[ =======================> In RDT History <======================= ]
On August 11th in 1992, members were posting about accessing
ftp sites.
In 1994, an article is posted (subject line: axcess magazine
article):
"Healing for me is being able to sit next to the butcher and
say, 'Yes, I'm sitting next to the butcher now,' instead of
saying'There is no butcher.'Well, there definitely is one!"
asserts Amos. "On this record, I try to hold hands with
violence. I'm holding hands with him and it's like 'Let's
go get some dresses and hang out together."'
In 1998, more sticking up for 15-year-old fans, a post about
stereotyping fans, a Matt Chamberlain/Smashing Pumpkins
confusion (which you might recall happening recently in one of
the SW articles), and a couple of variations on the Vanilla Ice
--> Tori 6 degrees connection.
In 1999, more on the current flame war.

And I'm not launching into a religion rant here (honest!), but I think the
things about religion that have upset me aren't religion as a whole, but
what some people tend to do- focusing on either the hellfire and damnation
angle or presenting a very defeatist and fatalistic view, instead of trying
to share their beliefs in a positive way. Especially when religion comes up
in a disability discussion- it always seems like the fatalistic view is
presented rather than showing how belief in a "higher power" of some sort
might be helpful from a psychological standpoint in dealing with the
challenges and difficulties one encounters. I mean, I'm going to be more
receptive to someone sharing their experiences of how their faith (whatever
it is they might believe in) helped them through a difficult period than
someone saying "things are bad but it's god's will so who are we to
question?"
I think *that's* what I've been trying to articulate for a long time, and I
think I finally got it out in a way that makes sense ;) Why can't one
believe in some kind of higher power in the universe without all the
negativity some people try to bring into it?
Or as Commander Sinclair (first commander of Babylon 5) put it: "Mabye God
doesn't care how we say our prayers, just as long as we say them". ;)

That would be interesting to see- perhaps the extra material better explains
things, like the world situation and more of the technical details that did
fit the story but seemed a little confusing in places.
The movie is one of the rare instances where I've felt emotionally drained
by a movie- not depressed, but really drawn into the story and what was
happening to the characters- really intense and sad in places but so
relieved to see how things ultimately worked out.

I hate it when that happens to me, though I don't mind it so much when
they're in the same digest but there's a lot of other posts in between. I
try not to have two right next to each other, though. If I have two posts
ready at once, I'll hold one back for a day, to spread them out.
Cyndi asked:

Yup. Started as a visual artist, moved into poetry, started adding music
to the poetry, ended up a rock star, quit that to be a wife and mom (and
poet), then started performing regularly again when her husband died.
Oh, and I left out "rock critic," which she also did before she became a
musician, as did her guitarist Lenny Kaye.

I've never written as a job, but I found that the more pressure I put on

A pretty good description of some of the reviews Patti Smith used to write
when she was a rock critic. :-)
> I have turned to other media for my personal expression:
I'm currently doing stick figure comics.
It has certain advantages over prose fiction, though it's also somewhat
more expensive. I don't own a scanner, so I have to go to the local
Kinko's from time to time to scan things. But it is a cheaper medium than
many (like motion pictures or sculpting in margerine) and sometimes it
makes people laugh.
Maybe I'll do a stick figure comic about Tori someday.

Just got back from a wedding. I think I could eat different flavors of

Unfortunately, that is not something I care to do every day for the rest of

On to some replies before I disappear for the rest of the weekend:

I'd say that's good advice. My head is just too much of a loudmouth I
guess.

You know, I'm finding that out too as I try to get accustomed to rush hour
traffic in St. Louis. But I haven't had the opportunity to pick up Gold
yet.
> Yay for Rebecca's Playing By Heart reference. I love that movie!
Yay for Victoria for catching my reference! I thought it went well with the
art standing alone vs. talking about art thread. For those who haven't seen
the movie, the entirety of the quote is: "Talking about love is like
dancing about architecture."
>From Cyndi again:

