Hello Tori Fans!

Tori has opened her back catalog to release her first ever compilation
entitled Tales of a Librarian on November 18. This collection is a
2-Disk CD/DVD compilation that Tori describes as her musical
"autobiography." The album features 20 songs that document a career
spanning over a decade. Tori has personally revisited and reconditioned
the original material to offer a new perspective on some of her most
beloved songs.

In addition, Tales of a Librarian will include a pair of brand-new
songs as well as newly recorded renditions of two ultra-rare B-sides. A
bonus DVD features songs recorded live during sound check of the final
show of Tori's summer 2003 North American tour

Subject: There's something about "Mary"

So I've listened to AOL First Listen of Tori's re-recording of her wonderful
B-side "Mary".

And I'm seriously on the fence.

No, actually I dislike it, so I'm not exactly on the fence.

Mind you I was never absolutely in love with this song, but it had it's
really lovely moments. It was also pretty badly produced in its original
recording, so I hoped the new version would take away a little of that
studio tackiness and give it more space.

Instead, while it got a much desired thicker texture, it lost its cocky
lightness that made the song so sweet.
The new version features an omnipresent strumming acoustic guitar which
annoys me, but that's not a big peeve, I just might be used to the last
version, BUT the way Tori sings... oh god.... in my most humble - she ruins
the phrasing. She stretches the words and notes, moves the accents, moves
outside of the original words' rythm - it is something quite usual for
artists who have sung a certain song a zillion times so they allow
themselves some vocal freedom with the content,- it's often heard in
concert. But in this particular recording it ruins some of the song's
*great* moments.

The one I am particularily sad about is the place where at the end of the
chorus, during the lyric "...Even the wind..." there was a gorgeous
two-voice harmony that sent shivers up your spine. In the "improved" version
the lead vocal and the second voice are not in unison anymore - they split,
first one goes one way, the second the other and it stretches so the
harmony's all gone.
She changed the melody in chorus. Whatever. She took away the moments of
silence or the whisper, which made the song ROCK - through contrast.
Whatever.
I was never blindly devoted to specific versions of songs. But. This song
became...lazy. It's stretched about, it feels too slow and lumpy, "it don't
bounce!". Listen to the "nay, nay, nay" part. HELLO! Tori, what is that?

I was pretty upset, and my basic, rather judgemental remarks would include:
Tori,
1) less is more
2) there already is one Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac. And I love them too.
But please, don't try to make their records for them, they're fine on their
own.
3) if you wanna switch to a guitar, don't just hide the piano somewhere
under ten layers of studio tracks, chuck it out altogether.

I'm clearly over-reacting here. But there's still things I like about the
new version. I like the drums better. and ---
***ONE THING I LOVE: Beene's backing vocals. Perfect.***

rant over.
I'm still buying "Tales of the Librarian" mind you. I'm more that curious
what she DID to the rest of the songs, although the possibility that I will
be left weaping on the floor is less abstract than I thought.
Gotta love people who are full of surprises, Tor... siiigh.

This is Atlantic's deal, not Epic's. This is what Tori had
to agree to to get out of Atlantic. This is the usual speel
record companies do when artists leave. Being that this is
Atlantic Records, I'm not surprised.

Linda...Brian...Megan....THANK YOU!

reading your posts meant lots...and no, i don't care if you think you're
butting into my personal life. i posted that for a reason. well, i wanted to
vent but also let my anger be known. my friends helped me feel better. just
an update: my friend who was pretty suicidal that night is doing a lot
better. she took a week off school to get her shit together and get caught
up. her fiancee proposed to her. her counselor is helping her work through
her drug problem but they are more focused at the moment on her sexual
assault. she isn't pressing charges and that's her own choice. anyway...i
saw her on saturday at her engagement party and she seemed a lot happier.
she's had a really difficult year.

anyway...thanks again...love you all.

Subject: Peace Party Review

Greetings All!

The Peace Party occurred the evening of October 17 and a good time was had
by all. It wasn't as well attended as I hoped (I won't even guess a number,
under 20), but seeing all the difficulties proceeding it, I deem it an
outright success for having happened at all. The sound and lighting were
excellent, thanks to the skilled hands at the college. I can't wait to hear
the recording (yes, "Nefrit El-Or: Live from Cedar Crest College" will be
made as a fund-raiser).

