  [ =======================>  In RDT History  <======================= ]

On June 14th in 1994, irritation about the lack of discussion
     on Tori's music:

So...does anyone want to talk about the _music_, or should
we continue to bicker endlessly about "lemon pie?

[What this person was refering to was discussion of the
instrumentation as opposed to discussion of the lyrics, because
there was quite a bit of the latter going on. (And of course
now, finding a discussion on either thing here is rare.)]

In 1995, the use of the Navajo language for top secret messages
     in WWII.

In 1998, we were discussing sex (so what else is new?). Also,
a member asked "are you suuure 'lord of the files' is a typo?"

In 1999, a few people were discussing whether Tori had recorded
     her most significant work yet.

In 2001, the start of a thread on the Timothy McVeigh
execution, and (separately) Puppetry of The Penis made an
     appearance.

  [ =======================>  In RDT History  <======================= ]

On June 15th in 1993, there were a couple of posts about
emotion in Tori's studio recordings and live performances, with
     one member commenting:

IMHO, it seems that the concerts allow her more freedom to
express the songs ~exactly~ as she feels them at that
moment, which gives them a kind of raw energy quality, and
        to me, more life.

In 1994, the lyrics from the 'Bitchin' t-shirt were posted. And
     someone posted

I've managed to speak to her sound engineer, Mark, at both
Boston shows this year. He's very nice, and he said that
they record every show just in case."

Also, one member tried to describe a particular piano solo
     thusly:

It sounded like a garbage truck with square wheels rolling
unevenly, gracefully, and inexorably downhill. That's the
best description I can think of. Of course, that description
covers most of her solos, I guess....

In 1995, quite a bit of detail on pre-Christian crucifixion.
Someone posted "TOP 10 SLOGANS FOR AN RDT T-SHIRT," with their
#1 being : "Unsubscribe me". And as anextra-added-nastiness
bonus, the ever-popular Hobbes proceeded to purposely re-post a
complete unedited digest back to the list, infuriating members
and kicking the general Hobbes-hatred up several more notches.

In 1996, discussion of Alanis's 'You Oughta Know".

In 2000, we had a revival of the "elements of each album"
     theory, incorporating TVAB.

Subject: rainy days and mondays really get me down

in the last digest i foolishly wrote the following to daniel:

"look forward to seeing you again in the semi finals."

ooops. and we nearly waved bye bye the italians today too. question - how
many of our US readers actually give a flying fuck about the world cup?

songs about rain, good question. well done, by the way, to e who
mentioned "sometimes", which as you say is a fantastic song. anyone have any
idea why it's subtitled "lester piggot"? seems totally random to me. anyway,
here's some possibilities:

"no rain" by blind melon
"rainmaker" by sparklehorse
"black sheets of rain" by bob mould
"green and grey" by new model army (thunderstorm noises at the start, and "i
get to spend a rainy mile thinking of you" - one of the greatest songs ever)
"running in the rain" also by new model army
"i'll take the rain" by rem
"get off of my cloud" by the rolling stones (tenuous at best, i know)
"raindrops + sunshowers" by smashing pumpkins
"caledonia rain" by rev hammer
"london rain" by heather nova
"dry lightning" by bruce springsteen ("her appaloosa's kickin' in the corral
smelling rain, there's a low thunder rolling 'cross the mesquite plain")
"the angel" also by springsteen ("madison avenue's claim to fame in a trainer
bra with eyes like rain")
"why does it always rain on me?" by travis
"raindrops keep falling on my head" by manic street preachers (among others)
"rain whistling" by james
"storm 3000" by leftfield
"mysteries of the unexplained" by tanya donelly ("sometimes it rains fish")
"the storm" also by tanya donelly
"comme j'ai mal" by mylene farnmer ("je serai l'eau des nuages")
"it can't rain all the time" by jane siberry (from "the crow")
"prayers for rain" by the cure
"pictures of you" also by the cure ("remembering you standing quiet in the
rain, as i ran to your heart to be near")
and of course...
"raining blood" by tori / slayer

sorry, i never intended for this list to be quite so long... anyway, i was
thinking - how many songs do we know with "angel" in the title? i mean, i
know
songs called simply "angel" by belly, throwing muses, kirsty maccoll, luscious
jackson and sarah mclachlan, as well as "miller's angels" and "angels of the
silences" by counting crows, "city of angels" by 10000 maniacs and
springsteen's "the angel" as i referred to above - there must be dozens of
'em.

i'll be shutting up now

matt

ps "rain and snow" by be good tanyas

No! More surveys! They're usually interesting to read, so as long as the
person writing them puts some thought into them. Even though I don't fill
them out, I like them all the same.

