Warning: lots of engineering geek-speak ahead...
Assuming:
(a) the air-fuel ratio is kept as close to "stoichiometric" (that is,
the two parts hydrogen to one part oxygen) as is possible with present
engine control systems. If it's too rich, you'll waste fuel (and maybe
create an explosion hazard, if the level in the exhaust is above the
"lower explosive limit"--admittedly unlikely, but I've heard of it
happening to a few *very* unlucky mechanics). The real problem, though,
is if it's too lean: Too much oxygen will raise the combustion
temperature, to the point where it'll react with the nitrogen--creating
the dreaded "oxides of nitrogen," or "NOx" in SAE-speak--the stuff of
smog, acid rain, ozone in the wrong places, and global warming (nitrous
oxide is a greenhouse gas, just like carbon dioxide, methane, and CFCs).
The above only applies, of course, if the hydrogen is actually burned
in an internal (piston, rotary, gas turbine, etc.) or external (read,
"steam-driven") combustion engine. In a fuel cell, the reaction takes
place at well below combustion temperatures, so smog production is not
a problem. However...
(b) Where will that hydrogen come from? Unless you envision a
collection nozzle stuck in a (main sequence) star somewhere, or maybe
slurping up intergalactic gas clouds, it'll have to come from a source
here on Earth. Which means splitting up some other molecule to get it:
(1) Methane. Easy (it's where NASA gets theirs), but dirty; doing so
makes carbon dioxide as a byproduct, so what's the point? Ditto for
coal gas, which was an important source in "the old days."
(2) Water. Difficult. Takes LOTS of juice. Which has to come from
somewhere, typically a coal-fired boiler, or a dam, or a fission
reactor (blech). Of course, you could use solar collectors, or wind, or
tidal generators, but you'd need lots of them. As in, you'd need all of
Texas for enough solar collectors to make enough electricity to make
enough hydrogen to power the cars there. Assuming it's sunny.
Which, in Texas, it often isn't.
Geothermal is a possibility, if you're Bjork Gudmundsdottir or someone
similarly Icelandic. Most of us are not Icelandic, unfortunately. Plus,
volcanoes smell horrible, corrode almost everything (you have to make
the plumbing out of something inert, like titanium alloy), make an
awful mess with dust and ash, and have a nasty tendency to erupt now
and again and bury your expensive power plant in hot lava. Not fun.
As for fusion, it'll be here "Real Soon Now." Right after we've cured
poverty and ignorance, colonized Mars, convinced every Windows user to
switch to Linux, and made Israel and Palestine get along. It's still a
long long way from breakeven to your PG&E bill.
Oh, and one other thing: the Second Law of thermodynamics.
Specifically, it'll take more energy to make, transport, and use the
hydrogen in fuel-cell cars than it would to simply wire the cars'
electric motors directly to the power plant, perhaps in slot-car
fashion, or by using magnetic coils (superconducting, natch) in the
roadbed. Can you say "Carnot's Law" and "waste heat"? I knew you could.
If the money's available to spend on hydrogen, it would be better
spent on rebuilding our cities, so we wouldn't be so dependent on cars
in the first place.
But of course, the money's not there. It's being spent on a "war on
terror" or some such Orwellian horseshit. Armageddon, here we come.
What was it Ben Franklin said about liberty and security? I forgot.
Estraven.

