Oops, this digest should have gone out before the last one. I
missed seeing this one, so gave the previous digest the number
this one should have had. Then I noticed missing posts in
a mailbox where individual posts filter and hunted the digest

Tori Amos Review
by Beth Coulter
special to the Crestiad (Cedar Crest College)

The Beekeeper (Sony/Epic Records)

Piece by Piece with Ann Powers (Broadway Books)

Tori Amos has released her ninth album, "The Beekeeper" in conjunction with
her first book, "Piece by Piece", co-authored by Ann Powers, a former New
York Times and Village Voice music reviewer.

The nineteen track, 79 minute CD is a reclamation of the sound Amos
investigated in her 1998 album "From the Choirgirl Hotel."

Like "Choirgirl", the tracks from "Beekeeper" sound much better when put
into lyric book order (which is vastly different from how it is arranged).

"The Beekeeper", when put into lyric track order, falls into six different
gardens, each with its own message.

>From the "Desert Garden" with its baroque pop story of class separation, war
and how women can smooth the way for growth, to "The Greenhouse", where
resolution is addressed, the gardens lead you to an understanding about the
myths of the world.

Myth, folklore and genealogy explain the world in Tori Amos' new book "Piece
by Piece." Or perhaps it is better to say it explains Tori's world.

It is not the typical biography for a musician. It is more a blue print for
Amos' creative processes.

Ann Powers' engages Amos in a conversation that is arranged into chapters
such as "Corn Mother: Genealogies", "Mary Magdalene: The Erotic Muse", and
"Venus: Creating a Public Self." Each chapter is spiced with "Song Canvas"
mini-chapters that explain some of the songs throughout her career.

Many of Amos' friends, family and crew add their thoughts to the process,
making for a full spectrum about the world of Tori Amos.

This book is an excellent companion piece to the new CD.

Subject: I Am Still Here

It is that time again and I am digesting another Tori album. At Barnes
and Noble they have a life-size cutout of Tori. They at first promised
it to me but they discovered that someone beat me to it. It would be a
neat way to torment my wife by having it in the living room. I went to
another Barnes and Noble and someone had their name on the back. At 64
you can be somewhat strange.

The Senior Buyer at work, Larry, went to the Pittsburgh concert with me
a few years ago. We had grand illusions of seeing Tori in DC during this
tour. We looked in Ticket Master for tickets and all our grand illusions
were destroyed. Prices varied from $200.00 to $350.00. We looked at the
Philly concert and prices were not much better. One of the constants of
Toriís career has been cheap tickets. The tickets were unit priced and
there was a mad rush to get the tickets first to get up front. During
Toriís first tours, she went solo and after expenses, did not make much
per venue and went on long tours to make it worthwhile. Then came the
band and the big amplifiers and large venues to increase the revenue.
The theory now is her fans have grown up, gotten high paying jobs, and
can afford $350.00 to see her perform. (Ha!) I suspect she is going to
take what the market will allow. I did my share to contribute to her
wealth, but this is too rich for my diet.

Two years ago I got into Dead Like Me (DLM) on Showtime. The fans of
that series are about as fanatic as the Tori fans. They cancelled the
series and got their fans totally pissed off. I taped a couple of the
episodes and purchased the first season on DVD. I discovered that I have
generated a group of fanatic fans amongst my coworkers and at church. My
social life now is circulating my copies of DLM to a group of over 30
people. Our Ministerís daughter is one of them. (She borrowed my Tori
DVD and we have another Toriphile on our hands.)

DLM is about a young lady who gets killed but instead of going to the
afterlife, becomes a grim reaper (undead). She is given the time of
death of a person and is present at this time to take their soul right
before they die and watch the soul go to the afterlife.

ìDo you know who I am? I am the one who taps you on the shoulder when it
is your time. Donít be afraid, I promise that she will awake tomorrow
somewhereÖ.But donít be confused, one day I will be coming for you.î

Good grief, Tori has been watching DLM. Where DLM is undefined on the
afterlife, Tori is definitely in the world of reincarnation.

My daughter came have after 16 months in the hospital. She wants to go
back to work at the Laser Lab. This is the event I begged for on the
night of the crisis. Judy is in a wheelchair and can use a walker on a
limited basis.

Have to end.

Subject: poetry should not be easy

Dear Bethey,

It was terrific meeting you last week.

You may have started to convince me to think differently about the
Beekeeper, too.

