Subject: oogeldy poogeldy!?
okay, I'm back. again. I REALLY need to be less of a lurker than
I have been in the past.
so my niece will be a sister by May if things go right.. yay!
this is very good news indeed.. and I have a really good feeling that
this one is going to be a boy.. or a boyish girl.. or a boyish boy.. or
a... nevermind.
so YEAH, anyway.. not much is happening, other than that. I'm
busily trying to get things done for my portfolio reel so that I can
finally graduate.. my dad helped me find a potential internship place and
stuff.. and now all I have to do is figure out how to get my school to
count it as school credits and... stuff.
and meanwhile, I'm creatively pent up and frustrated because I'm
sick of having tons of ambition and yet no focus.. I want to get out and
create.. I want to form a little project-on-the-side band and play just
because it's fun.. I want to make music videos for local bands here in
Atlanta.. I'm working on a documentary on one of those local bands for my
portfolio reel--and for them to basically have as a promotional tool as
well..
so I'm doing stuff, and yet I feel terribly held back by my own
creativity--or rather, my lack of focus in a lot of areas. any ideas, you
guys?
Jim: CONGRATULATIONS on the new arrival! :) yayyyy!
and now, on with the reptile-like replies! wheeeee!
Simon said: "total agreement with you and brian about the whole
censorship issue."
glad to hear it. :) though I hope you don't mind me asking--what
are YOUR exact views on it? me as a general set-on-default rule, I'm
totally against censorship--but when it comes down to stuff like what
Tori was saying.. "I'd rather not be stickered and limit my audience
because kids need to hear the message in this particular song, and that
message REALLY isn't 'I like to say cuss words'." I have to agree with
her on *that* issue.. but I really wish she'd released the clean AND
dirty version so I could decide on what I wanted, instead of being held
back by her being told, "oh, no, you can only release either the dirty
version or the clean version."
and... continuing my little tirade here.. Walmart promotes
censorship in my opinion, by not offering the "dirty" versions of albums
along with the "cleaned up" versions.. they ONLY offer the clean
versions.. and that, to me, is.. straight up, censorship. I'm all for
offering dirty *and* clean versions of stuff.. cuz it goes back to the
"be your own censor" thing that I think I babbled about the last time I
posted here.. (if I didn't, then tell me and I'll explain if you need me
to, though I figure it's pretty self-explanatory, isn't it?)
seriously, I kinda wanna debate this with everyone here: do you
feel that it would be more effective if *YOU* were your own censor as
opposed to having a team of people decide what offends you?
*ahem*... so Simon then asked me: "how's school?"
eh.. I already complained at the top of this email.. ;) it's
going fine, but I've REALLY only got my portfolio class left--and I can't
do it until I have a portfolio reel completed and approved by the
teachers. so that kinda sucks. :P
and now for something completely different.. .... um.... me! ...
doing the hula! .... *looks around* ...while standing on my head and
whistling!
..... *hears crickets chirping*
heh heh.. ciao for now, you lovely people! :)
Sincerely, Cyndi S. Crawford

Not much to say just now, but I wanted to welcome Alex to the list. :)
Lately I've been listening to some odd stuff, including the new Bjork,
Velvet Revolver (not sure I like either), lots of old Slayer (South of
Heaven has been on repeat a lot), Death Angel, tons of Megadeth (I think
I have a crush on Dave Mustaine), and even a little bit of Leatherwolf.
Been painting a lot.
LIfe is good.

Subject: response to john's 9/11 post
hi all.
i have been a member of this for a number of years but
only posted once or twice. but after reading john's
post on sept. 11th from the last digest, i felt the
need to thank him for sharing his thoughts and
reflections.
i am a junior in college in western Massachusetts, but
i'm from new york. my father has been a nyc
firefighter for over 30 years and was not physically
injured on sept. 11th but he still is struggling with
it emotionally. our family lost many friends on that
day, and my father had to deal with it everyday he
goes into work.
i was just so glad to read john's post because up here
in western mass, life has gone back to normal. this
was the first anniversary of 9/11 that i did not
attend some kind of memorial service or did not go
home for. there was nothing here in remembrance of
9/11. and i was struck at how normal the day seemed
for everyone besides myself. the town of amherst had
a block party that weekend, and my school had some
kind of concert on the library lawn. it all made me
feel really isolated and strange.
john, i can relate with you about the little details,
like how 9/11 helps to remind you of changing your
brita filter, and i agree how ridiculous it is to
claim that the yankees winning the world series helped
the city, 1) because my family is hardcore mets fans
and 2) you're right - no one was thinking about
baseball
i think about 9/11 everyday. i can so clearly
remember how beautiful that day was in new york, it
was so clear and so sunny. and i am disgusted about
the exploitation of 9/11 - from politicians
especially.
but politicians will do what politicians will do.
but john, i enjoyed reading your post - being a lonely
new yorker out here in the woods of western
Massachusetts, it was helpful to hear from a kindred
spirit.
-theresa.

