On July 31st in 1993, members were discussing more Tori food
     quotes.

In 1994, Tori appeared on Entertainment Tonight (on the 30th)
talking about RAINN, and members were writing about bootlegging,
Tori's makeup, concert reviews, part 1 of the PGY single, and
one member reorted seeing a YKTR-era portrait in a comic titled
"Flies On The Ceiling volume nine of the complete Love &
     Rockets".

In 1995, Anastasia Romanov, and more comments on the reposted
digests (with some even pondering whether Hobbes had returned
     with a vengence).

In 1996, drugs (in Holland), bunnies, BFP could be a new
mending process for Tori, typing speeds, concert reviews, and
     Jewel.

In 1997, stories of weird Tori paraphernalia, Neil is to write
an episode of Babylon 5, there are too many Michaels on the
     list, and the movie UHF.

     In 1998, Christianity.

In 1999, statutory rape, losing a grandparent, born again
virgins, and the "Blair Witch Project" movie.

In 2001, we are asked what track is Tori NOT doing on SLG that
we think would fit in, and members discuss why Tori tours.

Hello everyone.

I haven't had much of a chance in recent months to post, but I am
once again downloading the digests and reading them at work, so I
should be able to keep up without much effort once again.

We'll see.

Violet asked if some of us had heard the promo songs and what we
thought of them. I have downloaded them all, and they sit on my
harddrive right now. I listened to each of them all the way through
to get a feel for them, but other than the single A Sorta Fairytale,
I haven't listened to them extensively. And I doubt I will, really.
It isn't that they are not what I expect from Tori. I just felt...
so compelled to *HAVE* them once they were out there. I do like
each and every one (although one has a very strong pull to me and
another has a very light pull) but I do enjoy taking the entire work
as a whole, especially when it comes to Tori, and devour the entire
album. I guess it's just that October 29th seems *so* far away ;)

Burning cds:

I dislike making full copies of cds for anyone for any reason, and
in fact, many times when I'm asked to make a copy of one of my cds,
I'll instead buy the person the full cd and write it off as birthday
or other type present, or just make them a mix cd with the songs
they prefer. It's not entirely guilt-free, but I have noticed that
most of my friends tend to go out and buy the entire discs anyway.
It just infuriorated me that the Tower Records here closed, and
placed a big sign on their door, alluding to Napster and other such
mp3 exchanges as the reason they went out of business there. If you
go around the corner from the old Tower, to the little new and used
cd shop my friend Rick owns, you'll see a business that has been there
for as long as Tower was in town, and they are thriving. What's the
difference? Not the used cd option, as used cds were available at
our Tower as well. No, just look at the average price on any cd.
Little Earthquakes was selling at Tower for $17.99. Rick's cd store?
brand new, $14.99. Now, I dont know about you, but I certainly didn't
buy Tower's argument there. I think it's pretty evident why they
didn't stay in business. This certainly doesn't mean all of the stores
do their business this way, it just makes me wonder.

And now for something completely different.

e's top 5 (High Fidelity Style, of course!) movies. Here's my
list:

1) Simple Men
2) Wings of Desire
3) Dead Poet's Society
4) Being John Malkovich
5) Until the End of the World.

Why is it always necessary for places of employment to have the air
conditioning jacked so far up that I'm freezing while outside it is
hovering around 95 degrees? Isn't there a happy medium *somewhere*?

Is using a radio older than you as bad? I've got a radio that covers a
no-longer used frequency band *below* AM, AM, shorwave...but it's old
enough not to have FM on it! It's really cool hearing distant broadcasts
via the net in crystal clear audio, but I have to admit, there's still a
certain mystique in actually tuning an old mechanical dial tuner and
hearing a distant broadcast with real radio background noise.

responding to juan's top 5 movies, here's a list of 5 movies I think are
truly excellent:

1.Demolition Man
2.Speed
3.While You Were Sleeping
4.The Net
5.Speed II

Subject: an angels face is tricky to wear constantly

Taking a cue from Rebecca, I'll delurk as well. I've subbed and lurked
and unsubbed and subbed again so many times in past few years I've lost
count. But I always come back.

I have heard all of the new Tori songs (and have them available if
anyone is interested). I'll try not to spoil anyone, I'll just say I
love each song and I'm glad to hear a more mature Tori using familiar
elements of past albums.

