Hello,
Simon, about your posts - I'm afraid I have no idea what you're talking
about. I've read your emails, and I thought they sounded like you were
describing your life and thoughts. How is that ruining rdtrn? I don't
understand.
To Brian, I agree that the music industry is extremely bland. I look
for recordings that are offbeat, like Maggie Sansone on the hammer
dulcimer (she has a small independent label - Maggie's Music) and Al
Petteway on the guitar. Al is a really fantastic musician who has
recorded a number of CDs, some with his wife, Amy White. They are
pretty mellow, but they are not necessarily bland, in my opinion.
I also listen to classical music. I really don't know why that's not
more popular, except that I think they do a horrible job of teaching it
in school. I don't like the typical symphonies with lots of strings,
but I really like choral music and piano. Gabriel Faure is excellent.
He composed a requiem in the late 1880's that is my favorite, and he
also composed a lot of beautiful piano music and songs. I like
Kathleen Battle too and Renee Fleming, although I have to admit that
vibrato is an acquired taste for me. I *never* thought I'd like
classical music growing up; I never listened to it, but the mediocrity
or downright awful quality of so much popular music made me start
looking into alternatives. I also like Bach's mass in B minor and the
Christmas oratorio. But I admit, I have a hard time listening to
classical music stations because the heavy-string music, like Beethoven
and some of Mozart and Wagner, bores me to death and I think some
classical stuff is way overproduced; their equivalent of commercial
blandness.
Bringing this back to Tori, I wonder if some of the things she does
reflect her classical training. Not just the way she plays the piano
and other instruments, but the frequent dynamics changes in her songs.
I have to often turn the volume up when she's quiet and then turn it
back down when she gets louder, just like I need to do with so many
classical pieces. I've often wondered if she got so used to that
during her training that she uses the technique as second nature. I
could just see her songs marked as pianissimo and forte.
Anyway, I agree about the Beekeeper. I've tried *so hard* to like it.
But I can't, except as background music as you say. Sometimes when I'm
upset or just not in the mood for something interesting, I put it on,
so it's not like I hate it. But I must admit, I have a very difficult
time listening to it straight through. Usually I skip most of the
songs. In fact, the only ones I really, really like are Martha's
Foolish Ginger, Marys of the Sea, and Toast (most of the time). I like
the Beekeeper sometimes, and Sleeps with Butterflies sometimes, and
Sweet the Sting sometimes, and sometimes General Joy. I think one of
my problems with it is that for my taste, a lot of the song openings
are very uninteresting, so the first 30 seconds of most of those songs
is a chore to get through. So if I'm impatient, I hit the skip button
immediatedly. If I wait it out, sometimes I really enjoy the song, and
sometimes not. It depends on whether I'm in a place where I can
tolerate the music - and it's difficult to try so hard. The thing is,
I agree with a lot of people (and you) who say that if it had been
produced differently, it would have been a much better album. It's the
sense of lost potential that bothers me the most. Her voice is still
great I think, and she can still compose, but it's too much.
I must admit I hate Knickers, even though a lot of people really like
it. It's the melody and the lyrics that get to me. I really don't
like hearing about "the power of orange knickers" and I'm not a prude,
because I love Icicle, for example, but I just think it's tacky. And
that's my other problem with the Beekeeper - the lyrics. Tori resorts
to a bunch of cliches that I know a lot of people have complained about
- like "the sexiest thing is trust" - and the problem is not that the
lyrics are so awful in themselves, but as with any cliche, it gets
really, really old listening to it. So that lyric didn't bother me the
first maybe 10 times I heard the song, but now on maybe the 50th time
(I'm making these numbers up) I just can't stand it anymore - it
strikes me as inane. And that's something Tori's never been before. I
was really disappointed with that.
Speaking of the Beekeeper lyrics, my husband got on Tori's case for the
chorus of Martha's Foolish Ginger. Where she says "if those harbour
lights had just been a half a mile inland, who knows what I would have
done?" He said that harbour lights, by definition, are not inland, so
the lyric makes no sense. Now there I think that's being a little hard
on her. I guess what she's trying to say is that - if there was no
guide to safety she would have been in a lot of trouble - and to me
what she says makes the point just fine.
I also don't like the line in Hoochie Woman about the woman meeting her
needs on Barney's fourth floor. That's clever the first few times, but
again, after I've heard it over and over, it irritates me.
I wonder how many albums would change drastically if the artists tried
listening to their full CDs twice a day for 30 days in a row? I doubt
this would ever happen because once you record, it's not easy to redo,
but that would certainly show the difference between a joke or cliche
or bland song that disappoints after maybe 20 listenings, versus a
great song (like Horses maybe) that still sounds great no matter how
many times you play it.
well, thanks for letting me ramble on. I've been on this list for a
while, but never posted before, I don't think. I'm 37, married, no
kids, definitely a feminist, and I do what I can to support RAINN, and
I love Tori's music - most of the time. I think "Winter" is still my
favorite song of hers.
take care,
Mary Katherine

so.. the Dent has retired, Undented has started, Tori's working
on a new album (last I heard anyway) and RDTRN is way too quiet!
c'mon, people, let's get some discussions going! I haven't helped
any, I know, but let's get something going.
Simon, I hope you don't think you have to quit emailing RDTRN
with updates, cuz I do like reading them. just thought I'd say so. :)
my brother and his wife are expecting their first child--it (I'm
betting it's gonna be a boy, though I don't have any preference one way
or another) is due to be born on new year's day. exciting stuff indeed.
^O^
John Bragazzi and I have been chatting and sharing each other's
writing.. which is always a fun thing to do--I like collaborating with
fellow writers.
I'm going BACK to school (not the Art Institute), only this time
I'm going for a degree in published printed-writing editing as opposed to
video editing since I don't want to get burned out on video editing and I
know for a fact that that's EXACTLY what would happen if I got a job at,
say, CNN, doing other people's work instead of what I want to do.
this, however, means me moving out of the house and living on
campus for the first time in my 24 years of life, and to be honest, I'm
quaking in my boots. I'm eagerly looking forward to it, but I'm quite
scared at the same time. so does anyone have any advice for a young
whippersnapper like me who is staring down the barrel of a gun named
"Life"?
Stoney, my dog with cancer, is still alive, amazingly enough,
though it's getting to be "crunch time" so to speak. I'm convinced,
however, that his adopted brother, Max (who is mostly Labrador), is
actually helping prolong his life by being so playful with him.
my nephew Landon turned one on the 30th of April, and he, his
sister Bailey and their parents moved out of my parents' basement and
into an apartment about an hour and a half south of us. fun times all
around.
let's see.. um.. that's pretty much it. oh, I've rewritten a few
of my stories. you can check some of them out in the scraps section of my
DeviantArt page, but my most recent work that I'm STILL working on, I've
given up and broken into chapters as actual full-on deviations. give 'em
a peek and if you like what you see, leave a comment. I'm dyin' for
feedback here! here's the URL: http://ciarablaze.deviantart.com/
and that's all for now. :) I need to post more often, I know. we
ALL do. I miss this place being active!
Sincerely, Cyndi S. Crawford
