Subject: Introductions etc

I have been a little reluctant to join the party (somehow I always have an
excuse for why I'm too busy to post anything these days) but after sitting
on my hands for the last 15 minutes trying to figure out what to write, I
think it's time to just let things flow out of my head and see where it
goes.

My name is Greg, 28 years old from Pittsburgh PA. I've been a Toriphile
since mid-1994 (around the time that UtP was released). I actually heard
about Tori on a couple of newsgroups I was reading at the time
(rec.music.gaffa for sure, can't remember the others) but nothing really
'clicked' until my sister showed up with a copy of UtP for Easter that year
as a present for me. I had just discovered Enya - the slight bit of peace
I got while living in the dorms - and one of her friends had told her that
Tori sounded like Enya. To this day I don't get the association, but
anyway, it was a good thing :)

It was just this past March that I finally saw Tori live, after not having
the money for concerts until I graduated in 1998 and then work being too
uncertain for me to plan anything in advance for quite a while after that.
I finally just took a couple days after the concert off so that my boss
couldn't send me anywhere and make me miss the concert :)

My degree is in Electrical Engineering, from RIT, and I work in tech
support for a company that makes audio conference bridges. My job makes me
grouchy so I don't talk much about it. I'm currently on the hunt for
something more interesting and less stressful, but it's slow going out
there as I'm sure many of you know.

I live in a little rented house with my girlfriend and my adopted step-dog.
The dog of course runs the place, likes Tori, and had to be brought by car
from El Paso, my girlfriend's previous residence. In June we drove from
Pittsburgh to El Paso. We learned that yes, Super 8 is not as nice as
Fairfield Inn, Hope Arkansas (hometown of Bill Clinton) has the world's
worst Sonic, and that any place in the south that says "All you can eat"
*will* be crowded, regardless of the place or the time.

Other things I like (in no particular order): road trips, coloring, trains
(model or otherwise), Monopoly (I collect Monopoly variations), Anne Rice
novels, Anne McCaffrey novels, GNU/Linux, people watching, Stockholm and
London, writing poetry (though it has been awhile). In addition to Tori, I
like: Dar Williams, Jessica Weiser, Melissa Ferrick, Vienna Teng, etc etc
etc.

> Okay I'll do my intro in a second but I have a question...who were all
your

when

I can't remember having too many celebrity crushes when I was little -
maybe that's primarily a girl thing??? I had somewhat of a crush on the
oldest Cosby girl (Sandra?), and I can remember looking forward to watching
Growing Pains too because of the older sister (what was her name?). I also
had a thing for Punky Brewster but I don't know if that counts because she
was about my age at the time. Oh, and Rebecca from Cheers. *go figure*

When I was in Elementary school, there was a girl from my class that used
to chase me around the playground. In fact I think that it alternated
between me chasing her, and her chasing me, throughout the whole of the 4
years of Elementary school. Her name was Becca. In 4th grade Becca's
parents divorced and she moved with her mom to Holidaysburg, which is about
an hour away. I moved after 5th grade, but I heard from one of my old
classmates a couple of years later that Becca had returned. I often wonder
what happened to her, and a lot of the folks I went to Elementary school
with - I didn't keep in touch with any of them after I left. I wonder if
any of them is a Toriphile now -- Becca Rosenberg are you out there
someplace?? *checks the Toriphile registry, drat, not there, course she
could be Becca or Rebecca somebody else by now.*

Time for me to run off unfortunately. Many hugs.

Move to 176 keys of ivory firepower as Lottapianos Tour 2003 pounds its
way into the Tweeter Center Tuesday night. Headliner Tori Amos and
opener Ben Folds - both players of uncommon physicality and each worth
an evening spent - will clobber, coax, caress and ultimately command
rock's most unwieldy instrument in her and his own idiosyncratic
fashion.

Amos is still plugging last year's Scarlet's Walk (Epic), a buoyant
road trip of an album that sometimes pines for pep but rarely wants for
inspiration. Folds has embarked on an EP spree, covering the Cure,
recording with two other Bens, Kweller and Lee, and, reportedly,
working with William Shatner. Oh, the horror. His delightful bitterness
should prove the perfect cut for Amos' gothic catharsis.

