Uh, sorry abou that last post. I whine too much, and
I also recant what was said in other postings as well,
because those too were whining and beyond
inappropriate.
It was brought to my attention that it's people like
me that have ruined rdtrn.

Subject: Flight 93
Hey Y'all,
Real quick, as I'm in the midst of finals...
I saw Flight 93 today, and needed to tell you all to go to see now. As soon
as you can, instead of watching your favorite TV program (which can be
taped). Find the time to go and see a powerful movie that has no previews
or commercials.
There were only about 15 people at the Sunday noon showing, but not a peep
could be heard as each of us sat enthralled, each leaning forward at times,
or clutching ourselves because of the tension. I became so angry at the
inaction of the "authorities," who stood around as dumbstruck as the rest of
us. When FAA Ops Manager Ben Sliney (who plays himself, as do many other of
the officials of that day) finally demands all air traffic be grounded, I
said, "Finally! Finally." But it was only after the Pentagon had been hit
that the planes were grounded.
There is no real focus on the individual passengers, you rarely hear their
names. Who the passengers were on that flight were made into one through
resolve to take their destinies into their own hands. Is there poetic
license involved? Yes, some, such as the ending showing the passengers hands
on the wheel. There is no proof they made it all the way into the cockpit.
But overall, what does that matter?
What mattered was the stillness and silence of the 15 of us as the last
scene cut to black, and the credits started to roll. Many of the credits
read "as Himself," noting the fact that many of the people actually involved
with the situation reenacted their roles of that day.
I wish we lived in a society where a conversation would have developed in
the lobby, but then again, maybe we were all a bit in shock as we left.
Music on the radio stuck me as being inappropriate for a few minutes. I
needed the time to reflect, and come back to 2006.
I've heard many pundits say this movie is too soon. I'd like to quote my
friend Henry, who I attended with; "It wasn't too soon, it wasn't soon
enough."
Run, don't walk, to see this movie. 10% of the ticket sales goes to the
United 93 memorial in Shanksville, it has no commercials or previews, and it
will awaken something in you that will be of grave importance come next
November (for those Americans reading this). Let's first remember what it
was that happened in real time (it is about the events of the day, not just
that flight), and then look at where we are.
Lastly, but not leastly, go see what real heroes are. They don't resemble
Superman or hulk Hogan, or even George W. Bush. They look just like you and
me.
Peace in our Lifetime,
Bethey

Subject: Tori posters for sale
Hi folks,
I have a bunch of Tori posters I have collected over the years that I
would like to sell off (otherwise I'm likely just to recycle them).
Here's what I have. If someone wants the lot, that'd be ideal, but I'd
be willing to sell them one or two at a time:
1. TVAB alley shot (like this only vertical:
http://www.cornflakepromises.hpg.ig.com.br/torivenus.jpg ), 18"x24"
2. Choirgirl scan (like this one:
http://www.yessaid.com/pic/toriback-big.jpg ) with name of album,
12"x24"
3. Second Choirgirl scan (like this one:
http://www.yessaid.com/pic/ftch2b.jpg ) with name of album, 12"x24"
4. Tori face poster, same image as this:
http://www.goodrock.com/productpics/shirts/thumbs/s0885.gif , 22"x34"
5. Boys for Pele promo poster of Tori on mattress, but laying on her
back looking happy (not the night shot), 20"x30"
6. Rare promo poster with collection of magazine covers and quotes from
reviews, somewhat damaged but still in decent shape, 11"x32"
Please - make me an offer for one or more (or all) of them. Shipping
tubes and costs on mailing posters are somewhat steep, but we can
negotiate shipping costs later. Please - rescue these from the recycling
bin!

Subject: The day the music died
It must be time for my biannual posting.
It's been a year to the day since I saw Tori play the Sydney Opera House.
Where has all the time gone? Back over Easter I did dig out The Beekeeper
and threw it on the stereo. My opinion of it hasn't changed any in all that
time - it makes nice background music, but that's about it. I still think
the value of an outside producer would go a long way. Most of my Tori
listening over recent years has been bootlegs, as it's live where she
really shines as an artist.
I'm largely unimpressed with anything new in the music world these days.
Male bands/artists have become increasingly homogenized over the last few
years to the point where I can't differentiate between them any more. Even
the female side of the equation is heading that way. I can't tell the
difference between Avril Lavigne, Ashlee Simpson, Kelly Clarkson of The
Veronicas. I will say though I think Kelly has a stunning voice.
All this blandness I still perceive as being the record companies knee-jerk
reaction to all the file sharing that was going on a few years ago. These
multinational mega-corporations only answer to the dollar and the
shareholders, so when they perceived a risk they cut anyone from their
roster that wasn't instantly bankable and haven't taken any risks since.
Record company executives are the last people that should be determining
what we should listen to, as they've long since forgotten that the music
industry is ultimately about the music. It's also interesting to see bands
taking them on over royalties for digital downloads, as the record
companies are taking a cut for "packaging and breakage". That would be fair
if there's something to actually package that can break.
Back in 2002, I was sitting next to a record company exec on a flight from
LA to Seattle who was talking into his cell phone while still on the
tarmac. He was talking about the relative merits of a couple of bands they
were considering signing. His choice was based solely on look. Sure, image
is a big thing in itself, but real talent tends to last longer.
I can't for one say what day it was the music died. My guess is it just
whimpered and crawled away into a corner from a death of a thousand cuts.
I did pick up the most recent Liz Phair offering the other day but one
listen has made me wish I'd kept walking past. Her self titled previous
release while being unashamed pop had more depth. The only thing that has
interested me of late has been The Dresden Dolls. While they're
entertainingly quirky, my interest is more that I met Amanda Palmer six
years ago when she was just a street performer in Harvard Square.
About the only notable thing that's happened in my world in the last six
months was supporting a group of 50 journalists for the Commonwealth Games
in Melbourne at the end of March. A very hectic two weeks was had and I
think it took more out of me than it should have as I've been struggling
with a myriad of minor ailments since. Probably the most amusing part of it
all was sneaking into the VIP seating at the closing ceremony. I could have
thrown a tennis ball and hit any of a number of major politicians or
dignitaries in the back of the head.
That sounds like a very fine though to close with.
*boing*
