I hope he doesn't get any funny ideas along the lines of stopping this amazing service he provides us, because I am of a mind that this is an invaluable service to those of us on the list who are interested in seeing anything in print that we can, but couldn't otherwise always know about and get copies of the various publications we need. Will works for a subscribable online media database called DIALOG, and the things he culls out from it and sends in would cost a small fortune if any of us were trying to get them ourselves at the going rate. Things seem to be slowing down a bit here, so I hope that those who aren't interested in reading the unique gems with which Will provides us, won't mind terribly if they have to skip through the unwanted content so that those of us who are INCREDIBLY grateful to him for this service can continue to profit from his efforts. Will, I can't possibly tell you what this service means to me. Thanks. I hope Tori appreciates it. Yes, I trucked down to Tower Records and stood in line in an alleyway in the freezing cold for a half hour, to walk in and find that TicketMaster SCREWED UP. The Tori tickets weren't accessible and you could only buy tickets for James or the Pogues. Well, things finally did work out, and I purchased my five tickets. Ok, some one else who is going to the show (3/20@UW), will you please convince me that the "BALCRC" code does NOT mean Balcony? I was the fourth person in line. I find it very hard to believe that I was shoved to the balcony that quickly. I really wanted a ticket code that read something like "MS-AMOS'S-LAP" or something. Oh well. God, and since when is the TicketMaster surcharge $4? Hmm, really shouldn't bitch so much. After all, I am seeing Tori again. Much luck to all imminently purchasing tickets! You should call the outlet to find out their policy and make sure that you're the first in line, or try to find an outlet with multiple ticket terminals. I had the pleasure of visiting a record fair yesterday, and on that occasion I managed to get my grabbing hands on two Tori bootlegs. (I also came across "Whole lotta Teen Spirit", but by then it seemed redundant, besides, my means were limited, financially speaking.) The first was "A message for your heart", which, If I'm correct has been talked about on this list. It contains HP, Crucify, SATY, Precious thing [sic], TIYH, Whole lotta love, Winter, SLTS, and again SATY. Upon listening to it at home, I noticed the sound on this CD is quite good, except for the piano, which sounds somewhat distorted. It can be irritating. A question: The cover says: 'Captured live in Toronto, "Phoenix club", october 1992. Does anyone know the exact date? Also, it sounds like a radio show. Does anyone know if my suspicion is right? The second has not been mentioned before, to my humble knowledge. I bought it after doubting a little if I should, but I am glad I did. It's the bootleg to end all other bootlegs...! (Well, except for maybe 'Pieces of me', with all those rare tracks, which I'm still looking for BTW. If someone knows where to order it, please contact.) It's called "White horses", a ReaLive recording, released in Germany, cat.no. RL CD 34. (Postfach 304348 / 20314 Hamburg / Germany ) It's a Digital Soundboard recording from a concert in Boulder, Colorado, 29/09/92. The applause is sometimes faded away, so that leads me to conclude this is maybe also a radio recording? Anyway, on this disc, duration almost 75 minutes, she performs Crucify, SATY, PT, HP, Leather, Upside down, LE, Whole lotta love, MaaG (and bautifully too - you can just hear an echo on her voice, which gives the sound more 'depth'), Winter, SLTS, Mother, China and Song for Eric. No flaws in the sound during the songs... it's excellent! Such a beautiful bootleg, I'll probably never get over it. An 8-page booklet is also included, with 3 pages text, which I'll tyranscribe if anyone's interested. This is beauty folks, and all moral objections aside, this is one I advocate to all bootleg-buyers. Marcel. ................................................................ She was most definitely _not_ anything but remarkably slender when I met her, and she looked pretty thin on the Friday Night NBC performance. Unless she had a few dozen Twinkies in her pocket that night, I'd say that it was merely an illusion. I got the pictures from the aformentioned Tori meeting back a few days ago. Tori and me, wearing ridiculously huge smiles. I don't remember the part about our faces touching...but then, I don't remember many of the details of that afternoon, either. ;-) As for giving Tori an RDT shirt--I vote with Stacey. Even _if_ Tori wouldn't wear a shirt with her own picture on it, she could give it to Eric or someone. I'm sure _he'd_ wear it. Lucky bastard... Kent Wolgamott Tori Amos, Under the Pink, Atlantic Call Tori Amos the Carole King of the alternative rock set. Only this piano woman's songs are not pop evocations of love, but reflect darker, more personal themes. Amos delivers those songs in a husky warble that is frighteningly convincing with its halts and shudders. And, with the thick group arrangements of her debut 'Little Earthquakes' largely stripped away, the music has a gripping starkness. That is particularly true on the tracks made up of only Amos' voice and piano, as "Icicle" deals with rape while the delicate "Bells For Her" finds two childhood friends looking at what messes their lives have become. Although "Cloud on My Tongue" is romantic, most of the themes here are turbulent: Amos looks at lies and manipulation on the catchy "The Wrong Band," explores loneliness and even confesses a desire to do in "The Waitress." "Under the Pink" never really rocks out. "God," the first single, is a rhythmic plea for love, while "Past the Mission" and "Cornflake Girl" use percussion to liven things up. Mostly Amos aaims at quieter, more intimate territory, and her lyrics and phrasing ensure that she hits deep inside. We're thrashing out details (primary one is finding a host and a list-owner willing to put in all the time taking care of the list. I'm sure everyone can appreciate the amount of time Anthony sinks into RDT...), but when it's up we'll tell everyone and you won't have to put up with the Gaiman chat. If the shirts are relatively cheap, I'll buy the Marked-for-Tori one. If nothing else, it will make a great souvenier for her to show her grandchildren. (Yikes... There's a thought.) I'm sorry if this has already been asked, but I haven't been reading entire digests. What is the track listing for the PGY single? And is it going to be domestic? PGY is one of the best tracks on UtP, imho. ________________________________________________________________________ Steve Cook sbc@explorer.clark.net "I know that mess spelled backwards is ssem and I felt much better armed with that knowledge." -- Tori Amos, introduction to _Death: THCOL_ -------- Next