"Subject: original SLG songs"
I adore Depeche Mode, so I obviously really like their
original version of Enjoy the Silence. For me,
though, it's like comparing apples and oranges when it
comes to a lot of these original songs and Tori's
remakes. She really did, in my opinion, *remake* most
of them, which I suppose was what she was trying to
do. Enjoy the Silence sounds very maternal when she
sings it-- you just picture her holding her little
girl as she sings it. The original version has none
of that, but I think that it's a great song in its own
way.
Oh, and I'd never heard the Tom Waits version of Time
before Tori sang it, but I like the song as he sings
it as well. Then again, that was my favorite song on
SLG, so maybe that's not entirely surprising. But
yeah, try to see if that one grows on you. It
definitely won me over.
AND WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH THE NYC CONCERT??!?
Put the tickets on sale, PLEASE! It's making me all
nervous.

That's not a good look. Basically, I think a beard and a mustache are a
package deal. You should have both or neither.
The mustache without the beard looks very "it's the early 1970s and I want
people to know I'm hip, but I want to make sure they know I'm not a
hippie." (this is why people in New Wave bands had no facial hair at all,
so as not to be confused with the above, *or* with hippies.) The beard
without the mustache just looks kinda creepy.

Those are the ones you have to watch out for.

That was *my* first thought when I saw the picture.
Much much rain today, they say.
As for Strange Little Girls, I made a tape (which I labeled "Crazy Paving")
which leaves out "Heart of Gold" and "Happiness is a Warm Gun". It starts
with "Strange Little Girl" and goes on from there, with the two exceptions
I mentioned above, then at the end it circles back to the beginning again.
Oh, and I left off "I'm Not in Love," too. I play it quite often.
The issue to me isn't so much whether Tori's version is better than the
original or not, it's whether I liked the song in the first place. Since
she was picking the songs for reasons other than "oooh, that's a great
song," some of them aren't that great, and re-interpreting them may have
served her overall purpose, but it didn't make them any more enjoyable as
individual songs.
There's pretty much no hope of making "I'm Not in Love" anything other than
what it is, for example.
On the other hand, as usual, when she takes a *good* song, she can bring
out aspects of it that weren't clear before. For example, her version of
"I Don't Like Mondays" makes the original (which I loved at the time) sound
very overdone and melodramatic.
I still like Tom Waits' version of "Time" a little better, though Tori's is
really good.
As B/4,
John

Subject: new video
I just saw the new Tori video, A Sorta Fairytale (yeah yeah, I know I'm
supposed to remain a Scarlet's Walk virgin, but when else am I going to
have the chance to see the video? Mtv's too much of a money grubbing whore
to play anything good) and I dunno what to say.
Upon seeing it, I was overcome with the urge to laugh hysterically until my
throat stopped working. Legs! Tori! Hands! Man! Not very enthusiastic
computer animation!
I get the point of it. The 'love makes you complete' thing, but the video
was made in such a way that I couldn't really take any underlying message
seriously.
Concerning the song itself, I'm not instantly in love with it, but neither
was I in love with Bliss or Spark either. She always seems to pick the
songs that I don't like to make singles of. Huh. And let's not even get
started on Strange Little Girl.
Feet. Head. Tori. Hippity Hop. Roman nose guy who may or may not be
significant other. I just feel that the video could have been made so much
better. And without the anvil metaphors that I'm growing so familiar with
as a regular watcher of Buffy. ..Sigh...

