This is the whole story that my mom & bro told me.

Well, from what my brother and mom described it's about a woman that is
going blind and it runs in her family...she has a son that will be blind
eventually. She wants him to get an eye job so he won't be blind. Because
this woman is going blind it's hard to find work but she doesn't want anyone
to know she's going blind because of that, so her friend helps her memorize
steps with her eyes closed. People make fun of her because of it.
Somewhere along the line some person wants to die but doesn't want to
committ suicide so he demands this woman to kill him and then she does
unwillingly and gets tried for murder. The irony of the situation is that
she really did kill this person, but only because he was demanding and
threatening it...I think. So, she's proven guilty and sentence to death.
The little boy does get his eye job and right before she's hung, her friend
gives her the glasses of the boy so she knows he got the eye job, the woman
sings to her boy and then they hang her.

I just couldn't handle that...it was just go gut-wrenchingly painful to
think about that I feel like puking. I mean it sounds like an amazingly
well written movie, but I wouldn't be able to handle it.

What my brother did was tell me the story so I'd understand the album, bet
he didn't know that I don't wanna hear the story because of it's storyline
or whatever. Well, what's said is said and it was a mistake that I even
understand that I was wrong. It's hard for me to admit if I'm wrong, but I
realized that.

Hey...well last night I attempted to watch more of it but I fell asleep.

I'm really confused right now, I wonder if I already e-mailed this story to
you...hmm...well, here it goes again. You can probably tell I have major
OCD.

I woke up really early because I had a strange stomach ache...I felt like I
couldn't breathe easily or something. I realized I was hungry later, but I
think I was a little homesick too. I'm still in Maine. I like it here and
I'm having a good time, but, once again, Dorthy says, "There's no place like
home."

I went upstairs and it was about 7:00 am or so and ate & drank something
because I was hungry. Anyways, one of the cats, Rosie, jumped up on my lap
and purred while resting. It was a really nice moment. I connect with
animals so well. I went back downstairs and fell asleep finally. I was
dreaming that I was on the phone with my dad and I wanted to talk to him so
I said, "Dad!?" twice and the second time I said it I was half awake/half
asleep and my mom heard both of them. She thought that was really sweet and
told my dad that. He said that he kept saying "What?" in his
dream...lol...he's hillarious. I miss him.

During lunch we watched The Shining on TNT, it was really bad being on TV -
edited and commercials...but I think I actually liked watching it better
that way because it didn't scare me. Being that it was daytime and light in
the room, I hardly ever get scared of scary movies. I think it's a very
well done movie, but it scares the hell outta me.

Hannah and I went to see the movie, Maid In Manhattan. I was interested at
first, but it was a really bad movie. It lacked chemistry and relationship
between the couple or whatever. Just like Crazy/Beautiful was lacking
chemistry and relationship.

We played some more of Sims and it was fun. Etc. etc. etc. I'm having a
good time here. But I can't wait to get home.

I got a blurty journal...I like using it, it's fun, but I feel like you all
are my journal so I don't wanna retype things...I dunno, I'll figure it out
later.

Cyndi, I don't even know where to start with your reply; I'll think I'll
wait until you post your second reply first . Admitting that you think that
the golden years of hip hop were 97-99 explains your position a little
better, though.

To research your post a little better, I scoured amazon.com, downloaded
files from Kazaa and looked up lyrics from ohhla.com (a trusted resource),
just to see what you were giving me as examples of rap songs that "said"
things. For what it's worth, I know -I- always look to Kid Rock for not only
lyrics that say things, but also examples of fantastic hip hop. Saying that
rap artists these days have less to say than the rock scene, and then
pulling out the examples of Ja Rule, DMX, Puff Daddy (oh man) and KID ROCK
really confused me. Are you saying that these artists had lots to say, back
in the prime hip hop years of 97-99?

I take it you're familiar with the term "old school"? 97-99 IS not
considered the golden "old school" years of hip hop, and for good reason.

I will say that out of those listed, 2Pac is the one who had the greatest
gift for lyrical style, but no matter how hard I try, no matter how many
songs I download, I can't make myself like him. His beats are a little more
sparse than what appeals to my ear. Although he died in 1996, so I'm not
sure if you could include him in the golden years of 97-99 of hip hop.