Congratulations Jim of the Phynn variety on the news of your little one. I
see you've gone for the same name as my second nephew - Harrison. My sister
pushed out my first niece on September 10. She was already a week late and
it's a good thing it wasn't another day.
As digest 1914 was all me, I'm not going to reply to myself but will
comment on this:
*** All Brian (Not To Be Confused With All-Bran) digest ***
Some would say I have the same effect on them.
Jessica decreed in digest 1915:
>i am so tired and yet scared of this election
While we're voting for different governments, it's much the same here.
>people said if he won in 2000 they'd move to canada or if arnold won CA
I heard a lot of people from your country say that in relation to making
the move Down Under. Problem is same shit, different country.
>classes taught me that the media plays to what the majority wants and those
>polls only poll like, 500 people at a time.
If the media didn't pander to the masses, they'd find their
viewers/listeners/readers suddenly migrating to their opposition. When
ratings drop, advertisers don't want to pay as much and the media
organisation's bottom line starts to look a bit shabby. While it's all well
and good to get your views from the competition, chances are the
"opposition" may be owned by the same company, so you can forget a balanced
viewpoint. Media moguls have been known to make or break governments on the
basis of what's in it for themselves. All polls should be considered
questionable and really, there's only one poll that counts - election day.
Jumping to Simon on the media:
>Fox News Channel: wasn't Rupert Murdoch who said "Tell a lie often
>enough and people with believe it"?
I don't know about that, but it seems to be one of his personal mottos and
it's something all politicians hold dear to their hearts.
Simon on health care:
>The providers of some services and resources seem to to
>selective about their clientele based on who's either rich or who has
>insurance that's effectively a blank check for them.
They're a business, just like any other. Just because they're in the job of
health care doesn't necessarily mean the health of the patient is their
number one priority. Even though I live in a country with universal health
care, last time I needed to go to a hospital a friend told me that when
they asked if I had private insurance - lie. It wouldn't have got me
treated any faster and would have left me out of pocket.
>While it's good that so many conditions have a medication that can treat
>them, it does seem a bit crass to resort to the hype. TV commercials that
>go "Got (fill in the blank condition)? Try *our* drug!".
The only thing I found amusing about drug commercials in the U.S. was that
more than half the ad seemed to be devoted to possible side effects.
I must make a clarification about HD TV here. When I say I get 50 channels,
there are really only 7 discrete broadcasters. The 5 free to air networks,
one that covers parliament and TVSN, which I never watched when I had
satellite. All the others are made up of 4 or 5 channels of the same
network that are yet to be used for anything different, like alternate
camera angles in sport. Fill out the rest with regional versions of the
same networks as I'm a fringe dweller.
Now for digest #1916, which probably should have been called:
*** Simon Says (or Simply Simon) digest ***
>one of the more chilling aspects of the '03 remake of
>"Battlestar Galactica" was the manner of the Cylon attacks on the
>humans' homeworlds- nukes instead of laser-armed fighters as was
>depicted in the 1978 original.
Can't say I've seen the remake and I probably never will. I know the use of
nukes in sci-fi is mainly for the purpose of special effects, but you could
achieve the same result by pushing a few decent sized asteroids at a
planet. One thing that gave me chills about the original when I was a kid
was when they stopped off for supplies at a planet which I think was called
Carillon, people were being snatched for food by the local aliens. I wonder
how they treated that in the remake.
>I've been wondering about whether or not e-books are worth the expense.
> Lots of books are in e-book format but what sucks is that *some* are
>only in the exclusive Winblows format and not available for Mac OS.
I still haven't paid for any yet as there's a whole world of free classics
yet to explore, but while you say some only come in Winblows format, some
aren't available in that formal and you need another platform (Palm Pilot)
or third party reader software. It's clearly still an emerging market. One
thing I do hate about e-book stores is that it's nowhere near as easy to
browse like it is in a real store. I'd like to be able to "skim" their
shelves at a glance.
From Lavs in digest 1917:
>Gearing up for Tiarna's birthday (5th - time flies). Soon to be on website.
Already? She'll be dating guys and coming home drunk in no time.
From the ever catching up Simon who's actually nearly there:
>Speaking of cars- and I ask because it's about Australian cars- just
>what make/model was the black "Interceptor" in the first two "Mad Max"
>films. For years I always assumed it was an early 70s Chrysler but
>imdb.com lists it as a mid-70s Ford. Only it's no Ford I've ever heard
>of, unless Ford exclusively sold that make in Australia only.
Just because we have Ford and General Motors (under the name Holden) here,
doesn't mean the models are the same. While I don't really notice cars as
I'm not obsessed with them, I didn't notice any major differences when I
was in the U.S., except maybe for names. When I gave a local newspaper to a
friend in Boston, he was going wild over all the differences. It's true in
that they are more similar in design now than they were in the 70's. To cut
to the chase, Mad Max's vehicle was a Ford. Probably a hotted up Ford
Falcon of that era. We did have Chrysler then but they got absorbed by
Mitsubishi somewhere around 1980.
On school reunions:
>Sometimes I wonder when someone tells you a story like that, are they
>just telling you something interesting or are they trying to make you
>bad about what you've done over the years.
It depends on who it's coming from. There will doubtless be those telling
everyone how fantastic they are. I know from the friend that called it was
genuine, but they could just as easily have had me telling them something
that would have made them jealous. The thing I'll be most curious about
which I saw signs of at the 10 year reunion was those who had it all and
decided to chuck it away for a simpler life. I'm sure there'll be more of
them this time.
While I have gone on the record regarding hating mobile (cell) phones
plenty of times before, I can see their uses, especially due to the
disappearance of pay phones. I would have loved one when I first moved to
where I live now as it was a month before the phone went on and I had to
drive 10 minutes to use a payphone in a shop. But like with everything,
people tend to abuse them. Not a day goes by on the train when I can't help
but hear someone's banal conversation.
Mmmm... we had fresh meat in Alex from Russia. Always good to see a newbie,
especially since it's been a long time since one's outed themselves. Enjoy
your stay and don't be shy.
Woj reported:
> Currently, negotiations are going on between several high profile
> promoters to investigate the possibility of bringing Tori Amos to
> Australia on her next tour.
While I've heard that too many times before, it's actually a good chance at
the moment. There's a glut of international artists coming to our shores,
probably because our dollar is up so fans are more likely to part with
their cash as they can keep ticket prices down. Though that doesn't stop
some of the big names charging whatever they like. I'll sign the petition
for what it's worth anyway, but won't be holding my breath.