Message -------- [top] >From rdt-owner Sun Feb 20 22:13:59 1994 Date: Sun, 20 Feb 1994 21:02:06 From: weichel josh <wjosh@nde.unl.edu> Subject: Shirts update Mime-Version: 1.0 I need some help...I have addresses for the following people, but no orders... Sorry folks, we didn't have any prior warning of this performance. We only caught it because a friend called when he heard her mentioned at the start of the show. Although she wasn't wearing the same outfit I would guess that she taped this the same day that she did her appearance on Leno. Her performance was superb as usual although I expect her to do even better once she has had some more rehersal time. She's supposed to spend most of this coming week on rehersals leading up to the opening of the tour on Thursday. No real changes to report on the tour schedule. The venue for the April 18 show in Milan has been changed to the Nacionalle. Rumor has it that there may soon be some changes to the dates at the end of April/beginning of May. We'll let you know about that as soon as we're able. Those who have called Ticketmaster and been told that they have no information about tickets for Tori shows should try calling the box office at the venue. Evidently tickets for some of these shows will be sold only through the box office. Symphony Space in New York is one example. Tickets for Symphony Space will be available only at the box office or by phone March 3rd. The box office phone number is (212) 864-5400 but I wouldn't bet on being able to get through. These shows are going to be *tough* to get tickets for. We've had several calls on the news line this afternoon telling us that the San Francisco show sold out in just over *five* minutes! One person was fourth in line at a ticket outlet and ended up in the balcony! The best strategy is probably having someone in line and someone on the phone. The more people the better. You won't have any problem getting rid of extra tickets. Anyone who wants a complete list of tour dates can get it by sending email to: tour@bsbbs.columbus.oh.us What you put in your email doesn't matter, you'll automagically be sent a tour date list in response. Thank goodness that most of our subscribers here seem to finally have their copy of Really Deep Thoughts #5. We've really had a terrible time getting these delivered. Since this was our biggest (and most expensive) issue yet we decided to save some money by presorting the US 'zines and sending the bulk mail. When we talked to the post office about this they didn't give us any indication of what we were in for. We expected them to take a bit longer but now we find that third class bulk mail is treated as totally expendable. The post office would just as soon throw it away as turn it around to read the address label. If there is anyone out there who *still* doesn't have their fanzine please send us email at rdt-ed@bsbbs.columbus.oh.us. Needless to say this will be the last time we use third class mail for anything that we actually expect to be delivered. You really do learn something new everyday in this. We're really sorry about the delay. Fortunately we sent out Updates with US tour info first class and most readers seem to have gotten them in time to go after tickets. We've also been updating our telephone News Line with information about when tickets are going on sale so we appreciate people sharing that information. An update with the European dates is in the works. The good news is that mail has been pouring in from our address appearing in the liner notes. We hope that the jump in subscriptions will allow us to continue to produce issues like #5 for the $15 and $20 that we have been charging. If not we'll have to either hold the line at 24 pages or increase our price a bit. A couple of weeks ago Tori visited Cleveland for some promotional appearances and we were invited to a luncheon at the WEA office that she was visiting. Most of the other people there were from record store chains but most of them were also big fans. The copies of issue #5 that we took along got a great response, including an offer to provide some much needed photos. Tori was introduced around the room with lots of hugs as always. She remembered quite a few people from other events and tried hard to remember some others. Everyone got her undivided attention during their time with her. Originally they weren't going to have her sit at a table and sign autographs but there were so many requests that they decided to anyway. Tori signed a color piece by Pauline Stuckey (which we haven't been able to use yet) and was in awe of the detail in her work. Since we were sending the signed copy to Pauline Tori asked that we send another copy to her. I can't think of any higher compliment. Tori was also excited about a T-shirt design for the Really Deep Thoughts fanzine done by Ray Caramanna. We asked permission to offer the T-shirt to RDT subscribers but there are complications. The company producing the tour T-shirt (Brockam) has exclusive rights to Tori's image on a T-shirt. Although they felt that Brockam might be willing to give us permission for such a limited purpose we decided to hold off for now. After the tour we will have more subscribers to make the offer to and Brockam may be more likely to give permission. We weren't able to get our vinyl copy of _Under the Pink_ in time to take it along so we took our CD. Tori seemed somewhat amused that we were still having things signed but what the heck. :-) Tori told one WEA rep that she would have liked to have spent the whole afternoon there but time flew by and she was soon stolen away by the Cleveland Plain Dealer and then left for her radio appearance. The radio performances were great but the DJ seemed to know very little about Tori. He seemed to think that YKTR was still available. We tried to tape the appearance but reception in the car left quite a bit to be desired. As for the question of digest/bounce list/newsgroup, I have to agree with those who find the digest too difficult to deal with. It would be nice to find out if it would be possible to move the bounce list to one of the public list servers that Stu Castergine mentioned. A gated newsgroup would be a reasonable alternative but I do think that it would change the nature of the group. But let's have a quick reality check, I doubt very much that we will get a group in the mainstream news hierarchy. There are too many people that fight every newsgroup proposal for an individual artist. As woj mentioned, only one group has succeeded at that in recent history and groups with a much larger following that Tori's have failed. The net result will be that we will have no choice but the digest for three or four months while we go through the voting process and then end up having to do something else anyway. A public list server or a gated alt group are probably our only real options. "Don't drive too slowly."
