It's rather like the other article she did for them...WAY more interesting than the sometimes silly weirdness she puts out for Rolling Stone interviewers and the like. Quite a nice insight - - rather, a further insight - into her musicwriting psyche. Sometimes I can tango with a pen or paintbrush, but not with the insistence of her songbabies. We should all be blessed with a relationship of that depth. I just had something I wanted to share. One day while leaving work I walked out to my car with another individual. I was on my way to see Tori perform, and was asked, "Who's Tori Amos?" Well, I brought my UtP CD to work today, and Al and his co-workers gave it a listen. When he gave it back to me, he said it was interesting, and that there was some really good poetry going on with the lyrics. :-) He also said that if he had not been following along with the lyrics, all the songs sounded pretty much alike (to each their own). He did say that he wants to give LE a listen. I thought these were interesting comments from someone who didn't have any clue about Tori Amos. In any event, it was fun to walk past his lab and hear UtP, and it was a good feeling for me to be able to expose some people to Tori's music. On the subject of covers, I have thought long and hard about what I would like to hear and why. Here are 2 suggestions: 1) RED DRESS by Laurie Anderson from *STRANGE ANGELS* 2) TEMPLE by Jane Siberry from *WHEN I WAS A BOY* Why do I want Tori to try these songs? Both of these songs deal with passion and desire, but are originaly sung in a somewhat dispassionate fasion (no flames please, it's just one person's opinion). I think Tori's vocals on these songs could intensify and bring new meaning to them, and her solo piano work would radically re-color the original sound of the song (both highly electronic in their first versions). I must confess I like these songs, but they aren't my all time favorite songs, even by these artists. I think that Tori is enough of a genius to pick songs to cover that take her outside her emotional world, and that surprise and electrify the listener by making something very old seem very, very new. In picking these 2 songs, I tried to think like she would, and I might have failed. I would be very curious if someone from Atlantic or in her organization would read this and mention these songs to her and see how close I came. It is a longshot that this would really happen, but I can dream. Unless the IRA have dramatically changed their tactics they don't plant bombs with the intent of ripping people's clothes off so they can see their underwear. What Tori is talking about is a simple exhibitionist fantasy. Millions of people are excited at the *idea* of "getting caught" in some compromising situation even though most of them would never in a million years *want* to get caught. > My point was that being exposed in your underwear, against your will, in > public is a very ugly and brutal thing. Tori presented it as every woman's > fantasy. I think it's obvious on the face of it that she's exaggerating for the sake of humor. She does that all the time. I hope you don't really think that she believes that it is, in fact, *every* woman's fantasy. If your entire argument is against exaggeration for comic affect you should try one of those nice herbal teas. :) The real fact of the matter is that millions of people fantasize about lots of things that if they were to take place *for real* would be ugly, degrading, brutal or whatever. Some people even act out those fantasies with consenting adults. Tori has talked about that, too (her friend the dominatrix, scalding their weinies, etc). Saying that people shouldn't talk about these fantasies because they're "wrong" is exactly the kind of sexual repression that created these fantasies to begin with! > I guess my central problem is that based on "Me and a Gun" I believed Tori > cared about the issue of women and violence and the underwear story left me > feeling otherwise. I'm sorry that you feel that way. The truth is that there is no way that I can express in words just how deeply Tori cares about this issue. Tori has heard thousands of deeply personal accounts from victims of sexual violence, but she is still moved to tears when she talks to these people. We've talked to Tori about this at length and there is absolutely no question that she is completely sincere. She wants to do more to help these people than she is physically or emotionally able. That's why she started the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network. She can't be there personally to help all the people she has touched, but she wants to make sure that someone is there for anyone who needs help. I could list them later if requested. It was listed at $17, but I remarked that that was steep for a 7 song CD so he knocked it down to $14.
