Hey Louisham, my name is Julie, I'm a 15-year-old female from Wisconsin,
USA.

It must be hard to live in Singapore...I've heard that that country isn't
very accepting of other music besides rated G music or not huge issues in
music.

Anytime you want an update on Tori news, want to hear a song, whatever...you
just ask and I'll do what I can to help you. You CAN be a Tori fan from
Singapore...that's a fact.

Good luck sweetie.

An American odyssey

Tori Amos tells a story-in-songs culled from
the people she met on the road after 9/11

By ISAAC GUZMAN

Tori Amos would prefer that her latest release, "Scarlet's Walk," not be
referred to as a "concept" album. But it's hard to get around such labels
when a record comes with its own color-coded map and offers links to a Web
site filled with American history and explanations of the album's fictional
characters.

Amos has crafted "Scarlet's Walk" around a meandering journey through
America, although the casual listener would be unlikely to glean the plot
from a single spin of the album. Her title character travels from Anchorage
to Sioux Falls, S.D., Chattanooga, Tenn., and New York City. Along the way,
she runs into spiritual charlatans, wanna-be revolutionaries and, most
significantly, an adult-film star named Amber Waves, who is a few years
past her prime.

Amos, 39, nicked the name from Julianne Moore's character in "Boogie
Nights." But where Paul Thomas Anderson's film has Amber embodying the
spirit of the '70s, Amos thinks she's emblematic of America in an age of
disarray.

"She's getting pimped out," Amos says. "Also, the word 'fading' porn star ó
in this song, it's not as if she's exactly fresh meat. She's made certain
choices that she has to come to terms with. They're haunting her now, so it
seemed to me that that's very much where America is at today."

Amos conceived the record's theme as she trekked across the U.S. during a
concert tour last fall. The nation was still in the throes of post-9/11
anxiety, and Amos says she got a chance to talk to people on an unusually
intimate level.

"Conversations I normally wouldn't have had were going to all these deep
places," she says. "Relationships were formed at a much quicker pace.
Things were amped, so feelings weren't tucked in like shirts."

In covering everything from shattered romances to atrocities against Native
Americans, "Scarlet" has Amos is in a typically ambitious mode. Her last
album, "Strange Little Girls," was also built around an idea, as Amos
sought to put a feminist twist on songs written by men. While much of the
record seemed muddled, her breathy take on Eminem's " '97 Bonnie and Clyde"
was a psychologically wrenching depiction of violence against women.

It recalled the song with which Amos broke into the pop world. In 1991, she
released "Me and a Gun," an autobiographical, a cappella track in which she
described being raped. That challenging stance instantly made her a
polarizing figure, leading some critics to deride her as shrill even as she
inspired rabid devotion in her fans.

"A lot of fans are drawn to her music because she dares to go into these
taboo subjects in a real in-your-face style," says Dianne Spoto Shattuck,
an associate editor at Women Who Rock magazine. "Her subject matter deals
so much with conflicts that have to do with sexuality and religion,
feminist issues and her own experience with rape. There aren't too many
artists who delve into those areas."

While Amos modeled much of her sound and sensibility on '80s art-rocker
Kate Bush, she herself became a major influence on a generation of women
singer-songwriters.

Piano-based anthems such as "God" and "Cornflake Girl" clearly resonated
with artists such as Paula Cole, Fiona Apple and, most recently, Vanessa
Carlton.

"She's like the godmother of the entire '90s singer-songwriter movement,"
says Jim Kaminski, rock buyer for Tower Records in Greenwich Village. "Her
records selling was what made labels go out and sign other female
singer-songwriters."

For years, Amos was rankled by being compared with other female artists,
especially those on the Lilith Tour. But she says that when she became a
mother two years ago ó she and husband Mark Hawley, a studio engineer, are
the parents of Natashya ó she began to feel more comfortable with her role
as an icon for women rockers.

