John wrote in digest 1867 regarding the Dalai Lama:
>One pointed out that the Lama presents a rather different set of opinions
>to his Western supporters than he proclaims to the faithful. For one
>thing, he condemns homosexuality, and oral and anal sex, but these
>opinions are softened or eliminated completely from his English-language
>writings

It's not surprising really considering he's the religious leader in exile
of an occupied country. He'd never get the same amount of support from the
West if his real thoughts were widely known.

Speaking of leaders, it's good to see Malaysia's leader, Dr. Mahathir is
finally retiring, especially after his outbursts of recent weeks. After
he's gone, we may be able to have normal relations with that country once
again.

Bigger leaders... George W. Bush was in town for a whirlwind visit last
week. I particularly noted an interview by an Australian journalist a few
days before his arrival. The question was along the lines of, "Since the
war in Iraq, your approval rating and Tony Blair's approval rating have
both gone down, but John Howard's has gone up. Why is that?" To which Bush
replied, "It must be his charisma!" I never figured Bush to have a sense of
humour, but I was laughing my arse off after that comment.

On to digest 1868... Roxanne, I haven't been paying attention to which
label Tori's new album is coming out on, but if it is Atlantic I wouldn't
be surprised either. I was never impressed by their marketing. They sure
knew how to screw Toriphiles for many years.

Jessica: you put it out there, it's going to get commented on whether you
want it or not, especially when it's such a big issue.

>just an update: my friend who was pretty suicidal that night is doing a

What a messed up situation. I hope the boyfriend didn't propose to her out
of pity after the coke business. It's not a good starting point when making
a commitment like that. If the counsellor was there for drug abuse before
the latest episode and she still took it, she's got serious problems,
especially since she knew she had suicidal tendencies when coming down.
Agreed the sexual assault business could be a mitigating factor, but
getting high was a purely selfish act.

She does need support, but the support she needs is better left to the
professionals. If she ever calls you again when high, call an ambulance for
her. If she has a shred of decency left in her, she'll be highly
embarrassed and won't do it again. If she continues to do it, then she's
best left well alone by you as she'll use you again and again given half a
chance. You can be a friend to her but when it comes to drugs, have nothing
to do with her and point her to a professional.

I've also got serious questions about the girls she was doing cocaine with,
if they knew of her suicidal tendencies and still let her use. If that's
the case, they're certainly not her friend and shouldn't be yours either.
The one that didn't apologise to you certainly isn't worth your time.
There's a fine line between drug use and drug abuse which seems to have
been crossed, but just make sure you're not the one being used. You're
obviously a great friend to have, so watch out they don't take advantage of
your better nature.

It's an incredibly awkward situation and I hope it works out well for all
concerned.

Brian

Subject: Lyrics or Music?

Bethany is trying to start something:
>>how do perceive most music that
you listen to? music first or lyrics first or both at the same time? does it
vary from artist to artists? if you hate the lyrics, but like the music, can
you look past that and still like the song (and vice versa)?<<

I've always been into lyrics first. I had no appreciation for music until I
got into Tori and started listening to what she was playing as well as what
she was saying. I finally understand classical music because of Tori. But
at any rate, the lyrics always are the first thing to really grab me in
loving a song. I'll start off listening to an album by reading the lyrics
the first run-through. If I don't have lyrics (like Nefrit's album), then I
listen over and over to decipher what is being said. I'm not always
successful, but get enough to understand a bit of the meaning.

If I hate the lyrics, it doesn't matter what the music is like...I won't
listen. If I love the lyrics, then the music rarely influences me to liking
or disliking it. Some songs just are kick ass good all the way around. If
it says something important, that's what I am looking for in music. Ear
candy is nice for desert, but I always want something a bit savory to chew
on. Like Tori's music.

I am getting "Tales..." because I get all of Tori's releases. But mostly
I'm getting it because I just entered the 21st century and got a DVD player,
so "Bonus DVD" is a selling point to me now. But I am waiting for "Moody
Blues at Red Rocks" and "The Wall - Berlin" to arrive to really test out my
new toy. For right now, it plays my CD-R's much nicer than my old stereo.
;)

I'm busy planning another teach-in, so I'll say bye for now.

