[ =======================> In RDT History <======================= ]
On August 9th in 1993, members were still discussing the Toys
movie and soundtrack, which lead into discussing Clannad,
namely album recommendations. Members were also discussing
their like/dislike for Kate Bush.
In 1994, a member reports that Michael Stipe was at one of
Tori's shows and he and Tori ended up at an Italian resturant
entertaining the other diners with "Star Spangled Banner",
voting has begun on whether rmt-a will become a newsgroup and
details about how rmt-a and the email list will and won't
interact.
In 1995, only one digest (with a single post), but hey! no
bounced digests!
In 1996, a member posts some details about how Tori has the
harpsichord prepared for concerts, reviews,
gymnastasts/athletes and health issues, and a bit of
mythological information about Pele and her sister.
In 1997, this day in RDT history, RDT admin Chris comes up
missing for weeks...panic grips the list. :)
In 1999, more comments on Bliss, a member posts lots of
information about Datura (the plant/drug), members discuss a
previous comment that 'it takes pain to get Tori', and things
are relatively calm despite pot-shots being taken.
In 2001, House Of Leaves.
[ =======================> In RDT History <======================= ]
On August 10th in 1992, more details on the SATY/MAAG reissue
(Part 1 apparently due out today), a few more comments on the
YKTR/TTTS connection, tour dates, and the final (5th) part of
the German Keyboards article:
TORI: Yes, when I was twelve, with three different teachers
from whom I learned different things. But I only looked for
what I needed, I didn't want to be an opera singer. Because
whether you're dealing with piano playing or singing or
writing songs, technique alone isn't enough, you have to
develop your own style and discover your own personality.
It's easy to sing perfectly and to play perfectly and to
write perfect songs. The real challenge is expressing your
personality. I'm afraid teachers aren't aware of that
themselves.
In 1994, a member posts Tori's comments from the UTP sheet
music book, lots of articles are posted, and the details on how
to vote on rmt-a.
In 1995, an announcement is sent out to let everybody know the
list is being temporarily shut down to sort out the 'bouncing
digest' problem.
In 1997, still no list or Chris.
In 1998, a number of members post reviews on a number of Tori
concerts, members posted more views on the 15 year old fan
thread, and Lettermans show.
In 1999, more comments on the latest flame war.
In 2000, more comments on the latest flame war, and the
Neighborhood Chair. [I miss that chair! A certain list member
travelled all the way from New York just to sit in this chair.
Well, okay, not *just* for that, but he was pretty darned
excited to sit in THE CHAIR and took several photos, which are
still on his website along with many wonderful stories:
http://wildkoba.com/destination/roadtrip2k/entries/0815.html
The chair is long gone, as someone absconded with it a week
after the pics were taken, but the memories remain.]

The archives aren't going anywhere, you could always wait till you're back
on line to check it out. I'd also suggest going a few digests prior to when
the topic was first mentioned in the retros, just to make sure you catch the
start of it (the start of a thread can be an inocuous little thing).
And just to cover all the bases, there's a link to the archvies at the end
of every digest.

A fast beat techno song with 'wellchosen' speedracer quotes, on one of
those napster wannabe programs like WinMx, and it's by Lords of Acid, a
band that lives on perversion.
i used to have that on disc. i thought it was by keoki? maybe it was just

Simon on PJ O'Rourke: "he wrote heretical things about The One."
*raises eyebrow* okay.. I gotcha.
I deleted the name before I took a good look at it but... "I was wondering
what ever became of those two girls and their father and
why they closed the web site to Tori who they obviously loved so much.
Was it the change in Tori's music? A divorce of their father and mother?
New directions of the girls after they got older? Or are they
still around as Toriphiles and I have been oblivious?"
I have no idea, but I'm sure they still at the very least, ENJOY Tori.
*shrug*
ahh, Simon posted the same url I did!: "check this out (thanks Cyndi for
showing this to me :) )"
you're welcome! :)

