sides and hits, so we get "feed the tree" and "now
they'll sleep" alongside "thief" and "broken" and "spaceman". at least they
have the good grace to provide slightly different versions of the album tracks
where possible; for instance, "dusted" is performed live, we get "judas mon
coeur" instead of "judas my heart", and "gepetto", "feed the tree" and
"seal my
fate" are single or radio remixes. there's one previously unreleased
track, "lilith", but frankly you can tell why it's not been released before -
it's really not that great, by the standards of belly b-sides at least. i've
heard a lot of the b-sides as my friend dom is a big big fan, and i have a few
singles myself, and i would have preferred more of them and less of the album
material; for the life of me i can't understand why "john dark" isn't on
there,
and "baby's arm" would have been fun too. but you do get "thief" and "hot
burrito #1" and "sweet ride" so i shouldn't complain too much.

"And Cocteau Twins! I adore them!"

what a great voice liz fraser has. wow.

off to do some work ("work? on a saturday? you're back'ards you are")

It's probably a little late, but I wanted to jump in and add a few comments
to the thread about art:

> every person has a different conatation of the same word. the same could be
> said for colors, or images, but to a lesser degree, i think.

So true. And because of this "loadedness" words can lead people off track.
You say sin, and that person's thinking Garden of Eden and serpents and
hell's fire, and I'm thinking cheesecake, and a different person thinks of
the awesome blowjob he got from a hooker last night. As you said, these are
all very different connotations. But then maybe these different experiences
of words could give a piece new depth, depending upon the artist's
intentions.

In a similar vein, I saw the movie "13 Conversations About One Thing" a
couple of weeks ago, and everybody I went with came out with a different
interpretation of the movie, depending upon the character they identified
with. Anyone else who's seen it have this experience?

The most fundamental element of art, I think, is the relationship that is
formed between the viewer/listener/reader in is her or her interaction and
interpretation of a piece. My personal interaction with a work can sometimes
be cut short by reading a review or critique in advance. The interpretor,
who I trust because maybe they use a few technical terms or have a Ph.D.
behind their name, becomes a sort of gatekeeper. A professor or critic or
even the artist him/herself can stand between me and the artwork. Everything
I see in the painting or film is framed by that person's interpretation, and
so my personal relationship with the piece is stifled. Some people are
better than others at filtering out those opinions, so I think this is
something that happens in degrees.

That said, once I've been able to form my opinions and related to a piece in
whatever way I can, I love to hear from the artist and from others who have
experienced the artwork. I think that this is where art can work on a
different level, where you use your experience of it and discuss it with
other people. For example, I have formed a kind of relationship with Tori's
music and I have my opinions about it, and so I come to this list and maybe
I can form relationships with people who have also experienced this art.
Some people may bring ideas to the table that hadn't occurred to me before
and they may alter the way I feel about tori's music over time, but at least
I had that initial experience on my own.

When I first heard Tori's cover of "Time" (I'm embarrassed to admit I had
never heard Tom Waits' version before then), I had a very different
interpretation of the song than maybe what was intended. Perhaps because of
the way Tori emphasized particular words, I heard it as it's *time* that you
loved, as in the person in the song feels time running out and cleaves to
it. But in the song, there are images of death, of mortality, and so I see
that idea running parallel with the more obvious translation of it's about
time that you *loved.* Maybe both work, but I might never have explored the
route that my ears pointed me to if I had heard Tori or Tom Waits talk about
someone who needed to learn to love himself. Is this all just crazy talk?

Whew! I'm off for a while, but feel another post coming on soon.

Later alligators,
Rebeccca

Posting again. I'm afraid I might have 2 posts pop up in one digest. How
embarrassing. I promise once I have a job again (hopefully soon), I won't
be harrassing you guys so much.

I saw Lovely and Amazing last night, and it may just be one of the best
chick flicks I have ever seen--which was good because two of my best
girlfriends were visiting and we snuck in a tiny bottle of Bailey's and
passed it back and forth during the movie like high school kids. But
really, it was good.

And in a few hours, I'll be going to see The Shins for only $8.
Unfortunately, although I've heard some wonderful things about them, I find
their album a bit bland, so I'm hoping that seeing them live might give me
an entry way into the album.

Gosh, I miss those times when you just have fun writing, and time flies
without the minutes punctuating the writer's block shrouding the word that
would be perfect here but it's just beyond the horizon of your memory. When
I was in junior high and high school, I could just let the flood gates open
and out would flow a story or a poem. That all changed in college for some
reason. I feel a need to do it, of course, but it seems like I'm always
agonizing over word choice or struggling against triteness of some sort. I
don't know if it was writing for the newspaper at school or the prospect of
doing it for the rest of my life as a job, in the most stylized way, but
something has definitely changed for me.

In an unrelated post, Mark gave us some CD care tips. Here's mine: Keep
CDs away from lettuce! (not that this would even be an issue for most of
you) I've never ruined a disk myself, but my old roommate used to bring CDs
to listen to while she worked at Subway, and somehow or other, (crazy
sandwich artists that they are), lettuce would end up on her CDs and they'd
inevitably start skipping (even after the lettuce was removed, of course).

Also, I was wondering if anyonce could recommend a good book of Norse
mythology?

Thanks,
Rebecca

But I do know when I'll be back again. This will be my last post before my
Canadian and US domination tour of 2002 and it'll be about 6 weeks before I
say anything, as it takes about a week to read these things after deleting
all the spam.

