heh heh heh.. everybody download "Dope Hat". it's really bouncy
and catchy and ouch my head. lol... on with the replies. :)

congrats to Jim on the engagement. YAY!!! :)

Daniel said: "I agree greatly with your statement that if you are a
virgin and promoting marriage, you just don't have to gife up your sexual
nature."
that's how I feel about it, generally speaking. Glad I made sense
with my comment on it. you can be wild and crazy, but #1, know when to
stop, and #2, don't wreck your life by being way TOO wild.

Beth said: "Now I'm thinking of the Statue of Liberty as a big honkin
representation of the Hermit.."
now THAT is a wild idea there.. rofl.. very very interesting. :D

Kahlil said: "i am glad to see several people that i remember from the
olden days, *nodding towards beth, cyndi and andrea*."
I've been here since um... oh.. April of this year.. so I'm still
very much a newbie, I think.. but I like welcoming everybody (newbie and
oldie) to the list. :D

Linda replied to Arija and talked about Tori's progression from pain pain
pain to happiness.. VERY interesting stuff to say. I actually have to
agree with a lot of it. :)

Linda said: "I can't even begin to explain how many times I listened to
Hey Jupiter and Putting the Damage On after the love of my life walked
out the door forever. And then I shaved every place where he'd been.
;-)"
ROFL!! lol.. I didn't see that one coming.. rofl..

Beth, that's quite awesome that Joel still knows who you are by name..
very wild. :)

Beth then said: "Those of you who know how: curse John (Jack) Denofa with
anything you can (preferably something that will make his prick fall
off)."
I would if I could, even tho he did get the guilty verdict. lol
believe me!

Brian and the balloon: "I'm glad you haven't used the word "flaccid" in
any of this."
flaccid. flaccid.. FLACCID!!!!! I have now, and it's ALL YOUR
FAULT!

Brian in reply to my "you aren't doing it to me!" in reference to the
deflated balloon: "You mean you don't want to blow it up again and make
balloon animals? You're no fun! What were you thinking of?"
rofl! no I don't! it was already a sword while it was inflated at
its biggest and I don't wanna do that again! rofl.. I've been
TRAUMATIZED!!!

Brian then said: "And here I was hoping at least you'd be lounging around
in some scanty lingerie at least. Let me guess... your pj's are blue?"
nope to the lingerie bit.. I hate lace.. and I hate silk. :D and
nope to the blue bit.. er.. well the little dogs that are printed on my
pajamas are blue but that's about it.. lol.. I'd like some solid royal
blue-colored jammies tho.. but they CANNOT BE SILK!! lol..
speaking of pajamas and the like.. Hugh Hefner.. being that he is
a man who wears his jammies nearly 24/7.. has anyone ever seen him in a
real bonafide tie-and-suit getup? if you have.. did it look odd to you?
lol..

Brian then said: "I swear I read that as "on with the reptiles"."
hee hee!!! ON WITH THE REPTILES!!! :D

John explained to me what cutups are.. interesting. :) could you perhaps
do that with a RDTRN digest and cut up our comments and replies? :D THAT
is something I wanna see. :)

Julie, good luck with your chance to meet Tori! WHEE!! :)

Jessica said: "cyndi....tell my roommate and i to stop watching G&S! it's
terribly
addictive."
I need that url again, speaking of which.. lol..

Mark said in reply to my question regarding IKEA: "Not having seen _Fight
Club_, I wouldn't know."
ACK!!! GO SEE IT NOW!!! now now now now now now now now!!!!!

As for Toni Braxton.. I know who she is. I just didn't know she was
having legal problems.. hmm.. not good.

Jessica asked what the Darth Vader habit is.. well, watch the Star Wars
movies (the first 3) and listen to Darth's overly breathiness. you'll see
what everyone's talking about then.

Bethany said: "Cyndi axed about IKEA. i think the furniture in Fight Club
was actually a spoof on IKEA, you know, the slightly ridiculous names and
the modern design."
        hmmmm! okay. :) kewl. :D

Megan: who sings "If I Were Gay"??

