Subject: OT: six feet under.

i hope that you guys can excuse my posting this here. i have exhausted all
other possible avenues and was hoping someone out there in tori-land might be
able to help ...

i'm desperate for a copy of the third season of "six feet under." i am hoping
to write about it for an honours course i'm doing at uni, but need to be able
to a) watch the show again, and b) be able to provide the lecturer in question
with a copy of the shows.

i am in australia, but have a VCR that plays both NTSC and PAL formats when
tapes are recorded in SP (slow play. ie: if a video tape is 180 minutes long,
three 60 minute shows would fit on the tape, as opposed to if one was using a
180 minute tape in long play format, which would mean six 60 minute shows
would
fit on the tape). downloading the episodes from the net is, unfortunately, not
an option.

if anybody out there has copies of the shows on tape, or would be able to
record them for me from HBO's 'on demand' service (which will apparently very
soon start showing season three again) i would be *exceedingly* grateful and
would, of course, somehow reimburse you for your time and trouble.

warm wishes,
heidi.

Subject: R.W. Reagan -- A few thoughts...

"You are a very Bad Man!" Dorothy said sternly. "Oh no, my dear", replied
the Wizard, "I'm a very good man. It's just that I'm a very bad wizard."
The Wizard of OZ

This sums up how I feel about Reagan. In my "formative" years (Jr. High),
Reagan was the Bad Man who sent the Nat'l Guard after the student protesters
at UC Berkeley. His Presidential bid was the first election I was able to
participate in. His tenure in DC colored my young adult years, as well as
my daughter's first 7 years. Yes, it was his policies that destroyed the
USSR, but it was a massive gamble that really cost us in the long run.
"Reaganomics" is the reason $35,000 homes are currently selling for
$500,000. Because of the effect of Reagan on the economy, families now
require two full time wage-earners to have the same quality of life as was
had by one "head of household" (which is what the wage-earner was called).
Because of Reagan, today's Democrats are really reagancrats; Liberal
Republicans.

I watched every minute of the tributes to Ronnie, which surprised me. I
guess it was the slow motion pageantry of the whole thing that sucked me in.
I did note the extreme strength of Nancy, and my heart went out to her when
she finally broke down at the very end. I thought Ron and Patty did a good
job of eulogizing their father while not forgiving him his weaknesses (not
pointing them out either). However, I have to admit his biggest weakness
was the love that he and Nancy shared, a love so strong it excluded every
other thing; children, nation, world... The romantic in me wishes that we
all had that weakness...someone to love to the exclusion of everything else.

I had to write a villanelle (a formula for writing a poem) for poetry class
the weekend Ronnie died, and I was inspired to write about him. It is not
politically correct, and if you think you might be offended for something
that does not canonize Ronald Reagan, please stop reading now. If you read
the poem, I don't want to be yelled at. It is MY opinion, and I didn't read
it over his coffin in public, so I don't want to be lectured about being
"respectful".

>>spoiler: don't read if you love Ronnie

>>I'm serious. I don't want to hear it.

>>enjoy the poem.

The Wall is Finally Down

Uncle Ronnie's dead and gone
Tears streak his widow's face
His dark night has turned to dawn

He'll soon be under Library Lawn
Bush II has taken his place
And Uncle Ronnie is dead and gone.

During his rule, we were all just pawns
Taxes paid the nuclear race
Now his night has turned to dawn

He thought "less brains and more brawn"
The Russians couldn't keep pace
And now old Ronnie's dead and gone.

After he felled that evil spawn
By threatening bombs dropped from space
So the end did truly dawn

on Communism - that devil's spawn
Now global change is the American race
And Uncle Ronnie is dead and gone.
His dark night has turned to dawn

sheesh, I'm such a slacker. Half of you probably don't even remember who I
am... eh, well...

My life at present... Tiarna is 4 1/2, Harry Potter mad still, loves drawing
and is already talking about primary school (which isn't until next year).
Shaelea is 18 months old, talking quite well (not quite up to sentances, but
heck she's even trying out some Potter spells...) and generally getting into
mischief. And me? Well I've been a right geek and dressed as a hobbit lass
for a LOTR convention back in March. I've also been getting into the rubber
stamping a bit. Made a website for myself and got a livejournal though have
been rather lax with that so far... They'll be doing the LOTR symphony in
Sydney this weekend, but I've had to let that one slip by the wayside... the
con in March was supposed to be my one-off big spend on myself for the year,
but then they've got some of the guys back for a cabaret event in July that
I just can't pass up because Craig Parker and Mark Ferguson are just too
funny together... ~sigh~ dagnamit, more time and money please! And in just
over a week we'll be heading up the coast for a bit of a holiday with my
family.

