This is my account I originally posted at the time, right after seeing the
AT35-m2-d30 show in San Antonio:

Subject: Just got in from seeing my first Tori concert!! WOW!
I have just returned from seeing my first Tori show, at the Majestic Theatre
here in San Antonio. I am still feeling the effect, and I LOVE it! :)
the 9/30/98 show-
I've emailed a few people who told me it was cool, and you weren't wrong.
The wheelchair-accessable seating was great for me (except when people stood
up but that's cool, I would have too if I could :) ) and my three friends.
The Devlins were an excellent opening act, although I couldn't get one of
their CDs being sold there I'll definitely track them down either locally or
online.
And Tori came out....and blew me (and everyone else I bet! :) ) away! I was
expecting something intense but I had no idea! Like flying a spacecraft
right into a supernova, and wanting more! I mean, there's this energy that
just hits you just right and you feel a high that you just don't want to
come down from. Tori, the piano, and the band, all in synch. It ROCKED!
I loved the way she altered the arrangement of the songs, you needed to
guess a little as she and the band segued from one song to the next. That I
thought was a neat touch. :)
I've just never heard any of Tori's songs done like they were performed
tonight. It was just so intense, I wished I wasn't so quickly running out
of words to describe the experience. I hope other SA ewf's enjoyed it as
much :)
I know this isn't an 'official' Tori concert report, but I was just so taken
with tonight's show, I wanted to capture that in text form, my take on
seeing my first Tori show.
I was tempted to wheel down to the stage after the show and tell the
security crew that the show was excellent and I just wanted to tell Tori I
thought she was the coolest....then I figured the security guys would say
'yeah you and 3000 other people' so I didn't. Seeing her live was enough
:)
Next time I have to leave my schedule open to make it to the meet and greet.
To anyone who has yet to see a show on the tour, you'll like it :) Just
seeing 'Precious Things', 'Spacedog', and 'Raspberry Swirl' live is worth
it!
...............
Today it still ranks as a beyond cool experience :)

sounds like you too accidentally got the parallel universe version of the
album. The SW CD I have is excellent :)
Daniel- interesting comments comparing and contrasting Britney and
Christina.

then be very glad you weren't here in late '98/early '99! One could easily
be as unlucky as the unknown crewmember on the Hindenburg who tried sneaking
a cigarette break....

Similar to what happens to me with some music. I can enjoy listening to a
CD riding in a car or listening on my discman when I'm out someplace, but
the full impact doesn't really get to me until I sit back at home and give
it a listen on my home stereo. Hard to describe- something about the
atmosphere of listening to a CD to fill time on the road or waiting
someplace as opposed to being able to sit back and hear it all the way
through uninterupted. Sometimes what happens, and I've especially noticed
it with all of tori's cd's, is that I feel like I'm hearing something a
little different or a little deeper with each listen.

I didn't respond to it primarily because I'd already seen it, read it and
thought about it. Secondarily, I long ago gave up on the hope that Rolling
Stone would ever get its head out of its ass. Everything Lester Bangs'
character said about that magazine in "Almost Famous" is true -- and is more
true now than it was in the 1970s. RS isn't a music magazine; it's a
lifestyle magazine claiming to be a music magazine. I unsubscribed when it
had two semi-naked actresses (read: not musicians) on its cover in a very
short period. When they called me and offered me a low rate to re-subscribe,
I turned them down. I said, "I didn't unsubscribe because I couldn't afford
it. I unsubscribed because I've lost all respect for your magazine." They
never called me back.
IMO, the last remotely good issue they did was the one after Kurt Cobain
died, although the indepth look at the resurgence of heroin use (following
the heroin OD of Johnny Melvoin) might also qualify. (Even if it did inspire
a trite Sarah McLachlan song). With RS, it's hit or miss -- and it's mostly
miss.
I'm honestly surprised Ms. Jett hasn't also given up on them.
It's a shame, honestly, that a magazine that prints such swill and crap can
actually make or break bands. They have no idea what's good or what isn't
anymore, and haven't since they moved from San Francisco to New York City.
Yeah, I'm feeling cynical. But even when I was considering a career in music
journalism, the thought of working for RS *never* appealed to me.
> I don't think it helps much that rock music in recent years has largely

I think the proliferation of underground music through alternative channels
-- mp3.com (which is now charging users and music-makers an arm and a leg,
thus pretty much killing off one of the good alternative sources),
kazaa/morpheus, internet radio, word of mouth, etc. -- is what's happening.
Mass media is catering to the lowest common denominator. Pretty much
everyone else has checked out. I don't listen to the radio much anymore; I
listen to CDs, or I listen to soundfiles of songs friends have sent me by
way of recommendation (after which I tend to buy more CDs of those artists).
At least one of my musician friends says he would rather be boiled in
dogshit than sign with a record company. I think a lot of quality acts
realize that their road to artistic credibility AND wide distribution of
their music has nothing to do with WEA (read: AOL Time-Warner), Sony,
Universal, or any of the remaining music-publishing oligopolies.
But that may be because I've had my head in the underground scene for a
while. :)

I'll keep this short, as there's a storm coming--we've already got the
tornado watch up. I can see both on the live NOAA feed from their
website as I type this...oops, not live anymore, just got
disconnected...
Whether that Rolling Stone letter really was from Joan Jett or not, I
agree with its author...my opinion was that rock was already terminally
ill around 1975 or so, and was definitely dead by the early 80s, when
MTV hit the airwaves. The Police, IMHO, were the last rock band who
could honestly be called that. The "hair bands" which followed, as
typified by G'n'R(tm) and a horde of entertainment-industrial complex
manufactured soundalikes, were an ugly joke. ("Lies"? Right, Axl. Ha ha
ha.) The whole Nirvana-and-aftermath "alternative" scene was just an
echo; by the time we heard about them here in Arkansas Cobain had
already offed himself, and their sound was becoming a commodity as
well. There will be no "new Nirvana," or much new anything else, unless
and until the Big Seven global media stranglehold is broken. Even the
local clubs, the nurseries of new music, are increasingly under their
boot--in America at any rate.
I'm now treated to the indignity of those hair bands--even early,
pre-"Bleach" Nirvana--being labeled "oldies." Not Classic(tm), the
Official Industry Name(tm) (according to Clear Channel(tm), the sole
vendor of Classic Rock(tm) here), but "oldies," by annoying little
brats who never knew a world without a UPC code attached--or school
shootings, for that matter. I always associated "oldies" with Elvis and
doo-wop and the Beatles, the sort of stuff popular around the time I
was born. Before that was, what, swing?
I don't know which label is more insulting.
Tornadoes? Try market fascism.
Estraven.
p.s. weather alert: that tornado watch just got extended from Texas
clear up into Illinois--all of Tornado Alley and then some. Until 0400.
The Weathercube (for you Brits, that's a special radio just for
weather, fitted with an alarm if there's an alert--think of it as a
smoke detector for storms) is jabbering about "all spotters on full
alert status," "lifted indices at or greater than minus 10," "wind
shear approaching 20 m/s between 700 and 500 mb," and "condensation
energy above 3000 J/kg at 850 and 700 mb," which means serious
business...the mobile Doppler from Stormlab is rolling out as well.
It'll be a rough night.