Subject: Pathways
Humans as well as many advanced mammals have this capacity to from mental
pathways. We are programmed such that a specific sound automatically
creates an emotional response. A pathway is created between the emotional
part of the brain and the part that processes sound. A mother will
automatically have an emotional response to her baby crying. Even when her
baby is part of a group of other babies, she will be able recognize her baby
's cry over all the others and respond to her babies crying. I have
developed a strong emotional pathway to my wife's voice. These pathways are
a part of our everyday lives.
I suspect somewhere in our primeval past, our ancestors developed methods to
create emotional pathways by "song". Other animals do this all the time and
it is known as mating calls. Early humans must have had mating calls. The
"song" used by our ancestors conveyed the whole personality of the
transmitter and attracted mates of similar personalities. These "songs"
could be overwhelming as testified by the travelers on the Rhine River at
the Lorilac and Ulysses and the Sirens. I suspect that as the vocal
language was developed in recent times, the skill to generate these
all-powerful "songs" got lost.
Or were they lost?
In March of 92 I was switching channels and hit MTV. Within a 10-second
exposure to SATY, an intense emotional pathway was formed. A week later I
had that wondrous irrational moment and purchase the LE tape. The first
time through LE, only SALT had any response but within a few weeks pathways
were formed for Winter, Happy Phantom, and Mother. 10 years later these
Pathways have not gone away. However, no intense pathways were formed with
the rest of the songs on LE for me. Some could be classified as a nice
sound while others I never listen to or care to. The formation of pathways
even on the same recording is a very personal thing and varies radically
from person to person. The power of Tori is her ability to form intense
pathways with her music. SATY formed the most intense pathway of any song
in my life. For 10 years she keeps generating new music and generating new
pathways. As part of the deal the listeners also develop an intense pathway
toward Tori personally as testified by the crowds waiting for her before
each show.
There must be some secret science as to how much exposure is required to
form pathways. Someone must have figured out how many times a listener must
be exposed to a song before a pathway is formed. Videos use visuals to
reinforce the pathways. Some songs create pathways almost immediately while
others take several exposures (grow on you). Artists have complained that
media critics listen to an album only once and write their review. There
was not enough exposure to form pathways. Tori has the disadvantage that
she gets little airplay and radio does little in generating new fans.
Management for artists fight for airplay so that pathways can be formed.
These pathways behave somewhat like the human sex act. With overuse the
listener become first disinterested and then downright irritated. On my LE
tape the pathway for SALY would never go away but the overrun into Precious
Things became downright irritating. There seems to be some sort of quota
system on the usage of these pathways. However, after reaching the point of
irritation the listener quits listening to the song but there seems to be a
residual pathway and can be reactivated in the future. However, irritation
(saturation) is reach quickly the second time around. Every recording
artist reaches the point where all of their music is at the disinterest
state and they cannot generate new pathways. Their careers are done.
The whole recording marketing business is based on forming pathways. Radio
stations, MTV, VH1 all exist to offer "free" music and but their real
purpose is to form pathways. If the pathway is intense enough the record
companies hope that the listener will go through that wondrous irrational
moment and purchase the recording. Recording artist are required to tour
and along with making money the recording companies want the pathways
intensified and expanded so that more recordings are sold. Access to free
MP3's and methods to duplicate CD's to satisfy these pathways drives the
recording companies up the wall as well.
My favorite pastime is my visit to the Barnes and Noble record department.
I listen to their selection of CD's and visit with my friends there. Each
demo site has a little description of the artist and the album to buy on the
spot. They are there for no other reason than to form pathways. Being
cheap I fight off these pathways by listening to the recording to
disinterest. For most of the recordings, this does not take long. Once in
a blue moon I lose and suddenly undergo that wondrous irrational moment and
scare the manager Kandi and actually purchase something. Last week it was
Maia Sharp. This is another one of those Sunset Strip girls such as Tori
and Joni. Her song Lightening sounds so much like Joni Mitchell that I
swear Joni is singing it. Pathways are now being formed now for the other
songs on the album.
Residual pathways are a big business. 50 and 60's era stations are in each
city. The whole album rock stations have been playing the same stuff since
the 70's and will be as long as the baby boomers are still in economical
power. (20 years from now it will be on the AM dial and heard coming from
nursing home rooms. People will be crocking to the Doors.) They activate
residual pathways and give a moment of joy. They do not want to overexpose
a song. The last thing they want is irritation. Tori has been successful
at changing the arrangement of a song already at the disinterest level and
bread new life into it.
As you can see, there are rational reasons for the irrational behavior we
all undergo for Tori. Tori has gotten rich from those wondrous moments of
irrationality when we reach for our wallet. In the 70's recording artist
replaced movie stars in Beverly Hills for these rational reasons and these
artist are still making money on residual pathways. Thousands of artists
are hoping to find the formula for making pathways and only dream of Tori's
success.
Have to end.

Footnotes:
Got a photo of my granddaughter yesterday at -6 months. Next March I am
getting something I dreamed about for years.
Also getting my ticket to the Columbus concert. If anyone else from RDT is
going to be there, let me know. These pathways are still intense and
driving me to spend a weekend in Columbus.

I was in a record store yesterday and naturally, I started looking for Tori
stuff. I found the Glory of the '80s single and since I didn't have it, I
bought it. The only thing is, the second and third songs should be baker
baker and winter, only instead, it is Famous Blue Raincoat and Twinkle.
Those are from the Concertina Single, which I have. Is that weird or what?
