Subject: Mr. Chicken
When my kids were growing up in the 70's, we had a lot of strange ongoing
little games going on. In Cleveland, OH there is chain of restaurants
called "Mr. Chicken". Of course, as explained to my kids "Mr. Chicken" was
50 feet tall and hid in the woods. He was the by-product of exposure to
radioactive waste and he would run out and eat brown Chevy Vegas's (which we
drove). My kids were always on the lookout for "Mr. Chicken". Through the
years they never really forgave me for this ongoing game.
My wife and I eat out often now and as look at the menu I see "Mr. Chicken"
seems still to be with us. A few months I described how Minute Maid and
Mayo Clinic have created life on their premium orange juice cartons. Right
below the tab with two tips is written "Healthy Living Tips from Mayo
Clinic.com" Their healthy living tips are a miracle of genetic engineering.
Now, it seems that they are at it again. Somewhere in the South there is a
secret laboratory developing new species of chickens. These chickens are
raised in great secrecy just for the restaurant business to be used in
salads.
There is the Spinach Chicken developed for Wendy's. This poor thing cannot
fly since it does not have feathers but has spinach leaves. There are not
that many other chickens that are green so it can easily be spotted. Kids
will not go near it.
Another favorite is the Pecan Crusted Chicken developed for TGIF. This is a
strange looking bird if there ever was one. The roosters are always in
disgrace because they keep losing their nuts and the hens will have nothing
to do with them.
Of course there is the Buffalo Chicken. They stand about three feet tall
and have a nasty habit of chasing farm hands around and stampeding at the
slightest noise. Nothing is more exciting then seeing a herd of buffalo
chickens stampeding across the prairie.
This most scary is the Kick'n Buffalo Chicken developed for Friendly's
restaurants. Do you really want to meet a Kick'n Buffalo Chicken in the
woods? They can grow to be over five feet tall and are mean. I always
worry that a Kick'n Buffalo Chicken will get exposed to radioactive waste
and grow to be 50 foot tall. "Mr. Chicken" of my kid's childhood nightmares
will be a reality. Can you imagine the terror it can cause it can cause
flying over a freeway consider it is not toilet trained.
I read in "Japan Today" that they are filming the final installment of the
Godzilla series titled "Godzilla: Final Wars" in which half the planet will
get wiped out. The movie stars Masahiro Matsuoka who is a popular recording
star. This got my brain working (which is always dangerous) and I thought
of a career for Tori in the movies. Coming soon to a screen near you,
"Godzilla Meets the Giant Kick'n Buffalo Chicken" starring Tori Amos and
Brad Pitt. Poor Godzilla, he was so henpecked after the encounter, he could
not face life and retired to a faraway island never to be seen again.
On a more serious note President Bush banned genetic research creating new
life. There is a major concern that something will be created that we
cannot control. Maybe genetic research creating life has been going on for
a long time and has been top secret. Maybe Jessica Simpson discovered this
deep dark secret and knew more about Buffalo wings than we suspected.
In the movie "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" genetic research went amuck and
killer tomatoes escaped from a lab and almost wiped out humanity. (Quick:
What song does Tori sing "Chasing Tomatoes" in the prelude?) Only a small
group of heroes headed by the San Diego chicken saved the day. It seems
ironic that mankind was saved by a chicken in this movie. I wonder if the
fate of mankind is to be chased through the streets by an army of
genetically altered chickens! Spinach, Pecan Crusted, Buffalo, and Kick'n
Buffalo Chickens helped by Santa Fe Chickens and a host of others form a
massive army bent on destroying mankind.
Oh well, so much for the chicken business. Hope you enjoy your chicken
salad and appreciate the advanced genetic technology and the terrible
dangers that went into its creation.
Have to end.