Nefrit and her drummer Dave arrived around 2:30 in the afternoon. It's been
at least 4 years since I've seen that girl and she looked so Good! Last
time I saw her, she had very short hair and now it's near her waist (she'll
never forgive me for showing the old pics of her to Dave). I loved Dave,
because he walked in and immediately started to read my walls, something NO
ONE ever does, to my great disappointment. For those who've never seen my
place, my walls are plastered with artwork and cartoons and sayings (as is
my refrigerator). Dave just plopped down and started reading. I fed them,
and Dave took a nap and Nefrit and I got to talk for a while. It's amazing
that our lives seem to be going down the same road and we are sort of in the
same place right now, only in different fields. We both are heavily into
spiritualism now and I look forward to sharing more thoughts with her now
that we've reconnected. The only bad thing is that she admitted that she
was sick with what might have been a sinus infection that she had woken up
with. She was running a fever and her throat really hurt, but what a
trooper, she never thought once about canceling. I told her that she was to
do only what she could, and that live music is such a treat to feel free to
just jam out with the band.

We got to the college around 6, just as the rain was setting in. I told
Nefrit the stale joke about if you don't like the weather in Pennsylvania,
just wait a minute. We met up with some wonderful students who had offered
to buy dinner in the cafeteria for the three of us. Nefrit got the Vegan
meal and seemed pleased with it (although we both ended up with "Cedar Crest
Stomach" later on). Then it was time for set-up and I went to go change. I
figured everyone would expect me to show in my hippie-dippy clothes, so I
decided to shock them. I went "New York Sophisticate", with black mini,
stockings and heels. I sort of enjoyed the second looks I received from
people who are used to seeing me. Trust me, it ain't bad being 42 and a
grandmother! :)

Nefrit started her first set alone, as the bass player was going to be late.
Despite her claim to be sick, she rocked! I've never heard her live, and I
was blown away. She has a golden voice like honey spiced up with cayenne
pepper; her guitar playing is amazing; and the lady knows how to Move! I
was simply mesmerized by her. After a few songs, Dave came up and started
working the drums and the show improved even more. He does simply wonderful
things to cymbals, and watching Nefrit loosen up to the beat was grand. I
can't tell you how long her first set was because I was in some sort of
zone. Dave had grabbed his cell phone and left the room, then came and got
me to direct Matt (the bass player) to the building. He'd been circling
campus for 10 minutes, but no one heard the phone over the music. I told
Nefrit to take a break (she was very flushed and I was a bit concerned)
while Matt set up.

I really liked Matt, who sort of looks like what I think a bass player
should (dreadlocks, really skinny). He had a delightful spirit that just
shone out him from the first moment. Nefrit has surrounded herself with two
very special men who will help her be the success that she is destined to
be. And when he started playing with Nefrit and Dave, the place caught
fire. The three of them are so tight, not only musically, but personally.
The three way looks between them just communicated so much, made them so in
tune with each other. And they were have a freakin' blast up there. Two of
the songs she did in her first set she redid with Matt and Dave and wow!
What were good songs turned into asskickers! Especially one she NEEDS to
Record (immediately!) called "Fine Line". One of the lines that just
grabbed me is "There's a fine line between weapons and weapons of Mass
Destruction". (did I mention she is political? The drum has a "Peace"
sticker in English, Hebrew and Arabic; as well as an American Flag with
"sold" written across it) They rocked the house for 45 minutes until Nefrit
was burning out (well, too burned to play for 3 people!). It was such a
good concert and I was glad to see several people had picked up her CD/Demo,
as well as sign up for her mailing list.

Afterward, both she and Dave mentioned the theater in the building, and how
they might like to do a show there. So I'm thinking for Spring to do a real
concert (and hopefully be able to advertise it sooner than a day before). A
reporter from the school paper did a good interview with her, so people will
be aware of her next time. And once people start hearing "Live from Cedar
Crest", we may have to sell tickets! ;) I'm just so grateful that she came
all the way here, being so sick, and did such an awesome show for free, that
I want her to come again when perhaps it might be more rewarding (like
having an audience). They all left for home that night, but Nefrit and I
were able to talk a bit while she was packing up. One of these days, I need
to just sit and pick brains with her for hours. I learn so much from her,
and I think I teach her a thing or two also.

It was a wonderful Peace Party. My thanks to all who helped, attended, or
sent good thoughts my way. You all made it the success that it was. Here
is to bigger and better successes in the future!

Peace in our Lifetime,
Bethey