In other news, today I read Douglas Adams, had a sandwich, played in a
fountain, saw a movie, got dizzy while watching said movie, looked at fish,
checked myself out to infinity in a triangle of mirrors, and then cashed
around some exotic and endangered birds while making foolish bird noises.

All in all, not a bad day's work for it being only 7 pm. But now I'm
strangly tired and I want to go upstairs and listen to music and daydream
about conquering demon hoards and faerie trickery being brought down upon
the sad and sniveling streets of New York.

I bought the Rasputina Album "Thanks for the Ether" yesterday at Borders.
My review of the album is such:

The album was okay, but it was the worst of all three in the fact that, this
being the first musical offering they had made, it had very little
percussion in the background and it was mostly monotonous. Not to say that
the album did not have some very shiny gems; quite the contrary. Songs like
"Transylvanian Concubine", "Any Old Actress", and "Dig Ophelia" were quite
wonderful, but for the most part I wasn't nearly as impressed as I was with
"HOW WE QUIT THE FOREST", which is officially my favorite Rasputina album to
date.

I go sleep now, maybe, or else boil spinach.

How Now, Brown Cow?

Hi peeps -

Jewel said -

>> after i moved about 7 months ago, i started gaining weight. call it
stress, comfort eating, laziness -- whatever the cause, i'm not happy
with it. (snippety) ... so... i'm wondering if anyone has any advice
they would be willing to share

I have really been here in the last year or so myself. In college, I
weighed 115 to 125 depending upon how often I hit the gym. I'm 5'9" so
this made me about a size 2 to 6 depending upon the clothes. After
getting out of school, I went into my cushy desk job, with lots of
sitting around and expense account dinners. And the weight slowly crept
up on me (and up.. and up). I hopped on the scale last spring and was
horrified to find that I weighed 231 lbs (!) . I was looking for a new
job at the time and didn't come close to fitting into any of the suits I
had already, and frankly had a hard time finding anything decent looking
that fit at all properly. I was pretty unhappy with this, and didn't
really see how I was going to get back to anything approaching normal.

Last summer, I bought this book called 'Body for Life' by a guy named
Bill Phillips. I live in Boulder, CO, and this book is pretty popular
out here since Bill lives in Golden, CO. It just caught my eye one day,
so I picked it up, but didn't seriously read it for a while. Anyways,
last October, I finally read it and decided to put it into play, and
since then have lost 80+ pounds. It's a combination of reasonable (to
me at least) eating, and pretty intensive weight training and aerobic
workouts. My first couple of weeks with it were rough, since my eating
habits were pretty crappy, and I was way sedentary, but after that it
just became a habit.

So this is what worked for me, and I should hit my target weight of
125-130 lbs sometime this summer. I know that sounds thin for 5'9' but
I am a really small boned person. I don't think I'll see 115 again due
to the muscle mass I have put on while doing this. I calculated my BMI
(Body Mass Index, I think) the other day, and I fall within normal
limits now. I was categorized as morbidly obese when I started, so this
is pretty cool. The thing I didn't count on was how much BETTER I would
feel. I started it pretty much to look better and to fit into the
clothes I want to wear, so the feeling of better health was an
unexpected bonus.

cheers -

Rochelle

Subject: tori... rob....

Thanks to Beth for the quoting of Neil Gaiman.
I ***adore*** the Kindly Ones, I wish there was a boot of Tori doing the
sentimental journey. But, hey, if not, I can still dream...
I think whether one agrees with Neil or not, the fact that he notices SLG as
being more personal than "...Venus..." is very poignant - that's the
perception I had, and I had the impression many other people also - at least
those who appreciated SLG at all. I might be a blasphemipus little bugger
here, but to me SLG and its spirit as an album is, to me, the closest to
Boys for Pele. I know, I know, the diversity of musical means used on it
would point rather to Choirgirl as opposed to the almost an "unplugged",
down-to-the-basics character of BfP but... just the flow of it, the
album-oriented-beginning-to-end listening mode. And the fact that these are
two of the most challenging albums, for me personally. the most demanding to
the listener, they just don't spare you.