Subject: Turtle Guy and In the Flesh....
Hey Y'all!
Brian: The DVD of "In the Flesh" is the one that turned me onto "Amused to
Death"...(uh, depressing? On a TORI list someone complains music is
depressing??? I just had to laugh...) and it is an awesome concert. Now,
I've been told that I'm missing out on the Floyd experience (what? Pink
isn't well, stayed back in the hotel, Rogers is the surrogate band?), so I'm
waiting for the Floyd Pompeii concert DVD to see the comparison. But Andy
F. Low and Snowy White are really, as you say, tight and I may have become
spoiled by the perfected sound. No offence to Pinky fans ;).
Turtle Guy emailed back to say it was indeed an amazing first date and that
was the last I heard from him. He never called or emailed after that. Oh
well. I know I'm an intimidating chick because I play no games. I just
know that I will find one guy who respects me for that, for being totally
up-front, as opposed to running, screaming into the night. And I won't
settle for anything else. Even if I become the queen of first dates, I
won't modify this behavior. I won't play games.
I broke down and am now in my sixth day of my seven day free trial of
eharmony. I've so far gotten to "open" communication with two guys in my
area, both grad students. It's set up to go through four steps with someone
who matches through the personality profile...closed-end questions, then
open-ended questions, then a list of 10 "Must Haves" and 10 "Can't Stands",
then 3 short-answer questions. At any point you can stop the match if
anything doesn't gel. Like any guy that said "can't stand" use of drugs, I
stopped the match. So I went through 25 matches so far and have it narrowed
to 2 - 4, all in my area (within 50 miles). One guy is in Allentown and
really into philosophy. He has a MS in Physics and working on another
Masters at Lehigh. I gave him my email and web page, and we'll see if he
wants to take it off eharmony. It would be awesome to be able to continue
to see if these guys who sound interesting are able to continue when I quit
on Saturday night. I can't afford $50, even though it is an excellent way
to internet date. Things are up front before you ever speak, and it's
stupid to play games for that amount of money. It really is a service only
for those who are ready to find One person, not players.
Gees, it's been a year yesterday since my epiphany (a year off tobacco
tomorrow!), and 6 months since I said I refuse to be alone anymore. Yes,
I've had to be pro-active, but that's how I live my life since my epiphany.
When in doubt...Do Something. I honestly feel all you guys sending me good
wishes and positive vibes and it helps. So thanks.
Lavs: Gees, I might remember you...in the mists of the distant past... Oh
wait! You are the Aussie Lassie with the Tori conceived and born babies!!!
Yeah! I remember you! ;) silly girl. Still behind on reading doesn't
surprise me in the least. Bri: go smack her for me and get her up to
speed! ;)
Fairy Blessings,
Bethey

Ronnie is the big news these days. I know. A former president dies, and
people conveniently forget about how he ignored all the people who were
dying from AIDS (well, they were gays and/or promiscuous, weren't they?),
how he preached against drugs but had people working for him running all
over the word exchanging various amounts of weapons, cash, hostages and
drugs. He's given credit for toppling the Soviet Union, but what is
important to remember is that if the USSR hadn't collapsed, Ronnie would
have had the US in a nuclear war with them (which he insisted repeatedly
was "winable").
There are two men whose recent deaths do sadden me, though.
One was Ray Charles. I was never a huge fan, but I saw him perform live
once, at the Filmore East (with Dizzy Gillespie as the opening act), and I
can't immediately think of anybody else I ever saw who combined such a
tremendous talent with such incredible joy and enthusiasm for what he was
doing. It was a wonderful night.
The other sad story was Robert Quine's recent death. He was the lead
guitarist for Richard Hell and the VoidOids, and later played with Lou
Reed, John Zorn, Tom Waits, Marianne Faithfull, Matthew Sweet and Lloyd
Cole. In the early days of New Wave, he was a huge influence on anybody
who was expanding the sonic range of the electric guitar, or searching for
ways of merging music and noise. I always remember him standing
stock-still on stage at CBGBs (while the rest of the VoidOids threw
themselves around), balding, dark glasses, stone-faced, unleashing chaos
and madness from his amp. I saw him many times on the streets in NY after
that, always looking just the same, and now I'm sorry I never said
anything to him. But he was kind of a forbidding presence, though I know
most of the people walking past him had no idea who he was.
As B/4,
John

Subject: My final Poem...
Hey All!
So I had to write a sestina for my final poem (a cascading revolve
mathematical formula using the same six end words), and was inspired to
write about...what else? What I am doing on this planet. Hope you like it.
TO KNOW PEACE WHERE DREAMS SURVIVE
I live a symbolic life, with convictions in my dreams.
The Universal Soul demands I work for peace.
I cannot accept the world as it speeds to
it's end. I know in my heart somewhere,
I can make a difference. I know
that is why I am able to survive.
I have faith in this Race to survive.
I believe we can all live our dreams,
even when the masses deny me, saying "No,
forget it. There is no way to peace",
and shame and despair create my outerwear,
I still persevere and I know you can too.
I know you can work and struggle in order to
ensure our nation and our world survives.
Knowing despite the evil that exists out where
we can't reach it, we can still believe in dreams.
We can still believe, with faith, peace
will come. With work and love, I know --
even though the masses scream out "NO!
You are wrong!"; Gandhi, JFK and MLK II
all tell me (in the Universal Soul) that peace
is the only way this human race can survive-
we must dream while awake and let these dreams
guide us to the great place, the utopia where
the sex, creed, or color skin you wear
doesn't really matter. You see, this I know,
if we all strive towards our best, all dreams
will become reality. This I know, if we are to
become meaningful beings, not just trying to survive,
we will create a world of peace
and love, and joy. What does it take? Just a piece
of yourself, of humanity, the soul you wear
outside your skin -to know peace where dreams survive.
To understand the meaning of life - to know
we have no choice but to believe in our dreams,
to have faith in ourselves, and in humanity too.
Believe and have faith to make real the dreams of peace.
Live within those dreams and they will take us where
we will believe, and then, to know peace where dreams survive.