I have strong feelings on the mp3 issue, but they mostly echo things
that Bethany has already posted. The internet has introduced me to so
many of my favourite artists. Artists I would not even have heard of had
I not found their songs online. And I've grown to appreciate other
artists, like Tori, more because of hearing songs that are not on their
albums. I'll admit I'm selfish, I like having free music. But with a
few exceptions, I never buy an album without hearing at least one song
from it. And not many of the artists I listen to are played on local
radio. So in my case, and many others, mp3s encourage me to purchase cds
and go to concerts. So obviously I'm pro-mp3.

I had a bizarre dream last night that Neil Gaiman and Cameron Crowe were
making a movie of my life starring Angelina Jolie, using Tori's lyrics
as dialogue. Yes, I am insane.

I'm nearly finished reading Dream Brother by David Browne. I am now in
love with Jeff Buckley. I was born too late.

The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde would make a kick ass movie, as it is a
very cool book. I wish I could walk into the worlds of novels.

Backing up on topics, I also liked Minority Report. The Bourne Identity
was also good. Both were frightening glimpses into the possible future.
But I don't think The Flying Car is worth what Dante would go through.
But I digress.

I'm in the embarrassing state of West Virginia, in case anyone is
curious. Oh for a Tori concert anywhere near me. Sigh.

Rebecca:
>Dancer in the Dark: Although I feel sick to my stomach through most of the
movie ("oh god, selma, don't do that!"). I just adore Bjork for all her
quirks and eccentricities.

Dancer in the Dark is one of those excellent, painful to watch films.
Though the music and Bjork's adorable face make it easier to view than
Boys Don't Cry or Requiem for a Dream. The 'I've Seen it All' scene is
my favourite of the movie. Beautiful song.

Speaking of musicals, for something completely different try Hedwig and
the Angry Inch. Hilarious, catchy, and there's rarely anything yummier
than androgyny.

Harold and Maude is on my to-see list after so many recommendations. I
did love The Professional (Leon).

My current movie obsessions are The Anniversary Party and Amelie. Though
it changes constantly.

Some artist you may not have heard of but should: Virginia Dare, Nini
Camps, Erin O'Hara, Dayna Kurtz, Mary Timony (ex-front for Helium), and
Shannon Wright.

I've got tickets to Beth Orton's concert in Louisville next week. I hope
the new album is good and not an attempt at going mainstream. Is there
any album Ryan Adams won't sing on?

matt:
>suzanne vega, "solitude standing"

A classic indeed. Has anyone heard Vega's new album (Songs in...)? A
wishlist album so far.

>natalie merchant, "live in concert"

She is the most amazing performer in concert and recordings definitely do
not do that voice justice. Go now go!

>the new springsteen, hooray!

Hooray! The new single is good. Please share your thoughts on the rest of
the album. I've been hesitant to buy Springsteen since the Ghost of Tom
whatever. But I do love the Boss.

e.:
>everything is either mainstream or doesn't exist at all.

This is so true, and so frightening. The globalization of mainstream
music, movies, and lifestyle is so suffocating and hopeless. It's always
been bad in America, but life here has reached a new level of
superficiality and 'norm'. It used to be that anything alternative
or 'weird' was just thought of as strange and was hard to find. Now it's
all but eliminated. And other countries, which once had more diversity in
entertainment and culture, are conforming to this fake, surfacy
popularity. I blame pop music for the downfall of society. Really. I see
the music industry reaching a point where no unknown artists will be
signed. Everyone will have to have connections or be willing to be molded
into a product that can be sold. It's already there to a certain extent.

>I think the insight an artist can give the public about his art can be
insightful, but it can be very deceptive as well, paradoxically.<

I agree. And I think this definitely applies to music. For every song that
has been enhanced for me by the artist's comments, there is one that was
ruined by knowing the motivation behind it. But then the paradox. Many
songs don't come alive for me until I know something of their meaning.
There's a balance that is needed. Knowing the meaning of a song, or the
events that caused the songwriter to write it, help me to connect to it
and understand it, but I also need to relate it to myself sometimes and
having every aspect of it exposed makes that difficult.
Still, I think I would rather know something of a song or any piece of art
than know nothing. I view art as more of a part of an artist rather than a
separate entity of it. I think when it is received by someone else
(whether through the eye or the ear), it can be transformed into something
else, absorbed and made a part of each individual. But in the same way
that I feel objects and art affect us, I also feel they retain energy from
all that come in contact with it. Especially the artist. Not so literally
with music, but...nevermind. I make little sense to myself, let alone
others! I get more annoyed at reviewers and critics who pick art apart
until it is reduced to slices than at artists who explain themselves.

Oh no I said too much. I must lurk for another year now.

