Subject: SW thoughts
Just a few things - I am only starting to listen to Scarlet for the lyrics,
but a few things popped out at me.
In "mrs. jesus," the fact that the flute comes in just as she's singing:
and even as I'm climbing up
the stairs I know there's
Heaven there and then
Empty arms that comes
with the Morning Star
... makes me think of "Stairway to Heaven." Not sure if it's a direct
reference or not, but it may as well be an indirect one.
And when she sings "You just lift your lamp" in "Scarlet's Walk" I think of
the Hermit card in the tarot, which was also used in the gatefold of Led
Zeppelin IV
An example of the tarot card:
http://www.aphrodette.com/img/tarot3/pics/hermit.jpg
And a close-up of the album cover shot:
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/2406/hermit.gif
(In the full gatefold, he is high on a rocky peak overlooking a village).
If it is indeed a reference to the Hermit, that would be especially
opportune given the message in that song:
"The Hermit has chosen a solitary spiritual path. He shines light on his
inner self and, by this means, gains wisdom. The Hermit's home is the
natural world and it is by being in tune with that world that he learns the
laws of nature and learn how they operate within himself. His path is a
lonely one as he lives in silence and has for companionship only his own
internal rhythms. But those crossing his path are touched by his light and
wisdom. Though often alone, he manages nevertheless to instruct those who
meet him and guides those who chose to follow him on a path towards
enlightenment." (from
http://occult_symbolism.tripod.com/tarot/trumps/hermit.html)
As an aside, I also noticed Tori sings "Straight on til morning," which is
also the name of a Blues Traveler album. Again, may be an indirect
reference. May also not be a reference at all.

Subject: No sleep till Houston
Well, not no sleep. About three hours, actually.
It turned out to be a kind of mini-vacation, what with throwing money
around like there was no tomorrow (and, after the election, might
actually be the case) and running about in a sort of foggy, ad hoc
mindset, but I actually came out ahead. Stuff-wise, that is.
The intended purposes--an uninterrupted, undistracted listen to
_Scarlet's Walk_ and a trip to IKEA--were all accomplished the first
day. I'll say more about Scarlet below, along with a few replies.
The weather here had been the usual sort of cold, gray, damp, chilly,
yucky mess for the past few weeks, but on the way down (somewhere
between Lone Star and Nacogdoches, IIRC) it cleared up, and I got to
see Houston as it very rarely is: un-smoggy, un-hot, un-humid, and
un-smelly. Well, not very smelly. There was still that pervasive
asphalty odor from the refineries. Just enough to remind the visitor
that this was indeed the Republic of Texas, Land of Oil and Cattle. I
brought my own water, natch; the stuff out of the tap still smelled
like chlorinated dead dog diesel bilge and gummed up my skin and hair
real good. (Since when is water supposed to be pale pink?)
After some nasty surprises at IKEA (where was everything? Oh well, at
least the "Poang" chairs are on sale, I'll get one of those and chunk
that ratty old cat hair magnet of a recliner in the dumpster) I decided
to go downtown to get a good look at Enron.
Downtown was a bizarre, disturbing place, even more so than Dallas
was. Everyone was driving either a Lexus or a Mercedes or a Jaguar or a
BMW. And there were many abandoned skyscrapers, some with whole floors
missing, giving the city a scary post-apocalyptic look. The Enron
"bulk-pack toilet paper towers" were not abandoned, but as I approached
I noted the odor of...raw sewage. Very appropriate, considering what
happened there. I couldn't find the museum. I paid $8 to park for one
hour in a nearby public lot. Ouch.
Uptown a little ways, I stopped in at Fry's. Those of you in Silicon
Valley already know about this (in)famous electronics store-cum-geek
hangout, but this was my first time in one...
Right inside the front door was--are you ready for this?--an oil well.
The real thing. The "Christmas tree" assembly sat in a small roped-off
area right next to the shopping carts and bore a placard stating THIS
IS A WORKING OIL WELL, PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH and an electronic display
listing flow rate (about 1.8 barrels per minute) and the price that day
($33.61/barrel). Only in Texas, I suppose. Inside was the usual sort of
Radio-Shack-gone-berserk, bins full of everything electronic from
motherboards to multimeters, home theater to ham radio, CDs to
capacitors, robot kits and X-Boxes and EPROM blasters and DVDs (movies,
DVD-R, or DVD-RW, take your pick) and hard drives and dishwashers and
oscilloscopes and HDTVs and a Starbucks...no, it's not a Starbucks,
just tastes like one...wait a minute, where's the Jolt? A Fry's without
Jolt? Sacrilege! I walked out of there almost $270 lighter, $120 of
which was Christmas gifts. OUCH!
