Subject: sit on my face and tell me that you love me

When an entire digest is composed of commercials and gibberish,
it's time for drastic action. So, I'm going to post about
whatever comes into my head. Well, I'll limit it to ten items.

1. Identity theft sucks. I speak from experience.

2. I'm watching "The Concert for George," which was a concert on
the anniversary of George Harrison's death. I don't think I
would have sought it out on my own, but a friend recommended it,
and it's great. A bunch of famous musicians (Clapton, McCartney,
Jeff Lynne, Ringo Starr, Anoushka Shankar) plus some personal
faves of mine that it's nice to see (Jim Capaldi! Ray Cooper!),
but all people who were friends of his, who played with him, who
were involved in his life (not just a parade of famous people, in
other words).

The first half is Indian music (written by Ravi Shankar, and
played and conducted by his daughter Anoushka, who is amazing),
then there's a short Monty Python interlude (not as random as it
sounds, since Harrison was a film producer, including "Life of
Brian" and "Time Bandits"), then the big all-star band playing
Harrison's songs. That part is a little up and down, but the
high points are majestic.

I'll just describe one. Paul McCartney says that when he went to
visit George, sometimes after dinner they'd pull out their
ukeleles and play some songs. One night he told George that
there was one song he liked to play on the ukelele, and he starts
a simple folky version of "Something" (a song I've never been
crazy about), so he sings the first verse just with the ukelele,
and then, after the second "you're asking me will my love grow, I
don't know," all three drummers kick in and it cascades
wonderfully into the original arrangement, strings and guitars
and all.

My friend (who urged me to check it out) did an evening of
Harrison's music at the church where he is musical director. His
thinking was that Harrison's music and life were very spiritually
based (obviously), but in a wonderfully inclusive way, a way that
brought east and west together, and that's a great thing to see
in these days, when east and west are more and more being driven
apart.

And if the fundamentalists (on either side) don't like the
"Hallelujah's" and the "Hari Krishna's" being mixed in together
in "My Sweet Lord," they can stick it.

3. Netflix is cool. Cooler than identity theft. Cooler than
digests full of commercials and gibberish. Cooler than gum
surgery (though now I know the difference between "coronally" and
"apically").

4. Blog updates are usually Sunday night. Sometimes it's a
character sketch, sometimes I answer readers' questions. It's
at http://waldo.u-town.com.

5. Work proceeds on the third novel. I plotted out the next
chapter today when lying in the bathtub (then quickly scurried to
the computer to write it down).

6. It's funny how my Tori universe has narrowed down to the
boots. Cyndi mentioned a song the other night when we were
talking, and I wanted to ask which boot it was on.

7. There seems to be a track meet going on in the apartment
upstairs (which would be odd, since these are not large
apartments), which was puzzing until I remembered that the Super
Bowl started an hour ago. Maybe they're acting out the plays,
like their own version of instant replay.

8. I guess that organizing the concert was the least Eric Clapton
could do for Harrison, since (once upon a time) he stole
Harrison's wife (or least he wrote impassioned love songs about
her, like "Layla," and then she eventually left Harrison for
him).

9. When I die, I want somebody to sing, "Sit on My Face and Tell
Me That You Love Me."

10. A friend said that my writing has lots of female characters
changing sexual orientation apparently at the drop of a hat. I
thought this wasn't really true, but I wanted to be fair, so I
made a list. So, if you care, of my major female characters, eleven
are straight, three are gay, ten are unknown (well, presumably they
know, but the readers don't and in some cases I don't either)
and two are bisexual. That didn't seem outlandish to me.

11. Have I mentioned that identity theft bites?

That's it for now.

As B/4,

John