Victoria said: "This week's vivid dream was about Dave Navarro throwing a
party for me. I think this is a sign that my intelligence is waning. But
he's hot anyway."
hell yeah he is! and I disagree on the waning intelligence bit.. I
totally disagree. :D
Victoria then said: "Should I take the news of a serial killer loose and an
outbreak of West Nile disease in Louisiana as an omen that I should cancel
my New Orleans vacation next month? Nah, I think I'll embrace the madness."
oh yay.. be caaaareful! I mean.. I don't exactly think you'd enjoy
GETTING that disease..
and okay.. as long as I can do a top five of non-Tori and then a top five
of Tori.. I'll do my list too!
Top five non-Tori albums (in no particular top-to-bottom ranking order):
1. Michael Jackson "HIStory/Blood On The Dance Floor" (two different
albums, might as well be the same thing cuz BOTDF is a HIStory remix album
with new songs, and HIStory is a "greatest hits" album with new songs and I
never listen to the remixes or "greatest hits"..)
2. the Beatles "Abbey Road" (used to listen to that ALL THE TIME back in
middle school.. and especially during the songs all looped together as one,
I'd daydream--er.. at night anyway--of being a big rock star singing those
songs. :))
3. Madonna "Music" (just a pretty damn good album to listen to whenever I
feel like it. :))
4. New Kids On The Block "Greatest Hits" (nostalgia.. period.)
5. Kid Rock "The History of Rock" (okay I love the Devil Without A Cause
album, but I like this one better.)
Top five Tori albums:
1. From The Choirgirl Hotel *and* Little Earthquakes (why do they both
share #1? because they're both, in my opinion, THAT GOOD. I can't pick one
or the other.)
2. To Venus and Back (YOU try listening to Bliss and Juarez without
feeling drained somehow!)
3. Boys For Pele (if I'd filled this out a few months ago, I'd have
added "#6" and tagged it on there, but.. let's just say it's still growing
on me.. furiously. :))
4. Under The Pink (would have been #3 a few months ago. :))
5. Strange Little Girl (when I listen to it, I *LOVE* it.. and I do get
the songs in my head and want to listen to it at times, etc.. but not as
much as say.. LE or FTCH.. it's not crappy though.. I love it.)
Victoria explained: "I had to stop putting Tori in my top album lists cos
I'd have to list at least two or three of her albums, depending on my mood
at the time."
that's why I did a non-Tori and a all-tori list. :D
Victoria then said: "Because, with the exception of that Swedish bitch from
Metallica, it's not the artists that are saying no and going to court over
mp3s."
rofl.. Lars doesn't comprehend "millions and millions of dollars
already in the bank", does he? I used to like Metallica, but during the
Napster scandal, well.. it wasn't Napster that killed 'em for me, (even tho
I disliked Lars for it) it was.. they didn't sound that great anymore to
me..
Victoria replied to my '97 B&C ramble: "I thought in B&C she carried out
the concept she was going for. Giving a female voice to what was originally
a male song. A bastardly male song at that. Tori's whisper made the song
even more creepy and realistic, imo. And hearing her describe her
motivation for covering that song did help put it into perspective for me
and whatever my feelings on that album, I respect her for reaching out to a
character that was hidden by the shock value of the original song."
so do I. the original song scared me too much to go "dancing with
blood on my sneakers".. I never danced to it or snapped my fingers to it.
it scared me TOO much.. but Tori's version.. BECAUSE she was giving the
dead woman a voice.. her version--while creepier-sounding--really made me
feel better.. as if it were, in SOME weird way, remade into a little bit of
a lullaby to soothe my little traumatized self.
Victoria replying to what I said about my grandmother and my "depressing
music": "My mother did the same thing! And god forbid I listen to Radiohead
in front of her. Though this is a woman who started screaming about demons
when she caught me watching Buffy once. I don't miss living at home much."
I don't miss being around my grandmother much anymore.. she's falling
apart and getting weirder every year. I love her, but I refuse to visit her
without my mother anymore.
Deadra on BFP: "I have to say that BFP is my favorite album. I can listen
to that album for days! Mother is my favorite song. But BFP has so many
good songs on it. The emotional rollercoaster it takes you on is addictive."
EXACTLY why I'm "learning" to love it! I mean I loved it anyway, cuz
Tori's good like that, etc.. but.. it's really getting its hooks under my
skin.. I love it. :)
Bethany talked about vibrators... hmmmmm.. gee, why not just pull a Lorena
Bobbit, find some well-hung bastard (and I mean.. asshole bastard) and
relieve him of his "duties"? :D
thank you everybody for explaining a bit of Belly to me! :)
Victoria replied to my "to some degree, I think EVERYONE has 'attention
seeking syndrome'" ramble: "I think that part of the reason that some of
become so obsessed with certain celebrities or singers is that we see
someone that we can relate to, either through their personality or
background or lyrics and they are famous, they are getting attention. It
may not be envy, but it's a vicarious sensation to absorb ourselves in
everything about them."
very interesting way to look at it.. hell, I wanna be a rock star not
for the groupies (guys can be groupies too can't they??) or drugs or
anything.. but because I want to walk onstage somewhere and hear people
scream and yell my name or my band's name.. and chant it and sing along to
our songs.. and love us.. *sigh...* lol I just like feeling important, is
all.. and I'd rather BE the rock star than marry the rock star, so don't
expect me to run off and marry some idiot just cuz he was once in a band. :)
okay, that's all from me for this post. I'm behind by a post YET AGAIN so..
*runs off and hides* later!