My final stop was the Space Center, and it was a long way out, almost
halfway to Galveston (or so it seemed). The visitor's center was the
usual sort of disappointing tourist trap, with its most interesting
feature perhaps the visit to Ye Olde Mission Control; amazingly, that
facility was in service from 1958 to 1996. (The present Mission
Control, we were told, was next door.)
And then there was the trip back. It took me two hours to get out of
Houston ("smog alert tomorrow," the info marquees read), and nine more
back to Fayetteville. In the dark, running on No-Doze and adrenalin and
willpower. It was 0430 when I arrived, and freezing cold. But it was
clear.
When I balanced my checkbook I found out I'd spent $560. YEOWCH! I
won't be doing that again for a long time!
As for Tori's latest, I'm impressed. It seems she's gone back to the
days of UTP and BFP, but with a band this time. But is this progress?
Or was she compelled by her new employers to "make some hits this time,
or else you'll end up like Toni Braxton"?
And then there was this truly disturbing missive from Brian Cooper:
> It could also be the case that Tori's new tracks were released by her
> own
> management to generate interest in her upcoming album. They could
> easily
> deny knowledge of it as once something hits the net it can be all over
> the
> world in minutes. Who's to say?
If that's the case, then her own management are acting as agents
provocateurs: make the material available for download, and then punish
people for downloading it (both directly and by 'copy protecting' CDs).
As I've said many times before, 1984 was 18 years ago, and the
"one-world government" of the fundamentalists is probably the global
economy (the significance of which they seem to have missed
completely). Never mind Big Brother. It's his Little Brothers, Sony and
Disney and TWAT and Fox and Viacom and Microsoft, and Exxon Mobil and
GM and McDonald's and all the rest, from whence an Antichrist (or his
functional equivalent) may well come. Remember Enron?
(Note to Koba: Now you might begin to see the significance of that old
railroad case I had you dig up.)
And Tori may now be, for all practical purposes, another Sony factory
worker. Oh well, gotta get Tash's college money somehow...I hope she's
got rid of the TV.
Canada? Try Mars.
Estraven.

Dalsh said: "I think she'd be less upset if sex videos of her and Mark
were posted on the Internet, actually"
I actually wonder about that. Tommy Lee and Pamela were pretty
much furious about it and they don't seem like the kinda people who would
care, if ya think about it.. but then ya know, Tori would prolly be like
"well wait a minute.. lemme have some of the royalties, for pete's sake!"
at the worst. *shrug*
Julie: glad that your Halloween was fun. :) Mine woulda been more fun if
there'd been no classes for me to worry about. lol..
littlebluegirl said: "i got 'your cloud' stuck in my head, and i couldnt
figure out why ... then i sat down and *read* the lyrics and the synopses
that she has said about that song ... and it just cut me in two. I lost
all reason and broke down..."
goodness.. it's a beautiful song, isn't it? I love the chorus
part, frankly. it's.. forgive me for saying it, but if someone else in
the r&b community (like say, Aaliyah--if she were alive) covered "your
cloud".. and released it as a single and so on.. I bet you 5 bucks that
it'd be a number one hit. it just sounds perfect as-is and would, to me,
also sound as perfect as an r&b-style song.. and I dunno whyyyyy.
somebody slap me! lol
she then said: "i just found out that the guy i was recently seeing is
now impersonating me by opening an email account after my 'real' name."
get a baseball bat. find him. beat him with said baseball bat
while playing that Ramones' song "beat on the brat".. try doing it to the
rhythm of that song.. see if that helps solve your little problem.. :D
Lavs said that Shaela was born while Winter was playing.. YAAAAAAAAY!!!!