"It's about becoming more of a nurturing force," she says. "Now I have a
lot of time for the young ones coming up, and I can be thrilled for other
people. The only thing that was hard about it was being pitted against each
other in the media."

Members of the press again annoyed Amos last summer when ó despite
distribution to only a handful of journalists ó advance tracks for
"Scarlet" wound up on the Internet. So, like many artists, Amos took
extreme measures in trying to foil pirates before the official release date.

"Those were my babies ó those weren't even finished mixes," she says. "So I
went to my guys and said, 'Do what you have to, because trust has been
broken.' "

SEALING THE DEAL

The solution of Amos' label, Epic, was to loan copies of the record to
music journalists in a portable CD player with the lid sealed shut and a
pair of jumbo headphones glued into the only output jack. The whole affair
made Amos even more adamant about protecting her work from bootlegging ó
one of the music business' most pressing issues.

"I believe in wine-tasting, but if you put a bottle of it in your bag, what
you're saying is that you don't respect the people who made it," she says.
"If you need to take the music, take the music. But at some point you just
become a taker. You're a parasite."

Even if some fans download her songs, Epic and retailers expect "Scarlet"
to be her best-selling album since 1998's platinum "From the Choirgirl
Hotel." For Amos, however, the greatest success is weaving a tale with a
unified theme, something she's wanted to do for years.

"To have a story work from top to tail with one character moving through is
a challenge," she says. "But I didn't set out to write a road-trip sonic
novel. The songs just started coming quickly because I was out in the land
at a time when the masks were down, when people were talking about things
they might not talk about today. Like, 'If tomorrow doesn't come, what
would I change today?' "

Am I the only one that thinks that there is a competition between Aguilera and
Brittney Spears on who can be the sluttiest? Her video for "Dirty" is the
most vile thing I've ever seen. The only thing those two girls have
accomplished so far I can sum up in two words: "SEX OBJECT". Disgusting.

I received my "A Sorta Fairytale" Single yesterday. What beautiful songs. "
'Fairytale" is gripping. It's new yet warm and fuzzy like an old sweater. It
resembles a piece of classic Americana. "Operation Peter Pan" is completely
haunting and heartbreaking.

hi everyone

world series week is great isn't it? because of the time difference between
the uk and the us, the games take place overnight which means i don't get to
see them until i get home from work and watch them on video tape - but it's
great to come home, cook some food, crack open a beer and watch the games at
my leisure! and it's been a darn good series so far. i understand the tv
ratings have been pretty low because it's a west coast series and there
aren't any supposed "big teams" involved (let's all laugh at the
yankees...!). it's a shame if people aren't tuning in, because they're
missing some great ball.

well i didn't manage to see the mets while i was in new york because i had
to delay my trip until after the regular season was over, but i had a cool
time nonetheless. i stayed in greenpoint (north brooklyn) rather than
manhattan and it put a whole different complexion on my trip compared to my
previous visit - it was great to see some more of the "real" city as well as
the madness of manhattan. i was very surprised on wandering around battery
park to come across "the sphere" - the sculpture which used to stand in the
wtc plaza and is now erected in battery park as a memorial to 9/11. i
thought that was a very fitting tribute, and in many ways much more moving
than seeing the trade center site itself. i was interested to see that
although the city as a whole seems to be very much back to business as
usual, a great many individuals are of course still having a great deal of
trouble dealing with everything - the impresison i had was one of collective
recovery against a backdrop of continued individual suffering. i found the
"empty skies" over downtown very emotional to look at though - and this from
a foreigner who really had no personal involvement in the tragedy.

on a lighter note, i also happened to stumble across a free concert by
counting crows - one of my all-time favourites. it was great to hear some
of the newer tracks (i hadn't yet bought "hard candy" at the time) and also
some old chestnuts like "mr. jones" and "anna begins".

i wonder if anyone here has read "and the ass saw the angel" by nick cave?
i don't normally give up on books without finishing them, but for some
reason i just feel no compulsion whatsoever to keep on reading. i guess
what i want to ask is - should i persevere? am i missing anything special?

