So, i got the A Sorta Fairytale single. holy hell, Operation Peter Pan is
like a lost song from Joni Mitchell. i mean, seriously, it sounds like it
could be tacked onto the end of "Ladies of the Canyon" or something. weird.
but i love it. it sounds just like a lullaby.
happy thanksgiving, everyone....
i just strung some christmas lights outside and it made me insanely happy.

there's a rather distinctly Latin sound to this track.. like the video
coulda had some Flamenco dancers in it or something.. that's what comes
to mind for ME anyway. does anybody agree? I love it.. :D

hee hee.. howdy everybody! :) Turkey Day is tomorrow for us..
(Thanksgiving) in the good ol US of A.. fun fun fun and games. right. lol
anyway.. have a good one, everybody and eat lots of pumpkin pie! ON WITH
THE unusually disjointed REPLIES!! :D
Kerri said to us: "thank all of you dear dear people for the birthday
wishes, i have been in the midst of art school insanity mixed together
with various other job related nonsense that has kept me in a perpetual
mode of phreakishness for the past ten weeks."
isn't that the absolute-est most funnest fun in the whole
world??? o_O;; you also mentioned that you recently moved to Georgia..
right? verily kewl. I've been here in GA for the last 11 or so years..
o_O since about a month before my 10th birthday in fact.
Beth said: "Welcome back, Gabriela! I was just thinking of you. :)"
yeah, I second that wb. Welcome back to the RDTRN world! we

walking down the street in his Vegas suit, minding his own business,
which was probably to hit the nearest Mc Donalds for a Cheeseburger."
ay.. he needs to get in shape.. or hire a really good liposuction
surgeon. lol.. :D got a question for ya--do you know who the main 3 ppl
that country music artists are supposed to name when they win an award?
Mama, Jesus, and Elvis. that's who. :D
random thought.. regarding famous ppl.. 99X.. the "new rock" station here
in Atlanta once was like "anybody who's had a relationship with a famous
person or got to meet them or something, call in!" one girl said she got
to meet Flea. she was oh.. well definitely underage at the time, so they
just chatted. one guy claimed that he got to do Liz Phair.. I
wonderrrrr...
Matt explained his lack of replies (along with lack of time): "...with a
slowly haemhorraging macula lutea in my right eye are keeping me from
reading (and therefore writing) as often as i would like."
aaaaaack! not good.. o_O hope that problem can get fixed..
Matt explained his first-time-Tori experience.. lol.. verily kewl.. a
LOTTA ppl reacted strongly to MAAG, so I've understood.. I can't say the
same for myself. my biggest emotional reaction (without crying actually)
was to the Dakota Mix of Hey Jupiter.. but we all already know the story
behind that one, right? :D
Victoria got to see Tori at the Palace Theatre.. WAHOO!! glad it was fun!
:)
Simon, as for your new dog, I like Vega. :) Juno doesn't sound like a
good choice as it's the same name as my email server which is also a very
craptastic ISP. :)

A new chicken take-away has opened up across the road from work. They
proclaim, "fresh, not frozen". What is that supposed to mean? Have they got
a guy out back choking chickens or something? They also have a video
projector that they show on the wall. I've seen them showing Titanic (what
about the nudie bits?), Britney Spears videos (not much difference) and an
Eddie Murphy movie. This is in a public thoroughfare of all places! They
probably don't even have a license to play these movies.
Has AOL taken over ICQ or something? I downloaded Netscape 7 today and it
seemed to be an integral part of it at first glance.
In 1754, Cyndi didst ask...

If you're that rich, why would you bother getting changed? As for if
anyone's actually seen him in real clothes, they've probably been
eliminated. ;-) He's got an image to keep up, even if he can't keep other
things up anymore.
Matt replied:
>"How about the cricket?"

>if i have my dates worked out right, you asked that question even before

I can't even remember now. I think it might have been right at the end of
the first test, but you know how it is with Ashes series, it's over before
it starts. I also have to question why the selectors picked an injured
Gough in the side, but considering how many injuries there have been, he's
probably the healthiest of the lot.
I'm wondering if you heard the news that Matthew Hayden just had a
hemorrhoid operation? Here he is, the best batsman in the world at the
moment had he's had a pain in the arse for months. English bowlers would
argue he is a pain in the arse, but is this maybe the secret ingredient for
success and will England try to emulate it? Makes you wonder what's been up
Warney's arse for all these years.
>moving on to safer ground - wanna talk rugby?! ;-)
Not interesting. ;-) See you next year in the World Cup, matey.
I'm sure most of the people on this list are scratching their heads and
going, "Wha???"
>this echoes some of my own feelings recently. i realise i might be
>stepping onto unstable ground with
>what-should-and-what-shouldn't-be-posted comments, but it's just that i