I have a confession to make.
Last week I went as far as admitting to my girlfriend that I hadn't liked
Strange Little Girls as much as I'd enjoyed any of the past Tori albums. She
was so glad I was able to admit something like that.
But then, today, I decided I would finally pay some attention to the album
from start to finish, and really see what I thought.
Needless to say, my fellow Toriphiles, I was blown away.
How could I have missed such genius? How could I remain indifferent to such
powerful performances and such strong commentaries on today's music and pop
culture?
I should definitely spank myself for being such a bad fan. Bad fan Bad fan.
What stood out from the rest though, was this line from 97 Bonnie and Clyde:
"There's a place called heaven and a place called hell, there's a place
called prison and a place called jail. And Dadda is probably on his way to
all of them except one, cause Mamma's got a new husband and a stepson."
Maybe it's kind of obvious, but I loved the idea of her turning around the
whole idea of that sentence, from Eminem meaning she was cheatin on him to
Tori suggesting that now, dead, she was married to God and, consequently
Jesus? Dunno, I just feel it's intended that way.
anyway. everybody shout at me. I deserve it.
I love the album now.

it.. it's so good!

the tip of the iceberg... We have approximately 80 ethnical cultures still
living it up thoughout the country. Poverty and margination have led all
these people to become very picky about people intruding their societies,
so they are rapidly becoming more and more excluded from the country's slow
development... As for people like me, ... it is very worrying that soon, we
won't have the liberty to practice any other religion ( or lack of it ) or
have a state which is
openly catholic and thus, biased in its decision-making."
that just pisses me off. grrrr.. e, your president is an idiot.. at

I've had mine taken out.. before that, my jaw pains (which are caused
by bruxism as I later found out) would cause actual MIGRAINES. but since
then, they only cause me to ache and gripe a little. before, I took
aspirins daily and almost hourly. after, if anything, I take sinus pills
because allergies and sinus trouble trigger jaw pain now, I've discovered..

yes :) Looks like a movie I need to see. We were talking about how
sometimes the critics will try so hard to find things in a movie to analyze
that they miss the point of the film. Actually it reminds me of the
overanalysis one might do on a reading assignment for a class, just in case
their teacher thinks they haven't read the assignment ;)

Attention seeking does have a negative connotation, but I don't think it's
wrong when you get good feedback on positive things you've done, or actively
seek out people with similar interests to share ideas with. The negative
side of it comes into play when someone is aggressively hostile to anyone or
anything that gets in the way of *everything* going their way.
>even people who say they don't like attention..

I've always enjoyed a good balance of making time for myself and spending
time with people, but I actually get uncomfortable with one-on-one attention
or help. I can have a great time with a group of people, being part of
what's going on, but I've always been uncomfortable when whatever is going
on starts to focus on me. I admit though, sometimes I talk too much but
that's me sometimes letting let my enthusiasm get the best of me, not me
showing up thinking "hey I'll try to take over this group!" ;)

of these days I want to have a site showcasing some of the stuff I've made.
What sort of videos have you made?
> so uh.. how well COULD you see Saturn? did it look colored like the
> pro pics made it look?
Not quite as colorfull when seen through a small telescope but the rings are
visible and the planet's natural butterscotch color is apparent. Up close
it's not as colorful as Jupiter, which even in a small telescope shows the
larger cloud belts and the four largest moons.
btw- it's Callisto ;)

It's really strange because it seems like "official" disability support is
where the internal hostility and cliques occur, while people with some sort
of disability just meeting and talking shop ends up being a really positive
experience.
Similar experience with non-disabled persons: the people in official
support roles I've met seem less friendly and accomodating than people who
have no connection to disability issues- in fact I've met people who have no
clue how to accomodate or assist someone in a wheelchair until they've met
me and really did what they could to help and make sure I could be part of
whatever was going on, without making too big of an issue about it.
> you know that's one thing I notice--the DISABILITY varies, but the

> we're all very accepting of each other.. (as well as by an unafraid and
> openminded not-disabled group of people. :))
See above :) It seems like as long as it's just people interacting
informally things go great, whereas the people I've met who are in some kind
of support capacity or otherwise have some official stake in the disabled
community have unfortunately been very hostile to anything that doesn't fit
their "official" concept of what disability is supposed to be like. To be
blunt, I've met counselors and rehab people who seem rather pissed when the
people in wheelchairs they have to work with *aren't* all supermacho men or
pretty girls wheeling about acting all "stoic in the face of adversity".
Not saying everyone is like that, but the fact that the problem exists was a
shock when I started trying to access help several years ago.
Overall, when it's just people meeting casually- whether it's with other
disabled persons or non-disabled persons, I feel a lot more at ease because
no one feels pressured to "act" a certain way or to say/not say certain
things, if that makes sense. I've never felt all that compromised or
affected and there's never been a concerted effort on my part to "overcome"
anything. I just sort of reached a point where most of it has become second
nature- not being cavalier or flippant, but waking up in the morning and
sliding over into my chair is to me no different than the thought I put into
putting on my glasses or putting my contacts in.
anyway-

I think someone else here might have said it, but I was chatting on IM with
Cyndi last night and she and I both agree that the guy that wrote it sounded
like a teenage boy declaring "these suck because my ex-girlfriend likes
them".