:) *celebrates* that's always a good thing. :)
welcome to the world of delurk, Jai. :D
a subject in good ol' Coop's email said: "Hit me with your rhythm stick"
um.. no sticks around here. mind if I hit you with this
half-deflated balloon instead? :D
*wap*wap*wap*wap*wap*wap*wap*wap*wap*wap*wap*wap*wap*wap* there. :)
then he said (*wap*wap*wap*): "Seeing the sticker of the licence plate
"TORI A" makes me wonder how many obsessed Toriphiles out there already
have one on their car and how many will appear from now on."
hahah ya know, I actually have to wonder about that myself. :D
wonderful Succubus Barbie Megan said: "Sigh. I really wanted to fall in
love with this album. *sob*"
o_O I love it.. what's your current impression of it now? :)
Megan then said of her mother: "She was talking about how some people
don't raise their kids strict enough and suddenly changed the subject to
how, when I was a baby, people actually went so far as to stop their
cars, open the window, and call out that I was a fat baby."
babies are supposed to be fat. fat is good. goody fat fatty good.
seriously. as long as you're HEALTHY (ya know--no worries about heart
disease.. cholesterol, etc).. it does not MATTER. I'm fat too! maybe not
grossly obese (I, thankfully, have a figure that helps me carry my weight
pretty well.) but still fat, damn it. MY only concert involving losing
weight is because both my grandfathers died of heart-disease related...
um.. things. (dad's dad with a stroke, mom's dad with a massive heart
attack) both my grandmothers are well into their 70's and still going
strong. I have a 50-50 chance with either dying in my 60's, or living to
be at least 80.
anyway.. point is.. Megan.. talk to your mother and ask her
exactly what you're asking us. be blunt if you have to.. either way.. ask
her why in the hell she had to say "oh and when you were a baby, people
blah blah blah". there's really no point in it.. except for maybe she was
thinking "speaking of kids who aren't raised right.. I think those ppl
who called you fat as a baby needed more discipline themselves." that's
all I can think of as far as that goes vs what she was talking about
beforehand.
Megan then said: "Just who goes out of their way to insult an infant?"
cold, heartless, tactless people who don't know any better and
oughta be shot. :) kablooey. :D
littlebluegirl said: "...so i scraped my knees, ripped my jeans, and
scraped my leather coat... the worst part was that i cracked my knee when
i fell, and it was swollen and now its hard to walk... and my wrist is
sore too."
owieeee!!! O_O ouch, ouch, OUCH! sounds painful! ay yi yi..
rofl.. and those poor JEANS too! dang.
welcome back to the list, Belle! :)
Brian to me on SW's length: "It's not just this album that does it to me.
I'll say the same thing about The Eminem Show and just about any album
that goes over 60 minutes."
ah, I see. you're not used to it huh? I always feel like I'm
sucked into another world, generally speaking, when it comes to these
epic albums.. :D it actually scares and frustrates me sometimes. lol
Welcome to the list, Mary! :)
Ade provided Megan and us with an interesting view of beauty standards in
history.. thanks muchly, Ade! :D nowadays, the world prefers to see women
as skinny as that model named Twiggy. (I've never knowingly seen a pic of
her, but apparently she was.. REALLY SKINNY.)
Ade then said: "i'd smile sweetly, talk about how BEAUTIFUL the baby is,
and then proceed to politely insult the other person. "why thank you,
aren't her rolls just darling? oh by the way, your lipstick really makes
your wig look orange. oh, that's not a wig? silly me! it sure looks
like a cheap wig to me! heehee!""
ROFL!!! I wanna see you do that!! HAHAHAH!!
Ade, by the way, just for the sake of knowing--you're not the only 4
footer in the world. Did you know that Prince (the Purple one.) is about
your height? at the most, he's 4'11 or maybe 5 feet *even*.. but he's
short too, and frankly, he's way too hairy for me so I don't find him all
that attractive.. rofl..
Arija said: "p.s. i like tori's harpsichord phase better than her rhodes
phase.
thoughts?"
I love all of Tori's stuff.. totally.. but I really find myself
more drawn to her pre-SLG era. I love it all, like I just said--SLG
included and most definitely SW.. but.. I feel more drawn to say,
Northern Lad, Liquid Diamonds, Hey Jupiter, Icicle, Crucify, and Datura
than I do to the last two albums. That said, my faaaaaavorite on SLG,
hands down, is I'm Not In Love.. can you tell I'm a girl who tends to be
driven by the beat? :D SW.. the ones that tend to stick in my head is
Crazy, your cloud, pancake, I can't see NY, Taxi Ride, and Scarlet's
Walk.
call me crazy for the following if ya wanna, but by the time
Scarlet's Walk comes on.. I'm, quite strangely, thinking of the song
"Special" on Janet Jackson's Velvet Rope album.. (yeah, I admit it--I
went and looked at the tracklisting of the Velvet Rope album to see which
one it was. lol) there's something in the melody that just really trips
me up like that and makes me feel like I've been sucked into another
world. crazyyyyy.
