  [ =======================>  In RDT History  <======================= ]

On July 8th in 1992, a few members members shared the news that
Tori's "Silent All These Years" video had gotten her nominated
as Best New Artist for the MTV Video Music Awards.

In 1993, someone welcomed a newcomer by saying:

Hiya, welcome to rdt! Don't worry, no-one flames around
here, we're the warm and fuzzy backbone of the net that
makes up in karmic terms for the angry young things on
        alt.music.alternative... :)

In 1994, members were sharing stories from the UTP tour and
making plans to meet up at shows. (And, yes, griping about
     Ticketmaster.)

In 1995, people were discussing whether the "Professional
Widow" single, which was all remixes, was worth the money.
Meanwhile, a member posted a hoax notice that Atlantic had
announced that "Twinkle" was going to be the next single!

In 1997, there was a heated debate over men's and women's
rights, and the results of the women's rights movement and
     feminism.

In 1998, some complaints about the songbook for "From the
     Choirgirl Hotel."

In 2001, some information about Tori's adopted homeland,
     Cornwall.

lookee what i found! looks like david torn is playing guitar on
_scarlet's walk_. for those who don't know, david torn is a fantastic
guitarist and composer. in addition to several solo records and writing and
playing music for soundtracks, he's also teamed up with the likes of mick
karn (japan), dale bozzio (missing persons), tony levin, bill bruford,
chris botti, vernon reid and elliot sharp for various projects.

here are the news bits from solid states, a david torn fansite which gets

to add that woj told me I could tell everyone he's a

weeks back that made him go looking for info in the

I was assuming it was being kept secret, so didn't want

if it's not one thing, it's another...fucking a.

i saw last week that missouri signed a state law requiring the pledge of
allegiance to be recited in all its public schools
(http://www.cnn.com/2002/ALLPOLITICS/07/03/missouri.pledge.ap/). under the
law, "public schools must ensure the pledge is recited weekly in a scheduled
class of every student, but students cannot be required to participate."
it's one thing to write a retarded judicial ruling that makes the pledge
unconstitutional, but it's perhaps worse to pass a state law requiring it.
yes, students themselves won't be required to participate, but this to me is
more violative of some basic civil right than the choosing to say or not say
the words "under god."

that such a big stink is being raised about this is kinda crazy. we have
school systems across the country falling apart. we have kids who live in
neighborhoods where they can't go out and play without dodging bullets. we
have kids getting abused in all sorts of horrendous ways. if we could
dedicate as much time to those issues as was spent in preparing the "pledge"
case (the plaintiff clocked 4000 hours!), the world would be a better place.

big word up to my boy kobayashi for once-again winning the coney island hot
dog eating contest. not only did he win for the second year in a row, but
the 5'4" 110 lb. man bested his own world record by downing 50 1/2 dogs in
12 minutes. he's not related to me, but it's good to see a kobayashi make
good for him or herself.

"to compare kobayashi to michael jordan would be a slight to kobayashi."

So I almost started a post tonight about Scarlet's Walk and then I thought
better of it but ...

Andrea and I were talking today and she said she didn't want to know too
much about this album before it comes out. Do other people feel that
way? Should posts about the album come with "spoilers"? I admit the
LA Times thing got me all curious. I can never really wait to hear a new
Tori album, anyway.

It's funny enough that Kim knows David Torn, because both Kim and Devin
know this guitar-maker, Steve Klein, and an associate of
his. Klein makes these sort of kidney-shaped custom guitars. Devin doesn't
know David Torn directly but Torn is closely associated with the Klein
guitar company and he worked on some of Torn's stuff (newsletter etc). I
said to Devin tonight, "now you're only three degrees of separation from
Tori! It's inescapable!" (he can't stand her music.) But he's got the flu
so he couldn't even really muster up a good pissed-off look.

I'm thinking Good Thoughts for Violet's mom and Megan's cat.

My life is continuing to do this wacky crossover thing where people from
various parts of my life are converging on each other, especially on
livejournal. I'm actually kind of getting used to it though, which is good
because it was freaking me out for a while.

Andrea dragged up the past and asked three questions. (No, not "What is
your name?" "What is your quest?" etc.) Here are my attempts at answers:

Dinner guest: Yeah, okay, Tori. My immense NEED to sit down and Discuss
with her has gotten less and less over the years, but you know, I bet we
could have a good talk nonetheless. I'd like to have Neil over, too, while
I'm at it. What would I make? Possibly my portobello mushrooms
-- which I cook with butter and garlic and fresh rosemary -- or teriyaki
salmon over rice with broccoli -- or maybe pasta with tomato sauce made
from scratch -- or possibly roast chicken basted in olive oil and balsamic
vinegar. I guess it would depend what they're in the mood for.

