Subject: virus thingy

I got a little notification from Violet's virus detection thingy that my
computer was infected with Klez virus. Interesting.
I'm not infected with anything.
However there is an individual on another mailing list I'm on that is infected
with the thing. Supposedly, he's tried "everything" to get rid of it, but
hasnt' been successful. He has my address in his infected address book.
I've actually gotten e-mails from myself from this thing (a nasty little trick
of this thing is that it likes to masquarade as other e-mail addresses when
it spurts out mass mailings).

I've checked my computer and I'm clean. I also run Linux and it's pretty darn
near impossible for me to get it.

In the past, I've accidently sent postings intended for this list to the other
list, and since Outlook likes to automatically save and file whatever e-mail
addresses it detects, it's more than likely that the list address is in that
guys address book. So, if you get a strange e-mail with my e-mail address
attatched to it, it didn't come me.

Well that's a long assed winded way to say "I'M INNOCENT." :)

Roxanne

[Note from Violet: Don't worry ... the only person who would get
it would be me. Since the list is set so only subscribers
can post, anything from someone who isn't on the list would
be rejected. The ToriThought viral control message has also
been changed to warn people that they *might* have a virus.
The warning was originally written back when the virus sent
itself out with the true infected person's address in the
Return-Path field, but now the virus has morphed so that even
that field is forged. So that can't be relied upon any more.
Particularly interesting are the times when I get copies of my
own virus warning telling me I've sent a virus to myself --
which happens when the virus is forging ToriThoughts addresses.
What a pain in the ass this whole Klez thing is. I wonder if
       it will ever go away.]

Yesterday:
I woke up around 11:00 am or so and I decided to go to the mall with Emma.
I was actually planning that for a little while now...whatever. Anyways, we
went to the mall later on in the afternoon and bought some things. I bought
3 beautiful (probably fake) diamond rings and a nice chain necklace with a
heart on it that. The necklace was actually originally gonna be for my
friend Brittany's sweet 16 present, but then I saw this Josh Hartnett
photo/bio book that she would love, so I liked the necklace anyways and kept
it for myself. I got my life long best friend, Dan a Linkin Park poster for
his 15th birthday comin' up, and I got my friend, Elena a beautiful silver
necklace for her 19th birthday comin' up. I started playing more of The
Sims game...it's actually pretty fun and interesting.

My dad loves the song, "Scarlet's Walk" He's a guitarist and pianist, so
maybe he'll learn the notes and then I can sing it on a tape or whateva and
have it. That'd be really cool.

Current mood: Content
Current sounds/music: "Taxi Ride", "Scarlet's Walk" by Tori Amos

Subject: best of 2002

Well, friends, it has come time for the best of 2002. This year was, for me,
a great year for music. Between Christina Aguiliera getting naked and Justin
Timberlake feeling Justified, there was some great stuff that came out and
nearly fell through the cracks into oblivion, only to be picked out by
chance or word of mouth.

1. Rasputina, "Cabin Fever!" (www.rasputina.com)
It's sad that Melora Creager is probably one of the most talented and
inventive musicians out there today, and no one knows who she is. But at
least she keeps on releasing albums, albums that keep getting better and
better. Cabin Fever is one of those that takes a while to get into - at
first i didn't think it was that good, but then realized it's just not
that easy to listen to. there aren't any catchy songs, no hooks, nothing
like Rasputina's first two albums. The instrumentation has evolved as well,
from more traditional cello parts to distorted electronic arrangements that
recall Nine Inch Nails or Marilyn Manson. This album is not for everyone,
but it is excellent, a strange and funny mix of everything in Melora
Creager's head.

2. Alison Krauss and Union Station, Live
Wow. What can I say? I only got this double cd a couple weeks ago, and here
it is at #2. Because it is that good, and every time I hear Alison Krauss'
voice my toes curl. I had never heard Alison Krauss and Union Station
outside of "A Man of Constant Sorrow" (by the way? Dan Tyminski, great voice
too), so I was completely unprepared for just how good this band sounds
together. Man, they just have their shit together completely. I haven't
heard any of their studio albums yet, but everyone is telling me that they
sound better on this album than anywhere else. I'm trying to pick out
highlights, but every song is good, so you should just listen to the whole
thing straight through.