so what else - i now have a new flat and great new job and am getting used
to my new surroundings and meeting a whole bunch of new colleagues.
studying was fun and useful but it's good to be making an honest living
again...! unfortunately the person in the flat below me seems to have
suddenly discovered the volume control on his hifi and has it cranked up
extremely and very annoyingly loud. however i don't really like the idea of
knocking on his door and saying "hi, you don't know me, i just moved in
above you, but can you please shut the hell up as you're really pissing me
off". ho hum, maybe it's just a passing phase. i'll have my revenge when i
get my hands on SW, and treat my loud but taste-deficient neighbour to some
*real* music!

anyhow that's all i have to say today

until next time

matt

Greetings on Fellatio Friday. Well I'm calling it that if we can have
Testicular Tuesday and Clitoris Sunday. (I know it's an action and not a
body part, but does any of this really matter, like election results in
Florida?)

There's somebody on this list with a Verizon account who keeps
inadvertently sending me two or three copies of the Klez.H virus a day. I'm
begging everyone here on Verizon to check their antivirus software
definitions are up to date, or go to:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.h@mm.html
and download the utility to remove it. This virus has been out since April
so there's no excuse for still spreading it.

Have any of the Aussies around here been watching CNNNN on Thursday nights?
I've been pissing myself laughing at it each week. For those that don't get
it, it's a parody of CNN and it's so amazingly accurate. I particularly
like the slogan, "We report, you believe".

Last week's show nearly killed me, when the did the ads for Fungry's Family
Restaurants for the pickle tower burger combo. It was 5 pickles on a pickle
bun with pickle sauce with pickle fries and a pickle shake with extra
pickles. Pickles are one of my pet hates when travelling in North America.
It seems wherever you eat there is a monster pickle on the plate. I can't
stand the freaking things and even a couple of slices of pickle is more
than enough, but a whole one? Is there something in the constitution about
"thou shalt eat five pickles a day". Pickle my gizzards and bugger me with
a fish fork.

So why is it so quiet around here? Is there something fantastic on US
television that won't come out here until next February? I'd like to fill
in my calendar now if that's the case.

Way back in #1726, which was like a year ago, Woj sent us info on the bonus
DVD that comes with Tori's new CD in Australia. That makes me think more
than ever she's not going to tour here, plus for once we'll have something
that the rest of the world can't play unless they've got a multi-zone DVD
player. Ha! I'd rather trade for a tour. Think you can buy me out with
bonus extras?

Amos Offers Fans Extras Via The Web

Details of the "bonus world" Tori Amos fans will have access to following
the purchase of her forthcoming Epic album, "Scarlet's Walk," have begun to
emerge. Utilizing Epic parent Sony's proprietary ConnecteD technology as a
key, the disc -- due Tuesday (Oct. 29) -- will unlock an area on Amos'
official Web site that will host everything from music to photos, contests,
and commentary by the artist.

Once linked to "Scarlet's Web" by using the disc in a computer's DVD-ROM
drive, users will encounter a trio of maps to aid in navigation through a
wide array of bonus features. Epic promises fans will find several songs
that are not included on "Scarlet's Walk," lyrics, and a track-by-track
commentary by Amos. Behind-the-scenes video and photos from the album's
recording sessions, mini-movies, and stories will also reside on the site.

Also planned are contests for premium tickets to Amos' upcoming North
American tour, which will kick off Nov. 7 in Tampa, Fla. Those who can't
wait for the trek to reach their market will have access to live recordings
that will be made available exclusively through the site.

"I wanted people to be able to discover for themselves the journey that
Scarlet and I are taking," Amos said in a statement. "In 'Scarlet's Web'
you will be able to unlock the inner most details of this fantastic voyage,
as well as a few special surprises along the way."

