I went to see "raising victor vargas" today. damn good flick. it's
beautiful. i love movies that make you want to live in someone else's life
just to observe them or be them. bend it like beckham made me want to be a
british chick in england, living and breathing soccer with a damn hot soccer
coach but this movie was more broad. it's shitty though that it's rated R,
hence that most teenagers won't be able to see it or god forbid, might be
more interested in watching such crap as "how to deal" or "legally blonde
2." i might admit cosmo is the bible when i'm drunk but i don't pay to see
shit like that. there are so many awful movies out right now.

i went to toriamos.com to vote. maybe it's me but most of those songs don't
do anything for me. nothing jumped out at me. i thought about suede but
voted for muhammed my friend instead. blood roses would have been third. i
was actually looking at tori bootlegs today at cd world.

it's too fucking hot. i want snow. or vanilla bean ice cream.

oh god i have some.

Absolutely. My father died suddenly (lay down for a nap and never woke up)
, and people said how difficult it must have been for my mother and me. We
said, no, it would have been difficult to see him go slowly, losing
physical and/or mental capacity over time. I think sudden is the way to
go.

I wonder how they define "frequently".

Definitions are very important, like the recent article in Time or Newsweek
about how many "sexless" marriages there are, because everybody is so
stressed and overworked and so on, and they define "sexless" as "no more
than 10 times a year" whereas I (simple-minded as I am) would assume
"sexless" means "no sex."

> what books has everyone been reading?

I've been re-reading the Amber books by Roger Zelazny. Since seeing the
first two Lord of the Rings movies, I've been imagining how the Amber books
could be filmed. Well, Lord of Light would be better, but it would be
difficult to make a movie where the main characters change bodies all the
time. How could you do it, have three or four actors play each major part?
I don't think that would work. (or would it?)

Actually, This Immortal would make a terrific movie.

But of course, the LoTR movies are a rare achievement. Most likely if any
of these books were filmed, it would be badly done, and I'd rather have no
movies than bad ones of books I really like.

As B/4,

John

Subject: Silence

As I sit here composing this article I am looking at a cover of Physics
Today. It shows a composite of satellite photos of the entire earth taken
at night. All the lights in the world can be seen in one photo. The array
of lights blankets the earth. Advance man apparently hates darkness. An
example of this is the woods behind my house that was silent and dark.
They put a new subdivision behind us (the invasion of the rich people) and
the darkness is lost in streetlights and the sound of speeding cars can be
heard. Civilization has taken over the woods.

There seems to be a sinister plot in civilized world to eliminate silence.
I did an article the first of this year on pathways and how they are formed
by exposure to music. The record companies require pathways to be formed
from our hearing to our emotional part of our brain. Once these pathways
are formed we go through that wondrous irrational act of buying a CD. To
form the pathways we need exposure to the new music. This comes at us
though radio and TV. MTV and VH1 exist to form these pathways. We watch
video countdowns shows. The videos are commercials for the artist and
record companies and these are surrounded by commercials for products. So
we get a double shotgun blast of pathways. This has been going on for years
and is nothing new.

Recently something new is going on. Hard Rock CafÈ made a mint by making
the music the dominant theme in their restaurants and providing another
avenue to form pathways. This concept is spreading now to supermarkets,
restaurants, and malls. They now offer continuous exposure to music. In
Las Vegas, NV they are playing music on the streets. It is difficult to
find a place where there is no music.

I am defining "elevator music" as music played in a public location where
the listener has no control over the selection. The music in the
restaurants, malls, supermarkets is elevator music. My friend Kandi at
Barnes and Nobel is the manager of their record department. She controls
the elevator music at the store. (Thankfully for me she is a Toriphile like
me and good music is provided.) Many time she just goes home and generates
an environment of silence just for some piece of mind and an escape from
elevator music. I was in the local mall a few weeks ago and I realized that
they were playing Tori. Good grief! 10 years ago Tori sang on how she
hates elevator music and now she is elevator music.

