Subject: Bonzai

Today was a big day in Australian politics, but considering most of this
audience probably doesn't care, I'll keep it brief. I heard a description
of our Prime Minister today - Bonzai - because he's a "small Bush". I
thought that was hilarious and find it infinitely more eloquent than
"arselicker", though that in itself was accurate in its own way.

Kerri returned in #1876 with a statement about Tori:
>she seems jaded, a cubic zirconium carbon copy of herself. i no longer
>feel a connection with her music, she's distant from the listener

I have to admit I've been feeling the same way for a few years now. Having
seen her live in 2001 did spark my interest again, but it couldn't keep the
feeling going. I guess you summed it up perfectly with:

>it seems as if today she's just a corporate entity
>with a following and a chauffeur and a nice pair of shoes.

Money and fame can certainly change a lot of things, but then she's gone
through many changes in her lifestyle over her career as well. I know I for
one I have changed a great deal over the years I've been listening to Tori
and I'd be surprised by anybody who hadn't.

Bethany declared:
>Paris and Nickie Hilton: fucking sluts.
>acutally, strike that.
>fucking rich sluts.

Tell us what you really think. Don't hold anything back now.
Admit it, you're just jealous. Actually, I am too. I won't disagree with
your analysis either.

>still, there is something wrong when any number of balding, fat, wrinkled,
>gray-haired men can be successful in the entertainment industry, and there
>aren't the women counterparts. no wonder we're all so afraid of aging.
>it's because it's practically invisible in this culture.

I saw a story on TV tonight about guys under 30 getting botox injections,
to which I could only shake my head. I think the thing we've really got to
keep in mind is that the entertainment industry is largely based on
fantasy while trying mirror reality. I think you only find mirrors like
that at amusement parks. But when these images are spread across the whole
spectrum of media and entertainment, it's no wonder perceptions are skewed.

I think this largely covers what Lavs was saying, but if it doesn't, the
next bit will.

Jim wrote in #1877 regarding looks of women in music:
>That being said, there is a woman (I guess you can call her that now),
>whose popularity I admit I don't understand, whom I consider extremely
>unattractive.

While your answer was Britney Spears, I'm glad you clarified by actually
listing physical attributes, otherwise I would have thought you were
referring to her personality. I consider Elle Macpherson to be completely
unattractive as a person, yet I can still see what other guys like about
her. But by the definition I made in my original question, Britney would
have to be ruled out as too many guys do consider her physically attractive
and would want to fuck her, dead or alive.

I'll certainly take on board your thought about how you won't see famous
women in public without their makeup, so it's a lot easier to cover flaws
which in turn does skew public perception. But you can find unattractive
male personalities that use makeup - Alice Cooper for example.

Being beaten with an ugly stick at birth can in itself be a path to fame
for men. John used Karl Malden as an example. There's a nose that probably
launched the career of a thousand plastic surgeons. Severe acne scarring
can almost guarantee a man a career as a bad guy. But when you see women in
roles where they are supposed to be unattractive, it's usually an
attractive woman with makeup applied to make them look bad. I've been
watching season 5 X-Files episodes where they did use unattractive extras
of both genders, but that was to achieve a particular feel.

Yes Cyndi, that was a really old reply.

So has anybody got any impressions of the "new" album?

Brian

Smoke Screens

The O.J. Simpson trial seemed to go on forever and gripped the nation.
However, in the end it introduced the nation to one of the greatest secrets
of our legal system. The secret is the smoke screen. You are a lawyer
facing obvious facts against your client and he is paying you millions. To
win, you bury the jury with details that really have nothing to do with the
obvious. They have all these details to find inconsistencies and bingo, you
win, become famous and collect your millions.

The sad fact is that society is constantly subjected to smoke screens.
These smoke screens can go on for 20 or more years until some historian
finally does a study and corrects history. By that time those that started
the smoke screen are out of power and the public no longer cares. Some
parts of history never seem to get corrected. In the 30's the American
Communist Party had a million members and was responsible for the unions
getting in power in the automobile industry. Millions of union members have
benefited from this victory but the history books are totally silent on this
subject.

