bethey- good commentary about the mistreatment of the Iraqi prisoners.
Wrong no matter how you look at it. One thing: am I wrong in
disagreeing with those who have said that the prisoner abuse was worse
than the brutal killing of the hostages by the terrorists? Perhaps
I've read too much into some of the press reports, but it seems like
there's this "they deserved it" undertone to some of the reports.

I promise that wasn't meant as a pro-war statement.

On the subject of weapons of mass destruction: I'm still wondering
where the hell the ones the Iraqis were supposed to have had went to.
And for all the stink about Iraqi WMDs, I'm truly amazed that there's
no uproar about the very blatant WMD projects being worked on openly by
the Iranians and the North Koreans. Nuclear weapon and missile
programs- North Korea tested a missile in 1998 that *could* reach the
US West Coast and definitely could put a large part of Asia and Pacific
Islands within striking range, but everything has been so focused on
Afghanistan and Iraq that it seems like the even more likely threats
have slipped below the proverbial radar.

Pardon the pessimism, but despite the ouster of Hussein I don't think
the current war is anywhere near an end. I'm reminded of "1984" where
it seemed like Oceania had been at war with one rival power or another
for so long that no one remembered when the war started, who was on
what side, and the State's propaganda machine (called the "Ministry of
Truth") made daily broadcasts about how the Oceania was on the brink of
imminent victory...but just how long had they been claiming that the
war was nearing an end?

I've said this before about the US media: perhaps not blatant
propaganda per se, but sometimes in a similar vein IMHO to the
broadcasts in "1984", like the press in a perverse way is having way
too much fun covering war and destruction- what happens when something
big happens that shows humanity at its best takes place? So used to
covering war that they'll be totally lost when the war ends at some
point.

My parents watch those shows although I think a lot of the time it's
for laughs, as many of those shows show projects that either a)show
bizarre decorating taste or b) are expensive projects most people
wouldn't be able to do or hire someone to do anyway. A few shows were
helpful when they started remodeling their house back in '98- nothing
outrageous, just a lot of things they had wanted in the house for a
long time and finally had the time and money to do it.

And some professionals have been known to stall work so it's still
taking as long compared with one doing the job themselves. On the
other hand, I'd be very reluctant to attempt anything involving
plumbing or electrical work, no matter how many how-to shows I've seen.

Sounds like my attitude about fast food. I don't mind going a little
further and spending a little more for better food, just to avoid the
McDonald's that might be closer. I think those who like Starbucks go
there figuring they can get that bohemian coffee-house atmosphere
without actually going to a bohemian coffeehouse.

Defeats the whole purpose of traveling when you go far from home and
*still* can't get away from something you can see all the time at home.

People were lining up for hours to get into the opening of the first
Krispy Kreme place here in San Antonio. Their company, I must admit,
did an excellent job generating interest, by advertising the coming to
SA of Krispy Kreme, so by the time the first one here opened, everyone
had to see what all the hype was about.

That's been going on long before the internet and MP3s- I remember in
the early and mid-80s hearing about US servicepersons seeing American
films in Europe, Japan, and South Korea around the same time those
films had just been released domestically here. Back then there
weren't camcorders that could be sneaked into a theatre, so one wonders
how those movies were pirated- I heard one theory that theatrical
prints were stolen in the US and transfered to VHS tape that then got
copied all over the place. I think music was pirated the same was-
master tapes falling into the hands of pirates.

RIAA going after the government? IMHO they're ruined their credibility
already by going after the easy targets rather than actually going
after the large-scale pirates.

Not too long ago I was at an appointment and I happened to look up from
the book I was reading to see a DVD starting up on the waiting room
TV....and I was suprised to see that the movie starting up was "I,
Robot". Obviously a DVD made from a tape someone made in the theater-
someone was moving in the front row, like an old MST3K episode.

later!

We honor The One on this day.

Definite mistake to read the archives. I've put
myself through that misery in the past, and yeah...
it's embarrassing.

The best that I can say is that I feel that I've grown
quite a bit since then. I started posting when I was
a confused girl, just starting out as a freshman in
college, and now I'm a confused girl whose entering
her 3rd year of grad school.

I hope everyone is enjoying the summer (or winter, for
you backwards Aussies and other southern
hemispherers).

My summer has involved lots of time spent indoors,
working on my masters thesis (which I turned in a few
weeks ago, yay). However, my program goes straight
through for a PhD, so the process of getting a masters
degree also includes qualifying to move onto the PhD
program, so there's plenty of work still ahead. This
means that, as I write this post, I'm procrastinating
my ass off.

I saw the movie Garden State the other week (for the
second time), and wanted to comment on it, but I think
that anything I'd say would be one huge spoiler. That
said, I recommend that you find somewhere to see it
*now*. As far as I know, it's still not a very wide
release, but it's a beautiful little movie... I'm sure
more theatres will start to have it as the word
spreads. Being a Jersey girl, I hunted down a theatre
where I could see it right away. Once I saw the
abstract, quirky trailer for the movie followed up by
the title "Garden State", I was hooked and could
barely wait for the movie to be released. Amazingly,
it didn't disappoint at all. I just think the ending
should have been different (it was maybe a tad
unrealistic), but again, I can't say much more because
it would spoil the movie and I doubt that enough of
you have seen it to make it worthwhile.

Coops commented on the empty Olympics. I'm not sure
what actually went down in Greece to lead to such poor
ticket sales, but a lot of the time, it looks like the
upper levels are more full, while the lower ones are
damn near empty. Maybe the ticket prices for the
prime seats were too expensive??