Ade: that Dildoll was deliciously frightening. rofl..

Gabriel: I loooooved your poem.. LOVED it.. wonderful. :)

and on that note.. ciao! :D

First things first.. the only similarity that I noticed with Happiness is

Lavs said: "Oh, and there was something along the lines of holding back a

um, she said "we both know you could deflate a 7 hurricane" just
for clarification's sake.. that's a funny mental image.. popping a
hurricane with a needle.. har har.. :D

Winterlion's day at the Feast of Immortality concert sounded very very
interesting.. I wonder if I'd have enjoyed it? :)

Andrea said: "oh my. no tori content in this one. it should probably be a

no Tori content.. that's a bad thing? I know it's not a good
thing, but it's a bad thing?? o_O your concert experience sounds QUITE
awesome btw. :)

anyway, thank all of you dear dear people for the birthday wishes, i
have been in the midst of art school insanity mixed together with
various other job related nonsense that has kept me in a perpetual
mode of phreakishness for the past ten weeks.

i do not have the tori cd yet, although i like her single.
i really wanted to see her in atlanta, but alas, the time and money
were just not there.

i just haven't had time to do much of anything, really.

but she's calling to me, a patient little tree, saying, when you're
ready dear, we'll break out the tea and you can have your little
lumps and everything will shape up and become shiny again.

also, in new news, my sig other is moving here next week, he
rocks, sometimes you just win the lottery, and you didn't even know
you were holding a ticket.

etc. etc.

finally reading american gods,
yummy so far,
i want to get coraline, looks like it'll have to be the library though
since i'm flat broke.

yadda yadda

and just the other day
themba(the boy) made me a tree.

so there.

(i am out of my element here in georgia, my birthday had no piles
of leaves, no fall smells, but it's ok, she's just hiding, we'll meet
again)

Walk. wheeeee... :D I won't say much, tho.. I'm just getting this part

To me, Carbon sounds like the spawn of a drunken Juarez (inebriated on,
appropriately, tequila) stumbling over to Mother (feeling bored and
lonely perhaps) and slurring "hey baby, wanna get it on?" (hee hee..
forgive me..) and Mother saying "okay!".. musically, that is. What do you

I saw Elvis the other day as I was leaving work. He was just walking down
the street in his Vegas suit, minding his own business, which was probably
to hit the nearest Mc Donalds for a Cheeseburger.

Going from the surreal to the just plain odd, I see that Veruca Salt
are releasing their "latest" album down here which has been out in the US
for two and a half years now. Liz Phair's last album took six months to be
released. But after years, why bother unless there's another album in the
works and a tour planned, even though everyone's forgotten who they are and
don't recognize the band in its current form?

To the sublime, I'd like to give my congratulations to young Jim on his
engagement and give brownie points for the imagination of his proposal. I
don't think I've heard anything as sweet around here since Scotch's long
distance love affair story.

In #1752, Arija wrote:
>it's true; being at this show in particular reminded me of a time when
>tori's music was REALLY important to me, as in defining parts of myself.
>while i don't feel that way about her anymore, as in i dont depend on tori
>the way i did when i was in high school or in my "formative years"

And they said you were something then... what happened? ;-)

I've always found there's nothing better than a live show to connect, or
reconnect with an artist's work. Seeing her last year gave me a greater
appreciation of some of the songs on SLG, which until then I'd had a little
trouble getting into. While I'm yet to have that experience with SW (and
I'm not expecting it to happen), seeing/hearing songs from a new album by
other artists in the past has reminded me of what I liked about them
originally and opened up new understanding of their current work.

I'm certainly not in the same place emotionally/mentally that I was when I
first heard and came to love Tori's music, but neither is Tori for that
matter and for that I'm glad. As Roxanne states later in the same digest,
people can't keep living in anger for the rest of their lives. It either
eats them alive or stops them growing as people.

While there are songs that fans will always want to hear from earlier
periods in an artist's career, the fans shouldn't be disappointed either if
that artist no longer wishes to play them because of the feelings the songs
resurrect.