Tori Amos' musical journey across America
Friday, February 7, 2003 Posted: 8:08 AM EST (1308 GMT)
(CNN) -- A piano player since she was 2 1/2 years old, Tori Amos emerged as
one of the most emotionally intense female singer-songwriters of the '90s.
The North Carolina native went on a musical odyssey for her most recent
album, "Scarlet's Walk," an exploration of America's soul post 9/11.
TMR caught up with Amos recently:
TMR: Has becoming a mother influenced your music?
AMOS: I think motherhood is a place that you live in. I think it's
something that's changed every cell in my body. I'm much more comfortable
being in a place of nurturing than I was [when I was being] warrior woman
out there! Sometimes it's a very lonely place to be. And it can be very
competitive.
Yes, I'm a lioness, and I'm a hunter for ideas, but at the same time, I
love being a nurturer and maybe being a mom made me realize how important
that is in my life.
TMR: How did you come up with the themes in "Scarlet's Walk"?
AMOS: I was on tour at the end of September 2001 and being out there with
these people that were opening their hearts up, and [people's] masks went
down. It was almost as if skin was peeled off, and you were seeing people
for the first time and maybe they were seeing each other for the first
time. I think relationships were being formed very rapidly.
The story started to shape itself [around] this woman who's taking a walk,
trying to find out what she believes in and who this creature we call
America really is.
TMR: And is Scarlet an alter ego?
AMOS: I guess she is an alter ego, but she's also any woman. She bleeds,
she's a threat, and through her eyes she's seeing how she feels about
herself as a woman, her responsibility maybe to her true mother, which is
her country.
All the songs are based on real people and real events put in a story form.
TMR: What influenced you musically for this album?
AMOS: I was kind of studying all the great '70s records for this album.
It's patterned more after classic song structure -- Fleetwood Mac's
"Rumors," Neil Young's "Harvest." I think that I was trying to just immerse
myself in the way things were recorded. It was a real craftsmanship. ...
It's very hand done. Handmade. And so we approached it like that.
TMR: What are your thoughts on the current crop of female
singer-songwriters? Vanessa Carlton often gets called "the new Tori!"
AMOS: Avril Lavigne, Vanessa Carlton, Michelle Branch and Norah Jones. ...
It's just thrilling to know that the torch is being passed, and that's what
this is about. A generation of songwriters can go out in the jungle and
make a path that wasn't there before.
You make a little bit more of a path with your machete, and they can walk
through it and then decide, "No, this is my own now, and now I need to
carve my own path."
TMR: What do you have planned for the future?
AMOS: I have done the sonic novel. I am now getting seduced by the musical
theater concept, maybe writing something. I don't know. Tim Rice said
something to me once that has got me thinking.

Thanks for the welcome backs everyone :)
I just got done listening to a tori cd that I burned. It started as a
thread on the dent forumz about making a cd to represent a month in your
life and this is the one i made.
1. All The Girls Hate Her
2. Pretty Good Year
3. New Age
4/5. Never Seen Blue/Sugar (from the Goddess Boot)
6. Concertina (Fiercest Mix)
7. Jackie's Strength
8. Merman
9. Thank You
10. A Sorta Fairytale
11. Ode To The Banana King
12. Another Girl's Paradise
13. Time
14. Datura
15. Gold Dust
16. Over It
Mine's kind of a "falling in love for the first time in a long time" type
thing. The whole thing has been my own "sorta fairytale" and it was about
"time time time that I love"
So, I decided that I'm going to make my boyfriend a copy and give it to him
for Valentine's Day. He's kinda liking Tori, of course he doesn't have that
much choice since I've been listening to her a whole lot lately :)
take care all,
john