On a completely different subject.
I've been made to wonder how emotional predispositions of the moment make
you listen to music in an absolutely different way. Especially to the
lyrics. Being emotionally exposed and vunerable often opens you up to even
the simplest lyric, maybe because your sarcasm barrier and "disbelief" are
lifted, it all hits dead on into your heart.
I've had a series of extremely bad days now, and feeling disgustingly sorry
for myself had me absolutely fall in love with Rob Halford. ;) (yeah, i KNOW
he's unavailable ;)). the point is, lyrics that seemed really cheesy,
suddenly look like the inside of my head, and I've got my jaw on the floor
and tears in my eyes. Of course I feel very stupid, to add to that. But
songs like "Silent Screams" and "Slow down" from his album Resurrection have
me hyperventilating with gratitude over the fact somone actually wrote them.

"What i am is all that really matters now, the lies are gone. Tempting fate
and losing friends along the way I loved.
you'll never know, my life means everything, still, I scream because there's
nothing left to do until the end.
the world goes on, with all that I've become, still I scream inside, for all
the pain I've taken hasn't changed."

:)

Rain songs...

It Seems You Only Love Me When It Rains, by Harry Chapin
We Were Three, by Harry Chapin
November Rains, by Harry Chapin

Blame It on the Rain, by Milli Vanilli (or whoever actually did that song...)

Raining without You, by the Jeff Vincent Band
Come Rain or Come Shine, by Idina Menzel (or at least performed by
her... 'Tis from an off-broadway show)
Hands Like Rain, by TEA SF
Prayers for Rain, by Dreamtribe (if you like Delerium, check this
band out on mp3.com)

Subject: Amidala for Senate!

apologies to dani, bethany, and linda.

Hello!

I recently saw "Attack Of The Clones", and it exceeded expections!

*spoilers*

Coolest film I've seen in a long time! I really liked the scene when Mace
Windu went after Palpatine with his light saber and said "I'm getting Jedi
on your ass." And then there was the scene where the ground crew was
working on the prototype X-Wing fighter and when one technician was
lamenting the sorry state it was in, another technician led them singing
"Greased Blasterfire". And we were also introduced to the redneck bounty
hunter, Bubba Fett.

And Jar Jar Binks was the big hero at the end! Wow!

All in all, a great movie.

on a different note:

This is really scary. Driver's license info online for anyone to look up.

Reminds me of a "Voyager" episode- without giving too much away, basic
premise was that a planet was found that existed in a very accelerated
state of time, so that *years* passed by on the planet in minutes in the
rest of the universe. Among the challenges the Voyager crew encountered
were trying to "decode" signals from the planet, which indeed sounded like
chipmunks until processed and slowed down to a more listenable state.

Overall, it's clear that when faster than light space travel is actually
developed some sort of faster than light communications system would also
have to be developed (as exists in "Star Trek") or else people back on
Earth would in fact hear a weirdly shifted radio signal from a ship prior
to it going to warp (or whatever they actually call going past lightspeed
in the future), since normal radio signals travel at the speed of light.
Although I do wonder if a signal transmitted from a ship moving beyond the
speed of light would move backwards in time back to Earth, in effect being
recieved before it was actually sent.

sorry to dani for even brining that up. I honestly was just trying to make
a joke. No offense intended.

thank you, but I hope everyone knows I wasn't trying to cause all the
resulting trouble. Venting frustrations about lots of things and I got
carried away.

That's a given. We would expect nothing less than that from her.

from redstamen:

>Subject: copy protected cd's

something that's really been pissing me off lately. Yes I understand the
need to prevent piracy, but geez! Sometimes you make a copy just to play
while on the go so you can safely leave the originals at home and the copy
won't play some cd players, and sometimes the copies won't play in *any*
player. And more and more I've been having problems with newer CD's not
playing in some players (not copies, I mean the originals!). My home
stereo is a few years old but it's in good operating condition, and my
other cd's seem to play ok, but many cd's I've tried to play lately (both
mine and whatever friends bring by to listent to) either skip really bad or
the stereo displays the "no disc" message when the disc is in fact loaded.

