More replies, but will write something fresh next time. Hopefully sooner
rather than later too.
Now, where was I with the replies? Oh yes, digest 1904, with Teunis:
>Next you know, we'll be naming kids after Tori songs.
Isn't doing that to pets enough already?
>And on other notes - Canadian political elections are messy.
Ditto for Australian. I think that's universal. Let's all just breathe a
sigh of relief we don't live in countries where you risk being killed when
you go to vote. Or even that we get to vote.
From John:
>I was reading last week that the first cell phone virus has appeared.
It's a good thing we're descended from the Golgafrinchans, otherwise we
could all die from it.
John again in digest 1905:
>I know someone who tends to get into relationships with guys who are
>actually in love with someone else (but the someone else is unavailable
>for some reason).
I've met people like that too and it usually is guys. It's all about the
thrill of the chase and trying to have something they can't have. It says
an awful lot about their personal inadequacies.
In digest 1906, we had an update on Bethey's on-line dating experiences.
I'm glad you spotted the potential trouble-maker before things went too
far. The only thing that worries me a bit is that in my book, you're
meeting these guys too soon after the initial contact. I certainly wouldn't
recommend going to their place or having them over to yours after the first
date. Get to know them a little more on-line first and only meet in public
until you feel comfortable with them in person.
Wow, I'm ripping through this. In digest 1907, John sayeth:
>Anyway, I've made up a CD of the "Scarlet's Hidden Treasures" songs, mixed
>with my favorite songs from "Scarlet's Walk" and it's a good listen, and
>it reinforces my feeling that "Scarlet's Walk" is way overproduced. The
>SHT songs are much more lean
That sounds very much like how it was with Liz Phair's most recent album,
as the on-line bonus tracks were more "traditional" in content and the way
they were produced.
>I've been imagining what Tori would sound like with a really great
>rhythm section....
>I'm sure Matt and John play what's in Tori's head, but the best thing a
>rhythm section can do for you is to play things that *aren't* in your
>head, to show you things in the songs that you didn't see when you wrote
>them.
Very interesting thought and I know precisely what you mean. I don't have
any problem with the existing rhythm section, but it's clearly a one woman
show. While I've got nothing against Tori having her own way, I can't help
that her sound has become somewhat stale over the last few albums. Having
been a bassist myself, the first thing I notice in a song is the rhythm and
if you can't notice it because it's mixed too low or is too bland, it's not
likely to sell. It doesn't mean a complex rhythm is required, as even very
simple but catchy arrangements can make an enormous difference.
Estraven...
>What about families with two incomes (and often four, five, or even
>more jobs between them) who have huge credit card bills and must count
>every cent, while living in shabby, overpriced rentals...
I did make it clear I had no sympathy for the yuppies. The working poor I
do have sympathy for. There is no reason anyone should have to work three
or more jobs to just be able to survive. It comes back to one main issue
again - greed. Greed on behalf of all the landlords who are inflating
housing markets in their pursuit of money who can only make a return on
their investments by jacking up rent. Greed on behalf of the shareholders
who demand bigger returns from banks who can get away with extortionate
interest rates on their credit cards. The same banks will increase credit
limits and offer more cards to people who can't afford them as they know
they can't lose. Greed from companies that refuse to pay a wage people can
live off. Greed from governments that won't legislate that companies have
to pay a living wage and don't provide welfare.
Gordon Gecko is not dead. It's more likely he's swapped the suit for casual
attire, has a short hairstyle which he doesn't slick back and doesn't thumb
his nose at those who are worse off publicly any more. He just rubs his
greasy little palms together in private.
I won't say the welfare system here is brilliant and it's been getting
worse over the last 20 years, but some is better than virtually none. I
actually saw Bowling For Columbine for the first time a couple of weeks ago
and one of the most telling points Michael Moore made regarding violent
crime between the US and other Western countries was about having a decent
welfare system and a reasonable living wage.
But getting back to greed one last time, I was sent two separate pieces of
literature on investment this week and both extolled the virtue of not
actually paying off your mortgage and borrowing against the equity you have
to invest in property. I could do nothing but shake my head at that. I'll
agree there's good debt and there's bad debt, but excessive debt should be
avoided at all costs.
That's all for now, folks.
Brian

I think it would be really cool if the shows from over the years were
available online. Either for free via archive.org or sharingthegroove.com,
or for a small fee via itunes or emusic.com.

