Hiya, folks! Thanks for all the happy birthdays and such! I went to the
liquor store... and saw my high school guidance counselor. Hehehe. And I
went out for Chinese food. Good times. Not drunk yet, nor do I think I
will be tonight, but that's ok. I'm still having fun.

Subject: "It all makes perfect sense..." (the Prophet Roger Waters)

I, on rare occasion, find something that touches my soul, my mind, my heart,
and I feel compelled to share it with you all. I hope at least one of you
will be inspired to allow it to touch you as well. My last recommend was
"My Ishmael" by Daniel Quinn (I still recommend it), and "The Wall in
Berlin" by Roger Waters. Well, I have discovered something else by Roger
than I am thrilled with. The album is "Amused to Death", which was released
15 years ago. You must get this, and listen closely to it. I'm prepared to
honor Roger with the same prophet status I give John Lennon.

"Can't you see, it all makes perfect sense;
expressed in dollars and cents,
pounds, shillings and pence"
says the "global anthem" near the beginning. It's about American and
British forces going to war, for no reason than it makes for good TV. Roger
denounces the Old Man who gets off on killing people, with "the bravery of
being out of range", shooting laser guided bombs (really great for righting
wrongs) from 3000 miles away. It's so fitting for what is going on, the
Pentagon brass making the decisions from DC, treating the troops so
disposably.

My pick for most awesome song has the worst 1 minute intro I've ever heard.
It's methodical mortar rounds shot..."BOOM...BOOM...BOOM" every 5 or so
seconds. But then it blends into the most awesome rock song. Let me write
out the full chorus for you:
"You don't have to be a Jew
To disapprove of murder
Tears burn my eyes
Muslim or Christian Mullah or Pope
Preacher or poet who was it wrote
Give any one species too much rope
And they'll fuck it up."

Prophet Roger!!! How did you know??? (Roger just sounds *wrong* for a
prophet somehow). The album concludes with the two songs that made me get
the album. "It's a Miracle" is about things that are miraculous, like a
Brazilian growing a tree, or a doctor saving a dying man for free. But one
line near the beginning is "Between the Tigress and Euphrates there's a
leisure center now". All I can picture is the Coalition Green Zone, in the
palace there. It's where the brass gets to take their R&R, while the lowly
fighting ranks get to go to Kuwait. A leisure center, with swimming and
tennis. In the "cradle of civilization". *sigh* I hear at the Iraqi site
of the Garden of Eden, it's all paved over, with a single olive tree
representing the garden. Joni was right, they paved paradise and put in a
parking lot.

The last song is the title song. It's about our television-bred,
consumer-centered society, turning on the news as just more entertainment.
At the end, aliens come to find us huddled around our TV screens, and
"...eliminating every other reason
For our sad demise,
They logged the only explanation left...
This Species has Amused itself to Death."

This is one of the best albums I've ever heard. I've only outlined half of
the songs, the rest are just as awesome. The music is good, old Rock and
Roll. Andy Fairweather Low does incredible things to various guitars, and
reading the liner notes is amusing (e.g. Rickenbacker 12-string played with
a feather). Jeff Beck does a few songs also, and Rita Coolidge assists
backup on the title track.

So, "Amused to Death" by Roger Waters could be considered one of the
soundtracks for current events. If you like Rock and Roll, you will adore
this for the music. If you love lyrics (as I do), this album will grab you
where you live. As a bonus, there is an interesting sound thread in
voice-overs and sound effects. It's definitely a "concept album" in that
the whole thing tells a story. It also has some great stand-alone tracks.
I hope this inspires at least one of you to locate this and take a listen.
I find it simply amazing (obviously).

Thanks for your time. Off to your regular life.

Peace,
Bethey

that this is the first interview in ages that i've actually cared
passionately about. i mean, i've had interviews for dumb things like jobs at
Starbucks and Bed, Bath and Beyond, but not anything i've particularly cared
about. this i really do care about. i have to knock em dead. so like i
said - major good juju. thank you.

Jim - that's so amazing what happened with your daughter. miracles do indeed
happen. the best for all of you in her recovery process.

as per Bethey's post, i don't think we've actually had a progressive
politician in a major office for decades. i think the climate is just not
right for them right now. i wish it was. i hope it will be soon. it seems
that modus operandi for both major parties is simply a holding pattern -
damage control, maybe - rather than any real progress on domestic or foreign
fronts.

it's so nice to be back, dear RDT.

Coldplay, R.E.M., U2, Willie Nelson and Ben Harper are among the
artists represented via live recordings on "Carved in Stone Vol. 2,"
recorded at the famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre outside Denver. The
10-track album will be available in the Denver area beginning June 4

"Carved in Stone," which featured Phish, Widespread Panic and Indigo

The lone previously released cut on "Vol. 2" is U2's "Sunday Bloody

How Many Members Of The Bush Administration Does It Take To Screw In A
Light Bulb?

