Tori Amos Plays Fragile And Furious At NY Performance
11.15.2002

Tori Amos

NEW YORK ó "It's kind of like a living room," Tori Amos breathed into the
microphone, referring to the intimacy that comes with over 100 of her
diehard fans no more than six feet from her piano.

"So you can see the spitting up close," she added, self-consciously
glancing down at some spray that spewed from the last song, "which is
really embarrassing."

It's too early to know whether that will appear on "Scarlet's Sessions,"
Amos' forthcoming DVD that will contain footage from Thursday's performance
at Sony Music Studios. The DVD, which may also feature an interview and
glimpses from her current tour, is expected to be released early next year.

There aren't many images in music as beautiful as Amos perched at a sleek
black grand piano with her straight, vibrant tresses cascading over her
shoulders. Clad in a pink and brown sheer dress, which billowed when a rare
breeze swept through the studio, she reflected the delicate majesty of a
rose as she delivered 20 selections from her decade-long career, spanning
from her 1992 debut, Little Earthquakes, to her latest album, Scarlet's
Walk, released last month (see "Tori Amos Writes Scarlet Letters, Draws
Tour Map"). Surprisingly absent, however, was anything off last year's
covers album, Strange Little Girls.

Flanked by bassist Jon Evans and drummer Matt Chamberlain, whom she often
turned her intense blue eyes toward between songs, Amos led the trio mostly
through Scarlet's Walk songs, through early fan favorites such as "Crucify"
and the signature "Cornflake Girl," which brought familiar joy to both
artist and audience alike.

On the whole the songs teetered between lovelorn fragility and driving
fury, Amos' trademark dichotomy rendered so well on her records. Amos
grooved to her heavy left hand on "Take to the Sky," from 1992's Winter
[#1] EP, while slapping at the keys with her right and fostering a body
rock that consumed much of the audience. There, as well as on "A Sorta
Fairytale" and "Sweet Sangria," among others, she alternated between the
grand piano before her and two upright electric pianos behind her, adding a
dynamic element to the otherwise serene atmosphere.

Amos and her band were set in wintry elegance. Suspended lighting fixtures
dripped with crooked white shards resembling icicles and four shimmering
silver drapes hung lazily in the corners. Images of Americana that evoke
the travelogue vibe of Scarlet's Walk were intermittently projected on screens.

During technical stoppages, she engaged the audience in capricious banter
about, among other things, the 17 granola bars she had stashed in her bag,
eating sushi after the show, and ruminations that arose while reapplying
her make-up about how some boys could look cute in lipstick ó or "lippy,"
as she referred to it.

The nearly two-and-a-half hour set was close to seamless, save the
revisions of "Pancake" and "A Sorta Fairytale," which actually sounded
better the first time around. "Scarlet's Sessions" should do well to
capture Amos' live performances, which, for those who have never
experienced a show, are routinely rousing, lovely and deft no matter the
setting or set list.

"Scarlet's Sessions" set list:

     * "Wampum Prayer"
     * "A Sorta Fairytale"
     * "Take to the Sky"
     * "Pancake"
     * "Cornflake Girl"
     * "Mrs. Jesus"
     * "Crucify"
     * "Wednesday"
     * "China"
     * "Cooling"
     * "Leather"
     * "Strange"
     * "Amber Waves"
     * "Sweet Sangria"
     * "Bliss"
     * "I Can't See New York"
     * "Spring Haze"

       ENCORE:
     * "Taxi Ride"
     * "Tear in Your Hand"
     * "Hey Jupiter"

Subject: wheeeeeeee!!!! (gonads and strife, gonads and strife..)

        heh heh heh! :D I woke up at 12:00 today.. lol.. I gotta stop
messing up my schedule when I don't have school..