Bye for Now. ;)

Subject: Where to Find "Remix" of Tori Teen Spirit

Hi,

Does anyone know where I can find the "Remix" of Tori's version of "Smells
Like Teen Spirt".

I have the B-Side Version that has just Tori and her Piano from back in
1992... However I recently heard a cool "Remix" version that also featured
some drum beats and synth.. I would love to buy this if it is available
anywhere..

If ANYONE knows what this is.. Please let me know

Thanks,

Peter

This is an age-old thought for me. I always gravitate to words/lyrics, but I
suspect that has a little bit to do with the fact that I am not a musician,
but I can sing and write, so I relate well to that aspect of music. On the
other hand, many times you can take away the melody and instruments and
you're left with kind of a dumb set of words. Sometimes it's the combination
that really works best.

First time through an album, I'm not listening for words specifically.
Usually it takes a few times (5-6) before I'll start listening for lyrics,
though I am already humming along with the vocalist as soon as I can pick
out what s/he's going to sing next. Sometimes I can like a song and hate the
lyrics. I usually can't like the lyrics and hate the music, though. (I also
have a hard time when I like the lyrics and music, but hate the vocalist).

I think instrumental music is incredibly important; my imagination likes to
run wild with those kinds of pieces. I also like songs in other languages,
for somewhat similar reasons.

I have a friend who is synaesthetic - that is, he sees shapes and patterns
and colors in his mind when he listens to music. Because music is a visual
medium for him, he does not often notice lyrics -- words and vocals become
another instrument.

Beth

(about Mary)
" I mean, c'mon. just quit the dilly dallying around and fucking sing. i've
seen this
happen to a handful of artists besides Tori and Ani: once they've achieved
critical success and have a loyal fanbase that will salivate wherever they
go, they seem to forget a basic thing: how to write and perform a good song.
they're too into "experimenting".

Actually here I'd disagree with you. What pisses me off with Mary, as a
re-recorded song is perfectly fine by me in concert. I think that's why I
still love tori is that she manages to surprise me with her stuff, (mostly
in concert now, I must say, rather than on the last record. For example I
love the way she changed "Take To The Sky" on the last tour. I loved the
altered Crucify etc). But it's a double edged sword. You're either gonna
have a gem or a total embarrasment, however the great thing about a live
performance is that it comes and then it goes, and whether the experiments
were a success or a failure, you're still going home and you can put on the
original version. And with studio recordings, such as Mary, it is etched in
stone (sure, I can still go back to the old B-side, but the SINGLE now is
going to be much better known). So if it goes wrong - whoop-de-do.

Anyway, what pisses me off more is just the concert manner of stretching
lyrics beyond notes. It's not really making the words more difficult to
decypher at all. It's just a way of singing that is no good for a very
defined rythm. And Mary has one.

Subject: hello, puppy

I'm about to say something here that next to dissing Tori, would be
considered blasphemous. I just finished reading Neil Gaiman's "American
Gods" and quite frankly, it bored me. I didn't even find it to be all that
original. Okay, so I dearly loved "Neverwhere" the first and second time I
read it, but by the third time I thought even it was unoriginal. What made
me think that? Re-reading Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently books, in particular
"The Long Dark Tea-Time Of The Soul". Not only are their writing styles
very similar, but so is the theme. I also felt let down by "American Gods"
as I kept nodding off while reading it, where "Neverwhere" had me riveted.

In digest 1869, from Ann-Meredith c/o me...
>I hope things are well with you and good luck with the red headed
>girl. How Charlie Brown of you!

Good grief! I hadn't thought of it that way. Just don't call me Chuck. So
what colour is your hair these days?

The verbose Bethany asked:
>how do percieve most music that you listen to? music first or lyrics first
>or both at the same time? does it vary from artist to artists?

It varies from artist to artist depending on what their reputation is. If
they are known for what they say, I'll intently listen to the lyrics the
first few times. After that I'll probably listen to it as background music
to get a feel for the music itself. If it's an artist who's known for their
sonic ability or I've got no idea what to expect, it'll be the music first.

If in doubt, hear it out. You can always think about it later.

Brian