Hi Rebecca
WILLKOMMEN
(I like your name... I know I'm trite but it reminds me of Daphne de Maurier
and Hitchcock and all fuzzy misty beautiful images of curvy stairs and
crawling plants and vaporous dresses and ok enough I like it)
how many cats have you got? what are their names?
hope you enjoy it here.

e!!!!

you didn't tell me where you got the slg single?
I've been looking for it
no success

I suspect if we reply here to simon's birthday he'll read the congrats a
month later...
but anyway
HAPPY DAY WHICH IS ABOUT A MONTH AFTER YOUR BIRTHDAY!!!
I've grown to enjoy and expect your sense of humour
definitly a remarkable ingredient of this list to me
take care.

Matt got these for
>a combined price of less than £27 this weekend:
>
>suzanne vega, "solitude standing"
>grandaddy, "under the western freeway"
>cocteau twins, "tiny dynamine / echoes in a shallow bay"
>natalie merchant, "live in concert"

and I'm boiling inside with envy grrbhrrlstwerrrgrrlwdamn!

I'm so poor these days I should wear an orange sweatshirt with the hood way
up all over my face only letting my eyes be seen and mutter inintelligible
insults at everyone and get killed... oh my god!
you bastards.

the music industry gives me goosebumps... all execs I've met have this
strange I sold my soul sort of vibe... and that combined to the "you're only
important if you can mean money to me" vibe is yucky and scary.

very interesting talk about writing about art...
I draw too... very sporadically I paint or create or blah... anyway... words
are my addiction (well, one of my addictions anyway, there's mango and
lobster and chocolate etc.)... but I don't use them like I do when I talk or
here in a discursive logical manner... lately I try to use them more in that
simbolic way... or aesthetic phonetic way sometimes... I also love puns...
and words with several meanings...
when I have "finished" some visual art and have felt a desire to complete it
with words i often go to some other "complete" verbal art form and quote
some poetry or lyrics... there is very often a connection or an inspiration
which I feel I can repay if I quote or go back to it and directly relate it
to what I did... just to leave it like that in case someone will ever be
interested or in case it might mean something someday.

I liked what you said emmanuel, I liked it a lot... I'm a fan! heh.

emotion in visual arts is the most precious and unexplicable thing, I don't
understand nor know much about it but that's what has made Van Gogh so
important and loved and eternal (to talk about the popest of pop examples I
could think of... and I don't mean pop as a current in a Warhol
Liechtenstein way of course, I mean that everybody knows it-him)

artists are just like the rest of us exept when they're possesed by their
art (the moment of creation or performance) then they're bigger than
themselves, they are mediums... and they are magic channeling magic until it
is out it's done and the magic, the ether, has found a material form or a
physical form or an audible form to exist in this world and the artist
remains a person just like the rest of us.

I guess sometimes you might be depressed or disappointed in that "rest of
your life" because you want to be in that unearthly heavenly mad state all
the time... and most can't...

interesting
all speculation

so today I heard Silent all these years on the radio in the car on my way to
the office (believe it or not... I can hardly) I cried a bit haha... and
then I said to myself "what piece of shitty mcdonalds music will they give
me after this?" and it was just perfect for real, they played the Pink
Panther theme in all full jazz band glory and then Fiona Apple
shadowboxer... the usual radio gods must have been asleep and some strange
spirit took charge of it for a split second.

um I should go but first
e:
where can I get those b-sides... please be merciful and magnanimous!
and: how's that petition tori tour world tour hopefully include mexico thing
going??? is it still going??? or will we plan a massive migration sans
obstacles this time?

ok

heyyyy everybody! I ACTUALLY WOKE UP BEFORE 2 TODAY!!! *faints
from the shock* XD hahah.. anyway..

Welcome to the list, Rebecca! well.. I mean.. you've been here
for a while, but since it's your first post, you still get to hear me say
"welcome to the list". :)

e said to Simon: "To Simon, let the years to come be filled with your
interminable and funny replies!"
I SECOND THAT! Simon, you rock! :)

Matt said: "....it also seems like a lot of people are getting their cds
damaged, and this is something i still don't really understand - maybe
i'm just obsessively careful about the way i treat my cds...."
it might be.. or maybe you know something that we don't by golly!
GIVE US SOME TIPS!!

Matt then said of stuff like Napster, etc: "....using this software to
promote the interests of self-publishing artists would be a very positive
application."
Yes it would.. muchly so.. any exposure is good exposure.

Matt then explained classical music copyrights to me: "as for copyright
in classical music, i believe that copyright expires a certain time after
the death of the author, and the work enters into the public domain."
oooooh.. okay.. so it's not as terrible of me to download (for
example) Mozart's Turkish March as it might be for me to download Yes,
Anastasia then? okay..