A few weeks ago I kept getting calls from my travel agent who was bordering
one rude, accusing me of double booking with another agency. Like I'd book
two tickets for myself on the same day! One is expensive enough. This
happened a few times, but eventually the story came out that there is
another Brian Cooper flying to LA the same day as me. I hope he's flying
business class so I can turn up early and get his seat. LA - look out - one
is bad enough.

I've actually met a Brian Cooper over the years. I've also received mail
for another and phone calls for yet another Brian Cooper. Accept no
substitutes, I am the real Brian Cooper. There can be only one.

Random brief replies... Estraven in #1685:
>(2) Abused discs. Don't use them for teething rings, dog toys,
>Frisbees, drink coasters, ashtrays, skeet targets, or flyswatters

Yes, there's no need to do that with your music CDs... that's what AOL CDs
are for!

Bethey reminded me of one thing I really meant to say during the Napster
debate. What if you were a painter, barely making a living on your
creations only to find all your works have been made into prints that are
sold for $20 each and you don't get a cent for it. Or try being a writer,
only to see your book that you'd been slaving over for years serialized in
a national newspaper without your permission and before you could find a
publisher? What makes it different for musicians? Nothing, except their
works are easily copied.

Matt asked about an arab strap. Yes, it is a sort of a strap arabs use.
It's a strap on dildo used for double vaginal penetration or simultaneous
vaginal/anal penetration, which is why this quote from you was so amusing:
>"i just bought "the boy with the arab strap" and it's really growing on me"

On that note, I should leave.

hello my fellow travellers of the gamma ray

I'm all for words included in paintings. My art teacher at school was a real
bitch that proclaimed that if you include any words in a painting, it
becomes a poster and it shouldn't be done. Needless to say, she was a real
stupid viper.

Why would letters, or words be prohibited in the visual world, if they are
symbols per excellence?? And it'd be real fucked of me to take my teacher's
advice, if my goal in life is to create comic books.

Juan talked about Mexico, our new president and the latter visit of Mister
Very Old Potato. Then Simon asked if Fox is actually better than his
predecessors. I must say he is worse. Much worse.

Let me explain the situation very rapidly. Mexico did have a period of 75
years with presidents from only one political party ( Mexico has
approxiatley seven political parties whoc ontend in presidential elections,
and most of them are center-based, with slight devations towards either side
of the political espectrum, but mostly they are unrecognizable from their
agendas. You might say there is a system, period. And a very fucked up
system at that. Mexico is governed from corruption, in every sense. You can
find it from the most simple to the most crucial event in everyday life. And
everyone is guilty for maintaining this system.
It was a great thing that a president was elected from another party in
2000, but slowly we are beginning to recognize the failure of democracy in
Mexico. Fox won the elections thanks to a huge publicity campaign. He
painted himself as a normal guy, who was close to the people and who had the
guts to change things in Mexico. As it shows, people believed this crap and
everyone wanted to get the old PRI out of the race. It only took Fox a day
of being president to show us how wrong we had been.
His first act as president of Mexico was to attend mass at the Basilica de
Guadalupe ( mexico's matron is the Virgin of Guadalupe ), and afterwards
took his oath at the senate. This was preposterous for mexican history as
one of the things we are more proud of is the separation of church-state in
1887. Now that the Pope was here, he did it again kissing the Pope's ring,
kneeling infront of him.
It's not only that Fox is breaking the law by being openly catholic ( i
mean, he has the liberty to have whatever beliefs he wants, but before that,
he must be president of mexico, and the constitution clearly states that no
president, or any member of the federal government, can attend religious
ceremonies as public servers. This is precisely to insure the state's
separation from any religion, and respect the religious as cultural
diversity of our country) ( check the irony out: the Pope came over, near to
death just to canonize an indian whose existence is not even sure. yay, we
have an indian saint. talk about diversity ) but it's also clear that he0s
using his position to revel in his personal desires. For one thing, there's
a ridiculous soap opera going on with him and his "wife", who he hasn't been
able to marry because they're both divorced and the church won't give them
permission, so they had their private talk with the pope concerning that,
and for one thing, I, as an atheist, do feel abused and a little bit scared
that my president is openly catholic and a fanatic at that. Next time I
write I could probably be doing it from my cross at the top of a hill.

Not to mention he's completely useless in any area. His staff is the most
ridiculous compilation of high execs playing at running a country, and
they're all rookie idiots. So yeah, we have a terrible president and a
country which doesnt work. And at the rate at which Fox is giving out the
country ( especially to Bush ), in a year or too we'll probably be the 51st
state. At least Tori will play here in the end, I mean we would be the
country's biggest state capital, scoring up an impressive 23 million
people!!

As for Matt's question on Minority report: remember that the Precogs' vision
of Anderton killing Leo Crow was a hoax, they did not see it, it was
manufactured by Burguess, and thus, trying to make Anderton create his own
future, a brilliant comment on how much free will we really have.

I really liked this movie. It did have a couple of Hollywood moments (
especially the ending ) but it was so amazing. Visually, I dont think no one
can doubt Spielberg's craftsmanship. The story was good, a bit predictable,
but funny and fast-paced. Tom Cruise delivered another credible performance,
and what about all those Clockwork Orange allusions??

And my top five albums ( however cliched they are ):
1) The Wall - Pink Floyd
2) Under the Pink - Tori

Subject: get me away from here, I'm dying!

hello my fellow travellers of the gamma ray

3) The Fragile - NIN
4) Little Plastic Castle - Ani DiFranco
5) I have a bit of a problem with this one, as it fluctuates between August
and Everything After - Counting Crows, When the Pawn... - Fiona Apple,
Vespertine - Bjork, Boy with the Arab Strap- Belle&Sebastian, Ten- Pearl Jam