President Bush carries on for months about weapons of mass destruction in
Iraq. Bush tells the world he will not invade Iraq unless he gets other
allies other than England. Next he says he will not invade unless the
United Nations agrees. He gets neither and he invades anyway, kills
thousands of Iraqis, blows up much of the country, and spends untold
billions. No weapons of mass destruction were ever found. The obvious
facts are that we downright invaded them and have an army of occupation in
the country. Now we can't figure out why is there is so much blood and we
are not liked over there. Is my memory of recent history misguided? It is
not mentioned in the media at all. Is there a smoke screen going on? Are
we are not to see the obvious and accept the present media coverage
forgetting what happened just 9 months ago?

Tori has a new album out now and sometimes I get the feeling this whole
effort is really a easy way out of a lifetime contract Tori had with
Atlantic records. Atlantic records gets income from something they already
paid for with minimum investment. Tori does a month of heavy promotions
without a long promotional tour and is free from Atlantic records also with
minimal effort. Is all the hype creating a smoke screen for what is really
a settlement for exiting a lifetime contract?

For 20 years I have been involved in UFO investigations with a group headed
by Stan Gordon. We have listened to thousands of cases of unexplained
sightings through the years and most of them can be easily explained. Once
in while, we get local cases of people seeing large object flying right
over. We tell them that others have seen the same objects and we have no
rational explanation. The witness's life is changed forever. Many others
have seen things close up but never told anyone. For many years I manned
our mall show. Many have told me stories they kept hidden for years. Two
years ago I investigated a crop circle near us and still have not determined
a rational reason for what I saw.

During each meeting, we always get into a discussion on the Kechsburg case.
Kechsburg, PA is only a few miles from Greensburg where I now live. In 1965
an object came down on a warm winter evening. I have personally talked to
over 30 people who saw a slow moving large object come down that night. I
was living in Cleveland, OH and was not a witness. The media reported it
was a meteorite and a few people from the government came over and left
finding nothing. Over 30 years, Stan has dedicated his life trying to prove
it was no meteoroid that came down that night. Several witnesses saw a
large military force. Stan has collected massive amounts of witness
accounts that point to more hocus-pocus than you can shake a stick at by the
military. Unsolved Mysteries did a special on it about 10 years ago. A few
weeks ago the Science Fiction channel did a two-hour special on it. At last
Stan is getting the publicity to maybe get a solution to the riddle: "Just
what did come done in Kechsburg?" I was at Stan's house that night and we
were in obvious celebration that the story was finally getting full coverage
on national TV.

If any of you saw that special I would be interested in hearing from you.
It tells a fascinating story and logically takes you to the same conclusion
Stan came to 35 years ago. Meteorites do not come down at a slow speed,
brake off treetops, and make a soft landing. The program shows that there
is a smoke screen of silence going on. The question is whatever came down
in Kechsburg worth a 35-year smoke screen. The cold war is over and if it
was Soviet why the secret now. If it was American, likewise why is it
secret now. One conclusion is that it was alien and this will explain the
extensive smoke screen.

I did an article on the UFO seen a few years ago. I presented the opinion
that aliens were watching Earth's TV programs 35 light years from here. The
TV programs left gaps in the lives of humans and the aliens came here to
fulfill their curiosity. Among other things I wondered if all these nuclear
weapons that were put in place the last 40 years were not really about the
cold war but really a sort of a golden umbrella against a potential alien
invasion.

I have been involved in these UFO cases for 20 years. Can all of these
people be seeing things that were part of their imagination or mistaken
identification? I am wondering to the conclusion that at least some of the
witnesses are seeing something alien. I wonder if the answer to all these
sightings is obvious and we are part of one of the greatest smoke screen in
history. I worked for a company 20 years ago that had an interesting
technique to deal with their union. If they intended to install a new
policy, they would leak it to the union through the grapevine. When the
policy was installed, the leak made the installation a lot smoother. (If
the union would voice strong objections, they simply did not install it.)
Maybe the media is giving us a glimpse behind the smoke screen with a
continual flow of science fiction programs such as "Taken", "Close
Encounters of the Third Kind", . They condition society and if someday they
withdraw the smoke screen, society will be prepared.

Maybe 20 years from now some historian will do an investigation and blow the
smoke screen. But the public will not react with disinterest. Maybe they
will be conditioned but in any case it will be the biggest story in history.

Have to end.

Jim Mathers

Footnote:

Someday when you clean blackberries and one gets up and runs away, it
probably was not a blackberry afterall. Blackberries have not reached that
state of evolution. Maybe you have experienced an alien encounter and didn'
t know it!
