...but I forgot.
Anyway, I was in a bar on Thanksgiving Eve (the
biggest drinking night of the year), not having a
verygoodtime at all.
THEN, lo and behold, the song changes.... I could
barely hear it over the continuous babble of the
crowd, but then I caught a little bit of music that I
recognized... A Sorta Fairytale!!!
And I shouted, "OH MY GOD, THEY'RE PLAYING TORI AMOS
IN A BAR!!!!!" I yelled pretty loudly, too, but only
a few people around me heard. My friend from high
school apologized for me, and a [cute] guy nearby
said, "Oh, that's okay, it's nice to see a girl get
that excited about anything." Then I bought a shot
called a "redheaded slut" for myself (how apropos).
And then, at the end of the email that never got sent,
I meant to wish you all a happy Thanksgiving. So I
hope all of you, whether you celebrated the holiday or
not, had a nice day.
kiss kiss,
~Linda~

Matt.... you guys invented cricket. Need I remind you test matches are
supposed to go for 5 (five) days?
I started reading Sheri S. Tepper's "The Fresco" the other day and it's
like the return of an old friend. While the basic plot is very similar to
her novels from recent years, it's more like her books pre '95. Before
that, I finished the 6th part of Janny Wurt's "Wars of Light and Shadow".
While I love the overall story, boy she can waffle on.
Bethany declared in #1755...
>man, do you know I've never listened to Liz Phair's second album?
Then just don't jump straight to the third album, you'll get whiplash. I've
heard reports of new material for her fourth album and it's suggested the
songs are prefabricated pop. She has the same producer now as Avril
Levigne. That can't be good.
Gonads and strife Cyndi wrote in #1756:

Are you serious about this? If so, that would really get my eyes rolling.
It must make awards ceremonies really boring if you know what they're going
to say before they open their mouths.
And on the thought of radio stations asking what stars listeners have
bonked, I once heard a woman lay claim to Marilyn Manson, sans makeup.
Arija discussed the banshee wail. Not that I'd know personally, but it's an
art form to be able to do it night after night without doing long term
damage to the vocal cords, or at least to keep it going. It doesn't just
apply to female artists, in that Richard Patrick of Filter can scream his
head off in the studio, but once you put him on the road he can barely get
a squeak out after a few nights. Doing it well is an art form in itself.
>assuming each album is a possible entry point to tori, what is the
>likelihood of one becoming a fan because of each particular album?
Well I've bought every single Tori album and I'm still looking for a
possible entry point into Tori. sorry, I couldn't resist. By my reckoning,
less and less with each album she puts out. I can't imagine taking an
interest in Tori had I heard Scarlet's Walk first.
As much as I hate surveys, since it's so quiet I'll participate in Cyndi's
Tori survey.
1. Which is your favourite album?
It's a toss up between LE and UTP, but I think UTP just takes it.
2. Best album art?
Pele. Pig on a tit anyone?
3. Best album title?
To Venus and Back. Spaced out.
4. All time fave tori song?
Winter.
5. Fave song from...
Little Earthquakes? Winter, with Crucify just behind.
Under the Pink? Pretty Good Year (banshee wail)
Boys For Pele? urrr... Hey Jupiter
From the Choirgirl Hotel? Northern Lad
To Venus and Back? 1000 Oceans
Strange Little Girls? Rattlesnakes
Scarlet's Walk? Your Cloud
6. What was your first fave Tori song? duh! - Winter
7. Have you ever named a cat/car/plant after a Tori song? explain.
No. are you serious?
8. What other things has Tori turned you onto? Beastiality? How about
redheads? Not that I needed turning on to them.
Then Reed made an entrance. Nice post. So what about Heart's "Never" that
turned you off? Was it the manufactured rock/pop sound? While I prefer the
era when they had the gypsy image, I didn't mind the first two "rock
goddess" albums. Unfortunately they went downhill right after that. I did
see them in Seattle in August and they blew my socks off with both the old
and the new, but I think the audience really got off on the old stuff.
Violet sleeps with a stuffed horse named Clyde? Is he a Clydesdale? Be
careful that you don't upset Kim too much or you might wake up one day to
find a horse's head in your bed.