I have one ticket for the second row, orchestra pit CCC, that I need to
sell. It's for the Columbia show. I'm asking what I paid for it, $175,
which includes the fees I had to also pay. I can FedEx it to whomever
wants it or bring it to the show as the seat is right next to mine. I
could only buy tickets in pairs and my sister wasn't up for this show,
so I have to sell the second ticket. Just email me if you're interested.

Thanks,

Subject: "New Year's Day"

So! I went to see Tori last Friday, and just had to
give my show review.

To start, I missed a big chunk of Ben Folds performing
because I was enjoying the company out in the parking
lot too much (and I've never been able to get into his
music). So I strolled in for the tail end of his
act... for the last song, he had the audience do this
very cool harmonizing sing-along. It was all
"oooo-OooH" or "ooo-ooo-ooH". It sounded,
like........ uh....

Um, this is really hard for me to explain.

*crickets*

Okay, well, just take my word for it that it sounded
cool as hell-- half the time, artists can barely
persuade people to chant five words at the appropriate
time, and Ben Folds managed to have a whole audience
HARMONIZING! I was pretty damn impressed, and wishing
that I'd gone into the concert a little earlier to see
what else that boy had done. Tori's appearance
onstage immediately made me forget that there was even
an opening act at all, though.

She started with her standard Wampum Prayer-->ASF,
then whipped out the big boys. Sugar, Springtime of
His Voodoo, Bells for Her*, Rattlesnakes, a kick-ass
version of Professional Widow, and lots of other
lovelies. Everything sounded so beautiful and
pristine.

*As soon as she started playing BfH, I guess I must
have looked a bit psycho'ed out, because my friend
asked me what was wrong. I spazzed out with: "BELLS
FOR HER!!!! Nothing! This is grrrreat!" Now I'm the
freak at the Tori show. Fabulous.

Tori also did this adorable improv early on (I guess
it was right after Sugar). She mentioned hitting
"id-ife" and her hubby wishing her a happy birthday,
and she responded with, "I don't feel so cute". And
he goes, "Bring it on, girl." To which she commented
that it seemed too early, and he goes, "Not too
early... Bring it on, honey!"

I love thinking about Tori getting her groove on
before the show. On her birthday, no less. Ah,
priceless.

She did another quick improv after the boys left.
Talking about going back in time, and how she used to
think about the future, and she and Beene would talk
about having kids. It had that bittersweet feeling
that made me feel the deep sighs rising up in my
chest. And then...... Baker Baker. Thank goodness my
friend had wandered up to the lawn to smoke, because I
got all teary as soon as it started. I don't know how
she does it, but that woman can always get an excess
of emotions out of me.

Before the first encore, they wheeled out a cake, and
Ben Folds played "they say it's your birthday". It
was surreal to be there for her onstage celebration,
and then to actually *sing happy birthday to Tori*!
And clap as she blew out her candles!!! Aaah! I feel
like a gushy teenybopper fan! It was so so so cool,
though.

Later on, for her encore, I started getting this
feeling of dread as she was singing Landslide. It may
have been the most beautiful version of it I've heard,
perhaps because the words were so appropriate for the
evening. Now, mind you that I was also getting a bit
of a contact high (my friend gave up on the lawn and
decided to smoke right beside me), and since pot and
Linda aren't the best of friends, I started feeling
all paranoid. Just the way that she was looking at
the audience during the song made me feel that she's
done with touring, or putting out albums, or
something. Now, granted, we're aware that she will be
taking a break, but it still felt very ominous. She
seemed to look long and hard at the audience when she
said, "Well, I've been afraid of changing, 'cause I've
built my life around you." After all, she's centered
herself around being a performer, and the other night,
it felt as though she was saying that it's time for
that to stop. I just hope that it's only temporarily.

As for the dynamics of the show... the set changed
from the one that she was using earlier in the year...
it was a big black backdrop with Stonehenge-looking
medicine wheel at the center with little totems at
each corner. She's really going all out with the
Earth Mother/American Indian thing. Her outfit was
sorta interesting. I didn't like it at first, but it
grew on me. It was one of her standard flowing tops,
but it had huge polka-dots on it. Parts of the fabric
had red dots, and parts of it reveals blue dots. She
looked a bit like a new age Wonder Woman. With that,
she had on denim capris and strappy red sandals. I
wish I could have seen the shoes better-- they looked
(unsurprisingly) sexy.