It's really for people to decide for themselves as to what's appropriate
and what's not, but I do feel with a lot of the stuff that has been posted
recently, in a year, 2 years, 5 years, whatever, the authors are going to
read it and die of embarrassment. Then we'll have another round of
arguments about the accuracy of the archives and people wanting their posts
pulled from there.
I can put up with the reviews, as once the tour is over, they'll dry up,
plus they can actually be a source of comment, something I wish more people
would do around here.
Simon asked about dog names:
>I've got a few possible names picked out but I was wondering if you all
>here might have some input.
Well I don't think Juno or Vega are so bad, but I don't agree with using
people's names as dog names. It just sounds dumb. Years ago, I was
travelling around Nepal with a guy named Rex. He pointed out to me that in
every Gary Larson cartoon that had a dog, the dog's name was Rex. When I
thought about it, I knew he was right. Nobody deserves to go through life
with a dog's name.

i agree with everything here, but what i'm responding to is her vocal
condition on this tour. being a singer myself, i've come to the harsh
realization that only some people are made to sing a certain way. some
people, in this case, are tori and a certain way, is that high belt,
strong head voice, banshee wail that we all adore so much. it's
amazing really, and she should be given a fuckload of credit for doing
that night after night. if i, the inexperienced amateur, were to try
to make it as a vocalist (snort) i'd be confined to the sultry jazz
singer lying across the piano, not the intense, esoteric fiery headed
vixen banging on the thing. reason being, my voice, as does the
majority of women's, i'd wager, gives out after belting for a week
straight, and settles into a comfortable range of under middle c.
that said, last year, on the strange little tour, i wanted to find tori
after the show, give her some hot water with honey and lemon and urge
her to take some vocal rest. i know that a lot of her raspiness is
affected, but it seemed to me that it crept in a whole lot more last
year than it did this year. in fact, i thought she sounded even better
in this respect the second night i saw her. one's vocal chords
naturally begin to sag with age and can't achieve that manner of
stretch that is required to sing and belt really high. take poor joni
mitchell, the hapless 1960s soprano who now does all her songs an
octave down (also contributed to by years of smoking, etc.). i never
saw tori back in her earliest days, but i wonder if her voice has
changed a lot. you can't tell all that much on her albums, but that
sort of sound can be edited in the mastering process, too. have any
tori veterans observed changes like these?
this just made me think of something else. when i went to ben folds
over the summer, there were two groups of people there: those (like me)
who sang along to all the old (ben folds five) stuff he played, and
those who didn't know the old stuff but sang along to his new, solo
stuff (stuff i wasn't familiar with). assuming each album is a
possible entry point to tori, what is the likelihood of one becoming a
fan because of each particular album? sorry, that sentence totally
sucked, here's what i mean. if the first tori album that someone heard
was Scarlet's Walk, do you think it would have the same power to turn
that listener on to tori as Little Earthquakes or Boys for Pele would?
(or any of the others, but you can substitute TVAB and all that follow
for SW, as far as i'm concerned). like if you just heard scarlet's
walk, would you say, wow this woman is amazing, i'm going to run out
and buy all her other stuff too, stuff she did in the 90s?
i'm really curious to know what you all think. so stop reading us your
diaries and holla back.
arija
p.s. on a more personal note, does anyone on this list (who's
comfortable talking about it) have Crohn's disease, or is close to
someone who does? you can email me personally about that if you'd like.

check it out. :) -- Cyndi
here's a Tori survey for everyone. all questions refer to Tori Amos of
course. it's short and fun so give it a try. don't worry.
1. Which is your favourite album? I consider Little Earthquakes a
favorite because it's the first one I ever heard.. but.. the albums (I
cannot pick one!) that I listen to the most frequently are From The
Choirgirl Hotel and To Venus and Back. :D
2. Best album art? um...... prolly FTCH.
3. Best album title? rofl.. don't ask. I can't decide!
4. All time fave tori song? Hey Jupiter Dakota Version for sentimental
value, uh..... currently Raspberry Swirl because it is HARD not to dance
and sing along (loudly) to it. :D
5. Fave song from...
Little Earthquakes? Crucify is definitely one I'd play on repeat.. but
then so is Tear In Your Hand.
Under the Pink? Icicle and The Waitress and Bells For Her
Boys For Pele? uhh.... all of 'em?
>From the Choirgirl Hotel? Black Dove-January, Raspberry Swirl, Liquid
Diamonds and Northern Lad
To Venus and Back? Bliss, Juarez, Concertina, Glory Of The 80's, and
Datura
Strange Little Girls? I'm Not In Love and Happiness Is A Warm Gun
Scarlet's Walk? Your Cloud and I Can't See New York
6. What was your first fave Tori song? the Dakota version of Hey
Jupiter. :)
7. Have you ever named a cat/car/plant after a Tori song? explain. hmm..
not yet. lol.. I have a friend who named his car Datura tho. :)
8. What other things has Tori turned you onto? um, I have to say Howie
Day because he's her opening act right now.

The movie was named "Alfie" and came out in the 60s, starring Michael
Caine. I believe the hit version of the song, from the soundtrack, was
recorded by Dione Warwick (it was a huge hit at the time).