Even in this country, I feel like the games have been
much better advertised in the past. For instance, I
knew all about the women's gymnastics teams the last
few times around, but this year, I didn't know the
name of a single one of them, much less any
heartwarming story that they might have. Since I had
no idea who any of them were, I was suprised to hear a
commentator during the actual event say that this was
one of the best female gymnastic teams ever from the
US.

I was even further surprised to see that they weren't
all that good. How did that girl win the gold for
all-around??? pfft. She could stick the landings, but
she had no style or grace. I'm starting to get a
little bitter about gymnastics. The scoring seems to
have a lot of favoritism and is perhaps more based
upon athletes' reputations rather than their
performances on the actual day of the Olympic event.

Okay, my coffee is ready. It's getting to be that
time of the month, so the migraines are setting in.
Has anyone heard about/tried that new version of the
Pill, Seasonale? Where you only get your period every
3 months? I think I'm going to have to look into
that, because I'm tired of the monthly week of
migraines.

Sunshine and puppy dogs,
Linda

It's that time of the year again... cat rutting season. They were at it
again this morning at 6am just outside my bedroom window. I figure if I'm
not getting any, why should anyone or anything else get some on my
property, so I got even with a bucket of water. If anyone's seen the bonus
features on the Red Dwarf series 2 DVD where in a deleted scene Cat is
singing a love song, it sounds exactly like that. I wasn't seeing the
amusement factor this morning, but I wouldn't mind experiencing sex that
makes you yowl with ecstasy like that.

There was a brief moment last week when I could have been going to Athens
for work but it didn't pan out. Our one and only technician there got sick,
but now he's better and it's almost over... I may end up heading cross
country to Perth in a hurry though, but that may also turn out to be as
likely as the existence of and Iranian women's beach volleyball team as
I've got too much work on.

On the Olympics, one talking point that comes up every time is the beach
volleyball. It's not so much about the sporting prowess, but it's more
about what the women are wearing, or not wearing as the case may be. The
women are forced to wear bikinis of a regulated maximum size, where the men
can dag around in boardies and tank tops. So which way should the dress
code go, should the women be allowed to dress up or the men be made to
dress down? Do we want to see a bunch of guys diving around in a pair of
budgie smugglers? Some of the camera angles wouldn't be as appealing as it
is for the women, but even I can see the need for equality.

In digest 1912, Cyndi returned with words from the horse's mouth regarding
censorship of Tori's DVD. While I do understand now her rationale behind
blanking naughty works, I'm still a little perplexed as to what she
considers a viable demographic... 9 to 10 year olds. Considering adult
themes that run in some of her songs, a few swear words would be the least
of my concerns. Kids that age will have already heard those words and like
Tori suggest, are using them as well. They won't understand the finer
points of sexuality. Another thought would be if a sticker did appear on
the DVD, more teens would be pushing their parents to buy it. I would have
preferred it if Epic released "clean" and "dirty" versions of the DVD, that
way I could have what I want and parents could make the decision for their
children.

Simon also returned with:
> > Subject: Fly me to the Moon...
>
>35 years ago, that was possible.

Don't you know it was all staged in a studio?

Skanky cities. I guess it is easier to see all the bad elements of wherever
you live. When you sweep the dirt under the carpet, you know the dirt is
still there. While my original comments were about Sydney vs. Melbourne,
there's little surface you need to scratch with Melbourne due to all the
gangland killings. In Sydney, it's more likely to be a drive-by shooting
where a house will get sprayed with bullets and it's rare for someone to
get killed. In Melbourne, they walk right up to the victim in public and
shoot them in the head.

>I figure QUANTAS would be big users of the 747 and 777.

QANTAS was late on the uptake of 777's which isn't unusual for them. Most
domestic and short hop international flights are 737, 757 and 767, plus a
few small Airbus'. Qantas is an acronym so it's allowed to drop the "U".
Bonus points for telling me what it stands for without looking it up.

>was the anniversary of the moon landing given much press in Australia?

It gets a small mention every year regarding the fact we received the first
intact signal.

Your local library can tell you about Tori, at least some aspects.

Anyone who wants to learn how to play music from the "space" that Tori
does, (or are curious) should for sure check out the book, "Effortless
Mastery" by Kenny Werner. Kenny Werner is an old jazz piano player, he is
absolutely amazing. He gives some insights on how to get power and that odd
thing out of music that we can fell and that is authentic that Tori Amos
does so well. I think Tori Amos uses a lot of the stuff that Kenny
describes. If you are a music writer, then PLEEEEASE check this book out of
a library, It has changed my music forever. Also, many other non music
writers will also find this book very spiritually/intellectually enjoyable
and applicable to their lives.

Thanks peoples of cyber Tori world.

When I did the subliminal thought for digest #1912, I hadn't read any of
the posts yet and had no idea there was any mention of censorship anywhere
in it. In fact, after I'd sent it out, I'd thought I should have kept that
thought for a digest where censorship was being discussed.

And it turned out it was. Whoa, trippy! Just psychic, I guess.

That's going to weird me out for a while.

Since we are talking about it [again], the thing that bothers me most about
the censorship on WTSF is that they cut the words out of the songs, but
Tori says "fuck" at *least* once that I can recall on the interview portion
of the disc and they didn't bleep that out. I don't remember where, but I
clearly remember thinking that it was unbelievably stupid to censor the
songs when they didn't censor the interviews, too. What, exactly, was the
point? Did they just miss that part, or did they decide that Tori
*singing* a bad word is somehow more damaging to wee minds than Tori saying
"fuck" in the middle of a sentence?

We'll probably never know.
