I've decided to just ask for the Librarian cd for
Christmas. If I get it, great, if I don't, whatever.

I was listening to the radio the other day, and
apparently Mary is being pushed as a hot "new" single.
My town's radio station (which has a pretty
far-reaching signal and a lot of listeners) had it up
for the "survivor of the day" against some other
song-- every night, two songs are on the list, and
people have to call in and vote for which one they
want to hear. Mary lost by only a few votes, so I
didn't get to hear it played on the radio, but it
still got a ton of mentions throughout the evening
show.

Speaking of other hot "new" musical acts, Switchfoot
(one of my favorite bands-- primarily because of their
lyrics, since we just had that whole discussion) has
come out with their third album, and their single is
getting a good amount of radio time. Every time their
song is introduced, it's something like, "This great
*new* band is called Switchfoot....."

They were previously listed under Christian rock, but
they don't really mention religion much in their
lyrics. If anyone saw one of the recent South Park
episodes where Cartmen decided to form a Christian
rock band, Switchfoot pretty much does the opposite of
Cartman's band-- rather than changing lovesong lyrics
to be directed at Jesus, Switchfoot has lyrics that
are supposedly directed toward God, but could be
interpreted as a song meant for another person.

(I'm sitting here, knowing that there's a term for
this literary technique, and yet I can't think of it.
If someone else knows what it is, please tell me. I
have no brain.)

So I gave myself a 2nd degree burn the other day.
It's healing pretty well, but still kinda nasty.
Here's a picture of it, if you feel like being grossed
out (ignore my little sign-- that was a joke for one
of my friends)
http://www.photobucket.com/albums/1103/lindagyne/f93a9ac8.jpg

I'm talking about the burn partly as a warning,
because I spilled tea on myself while watching The
Next Joe Millionaire. My shirt was some sort of
rayon/polyester blend, and I think that it may have
worsened the outcome a lot. The tea had been boiled
on top of the stove, and sat out for about 5 minutes
before I even picked it up, so it's not like it was
freshly-boiled water that created that type of damage.
I think I'm blaming it on the shirt.

So, the lessons for the day are:
1. Be careful about what type of fabrics you wear--
synthetic fabrics might melt under heat and lead to
worse burning;
2. if you watch crappy shows like The Next Joe
Millionaire, bad things will happen.

I can prove #2 because the only other person that I
know of who watches that show just had an apartment
deal fall through after he already sold his apartment,
leaving him temporarily homeless.

Live, learn, love, and be careful with hot
beverages...
~Linda

Amos, Seal Crack 'Mona Lisa Smile'

Tori Amos, Seal, Alison Krauss and Celine Dion are among those contributing
to the soundtrack to the film "Mona Lisa Smile." Due Nov. 25 from Epic, the
collection features contemporary artists' renditions of songs from the
early-1950s, in step with the film's 1953 setting.

Seal's version of "Mona Lisa" opens the album, while Dion adds a run
through the standard "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered." Amos contributes
two remakes: "Murder, He Says" and "You Belong to Me."

Other tracks include Kelly Rowland's version of "I'm Beginning To See the
Light" and Krauss' rendition of "What'll I Do." The Trevor Horn Orchestra
reinterprets a pair as well -- "Sh Boom" and "Istanbul (Not
Constantinople)," popularized in recent years by They Might Be Giants.

Starring Julia Roberts, Kirsten Dunst, Julia Stiles, Maggie Gyllenhaal and
Marcia Gay Harden, "Mona Lisa Smile" opens Dec. 19 in U.S. theaters.

Here is the "Mona Lisa Smile" track list:

"Mona Lisa," Seal
"Murder, He Says," Tori Amos
"You Belong To Me," Tori Amos
"Secret Love," Mandy Moore
"I've Got the World on a String," Lisa Stansfield
"I'm Beginning To See the Light," Kelly Rowland
"Santa Baby," Macy Gray
"Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered," Celine Dion
"Besame Mucho," Chris Isaak
"What'll I Do," Alison Krauss
"Smile," Barbra Streisand
"Sh Boom," Trevor Horn Orchestra
"Istanbul (Not Constantinople)," Trevor Horn Orchestra

Subject: Reworking B-sides... and Why No DVD's??

>>In a message dated 11/7/2003 4:13:23 PM Eastern Standard Time,
rdtrn@torithoughts.org writes:
Wow, it really bums me out to hear that the new Tori release will be a
set of 'reworks' of her previous releases and b-sides. I was pretty
happy when I first heard about it - I thought it'd be nice to have a lot
of the older stuff in one release. The idea of Tori remaking things
makes me a little bit nervous.<<

The concept of Tori "Re-recording" he B-sides may have been a necessity... As
the "Warner Group" may not be so willing to release the rights to all of the
"Masters" for the original B-sides... Rather then pay them an EXORBITANT
amount of money to use the music recorded by Warner for an "Epic" or "Sony"
release... it may be more cost effective to just
"Rework" the old songs.... Plus it would give a reason for old fans like me,
that actually spent $100's to get all of the old import singles,... a "Reason"
to buy the new record.

Personally. As a Fan... I am disappointed that BOTH the Music Video DVD that
was slated to come out.. (It was going to have the later videos from Venus and
Back!!!!) and the Scarlett Sessions DVD was canceled...

My beef is Majors NOT releasing "Music Video" compilations because they want
to put all of their time and trouble in the new "Matrix" DVD.... Because they
will make more money from that DVD... Yet the DVD's I want to buy remain just
an Idea ... or a promotional item that will cost me an arm and a leg on
E-bay...

I don't want just TWO TRACKS on my bonus DVD for "Greatest Hits"... How about
a BUNCH of music videos.. or the Extended "Scarlett Sessions"... (It was
broadcast on the Trio network so I was able to at least enjoy some of it
though I
really want the REAL THING)

Anyway... Only Tori really knows the reasons for all of the "Re-Worked"
Recordings and Canceled DVD's.... I can only speculate and practice my typing
skills ;)