Jim, loved your letter to your paper regarding the election.. it's quite
SCARY to think that there's only one side who has more control than the
other. I don't care if that side is republican or democrat. (I'm a
democrat.) it's just.. it sets the stage for TROUBLE in either case.
either way, let's hope this evens out soon.. o_O;;
welcome back (even if it's only temporary) from lurkdom, Rebecca! :)
um Woj I keep noticing that one of your shortcuts to one of the Tori
lists reads "fiercest clams".. clams? :D explain please? lol.. sorry, I'm
just curious here.. and that just sounds cute to me and I'm just
wondering if it's some inside joke, or what.
Beth on Tori and botox: "so bully for her if it makes her feel better
having her forehead paralyzed."
o_O I like to be able to move things.. I don't think I'd ever get
botox. I ESPECIALLY enjoy being able to wriggle my eyebrows. oh yes. :D
happy bday erivelton :D
Daniel: sounds like one hell of a freaky dream you had there.. yikes..
O_O
Julie: glad that you're not feeling so badly insane about David.. and..
as for your friend basically ditching you.. um.. firstly, how long as she
been at this? if her relationship with her boyfriend is relatively new,
you might want to give her a little more time to get used to him--so to
speak. it isn't right for her to say "yeah we hang out together at
school" ESPECIALLY if you don't see enough of her for it to really
count.. but assuming her bf is a new one for her.. she's just in love,
head over heels, etc.. it happened to me. I didn't ditch my friends of
course, but a lot of things went out the window when I fell in love with
my bf. :D
to Mike about the Atlanta tickets.. well, I don't have any extra tickets,
as I only bought one for myself (me = broke! ACK!) but believe me if I
had an extra one, I'd give it to ya. I hate to see any deprived
Toriphiles. :P
congrats on your report card, Julie! :)
Megan, love your "buy myself" poem.. very very nice.. :)
Brad said: "It's an all new and better world for all you poor lost souls
who have been indoctrinated by liberal schools for all these years."
I hope you're right but so far, it doesn't look that way. BALANCE
is the keyyyyyy, people!!
Lavs: people trying to tell you 8 pounds is big? I was 9 pounds and 23
and a half inches long at birth. :D
NuttyBakerGirl explained the "Bowling for Columbine" satire bit to me..
thanks. I definitely wanna check it out. :D
Woj posted an article in which Tori said: "...I say if you really can't
afford it, then you should be able to have it for free. But if all you're
doing is taking and taking and not giving anything back, then all you are
is a taker. I mean, you're not writing this story for free, are you,
Nick?"
and let's just say I cracked up momentarily.. rofl.. I love that
girl! rofl!
Julie wrote about music being something that she cannot live without..
you're not the only one! :D I'm a music freak. gotta have it every chance
I can!
YAY to Beth for the good reviews of your play! WHEEE!!
Matt said: "Cyndi (and anyone else who's interested) - my downstairs
neighbour has been unrelenting in his noisiness so I'm seriously thinking
of getting the letting agents involved. Either that, or taking up
Appalachian clog dancing... ;-)"
howzabout Appalachian clog dancing to Tori? :D annnnnnnnnnd to
the fact that YOU HAVE TICKETS TO ONE OF HER SHOWS!!??? :D yeeHAW!
congrats, my man! :)
and on that note, I've been awake for two and a half hours.. it's 2:30 PM

Subject: Virginia
SW has a lot to digest. In some ways, I feel like its 1992 all over
again.
But, I find Virginia to be the most incredible, enchanting, Tori song
ever. At this point, it would be the song I play to introduce new
people to her music.
(So far I'm partial to the 10-26-02 Paris live version, all piano.)
Yet, it doesn't seem to wind up very high on many "favorites" lists
here.
(My "second" SW favorite, would be Pancake, to give an idea of the
type I like. And my overall favorite is Bells for Her.)