Beth said: "As an aside, I also noticed Tori sings "Straight on til
morning," which is also the name of a Blues Traveler album. Again, may be
an indirect reference. May also not be a reference at all."
        Peter Pan, Blues Traveler.. Blue Peter Traveler Pan? :D
Everybody's already grilled you about that reference prolly having to do
with Peter Pan and Neverland so I'm just being silly right here. :D

Deadra warned us: "I'm warning you guys to never order from ArtistDirect.
 I pre-ordered 3 Limited Edition Scarlet's Walk like 2 months ago and I
still haven't received them yet!"
        are you sure they're not just sluggish procrastinators like
meeeeee? :D

Estraven took a long car trip.. and said of the reason: "The intended
purposes--an uninterrupted, undistracted listen to _Scarlet's Walk_ and a
trip to IKEA--were all accomplished the first day."
        IKEA? o_O IKEA as in the stuff that Jack in Fight Club filled his
condo up with? as in "we used to read pornography, now it was the horchow
collection"? o_O;;;

Estraven then said of the new album: "...But is this progress? Or was she
compelled by her new employers to "make some hits this time, or else
you'll end up like Toni Braxton"?"
        er.. like Toni Braxton? what happened to HER?

Reed said: "SW has a lot to digest. In some ways, I feel like its 1992
all over again."
        in 1992, I was 11 years old and being your typical 5th/6th
grader.. o_O but I sure wish I'd discovered Tori THEN! :P

hey Arija, was that movie "The Ring" any good?

Julie said of her "friend": "there's nothing wrong with seeing your
boyfriend a lot after school, but to say that EVERY SINGLE FUCKING DAY,
that's just way too much!"
        sounds like she's not really worth your time then.. lol.. if I
were her, I'd tell my bf to wait for a while.. I value my FRIENDS first..
but that's probably because I'm a girl who doesn't *need* a man to be
happy--I need my friends for that. :D

John said: "There are times when I think that making "Strange Little
Girls" reconnected Tori with songcraft and comprehensible lyrics, at
least a little bit."
        hmm, interesting thoughts there.. verrrrry interesting.. ^^ Tori
did say in an interview sometime in early October that by the time she
released SLG, she was really starting to feel stifled by Atlantic
Records.. because as she put it (totally paraphrased) she'd released LE..
and then UTP and with UTP they went "hey, where's your 2nd Crucify??" and
then with BFP they went "hey now.. where's your 2nd Bells For Her??" and
with FTCH they went "WHERE's your 2nd Hey Jupiter??" and so on to the
point where (as she puts it) by SLG she was like "okay, screw this.
HERE'S EMINEM!"

John then said: "..Since I'm doing cutups again.."
        what are cutups..??

Brian and others are talking a bit about CNNNN.. is there an official
website for this? *curious*

Brian to me on my attacking him with a half-deflated balloon: "As long as
I can suck the last of the helium out of it to do Donald Duck
impersonations, I don't mind."
        yay!! *wap*wap*wap*wap*wap*wap*wap*wap*wap*wap*wap* ... wait.
this one doesn't have any helium in it.. lol..

Coops then said: "After that, I can think of another thing to do with
that particular latex item."
        well you ain't doin' it to me! :P

Coops then said after I said I hadn't gotten dressed yet: "Do you mean to
say you're completely naked? Cover up you shameless hussy, you're in
public!"
        no.. I mean I haven't changed out of my pajamas into my clothes
for the day.. o_O hahah hey if someone paid you a dollar, would you walk
around naked in public?? I wouldn't. lol

Lavs asked: "A 12 pound baby sounds very big, but is it obese or has it
just a serious kick-start to life?"
        I think it's the latter. plenty of insulation for one thing.. :D
plus... the fat babies don't die first in a famine. :)

Happy belated bday, Guinnevere! :)

I just looked at the Elementori section of Lav's page.. and.. my lyric
list in FTCH seriously looks incomplete.. anybody know where I can look
online at the complete list of the songs in the order that Lavs was
talking about on that page??