Somewhat on the same subject, John wrote:
> And I remember Liz Phair's second album, where it always sounded like
> the curse words were stuck in because they were expected, not because
> they belonged there.

Do you really think so? While I'll agree the use of the "f" word is
overdone, a song like Chopsticks wouldn't work without it and it fits
seamlessly in Supernova. Any profanity is well out of place on her third
album. What was so shocking about Exile In Guyville wasn't the use of
profanity, but the issues Liz raised.

We could also draw parallels between Tori's an Liz's albums if you take
them at a rate of 3 to 1. The original albums were angry and explicit, the
next set more mellow but still could have a cutting edge and to complete
the trilogy, a more polished work but lacking the angst of the beginning of
their careers. Going by this logic, Tori will put out to more albums that
sound very much like SW.

>Secondly, it is also a very good observation that, in general, Tori's
>songs have slowly become more concerned with the outer world than the inner.

Which can also be said of writers, is that in their first book, the main
character is an extension of themselves while in later books they find how
to create characters with less of the author's characteristics.

Lavs informed us in 1753:
>Thankfully Jessica mentioned Ron Jeremy in her post and reminded me I was
>going to mention that he'll be on Rove Live next week... Kinda scary him
>poping up like that. He must be a hit here too.

I've also heard that he's doing a public appearance in Pitt St. mall early
next week. I think Tuesday is the day. Fancy a trip to Sydney to meet your
hero? ;-) How are they going to introduce him on the show? It's not like
they can show some of his best "work".

Hi everyone

Sorry I've been quiet lately; I have something like a dozen unread rdtrns in
my inbox right now and my lack of time combined with a slowly haemhorraging
macula lutea in my right eye are keeping me from reading (and therefore
writing) as often as i would like.

anyway coops wrote (in 1744):

"How about the cricket?"

if i have my dates worked out right, you asked that question even before the
first test. well, given the disgraceful capitulations by england in the
second innings at brisbane and again at adelaide this weekend, i can
honestly say i'm embarrassed. i thought we had a glimmer of a chance this
time around - i mean, we can't bowl for toffee, and why the heck we bothered
taking darren gough with us is beyond me - but i was upbeat, especially
after the first innings at brisbane. my only consolation (albeit very
small) is that we're awful against the best side in the world, so it doesn't
feel quite as terrible as it might.

moving on to safer ground - wanna talk rugby?! ;-)

i saw "magnolia" this weekend. remarkable. and one of those movies which
will continue to get better and better each time i watch it, i think (which
will be often).

continuing the weekend's retail splurge, i bought three new albums: "and she
closed here eyes" by stina nordenstam, "deadringer" by rjd2 and "1 giant
leap" by 1 giant leap. strangely, and despite a glowing recommendation by a
colleague, my first stina nordenstam experience is leaving me rather cold.
i mean, she has the most astonishing, child-like voice, but somehow the
music's just not doing it for me yet. "deadringer" might easily be a dj
shadow album, and in parts it's as good as anything the great man himself
has created. it can't touch "endtroducing" or "the private press" though,
as it's simply not *consistently* good enough. the biggest and most
pleasant surprise is the "1 giant leap" project. i guess world music
purists might dismiss it as yet another pop-world crossover worthy only to
be sneered at. however, i'm an afro-celt sound system admirer and "mali
music" fan, so you'll get none of that down-the-nose stuff from me. 1 giant
leap involves duncan bridgeman and jamie catto (of faithless fame)
collaborating with a shedload of artists as they travel round the world -
everyone from robbie williams and michael stipe to horace andy, baaba maal
and asha bhosle. and the result is an atmospheric collection of songs -
with some particularly great percussion at times - that really work
together, rather than the directionless mish-mash it might so easily have
become. check it out if you get the chance - you can visit
www.1giantleap.tv as a first port of call.

megan's "Totally Sick Joke of the Day" in 1745 is an established schoolyard
classic, one of a series of unforgiveable-but-hilarious "baby jokes" that
did the rounds of my primary school some 15 years ago. it would be
reprehensible of me to repeat any of them here...