3. Beth Orton, Daybreaker
Of any music I've heard lately, I wish Beth Orton's could be a painting. She
just has a way of putting sounds together, sounds that don't really go
together, and not only make them work, but sound gorgeous and spare. Nothing
superfluous or extra, just excellent songs knit together with Orton's voice,
vulnerable but knowing. There's an ongoing feeling a movement throughout the
album, starting with the beautiful but ominous "Paris Train". The title
track is also very beautiful but has that same feeling of uneasiness, like
something is about to break apart.

4. Be Good Tanyas, Blue Horse (www.begoodtanyas.com)
No one has heard of these ladies, I wouldn't have either, except i heard
them mentioned briefly on "All Things Considered" and heard them play on "A
Prairie Home Companion". I wouldn't call them straight Bluegrass, but
there's a definite influence there, as well as Folk and Country. The playing
is superb, and Frazey Ford's voice is odd (she always seems like she's
singing with a couple of marbles in her mouth) but fits perfectly with the
music. The strongest cuts on this album are renditions of traditional songs,
including "Lakes of Pontchartrain" and "Rain and Snow".

5. Eminem, The Eminem Show
Everything that can be said about Eminem has been said, so I won't bore you.
All politics and controversy aside, this is a damn good album from a very
talented artist. The words are tight and his use of beats and sampling has
only gotten better. Much of the content of this album is based around the
quickly tiring theme of "Everyone hates me", so it'll be interesting to see
what issues he decides to tackle next.

6. Tori Amos, Scarlet's Walk
I've thought a lot about this album. I'm not exactly sure what's wrong with
it, but there's a couple small things that's keeping it from being an
excellent album. I would say that it's too long, but at the same time I
don't know what I'd get rid of (besides "Wampum Prayer"). mostly i think
it's just too much good stuff in one place. Some of these songs could've
been
b-sides or been shelved entirely. But of course this would sacrifice
whatever concept Tori's trying to get across. Personally, I wish she would
drop the heady concepts behind each album and focus more on, you know, the
music.

7. Bonnie Raitt, Silver Lining
Some are calling this the best album of her career, and although I don't
know Bonnie Raitt's body of work very well, i have to say that i don't know
how it can get better than this. It's just groovy to listen to, and at times
she really rocks. You can tell she loves (and is very good at) the kind of
music she's making. The title track is actually a cover of the David Gray
song, and amazingly enough, she actually outdoes his version.

8. Herbie Hancock, Future 2 Future
This is a strange album, a bizarre mix of dance, funk, electronica and
spoken word. It's hard to put a finger on Hancock's style these days, but
the results are interesting nonetheless. The first half of the album is
excellent, but seems to peter out a bit near the end.

9. Norah Jones, Come Away with Me
Norah Jones has been played and hyped just about enough for the backlash to
start. This album is just so in the middle, no wonder it's sold millions of
copies. It borrows from so many styles, from Hank Williams to jazz standards
to a couple self-penned tracks (to satisfy the singer-songwriter fanatics).
Such a motley crew of songs shouldn't work but does, with Jones' vulnerable,
slightly raspy voice being the glue that holds it all together. It isn't an
album that's going to conquer the world, but it sure is sweet to listen to.

10. Alanis Morissette, Under Rug Swept
It's easy to write Alanis off as a joke, a one-liner about angry women, but
that would be simplifying one of the most generous, honest, self-aware
(perhaps a bit too self-aware) musicians today. I saw her on the double bill
with Tori Amos in 1999 and was not impressed. Then I saw her in June of 2002
at Jones Beach and was completely, unexpectedly blown away. She carried the
show, and carried it well (though I still don't believe she's playing that
guitar). Every track on this album is strong, miles beyond her first two
albums. The lyrics are still very much Alanis, at times a little too
self-centered, but the music is far more interesting than it's ever been
before.

thank you, and good night

-bethany

Subject: clarity is clearer than it's ever been

In the newspaper the other day, there was an article with the headline
"Huge new Bush plan to cut taxes".

I couldn't get past the "Huge new Bush" part.

Yes, I am 12 years old.

