I've been asked to forward along an e-mail to the list by someone who
hasn't been around here for years. She's a Hotmail user (and a hottie to
boot) who gets bounced by sending in HTML. If any Hotmail users could
describe exactly where the setting for plain text only is, it would help
greatly. I did have a Hotmail account for a while but I never used it. That
didn't stop me receiving about 70 spam messages a week. I even filtered out
everything but they still got through.
Anyway, funny I mentioned that virus that masqueraded as a Microsoft patch
recently as I received it from a friend yesterday and I must say it looked
very official and authentic.
But enough of me, this isn't my show and if anybody ever wants to grease me
up like this, I'll be happy to forward your messages along to the list,
among other things.

Eew, I just quoted a Staind song. That's not good.
So I'm just checking my email for the first time in a good long time and
what do I see! Tori's got a rash course edition in her music coming
out! And DVD! Just in time for me to catch up with the times and finally
get my DVD player out of layaway. Woo-hoo. So I decided to mosey on down
to the ol' mailing list and see what's up, who is still here, what's the
hot issues of the day. And that brings me to.....
Mr. Cooper, who I do adore, but apparently computers I am typing on do
not. I swear to the Goddess AND the Fairies, I tried FIVE TIMES to reply
to your last email, and every time the computer I was using would crash, or
I would barely breathe on some part of the mouse and it would click me off
my freshly composed letter and onto somehthing completely irrelevant. My
friend Joe's mouse is the most sensitive I have ever encountered. So I
just decided it wasn't meant for me to reply to you just yet-maybe a
general reply to a nice, safe mailing list will be permitted. We shall
see. I hope things are well with you and good luck with the red headed
girl. How Charlie Brown of you!
In other computer related news, I am finally getting one of my own! Oh
happy day! That and a DVD player...I just might exploded with all this
technological gagetry around. Out of the dark ages and into the
future! How terribly exciting for me/potentially horrible for all of you
RDTRNers who will get to read my rambling!
As for drug users and all...addicts *are* disgustingly selfish. That's
something addiction demands of you. And they will pretend to be your
friend, they will do just about anything for just about anyone if it means
they get to use. So here's my advice, not much different from everyone
else's-stay away! I kinda came into the ass end of this discussion, so I
don't know if this is an apartment or dorm room sitch or what...but hang
around with addicts long enough and your valuables could end up missing,
and all manner of people will think it's okay to do anything they want in
your room, and the next thing you know there's a meth lab on your
bed. Okay, maybe not that extreme, but definately try to distance yourself
from these people. Let them know you will be there for them if they decide
to straighten out (if you truly care for them), but don't let them
manipulate you because that's exactly what they are doing. I should know,
I used! to be one, but have recently gotten sober for the first time in oh,
say, ten years.
Oh, wow, this got really long, really fast.
Well, fare well for now, but you haven't heard the last of me! Mwa-ha-ha-ha!!!
Ann-Meredith
who still has no sig or kickass quote, but maybe will soon!