The record companies are trying to reclaim the glory of 70's when everyone
in the business made millions. Whenever that wondrous moment occurred, the
baby boomers bought an LP and no other alternatives were available. Napster
came along and the millions disappeared. The record companies destroyed
Napster and now are trying to destroy all Internet exchanges of copyrighted
material. The philosophy today is: "Before you download copyrighted
material, do a search on legal aid!" Lawsuits seem to be flying. If you
like one song, it is a package deal and you have to purchase an entire album
for $15.00. That wondrous moment can be rather expensive.

The expansion of elevator will continue. The technology exists to spread
elevator music everywhere. I can see where in a nightmarish future they
will be dropping solar powered broadcaster into the forest, the desert, and
the ocean and there will be no silence left on the earth. Wearing ear
protection will be illegal. Still people will find silence and the ultimate
goal will be implants in the ears of the entire population. People will
never experience silence. Elevator music will dominate the world. With the
record companies taking absolute over the exchange of copyrighted material,
they too will dominate the world. Mankind will live in this surreal matrix
driven by elevator music. Someday in the distant future a revolution will
take place against elevator music. Their rallying song will be "Silent All
These Years" and really deep thoughts will return to civilization.

I think I am watching too much of the Science Fiction channel.

Have to end. Jim Mathers

Footnote:

Judy is getting better. The cancer seems to be under control but she had a
blood clot in her lungs. My granddaughter Morgan is fine and turning over
now. I am off to Texas and New Mexico for a convention and vacation. Also
I plan to see Tori in Cleveland August 16. Waiting till 2005 to see Tori
again seems like infinity! Anyone else from RDT going to the Cleveland
show.

I was at a Chinese restaurant today and told the waitress she has superhuman
powers. First she has superhuman strength lifting one ton soup. Second,
she has mental kinetic powers where she can make an egg roll.

In a complete act of stupidity today, I was in the basement gymnasium cum
furniture storage area at work today. There was a punch dummy thing so when
I saw it, I couldn't help but invoke my manager's name and punch it. The
first one was fine, it was a short, sharp jab that felt so satisfying. The
second punch thrown was a looping haymaker and the instant I did it I
regretted it instantly as I sprained my wrist. I didn't even try to fill
out a first aid incident report on that one - how do you explain it, even
if it was a work related injury?

Last Thursday I saw Veruca Salt play in Sydney. It's the first time they've
toured here since '97 and I was a bit apprehensive about what they'd be
like since Nina Gordon split and turned herself into a pop princess. Let's
just say I was pleasantly surprised. Even got a couple of autographs after
the show. I think the only reason they toured here was because of a small
group of fans who pestered the record company to release their last album,
Resolver here which was over two years after the U.S. release.

Funny how we were talking about the Purple one recently. I read on the
weekend how Prince can't find a label for his new album, News, and is
trying to do a deal with amazon to release it web only. How the mighty have
fallen.

Jessica wrote in #1837...
>and then brian says something about me being hot-assed in jeans and the

I'm still trying to work the animal lube into that, or maybe that's how you
get into those ultra-tight jeans that look so fine.

John said on Heaven and Hell:
>Unless you're referring to the Who song (which I love), not me.

One of Mr. Entwistle's best. Since he's departed this mortal coil, maybe we
should ask him what it's like. Seance anyone? Or at least channel his bass
playing abilities through me.

Jessica again:
>Subject: masturbation and suicide

I almost thought we were going to have a discussion on Michael Hutchence then.

>I was reading today on yahoo! that australian researchers discovered that
>men between the ages of 20 and 50 who masturbate frequently are at a lower
>risk of developing prostate cancer which I think is one of the leading
>killers of men in this country. anyway, keep masturbating constantly.

I'd rather be given a hand. Can you help me out? Like I said at the top,
I'm down a hand at the moment. I guess it's like a car, you've got to keep
the parts lubricated and in good working order. Clean the pipes out
occasionally. Getting serviced via jiggy jig would be more pleasant. Does
this mean I can claim the cost of a prostitute on health insurance now?

Somehow it doesn't surprise me that research was done by a bunch of
Aussies. I can just imagine a bunch of scientists around a table playing
Soggy Sao. Speaking of which, where's Julio?

Hope your friend can get it together and find something that works.

Brian