Subject: Getting fresh
Time for a whole host of fresh thoughts.
A few weeks back I watched a fascinating documentary on the effects of
drinking alcohol and the differences between what it does to men and women.
While it's well known that women get drunk faster then men due to a higher
body fat content, there were some other things I'd never heard of.
When a woman drinks, when she hit the 4 to 5 drink mark, her testosterone
levels skyrocket, even beyond the normal levels of a man, which explains
why they become more aggressive. The result is reverse in men - the more
they drink, the lower the testosterone becomes (though that's not a mystery
- brewer's droop), plus their estrogen levels rise. This explains why men
who drink heavily and regularly get man-boobs.
I also heard a couple of months back that women with higher levels of
testosterone were more likely to conceive. This would make you think that
women are more likely to get pregnant from a one night stand after a night
on the turps, but there is other research that states semen is rejected as
a foreign substance until after about 5 months of regular copulation with
the same partner. I guess if there are any medical students out there
looking for something to study, try comparing rates of conception between
women in one night stands and those in stable relationships.
I guess that's enough medical news for now.
On a completely different subject, I had the company of one time list
member and legend in his own mind, wildkoba, esq. last weekend. You'll all
be please (or frightened) to know he hasn't changed one bit. Well, not
much, considering he was responsible for a dozen high school kids from the
school he teaches at. Koba was travelling with an orchestra from Florida
called Tallahassee Winds, who I caught at the Sydney Opera House and while
it's not my usual bag, they did put on a great performance. I was a little
disappointed however to find they could put out more wind than Koba. Only just.
I've stepped into the realm of broadband internet at home. I figured I'd
use it more than I was the satellite TV I cancelled and still save enough
each month for a few DVDs. It was a bit of a struggle to get it going,
which is something I have to blame the installation package from my ISP on.
I really wasn't happy with it, as it loaded a whole heap of software I
didn't want and didn't give me any say in the matter. It even installed
over newer versions of software I had. Otherwise, it's bliss, when it works.
I also splashed out on a Pocket PC during the week. I'm sure it'll just end
up being an expensive toy, but I principally bought it so I could read
e-books as I'm short on space for real ones. I'm one of those people that
can't let old books go, even the ones I hate. At least I'm never short of
something to read, but it all gets a bit stale after the first few times.
One thing I am trying to get around is the handwriting recognition feature.
While it works marvelously well, for some reason I can't write the number
"4". It seems I've been doing it wrong all these years. To simplify the
recognition process, you go through each character with a "handwritten"
example. It demonstrates how that character is written and there are
multiple examples of different writing styles. You then exclude the types
you'd never write to speed up the process. For me, it was excluding the
characters that were clearly how someone left handed would write them, plus
all the fancy, swirly ones. I still can't write "4", but everything else is
just dandy.
The software package for this also loaded crap I didn't want on my PC. It
kept wanting to load IE5, when I already had IE6 sp1. I kept saying no, but
it went and loaded Outlook Express 5 anyway. All I wanted to do was load
Outlook 2002 and Active Sync. Speaking of OE, even if you don't use it,
download the Microsoft patches for it as they've made this one brown
trouser rated. Last time they did that there was a major worm outbreak
within a couple of weeks.
Getting away from the techie stuff, I meant to comment on what my favourite
MILF, Lavs said regarding winter here a few weeks back. Well I guess you're
somewhat pleased after this weekend and the last one, though the one before
was obscene with its t-shirt and shorts weather. I told Koba before his
arrival I'd kiss his arse if it rained while he was here. Of course it
rained for 4 of the 5 days. Lucky I didn't remind him of that one, even
though he did get his arse waxed for the occasion.

Hey y'all,
Just a quickie to say thanks to John B and Estraven for their awesome posts
about America today. You said what I say, and it's so nice to see it from
someone else.
I had a wonderful Wildwood N.J. vacation last week. Two nights and two days
with my new boyfriend. Yes, the city hall worker. I'm so glad that it
worked out as it did, for he made me fall in love with him. :)
I'll write a good update on things soon, because it's been so beautiful and
I can't wait to share it with you all.
Fairy Blessings,
Bethey

Subject: ever find out that a lot of people around you are lying?
and did it ever make you wonder if you were all along?
I've got a whole mess of miscommunications here.
Serious. Very serious. And not just stupid crap.
I don't know what to do about it.
I don't know my part. I don't know anyone else's part. There's people
involved I trust deeply... and maybe shouldn't. There's people involved I
don't trust at all... and did.
Maybe I should just find a monastary who'd be willing to accept me.
it'd never happen though.
*sigh*
All I can ask at this point - someone out there somewhere has had
experience with stuff like this. I'm not even sure I can explain it
without it getting all confused some more... anyways any and all advice
would be appreciated...
all I know is I heard stuff that turns out not to be true
and I apparently said stuff that wasn't.