simon wrote:

"matt- congrats on the new apartment and the new job."

thanks a lot. i feel like it's going pretty well, despite the fact that in
the four weeks since i started, i still haven't done ANY WORK AT ALL. oh,
and my manager's moving to a new post in january - way to create a stable
settling-in period! however, the feeling of serving the national interest -
and of course the paycheck - make up for these minor drawbacks.

cyndi asked (in 1746):

"What was YOUR first concert experience of Tori like? What happened?"

she sang "me and a gun". i cried. alongside that, my other memories of
nottingham royal centre in 1994 seem very pale indeed - although i remember
loving the combination of "home on the range", "smells like teen spirit" and
"american pie" at the very start of the show. i'm looking forward to more
of the same next january.

yeah i had the same reaction.

"Anyone know who Gemma is?"

no. and what i'm wondering is, who's laura mars, and alfie? probably a ref
erence i should have got, but i'm afraid not - anyone care to enlighten me?

"I'm in the middle of reading _American Gods_"

good for you! is this the first time you've read it? i love that book, i
must read it again some time - but i've decided to re-read "memory, sorrow
and thorn" and i'm only 2/3 into "the dragonbone chair", so i've got quite a
ways to go... ;-)

this has been said by other people before, but i'm beginning to get a little
tired of the full text of articles being posted to the list. nothing
personal woj (and others), but can you just post a link and leave it at
that?

juan (wow, been a while!) wrote (in 1748):

"madonna has perfectly crafted pop tracks which are impeccable for what
they're meant to be."

a fellow brit (steve?) said this many months ago, but i think madonna is
being outdone in this area by none other than kylie - i mean, has there ever
been a catchier pop hook than "can't get you out of my head"?

kahlil, i was on RDT (as was) in 94-95 while i was studying in lancaster - i
don't recall your name i'm afraid, but welcome back.

coops again (in 1750):

"what really annoys me is when people treat the list as their own personal
on-line journal ... I don't need to know if people have cleaned the lint out
of their belly buttons or not that day."

this echoes some of my own feelings recently. i realise i might be stepping
onto unstable ground with what-should-and-what-shouldn't-be-posted comments,
but it's just that i seem to find myself scrolling a lot more in recent
weeks.

andrea wrote (about "strange"):

"most of this song is more coherent and lyrically straightforward than just
about anything else tori's done. the entire album is like that. it's
refreshing."

i tend to agree.

bethey wrote (in 1751):

"I already know our justice system sucks"

as billy bragg wrote: "the judge said, 'this isn't a court of justice son,
this is a court of law'." but it looks like your man got what he deserved,
so maybe there's room for optimism.

whew, that was something of a marathon, but my inbox is now cleared of
digests!. hope this hasn't bored you guys too much.

take care everyone,

Subject: Tori at the Palace

We saw Tori Amos perform at the beautiful Palace Theatre in Columbus, Ohio
last night. It was the best concert I have ever been to!!!

This post will contain a lot of gushing, be warned. Yes, it's mostly because
I am an obsessive fan of Tori (and have been for the past 11 years). But she
really did give
an amazing performance last night.

I saw her in 1999 during her 5 1/2 Weeks tour with Alanis and I was very
disappointed with that concert. Her vocals and piano playing could not be
heard above the band and
she just seemed miserable up there. But last night she was electrifying and
lovely.

The venue was excellent. The Palace Theatre is the type of setting you would
see an opera or a play in. Red velvet curtains, big staircases, intricate
carvings on the
walls and ceilings, box seats, and a huge balcony. I was relieved that
instead of all the glittery fairy
winged teenyboppers that had been on the Venus tour, this tour has attracted
a more mature audience that is
there more for Tori and her music than the faerie goddess image she has.

