Subject: We talk talk talk talk all-ll ni-ight throu-ough...It's what we
like to do...

Arija Said (doesn't that sound like an Arabian City?):

"for those who might like to discuss something besides the war (like me),
let
me pose a topic (equally as difficult). I'm currently writing a paper on
whether or not westerners (or anyone) can judge the validity and humanity of
the African (Sudanese, specifically) practice of female circumcision. it's
very difficult to stop thinking in universals and "truths" and to force
oneself to work within the discourse of a culture and a people. what are
peoples thoughts about this specific issue and the theory behind it? I'd
really like to know."

I haven't researched this topic (because it is stomach turning to me), but
when I talk about abuse, my definition is anything that robs the dignity
from a child is abuse. Circumcision at birth? Maybe, because I don't know
how much dignity a newborn has. To do the same to a girl at birth? Same
thought. Now when you are grabbing 10 -12 year old girls from their homes
and slicing and dicing, I have a problem with that. But in some African
cultures, boys aren't circumcised until that tween period. From what I've
read, this is an acceptable ritual that boys both anticipate and fear. If
that is the same with girls, and the procedure isn't permanently damaging
(disfigurement is in the eye of the beholder if you think about it), then it
is a cultural custom that Western thought shouldn't infringe upon. On the
other hand, if it is an accepted rite of abuse and no girl ever looks
forward to it as well as fear it, then it should be taken up as a human
rights issue.

I guess the biggest thing I want to point out is that diversity is something
no one person will truly understand. You can study different cultures for
decades and still have your views influenced by personal upbringing. Just
because we find something acceptable or aberrant doesn't mean the rest of
the world views it that way.

Speaking of views:

Succubus Megan lamented:
"So I don't want to be a sheep. And I want my own opinion. But I really
don't know which side I'm on, because both sides seem like the right side."

This comes down to personal education. Go to teach-in's, look on the
internet for alternative news sources. Educate yourself on the facts, all
the facts. I truly respect Roxanne because she has educated herself, at
least to some degree, on the subject. She is willing to back up her values
with action and intelligent debate. I may not agree with her view, but I
surely respect her for trying to come to it fairly.

All I know is that I fear for myself for my thoughts and words. I fear for
my life at times, because I am practicing my right as an American citizen
(since 1614, Jamestown, VA). America, as I have learned, never creates fear
in its citizens for practicing free speech. But now (because of that fine
old Patriot Act), I find myself having to consider going into hiding in a
commune or out of country. I won't ever leave the US (I would die first),
but it truly bothers me that I have to consider it. My college just issued
a new "demonstration" requirement that would confine demonstrations for
Peace to a small, unoccupied area of campus, while allowing "Pro-government
rallies" at all areas of campus. What country is this?

Lastly, when I hear of "Marines lamenting the loss of Comrades", I am put in
mind if the Soviet Union.

Educate yourself. Read all three thousand pages of the Patriot Act. Read
the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Read about the Cold War and the
Rise of the Soviet Empire. You might be surprised how much in common Bush
and Lenin had. Study political science and discover what Fascism is.
Educate yourself.  And decide who makes you feel more secure for the future;
those who want to conquer the world and make everyone be like Americans; or
those who accept everyone for what they are and what they believe, with the
knowledge that the sharing of beliefs makes everyone on Earth whole?

Mostly, just Educate yourself. Even if you think you know it all, educate
yourself.
Fairy Blessings,
Bethey
I'm OK when Everything's not OK
cause it's the Fairies Revenge they say
And I have always been a Fairy.

Howdy everybody! :) not much to say.. so on with the replies!

Simon said of his worrying about his parents: "Tell me it's just me being
more paranoid than usual."
it's just you being more paranoid than usual. *hug* we all hope
everything turns out okay. :)

Roxanne said: "I'm tired and worn out with this debate. Wars are events
that can never be agreed upon."
yes, and unfortunately, people will lose their heads and
sometimes wreck friendships over it. I really hate that.

Winterlion, my condolences to you and your family about your
grandmother.. *hug*

YAY BETHEY!! congrats on making the Dean's list! woohoo! get a pic taken
with him! :D

happy birthday to Jim and Mandy! :) hope it was good! :)

Bethey made a good analogy of Bush and Iraq and chess/poker. I liked it..
a lot. can't really say much more about it, cuz I can't really think of
something other than what she already said, but.. I really dug it. ^^

John Bragazzi mentioned his Quaker roots.. very very kewl. tell us a
little bit about it. I, for one, only know very little about it at all,
and am VERY curious. :)

Megan, your feelings on being pro/anti war.. I can relate. it's tough to
talk war talk with my bf because he ALWAYS puts me on the spot.