The Answer is SEVEN:

(1) one to deny that a light bulb needs to be replaced

(2) one to attack and question the patriotism of anyone who has questions
about the light bulb

(3) one to blame the previous administration for the need of a new light
bulb

(4) one to arrange the invasion of a country rumored to have a secret
stockpile of light bulbs

(5) one to get together with Vice President Cheney and figure out how to
pay Halliburton Industries one million dollars for a light bulb

(6) one to arrange a photo-op session showing Bush changing the light bulb
while dressed in a flight suit and wrapped in an American flag

(7) and finally one to explain to Bush the difference between screwing a
light bulb and screwing the country

Much thanks to the forwarder of this to me. Hope you all enjoy it. :)

Peace,
Bethey

(happens every summer, I don't know why), and I need to sell about half of
my Tori Amos collection (CD Singles, rare posters, and concert videos). I
thought I'd throw the offer out to those of you interested instead of going
to Ebay. So if you are interested, shoot me an email and I'll send you the
list of stuff and you can send me your offer.

I'll give it till Memorial Day for you all to reply before I take the lot

Subject: I'll teach you all this

So, this live DVD kinda crept up on me. I hadn't heard a thing
about it until Wednesday, and then I wondered, "hey, when is it
coming out?" and it turned out it *was* out. Guess with RDT in
hibernation I don't have the most up-to-date news.

So, does anybody have it? Is it good? Is it sucky? Is it a
life-changing experience?

I did buy a DVD last week, though. I bought Return of the King (of
course). Haven't watched it all the way through yet (that's too
much for a work night), but I have popped around to some of my
favorite scenes (scenes with Eowen, scenes without Arwen, scenes
with Theoden, scenes before battles, Aragorn gets Anduril
(finally!)). I'll probably watch the whole thing this weekend.

The Two Towers may still be my favorite, though.

I also bought So-Called Chaos. So far, it seems to be comparable
to Under Rug Swept (i.e., top shelf), but time will tell. It has
all the things I like about Alanis:

    her annoying voice

her tendency to put the emphasis on the wrong syllables of
    words

the fact that she documents her own thought processes even
more thoroughly then Tolkein documented Middle Earth

her ability to come up with really good hooks (most of the
    time)

her humor (thing about her which is most often overlooked).

So, my job is now tentatively possibly indefinitely scheduled to
end on August 2nd. Maybe. I'm not getting emotionally attached
to that date or anything. It's changed too many times. I have
seen the new area my department is going to move into, and there
are fewer seats than we have now. So, there you go.

As B/4,

John

John wrote in digest #1897 regarding free health care:
>It's obviously not going to happen in the US any time soon (or at all),
>but medicine is more and more nakedly a business for profit,

There are even more reasons why it's unlikely to happen any time soon in
the U.S. due to the enormous deficits run up by the war in Iraq, the
ongoing war on terror and tax cuts to people who were only likely to be
rich already. The only way you'll ever get it is to increase takes. Here,
every taxpayer pays the Medicare levy on top of their income tax, which has
a sole purpose to be spent for healthcare. I think it's about 1.25% but I'm
not sure as I let experts handle my taxes. But anyway, that levy alone does
not cover the growing demand for healthcare and the ever increasing costs
of new medical services. The system has been butchered by the current
government over three terms in office and has been complicated further by
"carrot and stick" tax arrangements that I'll spare you.

In regards to drug companies and their profits, as public companies you
can't really deny them turning a profit, but when does too much profit
become morally bankrupt? Judging by all the spam I get on medications from
Canada, it's not hard to tell consumers in the U.S. are being gouged at the
expense of everyone else. In Australia, drugs that are deemed to be
essential fall into the Public Benefits Scheme (PBS). The PBS through
government funding subsidises the cost of these pharmaceuticals so patients
can afford them. Even when you take into account the subsidy, you're still
paying far more for drugs than we are.

One of the sticking points in the free trade agreement recently signed by
our two countries was the PBS. We were always saying it was not negotiable.
The drug companies wanted it ended. What resulted was a continuation of the
subsidies but with a clause saying it could be "reviewed". Nothing has been
specified for the review process so there's really no reason why the U.S.
government, under pressure from the drug companies couldn't "review" the
scheme by saying it is over, causing prices to skyrocket overnight.

I have a lot of misgivings about the free trade agreement, but that's
another issue entirely. Let me just say I think our government sold our
soul. Whether it's to the devil or not is debatable. For a "free trade"
agreement, there's still far too many of the right things that haven't been
freed up and too many of the wrong things given away.

>And don't get me going on the difficulty of getting reimbursed for
>legitimate charges, which, in my experience, can take up to 11 months.

That is a universal problem with any insurance company. They're more than
happy to take your money and remind you if you owe them, but it's an
entirely different thing altogether when you ask them for some back.
There's too much fine print and too many escape clauses. The escape clause
I hate the most is "Act of God". Has an insurance company got a right to
declare something is an act of God? That should at least be left to the
clergy. Should it even apply if you're an athiest?