Subject: a few comments about SW
In the late 60's and early 70's my favorite group was Jefferson
Airplane, whose lead vocalist was Grace Slick. The early 80's had
some interesting female vocalists, but I kind of "gave up" on current
rock around the time Heart released `Never'. Then in 1992, while
flipping through radio channels while driving, I heard `Crucify' and
knew it was unlike anything I had ever heard before. LE changed my
perception of music, and replaced "After Bathing at Baxter's" as my
favorite rock album.
`Bells' on UTP essentially became, and still is, my favorite Tori
song. (Did anyone else hear it on "Shickele Mix" in July of this
year? Peter likes it.)
Already having an appreciation for the harpsichord from my classical
music interests, BFP was an interesting step.
I stopped reading the mailing lists just after FTCH came out, and was
relieved that TVAB sounded like music as music, not painful stories
of Tori's life. It seemed that after practically 10 years she had
finally achieved what she set out to LA for.
(I don't yet have SLG as her covers never to seem to have her
personal "magic" in them, but plan to get it soon.)
The only radio formats I listen to consistently to, to find other
enchanting artists, are shows like Echoes, New Directions, PM
Jukebox, Highway 61, Celtic Connections, Thistle and Shamrock, etc.
I found Maire Brennan, who has especially come to life with her
Celtic Christian albums. And next on my list to explore is Happy
Rhodes, who seems to be known to many Tori fans from way back.
So, as for analyzing SW, I've only scratched the surface, and want to
give what I have so far.
First of all, isn't this the only album with a song having the name
of the album itself?
As for my initial comment a few weeks ago about feeling like it was
1992 again, musically the solo piano versions of `Pancake' and
`Virginia' have a `Crucify'-like intensity, and even some tie-in
lyrics:
`Virginia' - "wait for their savior to come"
`Crucify' - "looking for a savior"
`Pancake' - "messiahs need people dying in their name"
More vague:
`Virginia' - "and with a 'goodbye' there she goes"
`Bells' - "and there goes her friend"
The intro to `Pancake' is very similar to BFP's `Blood Roses'.
Also interesting is `Liquid Diamonds' on FTCH while SW has `Carbon'.
(`Carbon' also sounds like what I would call classic Tori, from the
LE - UTP era.)
An interesting issue now is what constitutes the "real" version of a
song. I found that, especially in the case of my two favorites,
`Virginia' and `Pancake' that the various October solo piano versions
are better than the CD versions.
(And I just have heard one of those live `Scarlet Walk' versions on
some radio show during October, while I had my computer apart and
wasn't listening very carefully, as I wasn't aware that Tori even had
a new CD out, until something in the Sony list caught my eye.)
The SW CD does have a "commercial" sound to it. E.g., there aren't
the dynamic jumps like in `Pretty Good Year' on UTP, making it the
first one that can be simply played from start to finish without
"surprises". (Either sonically or emotionally.)
The rock and roll energy in the CD's `Pancake', while very nice unto
itself, is very different than the focus of the Oct 2002 solo piano
live versions.
And as my final comment, I should add that `Operation Peter Pan' is
also one of my favorites from the SW production.

Subject: Alfie
"Alfie" was the theme song for the film by the same name (starring Michael
Caine as -- surprise! -- Alfie). It was written by Burt Bacharach (as all
songs were back then), lyrics by Hal David, and was sung by Dionne Warwick
(as all songs were back then).
When I was 11, I was given a stuffed dog by one of my best friends and I
named him Alfie, after the song. I used to sing it to him all the time.
What's it all about, Alfie?
Is it just for the moment we live?
What's it all about when you sort it out, Alfie?
Are we meant to take more than we give
Blah, blah, blah. There were more than a few occasions when I'd
melodramatically sing to Alfie like he was Romeo and I was Juliet,
showering him with romantic kisses in between lines, practicing for the day
when I had a real boyfriend, and my parents would be secretly watching me
and laughing. I like to think they were laughing at how charming and cute
children can be, but they were probably really laughing at what a little
nimrod I was, slobbering over this sorry saggy dog.
I slept with that dog every single night until I was 19. I couldn't go to
sleep without him. Then, I got married and was packing to move away and on
a split-second whim I decided that I was too old to sleep with a stuffed
animal and tossed him. He was pretty darn bedraggled by then.
The husband was ditched 10 years later, and there have been many times I've
genuinely regretted having thrown Alfie away. I miss that silly old dog.
I still don't know what the hell I was thinking. I must have been high,
because I was extremely sentimental about Alfie and can't imagine why I let
him go. Okay, so stuffing was coming out in a couple of places, but
nobody's perfect.
Now I sleep with a horse named Clyde. Kim is forbidden to touch this
horse, but every now and then I catch him. He always says he's "moving
Clyde" off his side of the bed, but I don't care ... NO ONE BUT ME CAN
TOUCH CLYDE.
Clyde doesn't have a song.
