She's Come Undone. [ CruelGrl18@aol.com ]
[ =======================> In RDT History <======================= ]
On July 13th in 1994, someone posted the texts of articles
about Tori from the Wisconsin State Journal, the Cleveland
Plain Dealer, the Minnesota Star Tribune and the Akron Beacon
Journal. In the last article, the reviewer wrote:
When one man shouted he wanted to marry Amos, she told him
he wouldn't because she has too many problems. She asked
another admirer if he made good spaghetti, because that was
all she was interested in.
In 1996, a member posted a fantastic review of Tori's July 11
concert at the Paramount Theater in Oakland. He wrote:
Contrary to some recent speculation on this list, Tori is
HAPPY. She's ebullient, jiving with the crowd like I
remember from '92. The shows I saw in '94 were, I believe,
closely post-Eric-breakup. Seeing her tonight and
remembering her then, it strikes me that she was just
miserable. And now she isn't. Yay!
In 1997, one member asked: "Did Robert Plant somehow predict
the rise of Tori Amos?"
In 1998, there was a lot of discussion about people's favorite
and least-favorite songs on "Choirgirl," and, for some reason,
a lot of talk about Tori's cover of Jimi Hendrix's "If 6 Was 9."

Subject: the mp3 thing
Brian wrote:
> That article was always going to go in one direction after that quote.
Well, yeah, although that wasn't the beginning of the article. :)
Did you read the whole thing? I'm sort of curious.
While I agree with your arguments against what she said, I do think her
point -- that there has not been a very good study of napter&co's actual
effect on people's buying habits -- is true. I've seen some articles
suggesting that it's causing the slump in music buying, but none with real
evidence to back that up.
For example, one article I read studied music sales at a chain music store
in a college town. It assumed 1) that college students were downloading lots
of mp3s and 2) that they would normally go to the local chain music store to
buy their music.
I don't know about anyone else but even when I was in college, I didn't shop
at chain stores. And a lot of people these days buy their music from online
sellers, especially if they're already online listening to an mp3. My habit
tends to be: listen to mp3s, put album on amazon wish list, and then either
buy it on amazon or from my local, independent record store the next time I
happen to be there. (Or, if I don't like something, I won't buy it.)
So I think it would be a lot more effective to actually ask lots and lots of
folks who DO regularly download mp3s whether it has led to an increase in
their buying of music. A lot of the people I've talked to have said that it
has, but that's hardly a a good sample. I do think that record companies are
so hell-bent on believing that mp3s are the reason sales are slumping that
they're not willing to look at whether that's really true.
Ian's article goes into a lot of other issues, anyway, since she also talks
about how record companies totally shaft artists and the generally monstrous
behavior of the major labels. I think it's good to read the whole thing and
then think about the complete picture (which is not complete, as it's
written from one perspective, but as she says in the beginning, she did
hundreds of interviews with people to prepare that particular piece).
For those out there who are opposed to mp3 trading, how do you feel about
record stores which sell used CDs? Artists do not make money off the sales
of used CDs except indirectly -- if you buy a used CD and you like it,
you're more likely to buy other albums by the same artist, and conceivably
some of those would be full-price sales. Sales of used CDs do not help
artists get into the charts or generally reflect in the artist's total sales
figures.
But on the other hand, many people want to protest the behavior of the music
industry, especially the escalating and ridiculous prices of CDs, and one
way to do that is to buy used (or buy online, although I think the ones you
shaft when you buy online is the seller, not the publisher). Unfortunately
there are not a lot of ways to use your dollars to protest the major labels
without also hurting the artists -- except insomuch as artists do not make
most of their money off record sales, anyway.
Anyhow, the article does into some depth on all this (except the topic of
used CDs), which is why I mentioned it.
> Just about all on-line CD retailers have samples of every song off an
> album. That is only advertising to get you to buy it. If you need more
> than that to decide if you like an album or not, you're probably too
> fussy.
I'm not so sure about that. I listened to System of a Down's samples on
amazon.com and they were so crappy-sounding that I thought I wouldn't like
the CD, and therefore didn't buy it. However, my brother played it for me
recently and I *really* liked it. Had I been able to hear the whole songs
with better-quality audio, I might have gotten the album. I'm still planning
to, but I've had that experience a number of times with amazon. It just
doesn't really give you a clear picture of what an artist sounds like. For
me, sometimes one small part of a song will make the WHOLE SONG more
enjoyable for me, where if I just hear a 20-second snip of another part, out
of context, I might not enjoy it so much.