My boyfriend, the Tori concert virgin, also loved her.
I think he's now been completely converted into the
cult. It was a great show-- maybe not the "best one
of hers that I've been to", primarily because the
audience was more sedate than usual (it was VERY hot
in the auditorium)-- but I can't imagine going to a
concert like that and not being captured by the power
of her performance. Oh! And that beautiful smile!
She smiled a lot that night. I almost forgot to
mention that. :) :) :)

well, okay...

like i said before, i'm jae. it's actually a rather new name to me, but
there's really just one too many jessicas in the world and i'm not a fan of
jess or jessi, so jae it became. i'm 24 and live in sacramento, california,
home of the recall and really horrible media coverage! i'm employed -
rather tenuously at the moment - by a Gigantic Retail Chain Who Has A Big

community college, and with ANY luck will have my AA by december... just
before i turn 25 and lose all semblance of health care. eek! i think i'll
have it then, so. *crosses fingers*

that health care thing is really important, and not just for the normal

i have no siblings, no significant other, hell, not even a roommate... but i
do have two really cute cats who keep me on my toes and constantly

um... what else? i'm sure those basics have bored you, but if you have any
questions, feel free to ask. i'm a fairly open book. :)

Tori Amos shows it's her night to howl

By Sarah Tomlinson, Globe Correspondent, 8/26/2003

Tori Amos conjured many moments of delicate beauty with her ethereal
voice and elegant piano playing during the Boston stop of her
Lottapianos Tour at the FleetBoston Pavilion on Sunday night. But from
her famously provocative postures to the British invasion-style screams
that filled the sold-out arena, this was no understated recital. Amos
came off as more rock star than chanteuse.

Amos began her career-spanning two-hour set with "A Sorta Fairytale,"
looking relaxed and happy as she entered to a sultry, calypso-tinged
beat played by bassist Jon Evans and drummer Matt Chamberlain. The song
gained intensity as Amos's voice nimbly ascended from frail prettiness
to animal howl. Colored spotlights, wafting smoke, and drifting
projections set a graceful mood well-matched to her music. With her
trademark fiery hair, Amos glowed at the center of the stage.

Even more than her elaborate trills and pounding bass notes, Amos's
tough, silvery voice held court. She sounded flirty and fragile on
"Professional Widow," creating drama with her hand gestures as her
voice topped rippling piano and rattling drums.

"Father Lucifer" became a funky rocker with an elastic bass line as
Amos played her electronic keyboard and piano together, perched on her
bench as if it were a horse. The fervent piano opening to "Cornflake
Girl" elicited a roar from the audience, while "Rattlesnakes" began
slow and sultry, then kicked in as a gentle rocker behind Amos's
effects-shadowed voice.

At the set's heart, Amos played solo piano on the mournful yet
resilient B-side "Seaside," with its undulating vocal melody, and her
velvety version of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You."

The trancelike mood was broken by the rollicking "Take to the Sky,"
during which Amos burst into the spirited chorus from Carole King's "I
Feel the Earth Move."

Amos closed with "Precious Things," building the song to rock heights
and rising to work the crowd as she grabbed her crotch suggestively.

The resonant piano and snaking groove of her 1994 hit "God" began the
first of her two encores, which included an intense yet playful "Suede"
and ended with the stripped-down ballad "Your Cloud."

Opener Ben Folds seemed more junior high music teacher than rock star
as he playfully conducted the audience's participation on several
songs. He easily wooed the crowd with his smart, funny lyrics and deft
piano playing on songs including his alternative-rock hit "Brick."

That doesn't make any sense. Whole wheat bread is made with
unrefined flour. It's bread made with bleached white flour
that CAN be unhealthy. I stress "can" because it greatly
depends on whether or not the flour is bromated (bromating
flour strips it of its vitamins--notably vitamins K and A)
and what kind of fat is used in the bread. The standard
supermarket loaf is full of transfatty acids. Bleaching also
alters the nutritional content of flour.

As a baker, I'm an avid supporter of buying and consuming
artsian bread and making your own homemade breads using
organic, unbleached, unbromated flours and whole grains.
(King Arthur flour makes the best flour I have ever used and
it is now readily availabe in whole food markets and many
supermarket chains).

Amen to good bread!

Roxanne :-)