In addition to the online extras, a limited edition package of "Scarlet's
Walk" will be released the same day as the regular disc (each will offer
access to the "Scarlet's Web" site.) The special version of the album will
include "an exclusive DVD, Polaroid's, stickers, [and] a charm," according
to the label.

On Friday, selections from the album will be streamed via a special page on
Amos' Web site (www.toriamos.com/virtualinstore) for 24 hours beginning at
1 p.m. ET. At 7 p.m. ET that day, Amos will take part in a live online chat
with fans about the album and tour. The site will also offer the
opportunity to pre-order the album via online retailers worldwide.

Tori Amos: Scarlet's Walk

2 of 5 stars (Epic)

Adam Sweeting
Friday October 25, 2002
The Guardian

Her record company refers to her as "superstar Tori Amos", but I think most
of us would settle on "singer-songwriter who could use another hit".
Corporate jobsworths are so terrified that Tori's new record won't be able
to stand up for itself that reviewers are only permitted to listen to it on
sealed, individually numbered Walkmen for fear that it might be pirated
over the internet. Even the headphones have been superglued into their socket.

If only Scarlet's Walk were that desirable. In fact, it is merely
tastefully crafted, with lots of moping piano, chin-stroking lyrics and the
occasional interlude of emotionally bereft cello. Amos has wheeled in a
discreet assortment of floaty, funky beats to demonstrate that she isn't
entirely in thrall to Joni Mitchell's Hejira. But even the best song here,
A Sorta Fairytale, isn't going to save the music industry.

Scarlet's Walk

10/24/2002

By Mike Lipton

If the thought of another batch of songs inspired by Sept. 11--especially
by angst queen Tori Amos--is enough to ruin your day, you'd think the good
news would be that, at least she's focused on a national (as opposed to
personal) tragedy, right? Well, not exactly. Amos has used the events of
Sept. 11 as a jumping-off point to muse about our country's history, past
and present ("chronicle of her love affair with America"). But in her
hands, "history" has a loose and varied interpretation.

"Amber Waves," a tune that, save for the title (also the name of a porn
star in the film Boogie Nights), has more to do with an unscrupulous
promoter who exploits a woman than the U.S. of A. The first single, "A
Sorta Fairytale" is a return to form of sorts. In this relationship tale,
she says the word "I" no less than 32 times (what was the concept of the
record, again?). Throughout, the recipe stays pretty much the same with
Amos inserting obtuse references to the country, flag, ideals, etc. Of
course, there's always the distinct possibility I'm too shallow to decipher
the true meaning of lines like: "Messiahs need people dying in their
name/you say, 'I ordered you a pancake?'" (from "Pancake").

Musically, the tunes are more cohesive this time around, with more of a
"band" feel then simply people accompanying Amos and her Bosendorfer.
"Crazy," one of the catchier tracks seems to be about sex while the
Sinfonia of London adds a Moody Blues luster to "Gold Dust." If there was a
silver lining to last year's terrorist attacks, they at least tempered
Amos's self-centered ramblings and encouraged her to think about someone
besides herself. Now, let's all join hands and pray she doesn't co-write
with Ani DiFranco.

[Note from Violet: Spoiler ... this message has comments on the
new album. If you haven't heard it yet and you don't want to
know any details, you may want to skip to the next post. :) ]

i was able to snag my copy of Scarlet's Walk a couple days early. I listened
to it for the first time tonight, and I have to say: i haven't been this
blown away at first listen since Boys for Pele.

I got the limited edition, which comes in this nifty little box that you
actually have to open up (not just a slide case or anything like that).
Inside are two cardboard sleeves, one with the cd, one with the dvd, the
map, polariods (which are so beautiful), stickers (which are so cute) and
this tiny little pewter charm (mine was a book). It's almost like a little
care package that you'd get in the mail. I have to say I love the design of
everything in the package. whoever did it is a genius, it fits in perfectly
with the album's concept and music.

haven't touched the dvd yet, i'm still concentrating on the music. this
little package contains so much stuff to look at and do, it's overwhelming.