I am not my father. I am not a pacifist - and I am not a woodworker. I'd like
to have anywhere near half his skill actually.
Put him, my little brother and myself in a room and leave us alone - and we'll
probably all come out with some kind of new invention. We ARE similar.
My younger brother is like my mother's father actually... he thinks quite
different.... and has ended up quite a different person.
My father is touring through Europe right now looking at how violins are made
there - to open a shop here. He's been making them for a while but is thinking
of moving into that as a business. In addition to being a schoolteacher at a
Waldorf school.
I can't admit we're not similar. But we're travelling down remarkably
different life paths. We talk a lot these days - I didn't see him much from
when I was 8 'til about umm last year. Change happens, and we've both learned
different wisdoms - to the extent we both learn from eachother.
I would be proud to be like my father (except for the bit about falling out of
love all the time. He thinks he's figured out why and is learning how to deal
with it but it still is different). But I've never been there so what do I
know.
Now - complete topic jump.
First a comment: All of these statements are my -opinions- at this
time. Some have some basis in reality, but most are just guesses.
On Sadam Hussein <sp?>, Iraq, and the terrorist state of the US:
- Sadam -is- a dictator. Not a nice one at all. (unlike, say, US
president FDR :)
- I suspect he has none of the weapons the US is claiming - and while I'll
admit given the chance he'd probably expand his borders and attack his
neighbours - the US really has no business involving themselves there.
- Whether or not they have weapons is largely irrelevant. Almost all
their neighbours -do-. And most of their neighbours are probably
nuclear capable. I don't get this situation at all.
- They -may- be hosting that US-created terrorist group that originated in
Afghanistan. Or they may not. Or they may contain some along with many
other countries in the world. THAT is an entirely different situation -
and Bush's current approach will NOT help him solve that one.
- The war Bush wants -will- be a mistake. I suspect that ties between the
US and the rest of the world will weaken - and that to leave (or enter)
the US will get a lot harder. The only other thing I suspect is that
it'll probably cause a depression in the US sometime (near) in the
future.
- The UN, no matter their unpopularity in some places - are still a really
good idea. I hope they solve this - or at least create more unity in
the friendly powers.
- any country that willfully invades others, continuously breaks
agreements, sends brute squads and threats to other countries is
DEFINITELY a terrorist nation - in the sense that they beget terror.
The US does all of these. That's other than providing weapons of mass
(and small) destruction and mercenaries to most of the world.
I'd like to see some hope that things in the world are going to improve.
Or even just here where I live.
I'd like to see a future where I (or my decendands should I have any)
aren't going to lose home, land, or freedom from invasion. Say - from the
US. I'd like to have some kind of satisfying work to do (unlike now where
all jobs and resources are being taken away by the US).
And now there's threats to add all kind of invasive montoring and tracking
- and threats to destroy public and private property laws here - all to
make the US happy. *sigh*
Augh who knows. But I do think the whole Iraq thing is and will be a
terrible mistake. Nobody likes a bully.
Signing off for now

Ok, so this is a little game called Director's Chair. What you do is you
think of all the songs Tori's ever written or covered that hasn't been a
music video and think up ideas for a music video and describe it.
So, these aren't options:
Crucify, Silent All These Years, Winter, China, Pretty Good Year, God, Past
The Mission, Cornflake Girl, Professional Widow, Caught A Lite Sneeze,
Talula, Hey Jupiter, Spark, Raspberry Swirl, Jackie's Strength, Bliss, Glory
Of The '80s, 1,000 Oceans, StrangeLittleGirl, and A Sorta Fairytale
"Taxi Ride" is going to be the next single from Scarlet's Walk and I heard
that "Crazy" is after that. So you can come up with ideas for that and see
if it's similar.
I will post my ideas in a little bit...

of course the most burning question of the day is:
What flavour is music?
I'm thinking "purple" myself *g*
Life's pretty bizarre lately. Actually the US-caused (sorry - stupid
politician-caused) depression in the area I live in hasn't affected me
-terribly- badly - any more than normal anyways. The city I live in
(Vancouver) hasn't been hit TOO hard, but most of the rest of the province
has. But who knows. Apparently things are recovering now that companies
have come up with new and novel ways to fight the US (illegal) tarrifs <sp>.
Maybe things'll improve soon. I hope so - I like this place :)
Anyways on other notes been exploring a lot innerspace. I keep meaning to
pick up Tori's newest but I've been -terribly- poor - for a number of
reasons, moving not the least *wry grin*. So every now and again I'll
post another odd thinkspace thing.
Lately I've been thinking a great deal about gender issues. Mostly
personal ones. I mean, physically I'm a guy. I'd like to mentally be one
too - mentally I'm 'something else'. but that's a boggle that's hard to
explain, although this is kind of a neat list (sometimes) for exploring
the deeper questions...
though on "American Gods" I think I'm a fan of the old ones still being
around. Those modern ideals are pretty bizarre. But hey, if coyote were
waltzing down MY street I think I'd stop and see if he wanted to share a
story or something. But I'm in Raven's country so...
Anyone read "Charles de Lint" or listen to his music here?
(I've never heard his music... pity)
G'day, eh? :)