Am also rather disappointed in winter so far... nowhere near cold or wet
enough.

New Tori? Must remember to look out for that... I did go through a spurt
earlier in the year of listening to her stuff on rotation again, completely
forgot about the dvd coming out.

And despite how quiet this list has been I am behind... ~shakes head~

Subject: I've got 13 channels of shit on the TV to choose from

I know there was something else I wanted to start with, but I'll just run
with one of today's little episodes as it's just about all I can remember.
After so many years bitching about the fact I never watch it and pay too
much money, I finally worked up the courage to call my satellite TV
provider to cancel my package. I've been with them since their inception
and was with the company they took over for two years before that, for
nearly 8 years all up.

So to business. I looked up their website to find out how to cancel but
couldn't find anything, so I called their general number. After going
through 3 automated options that were the closest to what I wanted, I spoke
to a guy who took all my details and passed me on to the proper department.
Guy #2 asks me my details all over again, then proceeds to try and upgrade
me to the new digital package, plus he wants to give me one month free.
Great, a free month of stuff I don't want to watch. I let him have his say
for 10 minutes and when I persist, he transfers me to his boss. Same again,
takes details, tries to upgrade me and give me a month free. When I insist
on cancellation, he puts me back to guy #2 who asks again, "Are you really
sure?" As soon as I insist for about the 40th time, we proceed to arrange a
day for them to take away their equipment, which happens to be the exact
day I'm paid up until.

Now, I made this phone call from work and just after lunch I hear the cable
service from the same provider is out to the whole building and can't be
attended to until tomorrow afternoon. Coincidence?

Tip to Lavs... if you still haven't got your digital package, threaten to
cancel. They'll probably upgrade you tomorrow and give you a free month.

Dalsh said in digest 1901:
>Speaking of "Lord of the Rings" (seen "Meet the Feebles" and "Dead Alive"
>yet?)

Haven't seen Dead Alive but have seen "Meet The Feebles" and have "Bad
Taste" on video. You'd think after winning an Oscar they'd release
Jackson's back catalogue on DVD, as I'm really hanging for MtF. You've got
to love a movie that has "The Sodomy Song" in it. And BT is so bad it's
hilarious. You couldn't make a more B-grade horror movie if you tried.
Strange how Jackson looks much the same as he did back then.

>Pink Floyd... surprised you went with the Roger Waters stuff. Amused To
>Death was kind of hard for me to listen to.

As much as I loved the real Floyd stuff, the show was just to visually
distracting and the Waters group were far tighter. Actually, I only just
ordered the Waters "In The Flesh" double CD which is version of all the
songs done by his band. It may even be live, but I won't know that until I
get it. There is also a live DVD with the same name, but he does put on a
dull show visually. I can't believe I couldn't remember who the other
guitarist was - it was Snowy White, who's certainly on-par with Andy
Fairweather-Low.

>More Syd Barrett stuff seems to have been unearthed recently, including
>the "American Bandstand" appearance and "Jugband Blues" promo.

It's almost never ending. I got the CD boxed set "Crazy Diamond" a few
years ago which included then a whole heap of previously unreleased
material. If you're the slightest bit of a Syd fan, I can highly recommend
the book "Crazy Diamond - Syd Barrett & The Dawn Of Pink Floyd" by Mike
Watkinson & Pete Anderson. It's a book I searched for over many years and
came across it by accident when I was in L.A.. It's a fine read and cleared
up a lot of misconceptions I had.

Hang on a sec, is this a Tori Amos or Pink Floyd list we're on? I'm just
happy to be discussing anything these days.

Bethey - "Turtle" guy. This certainly sounds more promising than the
redneck. While you might have been out of the game for a good many years,
it's like riding a bicycle.... if it makes you feel like a teenager again
making out in the back seat, don't feel guilty about it. Take it on your
own time by all means, but you're both consenting adults so there's nothing
to feel ashamed about. Besides, it's not like you have to be home before
curfew. Just make sure you lubricate the chain first - I can tell you
mine's completely rusty.