Jim talked about his Tori concert m&g experience.. sounds fun.. :) did
you say anything to her or did you *just* wave to her (and most
importantly did she see you??) or what? Also.. here's hoping that your
daughter Judy gets well.. FAST.

Brad, three things: 1: what's "earlybird"? 2: if you feel RDTRN has
outgrown its use in society, why don't you unsubscribe before you get
sucked into our collapse? and 3: grow up. PLEASE. there's no need to be
immature.

Jessica said she had a blast in Canada.. did ya take pics???? PLEASE
SHOW! yay!! :)

and on that note.. *think positive thoughts, think positive thoughts..*
my parents just got back from grocery shopping and in the midst of all
the groceries (YAY, FOOD!) I spotted two little pretty dresses..
obviously for my niece Bailey Anne. :) happy thoughts indeed. :D

SO, on that note.. *mwah!* good night, everybody! :D

You're kidding right? People bash Christrianity all the time here and
you're getting all twisted about my opinion of the Prophet Muhammad? It
is my opinion. One that I base on alot of historical reading on Islam
(part of my religious education as a child and a teenager).

I also think that Islam is inheritantly good...as in: It was a good idea
ONCE. But it is extremely outdated. And because it cannot adapt to
change, it is in a losing struggle with modernism.

I have read ALL of Karen Armstrong's books; they are really great.

Subject: Jim in Bold

[this is something i posted in my journal...i thought it might be of
interest to some of you. for those of you in the philadelphia area, there
will also be a screening of Jim in Bold at the Kimmel Center on May 2.]

I knew this kid in high school. His name was Jim. I didn't know him all that
well, but he was an artist, a beautiful painter, and so I knew him from an
admiring distance, watching him across the art room. When I was a junior in
high school, he killed himself. In the newspaper coverage that appeared in
the following days and weeks, I learned that he had gotten a lot of crap
from kids in my high school and in the community in general. Although I
hadn't heard about it firsthand, I wasn't really surprised by this. I
remember how brutal Cedar Crest High School was for those who didn't fit the
mold

I only have a couple of distinct memories of Jim: one of his paintings, an
angel, in blue and yellow. I remember him working on it. I also remember
taking an art field trip to the Wyeth Museum in Chaddsford and we stopped at
the rest stop on the turnpike and got ice cream, and then we laughed when
Jim fell asleep on the way back with my mouth gaping open. I just remember
him being so soft and gentle and sweet.

I remember going to the memorial service with Alexis. It was a last minute
decision. In one of those bizarre small-town twists, his father is my family
doctor. I remember Dr. Wheeler being there, along with Jim's numerous
brothers and sisters, all blonde, ranging from high school to kindergarden.
His paintings were displayed. All the kids from high school were there. My
high school art teachers were there, and Mrs. Miller was crying.

I don't even remember the memorial service itself, just standing outside on
the porch of the funeral home with some kids from school. I remember that we
talked softly, and we kept making jokes and smiling at the slight
ridiculousness of it all. Like this wasn't supposed to happen. He had just
graduated high school the last year. I think we still thought we were
immortal.

My mom called me yesterday afternoon and told there's been a documentary
made about Jim, focusing on homophobia and teenagers. It's called Jim in
Bold (http://www.jiminbold.com), after one of his poems. It's being produced
by PBS and MTV, and will be shown on both of those networks. I did a little
research on the web, and I actually found a Citypaper article
(http://www.citypaper.net/articles/042398/I.shtml) about him from 1998, in
conjunction with a panel going on during Pridefest that year. There's a
screening of it at Lebanon Valley College on Wednesday. So I'm going to go.

It's so strange how a piece of my history has come back to me like this. I
guess you have to ask yourself...what kind of world do we live in - and what
kind of town did I grow up in - that made a young man hate himself so much
he decided to end his life.

