Subject: your own personal junk...er, juke...er, pirate radio in a box

hello again from the arkansaw backwoods--you know, the land of
genetically altered chickens, trailer park-eating-tornadoes, the "we
don't deserve to play in a tournament" Razorbacks, and Wal-Mart.
I got a Mac mini about two months ago, replacing my big Beige beast.
Since then I've been putting all my CDs into iTunes; I'm about halfway
through now (having gotten to J, along with scattered M's, P's, S's,
and a couple from Yes--the first entries were "Amos, Ellen (nee Tori) -
Baltimore" and "Amos, Tori - Y Kant Tori Read", both legacies of the
old Napster). Tori's stuff runs from YKTR to Scarlet's Walk; for some
reason, the first disc from TVAB was copy protected--one of only two
such discs I've encountered so far.
Ironically, Nero Express, on my Big Blew Windoze PC, ripped that CD
just fine, along with the other one ("Astro Bar", a collection of
electronica from Iceland), even sending the ripped tracks through the
network to the Mac. In other cases, I was fighting bit rot--burned CDs
that had deteriorated to the point they sounded awful, like listening
to a busted radio. Again, I suspect the label adhesive had attacked the
dye layer on the discs. A similar issue affects some of my old tapes,
which I'm transcribing (finally!) to digital form; among these are most
of my Thelonious Monk collection. These had received heavy use in the
various cars I've had over the years. One tape, a collection of Bill
Cosby monologues from the mid 60s some 20 years old, was in such poor
shape I had to resort to using a wave editor to fix it (and I'm
considering just buying new CD copies, as I got rid of the vinyl
originals years ago).
Most of the time I just click the "shuffle" button and let iTunes play
automated schizophrenic DJ; the results can be jarring--Steely Dan
followed by Beethoven, Tori, Herbie Hancock, Ministry, Pat Metheny,
more Tori, Stereolab, Anita Baker, Primus, Bjork, Tori again, Debussy,
Ruby3 (from ZBS' "Ruby" series), Yes, Tori one more time, and more
Steely Dan is typical.
If I'm feeling *really* weird, I'll start Lexikon-Sonate (an
"algorithmic composition generator" based on the music of Karlheinz
Essl, which sounds like a drunk torturing an electric piano) or Sound
Of An Image (which takes a picture and feeds it, pixel by pixel, into
the QuickTime MIDI sequencer; the output from this often sounds like
R2D2 on crack). Sometimes I'll even run both, along with the vacuum
cleaner (which sounds like an angry wildebeest), especially if the
neighbors get too noisy. Take *that*, Britney!
It's a cure for the Legal Payola Induced Small Playlist Syndrome
(pronounced "le piss-piss" and spoken with a suitable fake "French"
accent), if nothing else, especially in a place where NPR is not only
disregarded but in some places appears to be actively jammed (yikes). I
suppose I could lash up a portable RF spectrum analyzer and antenna to
track the jammers down, if they exist, but I'm afraid I'd only be led
to the local <insert name of heavily armed extreme right wing
organization> headquarters, of which we have in distressingly ample
supply, along with chickens, tornadoes, Razorbacks, Clear Channel
stations, and Wal-Marts.
Besides, I have the sinking feeling the FCC no longer gives a damn
about anyone except Clear Channel--and their fellow media henchmen, who
may include Apple.
The next logical step is to get an iPod, load it up, and put it in the
car, after figuring out how to wire it into the Bose CD changer
interface (or just get a BMW--yeah, right). Stay tuned.
Kill your radio and bury it next to the TV,
	Estraven.

p.s. Simon, it sounds like you need to divorce your family--you don't
need that &%!#]&$\^!#. Get some legal help soon, before they end up
driving you back to Zaha'dum.

Subject: DC Show... looking for a ticket

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had an extra ticket to the DC show at the
Warner theater they would be willing to sell.
Or if anyone hears of one, even as late as wednesday evening (I live
in DC), I'd love to be able to go.
Thanks!

Jake

them.

Subject: new & upcoming ToriThoughts.org stuff

In case anyone's interested, I redid the entry page for ToriThoughts.org.
The old one was, well ... old. Old and skanky and so 1997, which was
about when I did it.

I wish I had more to say at the moment. Or rather, more time to write.
There's so much going on in Toriville these days, but I'm super busy.
I'm pushing myself hard to update the site to include sections I've been
working on for years, one section having been in the works since 1996
(gah!, yes, really).

Hopefully I'll be able to announce at least one new section in the coming
weeks and you will all jump up and down and sing and I can go take a
much-earned bubble bath or nap or something.

RDTRN's 13th anniversary is coming up next month. Time really flies.

Well, gotta be getting back to work. So much to do, so little coffee.
I hate HTML.