Hey everyone!!!
(Some of you may be scratching your heads for a minute, because I think I am
sending this to some people that I forgot to send this to last time... Bear
with me.)
I have some really good news!! 3 Percent Hero, my little brothers' band,
has made it to Round 3 of the American Idol contest on 94.9 ZHT in Salt
Lake!!!!!
Which means you can all go vote for them again to send them to Round 4!
For those who didn't get the original e-mail, the radio station is doing a
contest to find the best Salt Lake City band, and my brothers' band, 3
Percent Hero, is movin' on up! :-)
I want to re-emphasize that I would never ask you guys to vote for them just
because they're related to me ó I don't want them to win by "cheating." You
can listen to a clip of their song, "I Miss You," at the Web site before you
vote, and you can decide whether you like it enough to vote for them. (I
guarantee you will. :-))
The site is at www.949zht.com/americanidol You have to sign up for a Z-Spot
membership to vote, but it's not a big ordeal.
So, to clarify in case I was unclear: Even if you voted for 3 Percent Hero
last week, you can vote for them again now that they have moved on to Round
3. (The votes are tallied each Friday and the new round begins Friday
evening. You can vote once a week ó once for each round.)
Also, the band is listed as 3 Percent on the ballot, so don't bother
searching for "Hero." You won't find it. :-)
Thanks thanks thanks to all who voted, and to all who will vote this week!!!
Doug

Oh my God! If you have not read that book yet, you must do so, NOW.
The books is too complicated to go into too many details.
It's about a girl and the unraveling of her life and her journey into putting
it back together.
some important events in the book:
At around age 9 or 10 her mother gives birth to a stillborn baby, which
causes her mother to have a nervious breakdown and is instituitionalized.
Her mother divorces her father and the two of them move in to live with her
grandmother.
at about age 13 or 14, she is raped by the man who is renting a room upstairs.
about 16 or 17 (not sure), Her mother is killed by a car as she works at the
Jersey turnpike.
She spends the next year or so torturing herself with food and becomes very
fat
she goes to college for a semester but has a breakdown and is admitted to a
mental hospital.
She spends several months (maybe a few years, I can't remember) in therapy.
She becomes somewhat stable and starts to lose weight.
The hospital puts her in a halfway house, where she finds work at a
photolab-developing pictures.
She comes across a photo of a guy and she becomes obsessed with him. She
finds out where he lives and moves there. There start a relationship, but he
uses her sexually and takes advantage of her.
I cannot remember when or why their relationship ends, but it's yucky.
I think she moves again, but I cannot remember where. She begins to dream of
a man that reminds her of a Teddy Bear.
Eventually, she begins to heal her soul and put her life back together. She
eventually meets her Teddy Bear.
It's been a while since I've read the book. It is definitely a must read.
Unfortunately, it's the only book of Wally Lamb's that I've ever liked.

I'm could be mistaken, but I believe her career "really took off" more in
the UK than here at first. I read the "Tori Time-line" at a website (I
can't remember the name or address right now, but you can find it at the

her to England after she released Little Earthquakes because they thought
she would be more accepted there doing "the girl and piano" thing. Although
you're right, she was assaulted in LA so of course I could be wrong.
I've read "She's Come Undone" by Wally Lamb about 4 times or something
crazy like that because the book is utterly delicious and I really

Dolores is a class-A emotional basket case, and why shouldn't she be? She's