I loved the idea of the film, and both Posey and Bujold are fabulous, but
the whole thing still seems like a play rather than a movie, and the actors
aren't as strong as the actresses.
Plus, Tori Spelling's character isn't believable. Nobody who'd worked in a
donut shop on 14th street for even one day could be as gullible as she is.
:-)
But I grew up with the myth of "Camelot" and the assassination and all, and
it's a treat to see it used like that.

Subject: A sorta fairytale feeling
My apologies to all, but I didn't even turn on my computer for over a week.
Between math class and the heat wave disabling the phone lines(I was getting
a whopping 4600 bps), I decided to just avoid the distraction and
frustration. But now...I'm Ba-ack.... Well, at least until the next heat
wave.
SO...
After the past 5 weeks, I'm convinced that Dante' must have been doing a
summer session college math course when he wrote about the 7 levels of hell
(which would, of course, be Negative 7). I understood finite math, and
loved logic, but set theory left me cold and algebra...
Let me just say that I told the class and teacher that I refused to do
Algebra on Patriotic principles. Algebra is a Hindu-Arabic term
("Al-Jabr"), which means "the resolution". I said the term is too Taliban
for me and I couldn't support terrorism through support of their math
system. The teacher said that I was pushing it. Oh well. I never did
understand stupid linear equations.
Despite that, and my apprehensions (not to mention the utter lack of basic
math skills), I actually scored an 84% before my last assignment, so I'll
definitely get a "B" for the course. Before it started, I was hoping to
fight my way through to a "C", so having done better than I ever expected is
a nice bonus. And it's also nice not to have my GPA go down. :)
I've been reading lyrics to the 6 sampler tracks, and I have to apologize
for my first reaction to "A Sorta Fairytale". It is not fluff. None of the
six are fluff (regardless of the music). I can't wait for this; so much can
be found in the lyrics, and the album put together is going to blow my mind,
I'm sure of it. It'll be like Choirgirl played in lyric order mixed with
Pink and Pele, but on a global level, not personal. The feeling of 9-11 was
"a sorta fairytale" feeling that started with the breaking of a silver
lining. And reading "Pancake" makes me think of the attack even more. I
won't say more until I've actually heard the album, but I foresee a whole
lot of fodder for discussion in this "Walk". :)
Off to enjoy 2 weeks of vacation before fall semester starts.
Fairy Blessings,
Bethey

Same Time, Next Year
Gone with the Wind
To Dance with the White Dog (my favorite cry-me-a-river movie)
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Mildred Pierce
I can't even attempt my top five albums. Impossible, and truly all over the
map. It depends on my mood what I like and when I like it. And as you all
know, my "moods" are infinite, as is my music collection. A little bit of
everything.
American Idol:
I've seen the last two Tuesday episodes only because Justin is a local boy
and the newspaper has really been raving about him. But as soon as Justin
is done singing, I change the channel. Most of the contestants sound like
the kids who sing at the local karaoke bar (not bad, but not *superstar*).
And the judges are either fawning or insulting, unable to determine how to
give constructive criticism.
My summer guilty pleasure has been Big Brother 3, only because I get to
watch it with my best "girlfriend", Jeremy (who is a confessed "pearl
clutcher" and loves *drramma*). We watch the whole week in one night on
tape and are quite spoiled by skipping commercials. I find all the
contestants this year to be as low and shallow as can be found in the USA
and the only person who should have won was kicked out first.
Brian mentioned other people with his name. Hon, type Beth Coulter into any
search engine and you'll hit paydirt. Pages of people with my name all over
the world.
Only two more digests to go. I've spent an entire Friday on RDT and
answering emails that are weeks old. It's a hell of a lot better than
working on math.

the web, I assume that people will download it and read it and maybe
print it out and lend to a friend. If I don't want that to occur, I do
not put my work out there."
That actually was me, Bethey. See, there are (at least) three Beths here.
Beth W. from San Fran (where I was born), Bethany R. from Philadelphia
(where I moved to when I left California about 20 years ago), and me (in
bucolic Bucks County, PA). Now it's really confusing, all three of us are
quite talented and creative, but we do make an effort to differentiate
between each other to limit the confusion. But when Bethany asked that the
difference between her and Beth be made, she forgot all about me. Probably
because I was drowning in my math class and was very quiet (out of sight,
out of mind).
It's nice to meet you Victoria. Good post. And thanks for the nice things