I'd recommend listening to this album while driving, preferably very fast
and while it's dark. that's what i did, tooling around the suburbs of
Philadelphia, watching the gas needle dip perilously low.

I can't even separate all the songs out yet, they kind of are all jelling
together right now. Layers will continue to reveal themselves the more I
listen, so right now I feel like I can only give little anecdotes.

Those who downloaded the six song sampler - never fear, the songs are
actually properly mixed and they sound MUCH better than they did on there.
one that stands out, though, was I can't see New York. that one i remember,
because it's so chilling and exhilarating at the same time. it starts out
with something reminescent of Horses, so light and airy, and just fucking
explodes. God.

your cloud actually sounds like it could be a companion to cloud on my
tongue. and i kept listening to the album and picking out various tracks and
thinking, "this one's from Pink, this one's from Choirgirl, this one's from
Y Kant Tori Read", but actually I think this album is its own thing. It's
the opinion of many people (me included) that she kind of stagnanted on the
last two albums, treading water. I think it's pretty clear that she wasn't
happy at Atlantic, and that shows up musically. But this, this is a leap, a
leap she finally needed and I was afraid she wasn't going to make. But she
did! and it's fabulous! so let's talk about this fabulous album and bring
this damn list back to life.

I hate sinus pills.. but they're the only thing that keeps my
jaws from aching these days (I guess it's sinus-related).. I hate them
because even if they say in big fat bold letters, "NON DROWSY".. I still
get sleepy. fun. I can't think right.. I'm nodding off.. and here I am
doing an RDTRN... :D this should be interesting.. ON WITH THE REPLIES! :P

Julie said of celebrity stalkers: "I hope Tori will always be safe from
that, along with other celebrities."
as do I, and so far so good (correct me if I'm wrong..).. being
in Cornwall (instead of a huge city) helps.. and uh I dunno if I'd count
her rape as being stalked.. cuz the guy didn't follow her around all the
time, I don't think.. right?

Beth mentioned wanting to see that "Bowling for Columbine" movie.. it's a
documentary.. but it seems to be presented to me as a comedy, I dunno
why.. anybody else got an opinion about this?

Jessica said: "i still have space in my heart for those who are older
than the average 17 and still haven't gotten the naked nookie."
nekkid nookie.. ooooh.. well yay to that then! I'm 21 and I still
haven't gotten laid (but that's mostly a conscious choice of my own--I'd
rather wait for the wedding night.. partly cuz of how I've been raised
but mostly because of all the risks that I don't even want to even TRY
gambling with.) so.. :D

Louisham: are you delurking for good? if so, welcome to the un-lurked
world! :)

e: loved your "we would have done it" poem btw :) very nice. :D

and uh.. on that note.. *falls asleep and snores and drools on the
keyboard*

Subject: Unsettled confusion

10/27/02

Ok, I have been confused about God-faith-religion-etc. for a long time. My
father is a Protestan Christian and my mother is Jewish. For a while I
didn't really think about what I was doing when I was praying or
whatever...I just didn't understand and I did it anyways. As I've been
growing I'm realizing more things about it and not liking some of it. I
hate how in some Bibles it talks about "all gays going to Hell" or something
like that...I think that is one of the most awful things I've ever heard.
Also, I hate how I've heard of the sexism towards women. But the thing
is...I could be suited as a Jew...but I might not believe in some of those
things...see...I don't understand. I'm going to check out some books from
the library and learn more about those faiths so I can understand and maybe
choose a faith...if I don't find anything that suits me...then that doesn't
matter...I can just believe whatever I want to believe because of the
uncertainty of what's going on in God's place or back in the times when the
stories of God, etc. were first written.

Wish me luck and if you want, could you tell me about your beliefs and what
you practice and some of the things you read in whatever you read or don't
read...ya know what I mean.