I'm sorry Cyndi, if I actually burst out laughing when you wrote that you
only discovered that Puff Daddy's music is unoriginal, "especially when I
looked at the liner notes and saw that **EVERY** single song in the album
was sampled from at least one song)". Hip hop has its roots in sampling,
turntablists and DJs spinning old soul and funk records for their MCs to
have beats to rap over. It's not only a way of sourcing beats, it's also a
way of paying homage to your favourite artists.

Want to know what songs -your- favourite rap artists have sampled lately?
Try using http://www.members.accessus.net/~xombi/intro.html as a source. Led
Zeppelin and James Brown being consistently sampled across all years of hip
hop; Brown sampled no less than 2 times in NWA's "Fuck the Police", an
honorary as high as any Grammy, to be sure. I don't think hip hop is all
about sitting around your Roland 808 and trying to come up with some new
beats.

By extension, a lot of dance music contains samples; Australian group the
Avalanches (one of the best in the world) is famous for their use of samples
in their music, to the point where they're revered for it (900-1000 samples
on their debut record, if you're wondering). Download (or buy) their
"Frontier Psychiatrist" song, and see if -you- can catch all 37 samples
jam-packed into the song. For what it's worth, the Avalanches were the first
artists given permission to sample a Madonna song in their work, so
impressed was she by their talents.

Collage is a respected genre of art, isn't it?

Looking forward to your next reply, although I'm still awaiting part two of
your first one.

Actually, maybe I should be printing up these emails and giving them to any
of my senior students I teach next year, to get them off the Nelly / Bone
Thugs kick they always find themselves on, to show them there's more to rap
than Eminem and Dr Dre.

rocking over the beats,
Dani.

You'd think I could come up with a better subject than that.

Cyndi wrote in #1767:

>ACTUALLY, I'd kinda like to see a "new" wannabe Manson.. see how well

Interesting how you put two freak shows together. ;-) If you go by artists
that use shock tactics, Eminem would have to be the new Marilyn Manson. I
base that on Ozzy Osbourne being the first in the line, then Alice Cooper,
followed by MM. But Eminem doesn't really fit the genre, so either he's the
first of the popular shock artists in his domain, or what/who comes after
Manson has to be really freaky.

But of all the artists I mention above, all of them seem to have a sense of
humour, albeit an unusual one. It's just lost amongst the shock/schlock
tactics. They certainly seem to know what they're doing, except maybe for
Ozzy who is too drug addled, bless him.

Well after last week, it seems punk is dead with the passing of Joe
Strummer of a heart attack at age 50.

Violet asked:
>I love hearing how different people celebrate the holidays.
>
>What do you guys do?

As you'd probably guess, it gets rather hot in Australia at Christmas. Last
year was a scorcher but thankfully this year was pleasant for a change. To
suit the climate, most people have given up on the idea of a hot turkey
roast on the day. You might still have turkey, but it's likely to be cold,
along with ham and salads. If anything is likely to be hot, it's probably
seafood, like king prawns (yes, shrimp on the barbie) and fish. Of course,
the day usually involves large quantities of alcohol. Last year we were all
legless by lunchtime from the booze and the heat.

Over recent years, Christmas has been at my sister's place as it's a large
place, there's plenty of things you can do on the lake and it's usually my
side of the family and her in-laws. This year, as the upstairs of her place
is being completed we had it on neutral territory, which was a waterside
park for a picnic. After all the cold seafood, ham and turkey, we went for
a spin on Sydney Harbour while chugging on a few coldies.

Jessica *superstar* Parsons said in #1768:
>I love blink 182 but i don't think fo them as pure punk.

Neither do I and that goes for The Offspring as well. They seem to be
having too much fun to fit the image.

So if your middle name is Rhodes, does that mean you let guys bang on you
like a piano?

 From Bethany in #1770:
>I seriously have like four unfinished RDT posts from about two weeks ago
>sitting in my drafts folder. one i didn't send because I was a little
>drunk when I wrote it.... and other three, well, i just forgot i wrote
>'em. the stuff in them was good, but horribly out of date.

Hell, send 'em in. Especially the drunken ramblings, they're funny. As for
things being out of date, considering how little is coming through this
place I don't think it would matter. Just ask Simon. ;-) Anything's better
than nothing when nothing seems to be everything.

Have a happy and safe New Year y'all.
Brian