-bethany

Okay I'm back from spring break and happy to be called scum by Brad. :/
Cyndi, thanks for your little notes for me! they were very nice. i shall
write some signs of spring notes in a moment but first! my cartilage: yeah
it still hurts like assness. it especially hurts when I'm lying down and
need to turn over (i'm a tosser turner when I sleep) or when I need to get
up from a lying down position. thank you for asking. i just have to sit
around and let it stop hurting. well, I mean WAIT. i can't just sit and do
nothing. i take lots of advil daily and weekly.

ok, more signs of spring that are pertinent to my life:
1. having it be 80 in the bay area and then coming back to oregon from
spring break and it's 55 and i am wearing a sweater :/
2. the flowers are still blooming!! :)
3. spending hundreds of dollars on books and waiting in long lines at the
bookstore
4. your friends FINALLY getting laid and telling everyone
5. starting spring term and telling everyone how fucking amazing spring
break was!

oh and cyndi: when i was in high school a lot of my friends were into tori
but i didn't get into her until winter of 1996 when i bought LE and then
quickly bought the other cds. i thought she was a freak at first...yeah she
still is but she can kick my ass because she knows what a C minor versus a D
flat is and I could never tell anyone.

YAY! chicago won best picture!!! and michael moore won best documentary and
who gives a shit how people feel about his speech. he is amazing. i watched
him win on mute because there was a Canucks game on at the same time. hockey
takes priority in canada: the greatest country ever.

No I would not go and fight in this war. This is my mentality on any
soldiers: good for them because I wouldn't do it. I would not ever ever die
for my country. i think this might qualify as being a *bad* american but i
don't care. so, yay for people that ARE willing to do it. this guy in my
house who is in the army actually VOLUNTEERED but they said he's not ready
yet. yay. last night at dinner a few of my friends were discussing the rare
possibility of there being a national draft again. so we pretended and a few
of the girls were like "i'd get pregnant ASAP." one of my roommates stupidly
said "well, they wouldn't draft women. someone needs to stay home." why the
fuck WOULDN'T they draft women?!? hello, sex discrimination. i wonder if
being in college would disqualify you. or my bad eyesight. or i could get
pregant, god forbid.

beth, i really agree with you about bowling for colombine being the best
movie of the year. i loved it so much I saw it twice. i saw chicago three
times too. i really want to see bend it like beckham but i doubt it'll come
here.

and all that jazz,

I've downloaded Matt's Sultry Groove mix of Baker Baker before..
I burned it to CD tho, but.. yeah.. and the Golgotha mix of Crucify--the
title alone looks very familiar.. tho I'm not so sure of the Ode to Tori
one....

Subject: personal, please do this for me

Hi guys, this is very near to my heart because I have several friends
working on this and I've spent time on it as well.. This is not a
"pre-packaged" forward. I'm sitting down and writing this message to
you myself.

I'll offer two versions: the quick one (containing only the link) for
folks in a hurry, and the longer version for those who have a minute
to read more details.

     ---------------------

The short quick version: visit http://www.savesallysbunnies.com

     ---------------------

The personal explanatory version:

There is a petition drive currently underway to try to save a rabbit
rescue and sanctuary in Great Britain known as "Sally's Bunnies".
Apparently the town council has deemed the amount of vehicle traffic
to and from the facility be a nuisance. (Photos on Sally's site --
accessible at the photos link included below -- show that the problem
is not the sanctuary, but the vast number of cars her own neighbors
keep ... the very same people who filed the complaint about the
traffic "caused by" the sanctuary. The photos speak for themselves.)

About 100 bunnies stand to be immediately euthanized unless something
can be done. The bunnies at the sanctuary are ones that have been
horribly abused and cannot be placed in outside homes because of the
intense care they need. Many are blind or missing limbs. They have
nowhere else to go, and Sally has devoted her life to helping these
rabbits. You can see photos of some of the buns and the sanctuary
here:

        http://www.savesallysbunnies.com/photos.html

What an amazing place, and what lucky buns to have had this wonderful
woman come into their lives!

The petition is web-based, which means that duplicate signatures will
not appear and the petition can be printed out and mailed in. Unlike
e-mail petitions, web-based petitions are effective. Constance, a
friend of mine and my bunny nanny -- yeah, my bunnies have a nanny
<heh> -- has been working closely with Sally's Bunnies trying to get
the word out, and she tells me that everyone getting involved and
signing the petition is making a HUGE difference. But they need more
signatures.

So please, it's all I want for Easter ... take a quick moment to pop
over and add your name for me. It will make me soooo happy! Time is
running out:

(Feel free to forward this message on to friends and family.)

For all of you who take a moment to do this, thank you so much. It
means a great deal to me. :)