Subject: songs about verbiage
Gabriela said:
"I was pretty upset, and my basic, rather judgemental remarks would
include:"
(regarding Mary) i kind of mostly agree. your set of complaints extends to
most of Tori's live shows and also to Ani DiFranco. It's the main reason I
don't really listen to Ani anymore (i just sold off some of her more recent
albums, and I don't think i'm actually going to ever regret it). I mean,
c'mon. just quit the dilly dallying around and fucking sing. i've seen this
happen to a handful of artists besides Tori and Ani: once they've achieved
critical success and have a loyal fanbase that will salivate wherever they
go, they seem to forget a basic thing: how to write and perform a good song.
they're too into "experimenting". I'm not asking them to be Britney Spears,
but in my opinion, less is more. i mean, how conducive is it when you go to
hear Tori in concert and you can't even understand what she's saying? it
doesn't matter to me, but what about the people there who perhaps don't know
every single word to every single song? I guess that's why i think LE will
always be a better album than Scarlet's Walk, and why Ani's first
self-titled album, such a gorgeous, spare, beautiful piece of work, will
always be better than the five albums she put out this year.
as for Tales of a Librarian: i will probably buy it. the dvd will probably
suck, but the selling point is it contains my favorite Tori song ever, which
she almost never performs (that would be Pretty Good Year). i'm still sore
about the rip off that was the Scarlet's Walk DVD, but geez, that wasn't
even Atlantic, it was Epic.
maybe big record labels DO suck. gee.
***
in the interests of starting a discussion, i was thinking about something
the other day.
i was in the studio listening to Mogwai's new album (which you should all
get, it's really good). in case you don't know, Mogwai is an instrumental
band, no singing (at least the albums i've listened to). i was listening to
it, really getting into it, when it occurred to me that this album would be
totally ruined if it had vocals. it was just great the way it is. which made
me start thinking about all the stuff we listen to on the radio, all the
popular music most people buy: it all has words. it was weird to think about
it that way, and made me wonder to what extent the music is being ignored in
favor of listening to the words. I mean, ideally, the two should blend
together seamlessly. but i'm such a verbal person, what I tend to gravitate
to is the words first, and usually the music second (though not always).
it just made me think how fucking trippy and amazing it might be if Tori did
an entirely instrumental album. I mean, how long has it been since we've
really heard or seen her fucking rip the piano apart like she used to? i'd
love to see her do that again.
so i guess my question(s) for discussion is: how do percieve most music that
you listen to? music first or lyrics first or both at the same time? does it
vary from artist to artists? if you hate the lyrics, but like the music, can
you look past that and still like the song (and vice versa)?
please reply. this list needs some life!
with that, she was gone.

Subject: yeah...
i think that i will be waiting to buy tales of a librarian. or i will just
use birthday money in december. i'd rather buy the new blink 182 cd, a
simple plan's cd and the linkin park cd/dvd. i like nearly all of the songs
on there ESPECIALLY mary....unless it sucks like i think roxanne said. so, i
want it but there are other cds i'd rather own and listen to constantly. and
it seems like kind of a ploy to get money also. ooh, cheap shot at tori.
and that's how jessica feels.

Tori, Macy Bring "Girl" Power
New compilation benefits Oxygen Media charity
Nettwerk America will release Oh! From the Girls on January 13th, a
fifteen-track compilation featuring unreleased live tracks from Macy
Gray and Tori Amos, and songs from Sarah McLachlan, Avril Lavigne and
Dido.
A portion of proceeds from the album will go to benefit Oxygen Media's
"Build Your Own Business" program, which since 2000 has helped provide
women with funding and equipment to start their own businesses. The
live tracks from Gray (who covers the Beatles' "Come Together") and
Amos were recorded during Oxygen Custom Concerts, a series of shows
that allow fans to vote in advance for the songs they would like
artists to perform.
Erin McKeown contributed the song "Slung-Lo" from this year's Grand.
"Musicians have an awful lot in common with small business owners,"
says McKeown. "While we wear a creative face for the outside world, to
succeed in the music business you've got to put in an enormous amount
of effort behind the scenes and get your hands dirty to understand how
it all works. The business world often seems like a gated community, a
mysterious place where it's hard to get a foot in the door...I am proud
to stand beside these other songwriters and offer our support for women
starting businesses."
The next Oxygen Custom Concert is scheduled for November 4th. Avril
Lavigne and Sarah McLachlan will perform in New York City and the show
will air on November 9th.
Track list for Oh! From the Girls:
Dido, "Thank You"
Macy Gray, "Come Together"
Stacie Orrico, "Stuck"
Sixpence None the Richer, "Don't Dream It's Over"
Avril Lavigne, "I'm With You"
Kathleen Edwards, "Six O'Clock News"
Tori Amos, "Cornflake Girl" (Live)
Aimee Mann, "Calling It Quits"
The Pretenders, "I'll Stand by You"
Sarah McLachlan, "Angel"
The Be Good Tanyas, "It's Not Happening"
Sarah Harmer, "Basement Apt"
Erin McKeown, "Slung-Lo"
Oh Susanna, "Right By Your Side"
Martina Sorbara, "Withered on the Vine"