Best friend: I guess I would say Fenwick Rysen, if I knew what I
know about him but wasn't already his best friend. Except that the
reason I know so much about him is that we're already best
friends. I know, no one knows what I'm talking about. Well, almost no one.
(Sometimes I am glad that the RDTRN/chaosmatrix crossover has not happened
so far.)

Lover: Hmmm. I have not particularly been jonesing for
anyone lately. Well, okay. Viggo Mortensen, now that you've twisted my
arm. Can he please dress as Aragorn, while we're making requests? Thanks.

Beth

Nope, I was talking about making your own rubber stamps. There's a nifty
store in Provincetown (Massachusetts, Cape Cod) called Norma Glamp's
Rubber Stamps where they have tons of different rubber stamps. They also
had the felt-tip brush-pens that I used to use when I made comics (stick
figure comics, because I can't draw). So, I bought one and now I'm making
comics again.

I feel like the woman in "You Can't Take it With You" who became a
playwright because somebody delivered a typewriter to her house by
mistake.

Anyway, the store also had the raw materials to make rubber stamps, so I
stocked up on those as well. Haven't exactly figured out how or if I'll
use them, but I have them available if needed.

Megan, so sorry to hear about Coco.

Violet, hope everything goes okay. Let us know when you can.

I see our beloved Prime Minister (a.k.a. arse licker) is in Crete. Great!
I'm sure they really needed another cretin there.

Speaking of arses, mine didn't enjoy last weekend and no, I didn't drop the
soap. It was a severe reaction to chilli. I had nearly none late afternoon
and that night, I cramped up and my guts exploded. I spent just about all
of Saturday on the toilet. It even made me bleed. Is this what it's like to
have a period each month? I used to think I had a weak stomach, but I've
amended that to weak intestines.

In #1658, we had...

I wouldn't recommend them. Even if you do get all that hair off them, they
taste like chicken.

No prizes for guessing I'm a "Strange Little Girl". It goes well with my
prison bitch name of Queenie.

Elisha declared in #1660...
>Coops: You would be lost without your innuendos, wouldn't you?

Innuendo? How can it be innuendo when I'm blatantly obvious? I think Jim's
post about acting your age/being childish was quite timely. My view on life
is that if you are "grown up" all the time, you'll become miserable and you
forget how to find wonder in little things, or how to laugh when things go
wrong. Surely, there are times to be serious, but surely you can't be
serious all the time. And stop calling me Shirley. :-p But likewise, if you
spend your life acting like a kid you'll go nowhere fast. I like to balance
it out, so if I act more insane than usual, it's from over-compensating.

I'm also sure that Elisha would like a Dickens' Cider. Note how I've moved
the apostrophe, as I've never met anyone called Dicken.

For those who want to hear what nearly caused me to have an accident in my
own garage, the first link is what I heard. The second seems to be older
and all over the net.

Where would you want to "sprout" it, in the middle of your forehead? It's
not a matter of seeing, it's feeling that gives it the big whoop.

To have shown you that, I would have had to take you into the office area,
which would have meant I'd have to introduce you to Nerd Boy 2. I wouldn't
wish that on an enemy, let alone a friend.

Now stop right there! How can you even put "culture" and Steve Irwin in the

stress reminded me of Groove Armada's video for "whenever I'm down I call on
you my friend" (I'm not really sure of the name of the song) but it's a
beautiful video where a girl remembers a wonderful vacation at the beach and
night-club with 2 friends and stuff and ends up crying at the office and
it's really sad. but the thing is your post was really nice so I hope you
are able to de-lurk and Ely sounds like a great cat.

Violet- I wish the best outcome for your mother's surgery. I hope you don't
get too tired by all this. I will light a candle on your behalf.

I'm still feeling like a million dollars... the headache is not so bad
now... but I spent a terrible night, the cough went crazy I took all of my
medicines I was loosing my mind I drank water like a thirsty camel and peed
a dozen times I was so desperate and then of course I started worrying I had
taken too much medication (my stomach hurt as well) and I just said to
myself (please don't end up in the hospital) it was one of those nights
coughing and coughing turn to the clock and its 2 in the morning coughing
coughing turn to the clock and it's 3 in the morning etc... wanting to cry
and feeling I'm gonna die and being pissed off etc... so I did sleep from
about 6 am to 9 when the cleaning lady arrived and I decided I wouldn't go
to work... I will get less money but I don't care I'm still sick and I will
never get better roaming around the city in this fucking weather...

I'm just looking forward to eating with my grandma in the evening...
though I'm a bit worried I might give her my flu... as I already seem to
have given it to my best friend...

I should be held quarantine or something
well I don't have much more to say

cheers
juan

Tori Amos' America-Themed Scarlet's Walk Due Oct. 15

July 8, 2002, 11:30 am PT

Native American history, pornography, Oliver Stone, and Andrew Jackson
are just some of the subject matter on Tori Amos' forthcoming America-
themed new album, Scarlet's Walk, according to a spokesperson for the
singer.