> rofl.. SWEET! :)
Heehee. You'd be laughing even harder if you knew how much I *don't* look
like her. Maybe in the cheekbones and tiny stature, but from there all
similarity ends. It still made my day though.
I get wierd comparisons like that all the time. One year, half the people I
met claimed I resembled Molly Ringwald (although that could be explained
away by the red hair and tacky red lipstick I always wore). And then there
was the bizarre incident at a party where a couple of foreign exchange
students insisted I looked like Lucille Ball. I had to walk away from that
one wondering if I was the butt of some joke I didn't understand.
Take care,
Rebecca

Well, separating twins that are conjoined at the frontal
lobe (if these are the same ones I'm thinking of)
is not the easiest surgery in the world. Quite experimental in fact. I'm
sure the United States wanted to garner some international attention
on the ability of its doctors to do this kind of work, as it
does bring money into the country.
The feelings of relaxation resulting from my vacation vanished earlier
this week with the amount of work I had to do and the amount of bullshit I
had to take in order to get it done. I ended the week thinking I was going
to get sick. But I slept about 10 hours last night and feel a little bit
better, and am cooking dinner for some friends tonight (although in this
heat, that might be an insane proposition). Tomorrow, Devin and I are
seeing King's X, Dream Theater and Joe Satriani -- of those, and I'm fans
of all of them -- I have only seen Joe (a handful of times). I'm looking
forward to it.
Right now I am bracing for the onslaught of information regarding Tori
Amos _and_ Fields of the Nephilim, since I run a Fields fan site as an
adjust to a mailing list about them (as well as assisting on the Tori Tour
list). I find it ironic that FOTN, which is notoriously slow about putting
out albums, will announce one is forthcoming and then not release it for
three years, has just released a track list for its new album which is
supposed to be out Oct. 9. Meanwhile, we still don't know the
complete track list for Scarlet's Walk and we don't know when the tour
starts. All this from a record company which is supposed to be
professional and on top of things. :) I'm a bit baffled but
whatever - we'll get the info when we get it. I do know there are
people who are eager to plan vacation time around Tori's shows, though.
I haven't done much this week with all the work I did, but I did start
reading "Fellowship of the Ring," to discover that the bit I
couldn't get through last time wasn't even part of the book,
it was the extended history of the hobbits in the prologue. Hmmm.

Well, logically what makes a real man is a male between the ages of 18 and
beyond with a penis. But being a GOOD MAN is different. They have to have
so much more. Everyone's opinion of a GOOD MAN is different so I can really
sound like I know everything in this. But for me a good man is kind,
caring, understanding, self-confident, open minded, etc.

It is I, hailing from the land of lurkers. I've been here for a lil while,
just reading in the background, enjoying all of the lovely conversation.
So, I'm an introvert... sue me. Guess I have some things to say this time,
so here goes my wonderful ability to start a huge flame war...
"In 2001, House Of Leaves."
Is this in reference to Poe at all? Her brother, Mark Z. Danielewski wrote
a book (Brook, too... please love my typos) entitled "The House Of Leaves".
Coincidently I have not read it yet, I'm still trying to finish up a few
Anne Rice books as is. Also, the year Poe's album "Haunted" was released
(and presumably the book too?) was 2001.
"Lavenda" said: "And just to cover all the bases, there's a link to the

Good to know for those times when you really want to just kill some time :).
Cyndi said: "and okay.. as long as I can do a top five of non-Tori and
then a top five of Tori.. I'll do my list too!"
This is actually based off of what I'm listening to the most right now, so
here goes the top five (or more...)
1. Tori Amos "Little Earthquakes"
2. Nightwish "Century Child" *glances at subject*
3. Sarah Fimm "Cocooned" If you haven't heard her yet, run, don't walk to
www.cdbaby.com and pick it up ;D
4. Cathy Verric "Shallows & Depths"
5. Vanessa Carlton "Be Not Nobody" Please, don't hurt me for this one.
6. Frou Frou "Details" my finishing touch, unless I think of something else
worthy of making it.
Victoria said: "Because, with the exception of that Swedish bitch from
Metallica, it's not the artists that are saying no and going to court over