Subject: I love rock 'n' roll
This was supposedly a letter written to Rolling Stone by Joan Jett about
their recent "Women In Rock" issue. While Joan's website denies she wrote
it and that it was written by Maya Price, I just love what it has to say.
Pity it wasn't written by Joan.
---------------
I tried to find some cleverly worded way to express my disgust with your
"Women in Rock" issue, but what i have to say is really quite simple: You
guys are completely retarded.
By RS standards, Rock is no longer a style of music but a trendy costume
to be whipped up by expensive stylists and slapped onto the latest pop
tart barbie doll. Give a girl some tight pants and a spiky bracelet and
POOF!
She ROCKS!
Your poor choice of cover girls and featured artists brings to mind the
Sports Illustrated swimsuit editions. There is nothing necessarily wrong
with the breast-baring models inside..but we all understand that they
have NOTHING TO DO WITH SPORTS--Which just might be offensive to women
who are interested in sports or who might even be (gasp) real athletes.
Yes, Britney has a talented stylist and yes, somebody gave Shakira a Guns &
Roses t-shirt to wear..but they ARE NOT NOW NOR WILL THEY EVER BE ROCK.
Maybe it's naive of me to expect any glimmer of rock'n'roll credibility
OR respect for women from a magazine whose cover shot is regularly a
naked underweight actress. The thing is, I AM a woman musician with a
rock band, and as we all are I am STARVED for any little crumb of
recognition that real women rockers might be thrown. So like a sucker I
find myself short another five bucks ..and pissed enough to write my
first letter to an editor. Avril Lavigne gets some studded accessories
from Hot Topic so now she's "upholding the brazen tradition of teenage
outrage"???!! Are you SERIOUS? And could someone please explain to me why
people keep insisting on referring to PINK as rock? Wasn't she doing the
white girl hip hop thing a minute ago? Yeah, she performed on the
Aerosmith tribute show --big deal..she was on the Janet Jackson tribute
show just before that--Whatever's trendy. WHO CARES. She's a Spice Girl
reject...but I digress.
Jewel and Mandy friggin' Moore have full page features as Rock
Icons...Meanwhile Joan Jett gets one line. ONE LINE. Joan Jett & the
Blackhearts, who have never stopped touring, recently did 10 days in the
Middle East playing for the troops stationed in Afghanistan.
In AFGHANISTAN, Joan would come onstage wearing a birkha, which she
ripped off and stomped on before blazing through the purest and nastiest
rock show ANYWHERE. But even in the RS WOMEN IN ROCK issue, a story like
that gets ONE SENTENCE on the bottom of the last page of Random Notes.
Britney's Rock credentials? Well, she butchers the song "I Love
Rock'n'Roll" on her latest record, and when asked about it the genius
replies "Well, I've always loved Pat Benatar." And SHE is your Rock issue
cover girl?? You should be REALLY embarrassed.
Sleater Kinney was the only rock group listed on the cover..and they got
only half a page. Ashanti, the r&b back up singer who can't seem to do
anything without "featuring Jah Rule," has two pages.
What about the Donnas? The Yeah Yeah Yeahs? The Distillers? A mag like RS
has the power to shine important light on groups like these-- instead
they are afterthoughts, and that valuable spotlight is wasted on the same
overexposed pop princesses WHO HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH ROCK.
In your own letter from the editor you have the hypocritical balls to say
"rock radio won't touch female artists, while the pop factory keeps
churning out soundalike clones, and ambitious musicians with something to
say find themselves left out in the cold."
The pages that follow those words are a blatant display that Rolling
Stone magazine is happily working for the factory now too.
If the issue had been called "Women in Music"..or maybe "Some Cute Girls
with Top 10 Records out Right Now"..I would have no beef with it. Corny
as it may sound, ROCK is something which is still meaningful and even
sacred to some of us. Use the word "rock" in bold letters next to a
picture of Britney Fucking Spears, and you're turning your whole
publication into a joke...and an offensive joke at that.
---------------
Amen! Rock on.
Brian

I think I read that she took steroids on the Plugged Tour, because of the
increased demands of singing with/over the band. I wonder if she's
continued to do so.

Not sure I'd describe Joni as "hapless." It's a fact of life, and she's
carried it off very smoothly, as far as I can tell. I prefer her lower
range anyway, so it's fine with me. As you get older, you can lose the
high heat, but the greats compensate with style and guile.
Aretha Franklin has said that years of smoking actually improved her
voice, and the evidence would tend to support her claim.

These days, you can't really tell anything from albums, as far as voices
go. After all Nat King Cole sounded fine on that song with Natalie Cole,
and he's been dead since 1965.