I'm feeling very disturbed (is that the word I want? let's say it is)
lately. I was sitting alone in a beautiful park the other day, having
some quiet Me-time, listening to the wind blowing through the trees
and the squirrels running through the branches, barking at each other
(which is one of my current favorite sounds), and it was very Zen. I
was trying to think heavy personal "A New Year Is Upon Me ... What
Does That Mean?" kind of thoughts. That got me to thinking about my
Inner Child, because that's something I'm having to work on a lot
lately, as shmooky as it sounds, and all of a sudden a thought popped
into my head: "What if my Inner Child is retarded?" Then I started
wondering if using the word "retarded" is un-PC and if so, when exactly
that happened, and does it still it hold true if you're talking about
yourself, and, well, it was a very weird few minutes.

But really, I was just avoiding what I fear may be the reality of the
situation. I think I may need to be in the "special class."

Teunis of the Winterlion fame not only told us about his Christmas, but his
New Year as well, which gives me the idea of telling my New Year's Day
recovery ritual. It usually revolves around waking up late in different
states of coherence, depending on the night before, but what it does
involve without fail is plonking myself down in front of the video at
lunchtime (keeping in mind time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so) to
watch a B-grade 80's movie called "Get Crazy". I crank it through the
stereo as well to blow out the cobwebs.

Get Crazy is sort of a rock and roll comedy based around a New Year's Eve
concert in 1982. The comedy is pretty corny but the music makes up for it.
There's a guest appearance by Lou Reed as Auden, a reclusive rock legend,
but the guy who really steals the show is Malcom McDowell as punk legend
turned rock superstar "Reggie Wanker". It's worth watching just to see him
strutting around in his underpants. There's also Robert Picardo (Star Trek:
Voyager) as the fire inspector and Ed Begley Jr is the bad guy.

I'd love it to come out on DVD as my video is at least 18 years old. If you
go to Amazon.com you can search on it and request it, so hopefully if
enough people do the studio will release it.

I've noticed a few other old favourites are to be released in the next
couple of weeks on DVD, being Flying High 1 & 2 (Airplane 1 & 2) and for a
change in genre, Altered States.

Beth gave her top 10 albums of 2002 in digest #1773, with a little
disclaimer that they're not necessarily albums that came out in the actual
year of 2002. That's fine by me as I'd be struggling to find that many
albums myself and there are a few I don't think much of, so all the better
for not including them.

Let me see...
1. Eminem - The Eminem Show. The boy wonder of everything bad has grown up
some and shown he has a keen sense of humour.

2. Lambretta (self titled). Ok, so this was released in 2001 but I'd never
heard of them here until May. This Swedish rock band kicks butt, even
though I find lead singer Linda Sundblad's vocals to be a little high
pitched at times.

3. Concrete Blonde - Group Therapy. At the time this came out, I described
it as the return of an old lover. 8 years since their last album and
they've still got it.

Now in no apparent order.
Jimmy Eat World (self titled) Very pop-rock, but they sound different to
most of the bands getting around these days.

Magnapop - Hot Boxing and Rubbing Doesn't Help. These albums are from 1994
and 1996 respectively but I just love them. Heard the second album while in
Canada and instantly fell for them. They've never been released here, but
I'm sure they would have done well. Sort of like Veruca Salt with a punk
edge. They saved my sanity, along with Scott Weiland's "12 Bar Blues" while
I was driving from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

Silverchair - Diorama. I thought this album blew the first few times I
heard it, but I've learned to appreciate it for what it is. I just hope
Natalie Imbruglia gives Daniel Johns back his balls for the next album.

Puddle Of Mudd - Come Clean. I think the only thing that saves these
Nirvana wannabes is that their level of angst surpasses that of Alanis on
her period. For amusement value only.

Most disliked album of the year: Filter - The Amalgamut. Find a new twist
guys, this one is just plain boring.

I know that wasn't really 10 albums. In the past it wasn't unusual for me
to buy 30+ albums a year, but for the last few years very little has
inspired me.

In all honesty, I can't include Scarlet's Walk. While an album that sounds
somewhere between LE and UTP should really do it for me, it'll probably end
up hiding at the back of my collection.

How about that consolation win in the cricket, Matt? ;-)

Brian
The end is always a new beginning - Captain Cloud, Get Crazy