Then Matt said: "cyndi wondered why i was sucked dry of any uplifiting
thoughts post-portishead. well, all i can say is, if you haven't heard
the album, then try to do so - it's a bloody harrowing listening
experience. if you have heard it and find it anything other than

listen to it in a different way next time."
which album is this? I've heard a few Portishead songs, and
they're pretty damn good but I don't have any albums yet.

ADE! sounds like your writing workshop was a blast! shoulda come to me
for tips for free tho. ;) no, just kidding. I'm just a writer, not a
TEACHER. only advice that I find to be good advice that I've given out
before is "keep a journal to write out all your thoughts in. It's a good
way to vent if you can't sleep or if you're so mad/sad/excited/whatever
that you can't think straight." lol.. *shrug*

and on that note, everybody.. I realize that my last digest only had my
first paragraph added to it.. whaaaaaaat the heckaroonies?? I had more to
it than that but eh oh well.. at least I posted.. I had a crappy day,
yuck. it sucked. today's looking to be a bit more promising tho. :D ciao!

Welcome Rebecca, hopefully you'll write more often, and that a job will
appear soon enough.

Damn you Matt and your great musical taste. I've been longing for the Belly
collection for months now.

Well, Britney came to Mexico, and I must say it was a complete fiasco (
wouldnt expect anything else from Britney ). The first show lasted an hour
and 10 minutes, and was so disappointing people left at half the concert.
The second date was cancelled 4 songs into the show because it started to
rain... even though I would have never gone, I feel so angry for the little
kids who went to see one of their idols and got pure crap. What's this
story's moral? Become a Tori fan, not a Britney fan.

While I think that people have to face the consequences of their actions, I
agree with you about punishment vs. education- education can prevent crime,
while simply seeking revenge against a criminal does nothing to solve some
of the problems that might have led to that person committing the crime.
Educated people about the dangers of a particular behavior goes much
further IMHO than simply trotting out the threat of punishment if one
doesn't stop whatever it is that's wrong.

She has a personal stake in promoting better child seats for cars and using
seatbelts, but I agree that it would go much further for her to lobby the
companies that make child seats to design better seats *and* to have some
sort of program in place to help poor parents obtain the newer, safer seats
for their children.

Interesting UFO story (fighters chasing something over Washington over the
weekend). It's a relief to know that it wasn't a threat, but just *what*
was it then?

yeah- ask brian about cable modems! ;)

as for cars, the Sebring is a great one from Chrysler, but the one I'll
always want is the Viper ;)

Hope you didn't have any problems viewing the animation clips. I've have
my laptop act up when I've checked out those clips, but I think that's just
a limitation issue with my computer rather than a problem with the site.

Still feels a little strange seeing myself depicted as an animated character!

This is something I've wondered about myself. I know the music industry
has a lot invested in the conventional ways of doing things, but it would
have been an excellent long-term opportunity for them to get on board with
a new medium. Plus, as I think someone has mentioned already, smaller
record companies or individual artists who don't have the resources of the
large companies would have an excellent opportunity to get their material
marketed and distributed in ways that conventional CD production wouldn't
have allowed them to do.

crap. I should have known that! I mean I read about those things all the
time, plus I've seen the movie "Starman" ;)

Don't you hate it when you're making obscure smartass comments and someone
manages to point out a flaw? ;)

later!

In a classic case of misheard song lyrics, some people have identified that
song as "Clown Control To Mao Tse-tung"

incidentally: what's the correct spelling? I've seen it written both way-
Tse-tung as well as Zedong.

there's a local CD shop here in San Antonio called CD Exchange that sells
used CD's, but they sell so many bootleg and potentially stolen CD's that
the thieves unloaded there for quick cash that I figured they should be
done with it and call the store CD Fence.

So many bootlegs (or "imports" as they call them) that you think Captain
Hook runs the place! ;)

sounds like ade had a great time on her trip :)

did you get your site fixed?

based on e's description of MTV LatinAmerica, it sounds like it's pure
crap, just like US MTV.

We in the US need to find better things to export to the rest of the world.

Sounds like what my friends and I are thinking about in regards to the
video/animation we want to work on. At the very least, get a "company
name" registered and start putting money aside to get better hardware
later. The big thing is attitude- long term committment to something one
is truly passionate about as opposed to trying to get rich quick.

Sounds like Kerri's move went ok :)

Not that I mind these guys finally doing something worthwhile with our
tax dollars, but this is like trying to cure AIDS when we can't stop the
common cold.

Next they will probably move to stop music piracy or rudeness in traffic.