I don't say "think differently about it" meaning "fall in love with it," I
mean it literally. You told me your theory about listening to the tracks
in a different order, and my first reaction was, "well, why doesn't Tori
just put the tracks in the right order then?"

This really amused me on the subway home. Here I am, a writer of
hypertext fiction, and I'm complaining about the tracks being in a
different order. That's pretty silly.

A friend of mine writes poems. He prints then in tiny tiny type, then
puts the little piece of paper into a sealed clear plastic box, with a
little magnifier. You have to shift the box around to slide the magnifier
over the poem so you can read it. "Poetry should not be easy" is the name
of it, and I agree with that.

Also, I was intrigued with your description of the book as a map of how
she thinks. That would be worth studying.

Hope you enjoyed the rest of your visit.

As B/4,

John

Subject: So, What is everyone thinking?

I'm shocked that nobody is talking about the album or the book. Is
everyone hibernating out there?

Well, for what my opinion is worth: I'm enjoying both!

The book just kicks ass and is helping me make sense out of nearly 14
years of Tori music and what that means in my life and why I've always
been drawn to her so much.

Does anyone else feel that same way? On a weird and bizarre level, we
are very much a like...

I like the album a lot and I see many different influences in it. I see
that working on Mona Lisa Smile has influenced the sound--which is a
good thing. There is a lot of southern gospel and southern jazz in this,
a long with Celtic influences as well. Reading the book and listening to
the album at the same time is definitely helping me to understand both.
If that makes any sense.

I can't believe that this album is getting such mediocre reviews.
Everyone is still expecting her to pump out Under the Pink and Boys for
Pele all over again--which is never gonna happen. She can't ever go back
to that time period again. Tori is all about moving forward in life and
continuing to unfold the mystery of her purpose, and I feel more than
awed to be part of her journey.

        HOWDY everybody! :D

I've been lurking way too damn long. I'm tired of it. I remember when I
used to reply to every single digest that hit my email--and usually RIGHT
AWAY.

and so I wanna kick things off real quick by replying to the lovely Beth
C and Beth W.

Bethey: of COURSE I remember you. I hope the same can be said of the
others ;) but I haven't forgotten you. ;)

Beth W: regarding the "mustard seed" reference in the Beekeeper.. the
first few times I heard the song, I wasn't really able to enjoy it as
much as I do now.. especially after the MSN chat when my question about
it got picked first and she explained that it came about from her mother
barely surviving a cardiac arrest.. the whole "please don't die, please
don't die, please don't die" feel of the song really messed with my head
for about three or four days..
and then I started learning the lyrics.. and the line about the
mustard seed jumped out at me. I couldn't remember what was so
significant about it, but as soon as I did, that helped change the tone
of the song for me.. a little bit at least.. which made it much easier
for me to listen to.
what baffles me is how anyone could think (I saw a review say
this) something like "hmm.. the lyrics said 'call engine 49' and then
they say 'I have come with my mustard seed'.. d'ya think she's talking
about chili?" .... makes me wanna reach into the computer and out of
theirs and sock 'em in the nose.. cuz they aren't paying attention, AND,
given Tori's reputation of being abstract with her lyrics, they're taking
those lyrics to be more abstract than they actually ARE. *pretends to
faint*

anyway, movin' on.. :D my nephew is due to be born at the end of
next month or the beginning of May.. and we're all getting excited.. and
we also *might* possibly be getting a chocolate lab puppy, and I being
hearing impaired, have heard my mother talking about how we should have
trained our current dog to be my hearing ear dog, etc etc.. so I said
"why don't we, if we get this puppy, train her to be my hearing ear dog
instead?"
so, we're considering the options, especially since, what with a
newborn coming soon, puppies are a little bit dangerous. just a little..
what with their jumping-up-on-people habits and their not knowing that
newborn babies are tiny and defenseless, etc.
but that's if we even get the puppy in the first place. :)

in OTHER news, it must be breeding season for us humans, because not only
is my sister pregnant, but her husband's brother's wife is pregnant, one
of my closest friends is pregnant and her step-sister is pregnant. very
exciting times, indeed. and I'm going to be going with my good friend
today to her sonogram. she gets to find out what she's having today..
YAY!

that said and done, I must go and.. skedaddle! *dance*dance*dance!*

Sincerely, Cyndi S. Crawford
"I know we're dying / and there's no sign of a parachute / we scream in
cathedrals / why can't it be beautiful / why does there gotta be a
sacrifice?" -- Tori Amos