Salutations to the World in general, and to you, really deep thinkers, in
particular.
( Excuse me for what i will write, english isn't my mother tongue )
I'm a new one here. I'm 25. I'm french. I'm a student in archeology.
I experienced my first Tori concert a week ago, and it's incredible. I lived
with her music and Neil Gaiman's writings for almost 10 years and my look
on it in had changed in 4 hours. It's a fantastic sensation. So, i'm
re-reading Sandman listening Little Earthquakes
Bethany, i want to congratulate you, for some reasons:
First of all, Hedwige and the Angry Inch is a wonderful movie, probably the
best musical i've seen ( and i think i've seen a lot ) ( except Scarlet's
Walk ( i will come back to this later ) ( i like brackets ) ).
Second, about scarlet's walk as a musical ( and a road movie also ), i
absolutely agree with you, and it's the best musical ever made because
there's just some pictures proposed to go with, so imagination is attracted,
but can make totally hers the world described. I think it will be a
deception ( or not ? maybe i work too much with my brain and too less with
my heart ) to make a movie with it. But, anyway, a project with Tori Amos
and Neil Gaiman together couldn't be anything else than Incredibly Wonderful
and Insanely Fascinating.
Third, your grades are really good and it's a very good thing that you
practice Ceramics. As a student in archeology, there's not a day in which i
don't curse myself ( not for real, anyway ) for not studying it. And it's
the best activity i've made to let the dreams and the thoughts inside my
head go out and comprehend the world ( see what i mean ? ).
Is the " with that, she was gone" a reference to Usual Suspects ?
I experienced an Anti-Gold Dust about 2 monthes ago, and it's a real
disturbing thing.
About 7 years ago, i was a young boy with problems. I won't enter the
details but i was between people i really care, and who were and are
fantastics persons i really loved. And i'm gone. I was living in Marseille,
in the south of France. I moved house in another city, without letting
adresses. And 7 years passed.
About 2 monthes ago, i met a good friend of this era at role-playing games
convention, and we decided to see us again. I was increfibly ahppy, and i
hardly think about anything else, waiting the time of our rendez-vous. The
day came, and nothing: it was a real pleasure to talk to her again, i
learned news from the others, but i feeled ( and her also, i think ) that
time had passed and the dreamy mood of our relations just doesn't exist
anymore. I'm gonna see her, and the others also i think, but there's no
impatience. Anyway, it's not so sad, just a pity. But we have memories, and
maybe it can influence us, and we have the imagination harmless, and that's
a fantastic thing, and we have art.
Good bye,
Manuel

Okay.. I've been slapped down with what seems to be a relapsed
cold. I'm just now managing to get over it.. AGAIN.. let's pray that I
actually stay not-sick this time.. o_O This post from me is gonna be
short and sweet cuz it's 3 in the morning and I'm supposed to be in bed
as of three hours ago. :P~~~ but firstly, happy (belated and not so
belated) birthday to Mikewhy, Jana K, Brian T, Lavs, and Victoria. Hope
they were delicious! :)
okay, having said that, I feel a LITTLE better. I didn't use to
lurk like this.. nor will I ever become a full-fledged lurker.. :P EVER.
either way though, I am alive, thankfully, and I'll reply to some RDTRN's
when I've got all my health back. :P~~~~~~
much love and lubricants!