Um, Little Earthquakes. And Strange Little Girls is close, but not exact
(since the song is "Strange Little Girl").

Very well put.
Meanwhile, I was just saying to Bethany on Thanksgiving, "whatever
happened to Violet?" and here she is.

Spouses and pets come and go. Friends and stuffed animals can go on
forever.
I had a teddy bear named Pooh, and he was also in sorry shape when he was
retired, with all his fur worn off long ago (in fact, I'm only guessing
that he ever had fur, I don't really remember it). My mother would sew
him up when he sprung a leak, usually disguising the patches as items of
clothing.

Subject: Invasion of the Toriphiles
On November 23 I made my trek to Columbus, OH for the Tori concert.
Columbus has been a part of my life since College days. Jean and I both
attended Capital University in Columbus. The last time I was in downtown
Columbus, Eisenhower was President. Columbus is a rather interesting place.
It is the State capital of Ohio and the home of Ohio State University. The
whole city has a one-tract mind, Ohio State football. On this Saturday
undefeated Ohio State was playing Michigan. During the afternoon, the
downtown looked like a scene from the movie "On the Beach" where the entire
humans race was in the final stages of dying off. There was simply no one
to be seen.
However, downtown in its defenseless state was undergoing another phenomena.
In the movie "The Invasion of the Body Snatchers" aliens replaced human
bodies with alien duplicates. Since 1992, a strange phenomenon has taken
place in the world where innocent people's brains are being altered.
Toriphiles look normal to the untrained eye but phases such as "quickest
girl in the frying pan" sends them into ecstasy. They have an uncontrolled
desire gather every year or two to pay homage to their leader and their
driving force is a short red hair lady named Tori Amos. Their messenger is
Mike Way. They gather at a multitude of locations around the world. Each
of these places undergoes the infamous "Invasion of the Toriphiles".
I arrived behind the Palace Theater around 2 PM and about 100 Toriphiles
were present. The Toriphile invasion was in full swing. Tori was about to
appear on a local radio station to promote her album and concert. I, as
many other Toriphiles, live in isolation and frustration, meeting with
another Toriphile is a rare occasion. Surrounded by Toriphiles was heaven
on earth. I meet a pretty lady from Indiana whose son was going to
Pittsburgh to College. There was the engineer from Detroit who designs car
interiors. There was the couple from Ottawa, Canada. There were the two
girls from Dayton, OH and the excited young man from Fox Chapel, PA. As is
the usual custom at these concerts, only a few people actually got to meet
Tori when she arrived. Many were passing items up to the front row for her
to sign. The girl next to me broke into tears when her poster came back
with Tori's autograph. For one brief moment in time, this girl suddenly was
taken out to the faceless masses and the center of Tori's attention. Tori
was no longer just a voice on CD but a real person interacting with her.
This is what each of the people standing there was praying for but Tori only
has so much time and was off to inside the theater in a few minutes.
The concert started at 8 PM and the doors opened at 7 PM. Before the show I
met Richard and Melissa Caldwell. They were the editors of the RDT Fanzine.
This was an excellent publication that really defined the Toriphile
community. For four years they held a Torifest in Columbus. These
gatherings were the high points of my life. I wish Missy and Richard the
best of luck and I hope the Toriphile community appreciates what they have
done for us.
The concert stared at 8:00 PM and Tori was out by 8:40 PM. This is much
sooner than in her previous tours. She never let up to 11:15 PM. Ten years
of my life came past me. These concerts are intense moments in my life. In
the deluxe version of Scarlet's Walk, we are provided with a map of Tori
journeys. Maps are not just pieces of paper, but blueprints of the emotions
we experienced at specific locations. Three years ago I had a visit from a
special girl from England. When Tori sang "Never Seen Blue" during the
concert, I had an intense memory of driving back from DC to Greensburg with
her. We stopped at a Circuit City and she recommended a Tori B-Side CD. We
played it on the way home. So intense was my image of Route 30 near
Bedford, PA, I broke into tears.
The band minus the guitar complimented Tori very well. In previous tours
the guitar dominated the band and Tori's keyboard became a rhythm section.
I had forgotten my earplugs and ran off to the mall before the concert
trying to find a pair. The clerk at the cosmetic department of a department
store gave me some cotton balls. I was in a panic that they would blast my
ears out again this time if I did not have ear protection. As it turned out
the sound level was quick conformable and I did not need them. There was no
hissing of the amplifiers or any grand illusions of area rock. There was
one young lady standing in the center section most of the concert grabbing
the person in front of her. I suspect this was the drunk Virginia talked
about in her post. The drunk moved and after a while and after some voices,
moved again. Also, there is one problem with these 2 hour continuous
sessions, there was a continuous flow of young ladies dashing past me to the
washrooms. They had this look of panic on their faces. All in all, I
enjoyed the concert and the day to no end. Thank you Tori.
When we left the theater, downtown was empty, but a few minutes later around
midnight riots broke out somewhere downtown and buildings were burned down.
This was the result of the after game celebration.
On Sunday I journeyed back to Greensburg. As a final jester to Columbus, I
paid honor to the proletariat and had lunch at White Castle knowing full
well that whatever my wife for supper that night had to be better. Scarlet'
s Walk was back in the radio and on the trip home I returned into the
strange world Tori has created for us.
Have to End.
Jim Mathers jmathers@westol.com
Footnotes:
Last week Jean and I attend a concert by a singing group from Slovenia.
After the concert, I talked to some of the members and these girls were
Toriphiles. I told them I would be seeing Tori this week and they
practically went into tears. They will probably never see her live. This
week, I went to see my stockbroker about some investments, and mentioned
that I saw Tori. Larry got very excited and went into a 30-minute
discussion. He too is suffering the isolation. He just never talked about
being a Toriphile to anyone and was ecstatic to at last come out of the
closet. Good grief, these Toriphiles are all over the place.
At the concert, I gave Joel, Tori's guard, a packet of about 40 of my
articles. (I met Joel in Pittsburgh three years ago.) He promised to take
them back to Tori. I am not sure if Tori is ready for them. I too may have
my chance to come out of the faceless masses.