I think "that Swedish bitch" is from Denmark, actually. Which to the best
of my Geographical knowledge (which isn't much, mind you) is Southwestish of
Sweden. At one time I think he might have had some form of a point, but
whatever it may have been has been long lost now somewhere between the x
million rants shamelessly publicized (constantly) by the media. Seeing what
I've seen, most people that I know download MP3's and end up buying the
CD's. Example of this is why I'm even here, a long lost, but good friend of
mine sent me "Cornflake Girl" many years ago. *glances at Tori CD's now* :)
"Emmanuel" said: "As much a loser as he was, at least Clinton wasn't a
vengeful Texan on a murderous spree. God save the world, cause Bush
obviously won't"
I never did like the idea of Bush leading us into war. Most of the time he
doesn't even know what he's saying, or he's unable to speak. Probably a
little of both. So, how, tell me please, is he going to organize and
execute a legitament and moral war? If there is such a thing, as they'd
like to think they can convince us that there is. I think either he a.
wants to win over fans (which he's on the losing end of) or b. wants to blow
money. Either way, I voted for the lesser idiot (but, still the "I invented
the internet." idiot that we all love and adore) that is Gore. I say put a
black woman in office.
Cyndi said: "you need to come to GA then! :)"
I shall be moving to Marietta first chance I get! :)
She also delightfully added: "I wonder..... if she'll be born on Tori's
birthday (the 22nd, obviously..)"
My uncle was born August, 21st (I'm pondering getting a birthday cake that
says "Happy birthday Dave and Tori!" and start eating it just before
midnight :)). Ironically, Sarah McLachlan (Tori/Sarah are my two favs, sort
of) was born January 28th. My birthday is February 1st. Astrologically,
Aquarians are the direct opposites of Leo's and vice versa. Leo's being the
more dedicated, Aquarians the more creative. We go hand in hand! :)
Cyndi also apparently wrote: "even people who say they don't like
attention.. somewhere, want attention of SOME kind--like maybe they just
hate crowds, but love one-on-one attention, for example.. something to
ponder and chew on.. :)"
I tend to like to hang around a small group of two, maybe three friends.
Being involved, but in the background as well. I like attention, but in
moderation :)

math system. The teacher said that I was pushing it. Oh well. I never did
understand stupid linear equations."
Brilliant, yes, indeed... brilliant :)
Beth's signature said: "I'm OK when Everything's not OK cause it's the
Fairies Revenge they say And I have always been a Fairy."
Remind me when you change your signature to steal that one from you :)
Beth had a bit about movies...
Let's see here, I like a lot of movies but I'll just name some of my favs.
Girl Interrupted, The Shawshank Redemption, Fight Club, Interview With A
Vampire, The Crow, and probably more... :)
Beth also said...: "I can't even attempt my top five albums.
Impossible, and truly all over the map. It depends on my mood what I like

*pulls out of my super-duper-one-liner-machine, aka my sleeve, the
phrase...* "Ditto" :). One word, wow I'm good. No, actually I suck. More
on that later.
Beth ALSO said (she seems to be typing up a storm catching up): "See,
there are (at least) three Beths here."
Frightening, truly... very, frightening. How am I to keep up?
Okay that's all for this horribly long and drawn out post but I couldn't

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
My name is Stephanie Showers and I am Executive Director for an online
Tori Amos fan community with over 100 members called Chicagoland Toriphiles.
I am very excited to announce the 2nd Annual Midwest Torifest, part of a
nationwide bash to benefit RAINN (the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National
Network, http://www.rainn.org). Midwest Torifest will take place on Saturday,
August 24th, 2001 from 2pm until dusk at Oakton Park in Skokie, IL (on the
corner of Oakton Street and Skokie Boulevard). Admission is FREE to the
public, although no food will be provided (please bring your own sack
lunches). No alcoholic beverages are allowed. We will offer contests with
prizes, a raffle, and an online auction with all proceeds to benefit RAINN!
Bring your swimsuit, Oakton Park has a community pool with a water slide
(admission $6 for residents, $12 for non-residents). Please RSVP at the
official RAINN Bash website: http://birthday.rainn.org/ Click on '"I would
like to ATTEND a party." and choose "IL, Chicago - Midwest Torifest - August
24th (FREE)" from the drop-down menu.
Thank you for your time and assistance.
