Really Deep Quotes:
I awoke this morning with devout thanksgiving for my friends,
the old and the new. -- Ralph Waldo Emerson
As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the
highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by
them. -- John Fitzgerald Kennedy
Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot
today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a
little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at
least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful. -- Buddha
Courtesies of a small and trivial character are the ones which
strike deepest in the grateful and appreciating heart.
-- Henry Clay
Appreciation can make a day, even change a life. Your
willingness to put it into words is all that is necessary.
-- Margaret Cousins
Let's be grateful for those who give us happiness; they are the
charming gardeners who make our soul bloom. -- Marcel Proust
At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark
from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep
gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.
-- Albert Schweitzer
Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a
present and not giving it. -- William Arthur Ward
No matter where you are today, whatever country you live in, I
hope all of you are have "enough" and are thankful for everything
you have in your lives. I wish you and your families happiness,
comfort, peace, and song.
Hugs,
Violet

Subject: and then
Aaahhhh, the release of a new album. Nothing fills a digest more. If only
it wasn't mostly press releases. T-day isn't until December 1 Downunder,
but it's not as if I'm counting the days.
I did go on-line last week to check out pricing of "Librarian" to see if
there was any value in it. A CD only version will be released at regular
prices and the one with the DVD will be $5 more, so it's not exactly the
rip off I was fearing. Considering Christmas is coming up it might make a
nice stocking filler for someone who isn't completely into Tori (or is),
but it's still missing that "must have" factor.
If I was slightly more interested, I'd be wanting the release from
Silverchair, called "Live From Faraway Stables". It is... get this.. a 2 CD
*and* 2 DVD set of one of their concerts. The CDs stand alone as an audio
recording of this show and if you've got the time to park your butt in
front of a TV you can watch the same thing you've been hearing. What's the
price I hear you say? I've already seen it selling in a department store
for the price of a regular new release CD. That's 4 discs for the price of
1. Now is that value or what?
Both Tori and Silverchair are fulfilling their contracts to their previous
record companies, Atlantic and Sony. It's not hard to see the difference
here, in that one company is looking to generate as many sales as possible
while the other is just happy to fleece the few people who are going to
buy their product. If Altantic was to release a similar package, I'd be
running out the door with cash in hand and I'd be a very happy customer.
I did notice the artwork for the new album and it reminded me of a scene in
some crap movie. I think it was Shallow Hal, but anyway, this guy picks up
a demure redheaded librarian and returns to her place. The librarian turns
out to be a raging sex machine with her dominatrix granny in a secret room
out back. I think that scene scarred me for life where librarians are
concerned.
While on a musical note, there's a band somewhere in the neighbourhood who
play early 70's rock standards from artists like Cream, Jimi Hendrix and
Black Sabbath. Many a Saturday afternoon has gone by where I've heard songs
like "Foxy Lady" and "Paranoid" butchered. It's not that these guys are
bad. In fact, they sound reasonably talented but they just can't get the
timing right. It becomes patently obvious during the solos when the
guitarist and bassist seem to go off in their own directions then come
together for the next verse or major chord change. It's pretty hard to take
Paranoid after it's been played badly twenty times in a row.
John wrote in #1875:
>I gave up trying to decode the more difficult lyrics years ago. My
>ex-wife was a huge Yes fan, and I remember that she sat down once to
>figure out what one of their songs meant (their lyrics were very
>obscure). She did figure it out, the entire song did make sense, but she
>later said that it hadn't really been worth all the effort.
Same could be said for Tori. Just after the whole music/lyrics thread
started up, I was listening to "The Roaring Silence" by Manfred Mann's
Earth Band and couldn't help but think how nonsensical the lyrics were on
the album. They seemed to fit with the music however to create a complete
audio masterpiece. The album I have on vinyl has a bonus track that doesn't
exist on the CD which is "Spirit In The Night". Couple that with "Blinded
By The Light" and you can't help but think Bruce Springsteen was really
whacked out early in his career. This also ties in with what I've been
saying about covers, in that if you're going to do them, either play them
as they were done originally or turn them into something else completely,
like MMEB (and Tori) does.
no and then.

Brian posited:
> So I guess the question is, are
> there any truly unattractive women in music?
>
Before I actually respond to this question, I'd like to point out that,
with famous women much moreso than famous men, the actual, day-to-day,
just-out-of-bed, not-yet-wearing-makeup look causes a greater disparity
between the public face that women put on, and the private one that we
seldom, if ever, see. So the list of women that would be the answer to
this question is probably longer than anyone truly knows or
acknowledges.
That being said, there is a woman (I guess you can call her that now),
whose popularity I admit I don't understand, whom I consider extremely
unattractive. Talking strictly physical points, the only good part of
her is her legs. Every other part of her (eyes, face, hair, breasts)
is a major turn-off to me. Factor in the fact that she can't sing or
dance, and that she doesn't write her own music, I find no redeeming
quality in her. Could someone please explain Britney Spears's
popularity to me? I just don't get it.
