Subject: bummer...

my 2 cents worth...

Wow, it really bums me out to hear that the new Tori release will be a
set of 'reworks' of her previous releases and b-sides. I was pretty
happy when I first heard about it - I thought it'd be nice to have a lot
of the older stuff in one release. The idea of Tori remaking things
makes me a little bit nervous. Certainly, it's her music to do with as
she wishes but her musical skill and judgement in the past few years has
been IMHO, questionable (see "Strange Little Girls" in general, esp.
'Heart of Gold').

Releasing a set like this with some rehashed old stuff and a couple of
token new songs, along with a little DVD thrown in to bump the price up
seems to be pretty typical with the Tori releases starting with UTP. I
used to seriously collect the Tori CD singles until I realized that they
were all remixes of the same songs, with maybe some different cover art
thrown in to give it the appearance of being something new. Honestly, I
had 3 or 4 different CD singles, all sold as being unique, that when you
compared them, had 1 song difference between them. I felt (feel) that
this was exploitative of her fans who were trying to collect as much of
her music as possible, just because they loved her.

Eh, I think that I probably have outgrown Tori, or, she has outgrown me,
not sure which. Between all of the 'I'm a mommy now, there is no other
purpose in life', the crass commercialism of her past several releases,
the movement away from her piano skills to pretty typical band-based
music, the Prada diaper bags, the forced quirkiness that her
once-endearing personality has turned into, etc. etc., I'm finding it
harder and harder to find something/anything in there that speaks to my
heart anymore.

It just makes me sad.

cheers-

Rochelle

>>The David Gilmour in concert is far better as is Roger's "In the Flesh"
DVD.
"The Wall in Berlin" was not worth the money whatsoever. Van Morrison is
painful to listen to, and the special guests distracting (although "The
Trial" was kickass with Ute Lemper (who is THE Weill/Brecht singer) and Tim
Curry. And it's not Pink Floyd.<<

I'm not a huge Pink Floyd fan. I'm just now discovering the magic of their
music. So "The Wall in Berlin" is absolutely amazing to me. I love Van's
take on "Comfortably Numb", Cyndi is unbelievable doing "Another Brick in
the Wall", the whole trial sequence is fricken amazing. And the kicker is
when they tear down the wall. I get tears in my eyes everytime I watch it.
It is as powerful as the footage from only a year before, when they tore
down the Berlin Wall. And Three Hundred Thousand People in the audience is
awe inspiring. I really love this DVD. The first time I played it (my
first DVD experience), my jaw gaped open and all I could think was "where
the hell have I been?" to have missed the outrageous sound quality available
in this medium.

I also got "Woodstock--The Director's Cut", but I haven't watched it yet.
I've been busy writing a paper that compares Zazen (a form of Zen
Meditation) to Eric Erickson's eight developmental stages of human growth.
It is totally mind-bending.

Hope you all Vote on Tuesday (or that you did vote if this comes out later).
It's not only a right...it's an obligation.

Subject: preguntas

Ah, so Bethany's big question:
>>how do percieve most music that you listen to? music
first or lyrics first or both at the same time? does
it vary from artist to artists? if you hate the
lyrics, but like the music, can you look past that and
still like the song (and vice versa)?<<

Very cool question.... this is something that I've
thought about on a very intangible level as I've
listened to a song for the first or second time, but
I've never really tried to put those thoughts into
words.

Under most circumstances, I think it's the the music
itself that grabs me first-- usually the way
everything flows together moreso than just focusing on
a specific guitar solo or the artist's voice. My
favorite songs tend to convey a lot of emotion, so if
the music and (if there are lyrics) the voice and the
words all blend together to evoke something powerful,
I'll be hooked instantly.

A fairly good example of this is Seven Nation Army, by
the White Stripes. I was totally obsessed with that
song from the second that I heard it. The combination
of that beat, the guitars, and that cool scratchy
voice had me totally hypnotized, so that all I could
think was, "This song is SO fucking great!"

It wasn't about the lyrics at first, even though
certain lines really popped out at me ("And I'm
bleeding, and I'm bleeding, and I'm bleeding right
before the lord; All the words are gonna bleed from me
and I will think no more").

That's the way that I suppose I became hooked on
Tori-- the synergy of her voice and the music was so
powerful, and individual lyrics would stand out and
I'd feel incredibly connected to them.

After I listen to a song more, it will become
increasingly about the lyrics. If I hate the lyrics
but like the music, the song will probably get its 15
minutes of fame in my brain, and then I'll tire of it.

On the other hand, if I really connect to the lyrics
but the music is just blah (and I give the song a
chance rather than just turning it off anytime it
comes on), then I can really come to love it. I think
this is why I'm such a hardcore Matchbox Twenty fan.
They're not that impressive musically, but I'm crazy
about their lyrics.

And Rob Thomas is hot. It may not be the crucial
factor to why I like MB20, but it doesn't hurt. Which
brings another question to mind:
Do a musician's looks matter?

I know it's nice to think that we'd all love Tori just
as much even if she wasn't a sexy little redhead, but,
um, I'll be the first to admit that I *love* having a
poster of her on my wall. The morning sun streaming
in and casting a soft light on her beautiful face...
mmmm. :)

So, while I'm not asking whether it's the sole purpose
for whether you like a musician, do looks still count
for something?

~Linda~

Subject: indies

Cyndi sed:
"yes, and maybe Tori should dump the major labels altogether and go
indie.. d'ya think it'd work? I'd like to see her do that if it means more
promotion--HER WAY."

don't know where, but i seem to recall that right after Tori signed to Epic
she released something explaining why she didn't choose to go with an
independent label. I don't remember what she said (i'd love if someone could
find a link to this, coz i don't have the time right now), but i imagine it
probably has something to do with Tori just being too big of an artist.
Independent labels are great, and I think everyone should support them as
much as possible (especially in light of this whole RIAA thing), but the
simple fact is most of them just don't have the capital to promote an artist
like Tori. Everything from recording an album, to promoting it, then
touring - i'm sure it costs a bundle (actually, does a record label pay for
all this? i assumed but i don't actually know). that's why, in my
experience, most of the independently signed artists I get into I hear about
via word of mouth, not necessarily from a media outlet.

i just really hate how Tori's being promoted by Epic. The suits seem to
think we're all a bunch of screaming 13 year old girls. I would like to
think that Tori had a hand in the DVD, in the website, in the (makes me want
to tear my hair out) mailing list, but i'm increasingly thinking she doesn't
because, well, she's smarter than that. and after all, she's a musician.
she'd probably rather be writing and performing than deal with all the extra
stuff.

huh....that John guy uses the word absolutely a lot, doesn't he? what a
weirdo. and he seems to agree with everything i say, which is highly
suspicious. hmm....i better start screening my calls.

ps. i'm obsessed with The Joshua Tree. I don't know why it took me so long
to get into that album. but i love the lyric below. all the colors: red,
black, white, gold. fabulous.