Saddam Hussein is a brutal dictator. His cruel hand and
megalomaniacal attempts to grab power have both directly and
indirectly impoverished his country. (Directly, by funding projects
that benefit no one other than himself, and indirectly, by continuing
a policy whereby the international community, led by the United
Nations and the United States, have imposed harsh sanctions on Iraq.)
There is little doubt that Iraq, at least, and the world at large,
would be better off without him. Comparisons between Hussein and
Adolf Hitler fall short largely because Hussein is the cause of many
of his country's economic woes. Hitler rose to power as a result of
similar economic hard times. Hussein's overall sphere of influence
is much smaller than Hitler's was. This is evidenced by the general
lack of respect he commands outside of the borders of his country.
Say what you will about Hitler: he had a large number of sympathizers
in just about every country he invaded, partially enabling him to
take over Poland, Austria, and France. If the recent tape purporting
to be from Osama Bin Laden is genuine, Hussein is even held in
contempt by someone who would have more to gain than lose in an
alliance.
There is no question that Saddam Hussein is dangerous. I believe,
however, that President George W. Bush is even more dangerous.
Mr. Bush has stated that he will proactively go in to Iraq, even if
that action is in defiance of United Nations wishes, because Iraq has
defied United Nations wishes. Some or our strongest allies have
expressed serious misgivings about any plan to topple Hussein's
regime. The White House has alternately belittled those misgivings
and the nations expressing them, and pointed to the voluminous lies
and misrepresentations of facts coming out of Baghdad, ignoring the
comparably voluminous lies and misrepresentations coming out of
Washington.
And even though Hussein is dangerous, Mr. Bush has yet to make any
compelling, non-speculative argument, that it is in our interest to
aggressively depose him.
Now Mr. Bush's defiance of international opinion has put NATO in a
precarious situation. On one hand, you have the genuine misgivings
of some of our NATO allies for a US-led offensive. On the other
hand, you have the legitimate concern for the safety of another one
of our NATO allies. This is quite a Catch-22 for our allies: oppose
our actions and cause instability in Turkey, or support our actions
and be willing to protect Turkey. It is unreasonable for anyone both
to oppose our actions and to protect Turkey.
All of this is the direct result of the heavy-handed and contemptible
actions of President Bush. He is about to overthrow an otherwise
sovereign government and cause a rift within NATO that could
ultimately destroy the alliance. All of this time, we have no
declared exit strategy from Iraq, where any new fledgling government
would be subject to a greater economic burden than Germany had when
Hitler rose to power.
With Hitler in power, there was an unlikely and tenuous alliance
between the Soviet Union and the United States, allied against a
common enemy. With Bush in power, we may be watching the formation
of an unlikely and tenuous alliance between Iraq and the al-Qaeda
network, allied against a common enemy.
Please do not think I am trying to compare Adolf Hitler with George
W. Bush. Hitler was a democratically elected politician who brought
his country out of an economic depression. Bush is a judicially
appointed politician who is driving his country into an economic
depression.

Violet - you had me cracking up with your description of the
Bertie Bott's beans. I was laughing so hard by myself in my
office. That's okay, they all think I am crazy here
anyways. I have been walking around singing a dirty song
all afternoon on accident because I have it stuck in my
head. Anyways, you may not be evil enough to put some out
in a candy dish for unsuspecting victims to eat, but I am.
I am going to order some and have a dish full at my
apartment and in my office. HAHAHA!!! Wee!
Yes, I am a little behind!
Thanks to all who sent me birthday greetings (a month ago).
I am now 24. Boring! Next year, I will be able to rent a
car without a young driver fee. Yay!
I am looking forward to Valentines Day this year for the
first time ever. I have the coolest date planned. My son
and I are going to see Jungle Book 2. He is going to draw
me a picture of chocolate and flowers. He is too sweet!
Tori is going to be in Minnesota on March 30th and I am not
going. I have never missed a Tori concert. I am pretending
it doesn't count since Duluth is 2 1/2 hours away from me.
My friend pleaded guilty to criminal vehicular manslaughter
for the accident so it won't be going to trial. He can go
for a downward sentence this way, as opposed to the upward
sentence the prosecution was going to go for if it went to
trial. His sentencing is scheduled for April 14th.
I have to go out and start my car to let it warm up for 20
minutes before I leave work. There is a -30 wind chill
today. BRRR!!! I am so looking forward to spring. My car
is so dirty, but I can't get it washed or it will freeze
shut. Gotta love Minnesota!

This week I had the following paragraph in my article on persona:
"Last weekend I visited my daughter and to my horrors discovered my
mother-in-law was recreated again into another generation. I spent a
weekend with two mother-in-laws. 30 years from now I am sure another
generation of my mother-in-law will exist. Judy is expecting in March was
in the hospital with high blood pressure just like her mother was a
generation before."
Moran Faye was born today in Rochester, NY and I am a grandfather. Morgan
was born on my mother-in-laws birthday and my mother-in-law's name was Faye.
Enough said on that.
I am a very happy man.