Subject: Now
Now is an interesting word that we define as the present time. Physically,
now is that infinitely short time period between the past and the future.
For the physicist, atoms are in constant motion and at room temperature they
vibrate at supersonic speeds. The world has changed forever even after a
nanosecond. For us in everyday life we cannot perceive these changes and
the world looks constant. (Also since the reaction time of our brain is
finite, now is really about 1 second long.) The world evolves around now
and is constantly changing. Each morning we read the newspaper to define
what is now in the world. A month ago Tori's new album was in the future
but now has moved through time and now has been redefined. Now we are
listening to the new album and all kinds of pathways are being formed.
In our consciousness, now is much more complicated. Our consciousness
spends only a short amount of time at the physical now. Our conscious now
wonders all through time. I can place my conscious now to when I was 6
months old in a buggy being pushed down the street. I was not happy and the
only way to communicate my emotions was to cry. I can move my conscious now
into the future also. Before the concert I could place it to the Palace
Theater in Columbus, OH.. I could see the people around me and see Tori
coming out onto the stage. I simply drew apron my memories and mental
capacities to simulate the future. I have 61 years of memories to draw
upon. This simulation has been replaced by reality as documented in my
article "The Invasion of the Toriphiles". I can move the move now to
anywhere in the future and past I want. The conscious now is time
invariant.
When we go to sleep at night, our conscious now sort of disappears until the
rapid eye motion starts up and we go into dreams. Then our conscious now is
off to a time not defined by reality. In our imagination our conscious now
is also off into undefined time. It can be in the past where we refine
reality or into the future that only exist in your mind. Such is the power
of the human consciousness.
Our most intimate secret is where and when our consciousness exists. A few
years ago I did an article on "Spock Reincarnated" where man invents a
machine that reads our consciousness and also has access to all of our
memories. Our most intimate secret will be exposed to the world. My
contention is that this machine should never be built even if it stops
crime.
Scarlet's Walk is like a Spock Reincarnated attached to Tori consciousness.
Music is a complex mechanism where the writer can define in intimate detail
their conscious now when the song was composed. In the deluxe version of
Scarlet's Walk, we are provided with an extensive description of Tori's
physical now when the songs were composed. We are given a real road map and
a DVD showing Montana. We are given snap shots of her visit even including
the ladies outhouse. (Does this imply that some of the conscious processing
took place in there?) Joni Mitchell wrote Hejira driving herself across the
US. Maps are more than simply pieces of paper. They are emotions. As I
look at Tori's map I too am going through emotions as I reconstruct my
conscious now as I traveled many of those some roads. In my article on
Columbus, I documented an intense reconstruction of a place on a map. The
next time you travel in a car, try to keep track of when your conscience now
is wondering.
Gold Dust is a hopelessly intimate look at the wondering in time of Tori's
conscious now. "Sights and sounds pull me back down another year. I WAS
HERE". Just as memories are etched in my memory she continues with "I am
freezing that Frame." In the other songs her now wonders off to places,
times, and people that only exist in her mind.
This album creates an entire world for the listener. The first time I
listened to it, it appeared monotone and lifeless. But with exposure, the
entire album has come alive and the pathways are alive with emotions. The
difference between "Strange Girl" and "Scarlet's Walk" is like going from a
nice sound to religion. Where LE and UtP generated instant pathways,
"Scarlet's Walk" takes time to activate the pathways. "Scarlet's Walk" is
also a package deal. The world is spread throughout the entire album.
One purpose of her tour seems to be to open up these pathways to her fans
still in the LE days. Another purpose is to cement the pathways in those
already into the album. Songs from "Strange Girl" seem to be absent from
this tour like a forgotten past. The emphasis is on "Scarlet's Walk". The
message of the tour is "Buy Scarlet's Walk". Don't steal songs from it (MP3
's) because it is a package deal. (Tori has lost millions to her material
wondering off on MP3's.) $20.00 will not kill you! The album is worth it!
(While you are at it, expand your record base with some of my b-sides.) Let
me create worlds for you to escape in to. Be a part of me.
Tori, I am already there, so don't worry.
This is probably as complex a post I ever put on RDT. I hope you understand
what I am talking about.
Have to end.