It reminds me of when copy protected movies on video hit the market- worked
to stop copying by having a video signal that was just strong enough to run
through the vcr the tape was in and to the TV, but going through cables to
a second vcr degraded the signal enough to make the copy unwatchable.
Major problem though: that same "signal degredation" copy protection on
some tapes actually kicks in when you're just playing the tape straight to
your TV, no second vcr involved, so the original tape plays with a crappy
picture.

I have a few newer CD's that I can't play in my laptop's cd rom drive, nor
will they play in my stereo, but they'll play in my discman. Great for
being out and about, but it truly behaves like a collapsed star that I
can't play those cd's in my home stereo.

pardon the rant, but I hope I'm not the only one pissed off about this.

from claire:

>I agree with just about everything you said in that post. Still love you
>very much Simon but there's a distinction between stating your opinion about
>religion and just opening fire on it.

again, I do apologize about that. and thanks for not flaming back.

about the original "Time Machine" movie:

>Ooh I saw that movie when I was about 10, it scared me so much, the bit near
>the end where he goes forward instead of back and the body of that creature
>(what were their names?) all decomposed in front of him.

Those creatures were the Morlocks. Know what they evolved from? (makes
the story that much more interesting!)

> Oh, and the sirens. They were
>scary too...

the sound of air raid sirens is IMHO one of the most chilling things I've
ever heard- that horrible "wailing" sound. One night in 1988 we had a
storm roll through the area here in San Antonio and a lightning strike had
caused a power surge that triggered the city's emergency sirens- and for a
few minutes we thought something far worse than the storm was happening.

>My broadband came yesterday. I am beyond happy.

and family and friends will love it because your phone line won't be tied
up anymore when you're online ;)

from cyndi:

> In other words "make it realistic" huh? I like the way you think!

thank you :)

>Michael Jackson, or Madonna.. if there's a song that's really grabbed me
>and I'm playing it on repeat, I really tend to lose track of, #1, how
>many times I've played it, and #2, how much time has passed while I've
>played it.

my problem is that I can't get cool songs stuck in my head no matter how
many times I listen, while one listen to a crappy song and I'm hearing it
in my sleep!

said linda about her research work:

>Uhmm... well, at the moment, just mice. I'll leave it
>at that for now.

Seeing how they compare to touchpads and trackballs? ;)

*hugs* to deadra- I thought my 20/50 vision was a problem! glad you can
get contacts though.

I remember in the mid-80s when I first started wearing glasses (I was 16)
and I was dissapointed that they didn't make a prescription version of the
cool sunglasses sported by the Terminator in the film ;)

re: the Daniel Pearl video. Despicable as hell that CBS aired portions of
it despite pleas from the family and govt. officals not to. I heard that
there's now a website with it :(

sick sick sick! there are some things we just don't need to see.

later!

Subject: a Matt Chamberlain mention! :)

        from:
http://my.aol.com/news/news_story.psp?type=4&cat=0806&id=0206140730590236
, it says: (it was about David Bowie's new album..)

"Most of the music on the album - his first for ISO Records - was
recorded by the trio of Bowie, bass player Visconti and drummer Matt
Chamberlain."

I figured this was news because Matt works/worked (whichever. lol) with
Tori. :)

Subject: worried...

My sister is in the hospital. (yeah the pregnant one.. lol she's
my only sister rofl.. it's her, my bro, and me so you know. :D) she's
either got a kidney infection or a kidney stone, but either way, she's in
a lot of pain, and gonna be in the hospital at LEAST overnight. She's on
morphine right now, and I'm worried about her, and also her baby..
HOWEVER, my mom called her before leaving to go be with her, and she
sounded okay--in other words, not like she's about to die, so there's
SOME consolation.. but I'm still worried.. Any good thoughts or prayers
for her would definitely be appreciated cuz I'm sitting here trying to
just have a normal day, but I keep worrying about her.
on a lighter note.. my brother and his wife have gone to actually
do a closing (or whatever.. lol) on their new house that they bought..
YAY!!
*sighhhhhh..* I just needed to ramble to somebody. I already
talked to a friend of mine but I guess I needed to ramble to you guys
too. Wish my sister luck and let's hope she gets better..

Subject: I'm back

hey everyone,

I took a 2 week hiatis from my computer to be with my family who were
visiting. It was wonderful seeing them. I probably won't see them for another
2 years.

My hard drive blew up on Sunday, and I lost a lot of e-mail (not to mention a
lot of recipes and pictures), so I have no idea what's been going on the last
2 weeks :).