Simon said in reply to Jessica's dad's "whiny bitch" comment on Tori:
"your dad is a most brazen heathen."
        what does that make MY dad if he thinks Tori's practically the
ugliest woman he's ever seen? o_O;; (I think that makes him blind.. :D)

Simon said, then.. "Pepsi is used to clean the paint on large ships, and
more recently, it has been determined that the manufacture of Pepsi
violates arms control treaties banning chemical and biological weapons."
        and if it's blue, it's quite yummy. :D they need to make blue
coke. :D

Simon then said of my halloween outfit: "Sonic for Halloween. I should
have guessed ;)"
        pfft, yeah! he's BLUE. :D

Simon then joked (I like jokes. :)): "Of course, there are also EWWs, and
according to Cyndi, some who are an Ear with Feet ;)"
        damn right! :D I like uniqueness. :D

from Simon again: "I agree with what daniel and cyndi were saying about
TVAB. the rendition of "Sugar" on that CD is really cool."
        and ya know what? I only actually BOUGHT TVAB last Thursday.. I'd
had it on burned CD.. and the version of Sugar on the burned CD was just
Tori and her piano.. and some fans screaming in between.. *shakes head*
so when I popped the real TVAB in and heard the REAL Sugar.. I freaked!
in the middle of the computer lab that I was in (listened to it on
headphones) I freaked!! it was Tori and her band.. no screaming fans.. I
FREAKED!! it was BEAUTIFUL!!

again from Simon: "I like tori's closing comment in the atlanta
journal-constitution interview :)"
        so do I. I c&p'd that part to my bf and he laughed.. he liked it
too. :D

Deadra asked: "Is it just me or does Your Cloud sound a little like
Spring Haze?"
        the only similarity I can see is that they sound like they're
sung in the same key of each other..

Daniel made lots of good points about Christina Aguilera's new album..
but.. "I agree the MTV Video of DIRRTY is sort of tacky"
        SORT OF tacky?? nuh uh.. WAY TOO TACKY. now, I'm all about
vocal/musical maturity, and Christina feeling more bold is all fine with
me.. but her lack of clothes and.. control seriously turns me off. You
make a very good point about Britney Spears and her virginity stance and
then her Slave 4 U video being very sexual, however. In either case, both
of 'em.. Christina AND Britney (even tho I like Britney's wardrobe a lot
better lol) seem to be kinda hypocritical in ways.. *shrug*
        Having said that, though, I have to say that just because you're
a virgin and you're trying to promote waiting-for-marriage, doesn't mean
(to me anyway) that you have to be covered in clothes from the neck down
and not be sexual at all. Many virgins are sexy and are sexual as well,
they *usually* just don't take it too far. That's the key--knowing what
is too much and when to stop. .... Am I making any sense, or have I
created a double-standard argument? o_O

NuttyBakerGirl: that apricot rum chiffon cake sounds nummalicious.. make
one for me? :D *c&ps recipe to mom* yummyyy...

Julie said: "Bye Really Deep Thinkers, at a lot of times you are my only
serenity."
        well gosh. :D that's good! :)

okay, on THAT fluffy note, I've got to go take a shower, clean up, get
dressed (I'm in my pajamas right now, THANKYOUVERYMUCH) and do stuff.

stuff... what a fun thing to do..

cya! :D

Geez, she's not *that* old. :-)"

I wasn't saying she was old. I was just saying that she's been in this
business for 12 years now and has been writing music for many more years than
12. It's not easy to stay on your toes and keep your music and writing fresh.
Many songwriters and literary writers fail at that.

I just wanted to thank the folks who emailed me the
birthday wishes! (Bethey, Beth, Brian, Erivelton,
Fabio, George, Johnny, Deadra, Mel & anyone else I may
have forgotten!) It made turning 34 a lot better!
(Hey, though, age is ALL in the mind....and in my
mind, I'm 27!) Hope everyone is enjoying the new Tori
stuff as much as I am! I did get tickets to the SF
concert - 12/21. I'm debating getting tickets for the
12/20 show (probably via Ebay), but not sure if 1. I
can afford it, and 2. how good the venue is. We got
section 10, row O for the 12/21 show....anyone here
been to the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in SF? Row O
sounds really bad....but not being familiar with this
venue, I'm not sure. When Tori played at the
Paramount in Oakland, all of the seats looked pretty
good- even if you were way up.

I have a road trip starting tomorrow (CA to AZ to TX &
back to CA), so I have to cut it short so I can try to
get some sleep! SW will definitely be on the
playlist!!
**happy**happy**joy**joy**!!