something like that. Even done a bit of whirling (dervish bit) it's not
that hard. Of course there's a trick to it :)
ask a Dervish - they'll TELL you the trick. If you don't understand, don't
worry....
yah this is a pre-Halloween reply. Oh well couldn't resist :)

AMAZING! Yesterday was just amazing. I went to the Tori concert in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the Riverside place. My brother, my brother's
boyfriend, and I got there at like 2:30 pm or so in the bake of the place
where everyone else was waiting for her. Then an hour later they told us to
go in the front and that it'll be there. We all ran as fast as we could
there. We waited for another hour out in the cold. Then they let us inside
the in between doors and we waited another hour. Then this rude
manager-type dude was yelling at us - saying that when we were running
towards the front door we were being "stampedic" and he also said that there
will be no meeting after the show or whatever. Then he said, "Tori will be
out in a few minutes." After about 10 minutes my brother saw Tori coming, I
looked and there she was...she looked just gorgeous! She came out and
started signing and talking with the 2 people to the left of me. I couldn't
believe it...I touch her shoulder while she was talking with them (not to
get her attention) but just to touch her...then she got to me. I was crying
because I was so happy and I love her...I said in my high squeaky crying
voice, "Hi." and handed her the letter I wrote her and my limited edition
Scarlet's Walk album that she signed "To Julie f Tori Amos"...I told her my
name and she said my name. Then I said in my high crying voice, "I love you
so much." and she said, "Aw!" and hugged me! I was like, "Oh God." and
then she said, "What charm did you get?" I had the dove charm on a necklace
string like I do right now as I type this and said, "I'm wearing it," I
pulled it out of my shirt, "It's a dove." then she said, "I always get the
glass." Then she moved on to my brother and his boyfriend. My brother
said, "Hello Tori." and handed her the limited edition Scarlet's Walk album
and she signed it for him and he gave her a necklace-ring that was very
special to him and he feels and I feel that it belongs with her...it was a
necklace-ring that was somewhat of a symbol for my brother's past love
relationship and he listened to Tori's music with this person and a lot of
the songs were reminded of this person so he thought it belonged with
her...as I do too. Then she moved on. Matthew (my brother's boyfriend)
took some pictures that came out okay.
Later we ate at a restaurant and then went to the show. The show was
brilliant. You all should read the review of The Dent on the Decemember
1st, 2002 Milwaukee, Wisconsin show.
My favorite part of the show was when she performed, "Precious
Things"....but I loved everything.
I have remind myself that I met Tori because sometimes I don't even realize
it for a while...it was so amazing...so very overwhelming...and one of the
best moments in my life....I will never ever forget it. I love Tori so
much.
I got a T-shirt and a tourbook/program. I got the babydoll shirt of what's
on the limited edition Scarlet's Walk DVD cover.