As for the album's namesake, Scarlet "may be the land and may be a
person and may be a trail of blood" and is the personification of
everyone's search for answers, as the story of the album goes. The
album's musical and lyrical journey was inspired by the tragic events
of Sept. 11 -- the album was written entirely after the attacks on
America while Amos was on the road.

Scarlet's Walk -- Amos' ninth -- is set for an Oct. 15 release date
on Epic Records in the U.S. (Oct. 14 internationally) and was produced
by the often-eccentric singer-songwriter-pianist in Cornwall, England.
Drummer Matt Chamberlain and bassist Jon Evans once again appear on
the album, which is Amos' first release under her new deal with the
Sony label. (She had previously recorded for Atlantic Records, with
her last album being 2001's covers album Strange Little Girls.)

The first single, "A Sorta Fairytale," will hit radio Aug. 27, while
Amos will kick off a headline U.S. tour this fall with an international
trek to follow.

Based on a cross-country trip taken after September 11, Scarlet's Walk, the
first album by Tori Amos for her new label, Epic, is finished and scheduled
for an October 15 release date. Amos' sixth studio LP follows last year's
covers album, Strange Little Girls, and will be introduced via the first
single, "A Sorta Fairytale."

Subject: Get Out of My Garden Part VII

Will try to honor sweet Violet's request to keep this list active.

We have lost 3 kitties since 1998, Daphne, Tabby and Dexter. This is
what the card read from the Vet on Daphne's passing.

We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than
our own live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached. Unable
to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way. We cherish
memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the
necessary plan.

I wrote this epitaph for my queen bee Daphne who is buried in our back
yard under a bird bath with a concrete angel in the middle of it.

Rest in peace, Queen bee.
We know God has given
you back your jumper
and you are tightrope
walking in
Heaven.

That being said, I wonder why no comments have been made to Ari's
critique of Jim's virginity post.

Watching home run derby.

Garden update-----no red tomatoes yet but plenty of green ones. Eating
squash...eating hungarian wax peppers.

Get out of my garden....

Out

Subject: relief

My mom made it through her surgery and is doing pretty well. I was
so scared waiting for it to be over, I cried when the doctor told me
she was in recovery.

  Doctor: Hi, how are you?
  Me: Very nervous and worried?
Doctor: Why are you nervous and worried? Everything's fine.
  Me: <passing out from relief>

When my father had surgery in this same hospital in 1988, he had a
stroke afterwards and never recovered, staying in the hospital the two
remaining months of his life. I was terrified my mom was going to
have a stroke. It could still happen, since my dad's did after
sugery. But I doubt it. My dad had cancer plus a bad heart plus he
smoked heavily and was an alcoholic plus he had a lot of problems with
blood clots anyway. My mom doesn't have any of that.

But it's still just scary. And it took two hours longer than the
doctor had estimated to my mom, so you know ... you imagine the worst.

And I had only had about two hours of sleep -- bad sleep, very light
sleep, nervous sleep -- because I was worried. At one point I had a
dream where I went a desk to see how she was after surgery and there
was a chart there listing all the patient's names and their status
(which room they were in), and next to my mom's name in the status box
it said, "In Loving Memory" and I knew she hadn't made it.

She had to be there at 6am, but I just couldn't go that early. My
brother drove her up. I'd gotten up at 4:45 before they left, but
went up at 7:15 (getting there close to 8). Then it was a lot of
waiting. It was six hours from the time I got there until she was out
of recovery, and those six hours were some of the most miserable I've
ever lived through. Not just the waiting, but because I was also
feeling sick besides and had hardly had any sleep. I would sit there
and look at a magazine or try to read a book or put a CD in my laptop
and try to focus, but couldn't, and then I'd look at the clock and
only five minutes had passed. Time was creeping soooooo slow.

After the surgery, I had an hour and a half to kill before she was
expected to be out of recovery and in her room (turned out to be two
hours), so I went out to my car (hot, hot, hot!) and laid down for
half an hour. A couple of hours after she'd gotten settled in her
room, I drove 30 minutes back to her house because I had to sleep or I
was going to die, so I got a two hour nap and that was some of the
best sleep I've ever had in my life. It was only two hours, but it
felt like a full eight and I felt so much better after. But there's
still the fact that I was only running on four hours of sleep. I went
back to the hospital to visit with my brother, and then drove home.
I'm so tired, I'm wired. At this point, I've had four hours of sleep
in the past 48 hours and that's not. quite. enough.

Anyways, there will be lots to do over the next week or so, and lots
of visits to make, and lots of driving to do, and lots of little
sleep, I'm sure.

I have absolutely no idea if any of this makes sense or if I've left
chunks out, but it doesn't really matter ... she made it, and I'm so
happy, and now I have to SLEEP!

(I seem to have a dim recollection that my posts used to be more
interesting.)