Howie Day was the opening act and fuck he is delicious. Definitely a pocket
person. Unfortunately it was hard to concentrate on his performance due to
some drunken audience
members. I do wish they would stop serving alcohol at concerts. But he did
very well. He was so
cute and his voice is so much better live than recorded. Especially when he
launched into a verse from
U2's One during one of his own songs. Better than Bono, I tell ya. At one
point he looked up at the box
seats and said 'if I was sitting up there I'd feel like the guys from the
Muppet Show'. *crush*

Tori's part of the concert started with a huge curtain with orange lights
and the leafy haired chick that is on the back of the Scarlet's Walk album
was projected onto the curtain. Tori sang Wampum Prayer from behind the
curtain. It was a great way to excite those of us that were already in our
seats and it calmed down those that were not. I missed Tori's entrance since
everyone stood up before I did. I was a bit slow after being beaten in the
back of the head by the drunk girl in the row behind me. But after that,
everything settled down and it was great.

Tori wore a sparkling silver kimono and a red rose in her hair and she
seemed very happy and relaxed. So much more animated than the last time I
saw her. Motherhood seems to agree with her very much. She danced, she
laughed, she joked, she humped the piano bench and yum when she leaned back
against the piano
and did a slinky belly dance! She was awesome. I can't say for sure since I
have only seen her in concert twice, but I would say both her voice and her
piano playing are better and stronger than ever.

The backdrop to the stage was the same leafy hair chick picture, with the
mountains that are on her website along the bottom. I think this concert had
the best lighting effects I've seen. Except for a few blaring lights when
she hit high notes, the lights mostly complimented her music. A lot of
orange and red and blue and special things for certain songs. Amber Waves
featured green star shaped lights. I Can't See New York had some beautiful
white lights that made clouds appear all over the concert hall, and there
was a very chilling effect of falling down through clouds as she sang the
chorus. Spring Haze was accompanied by white swirls and I think it was Take
to the Sky that had the kaleidoscope lights. Very nice production.

Thanks to The Dent, I have the set list and I'll put it at the end of my
post. It's hard to really pick the highlights of her concert because there
were no weak performances. I do wish she had chatted more, because she's so
adorable and quirky when she talks. But she gave every song her best and it
was all good anyway.

Little Earthquakes was a great surprise and she rocked the house with it.
But I think the best of the best was Cornflake Girl, closely followed by
Wednesday and Precious Things. On all three, her piano playing was
supernatural, as was her voice. All three songs just vibrated off the walls
and the audience went wild. Wednesday is quickly becoming one of my
favourite songs of hers. It's a bouncy rollercoaster of a tune, the kind
that would be good if anyone sang it but is brilliant as Tori does.

Her solo performance of China was so beautiful and heartbreaking that
Brendan said the guy next to him started crying. And Matt Chamberlain really
beat the hell out of his drums on Spacedog. Wow. She did not sing any of my
favourite favourite songs (which are Purple People, Northern Lad, Somewhere
Over the Rainbow, iiieee, Caught a Lite Sneeze & Butterfly), but
I may have fainted from ecstasy if she had so perhaps it is for the best.

I could go on and on....it truly was the best concert of my life so far. It
was not the epiphany that I had hoped it would be for Brendan, but even he
seemed to enjoy. He's a big fan of Wednesday now, and of course he got a
kick out of seeing me smiling and dancing. It was wonderful to share that
experience with him. When I saw Tori in '99, I felt very lonely and longing
and empty. Last night I felt so alive and complete and happy. Possibly the
best night of my life yet.

And now the set list. It and a good review of last night's concert are at:

Subject: a dog with no name

...which is so far the current status of the dog I adopted over the weekend-
a small brown and black mix, looks a little like a corgy (sp?). She was a
stray that my mom found down the road from my place, and after getting her
from the vet after getting treated and cleaned up, my mom brought her to my
place on Saturday. She's adjusting fine, but I need to call her somethig
else besides "hey little dog". :) I've got a few possible names picked
out but I was wondering if you all here might have some input. I'm going
for something sort of unique.

these have a nice ring to them IMHO:

Alice
Allison
Celeste
Holly
Juno
Mercedes
Vega

of course anything is better than "hey you come here" ;)
